Reviews for Training

    Dear Artemick -

I must confess I've been lurking through your stories since mid-January. As of yesterday, I can officially say I've read all the Yu Yu Hakusho content you've posted on this account. I have been intending to leave you a review for quite some time, but only just today made an account to do so. I am not even sure where to begin, and I apologize in advance, because this is going to be a really weird 'general' review, but I'm leaving it attached to this fic because this is the fic I "discovered" you by. With many of your fics, but with this one especially, I've felt that up until the point where things get sexual, the characterization is incredibly spot-on, but then once sex starts happening, whoever is paired with Kurama at the time becomes either a little or a lot out-of-character, depending on how likely to dominate their character is in the first place. This seems an intentional choice on your part, in order to get Kurama to submit, which is a theme you play with quite a bit in your fics. In other words, it seems that you opt for that dominant-submissive theme at the cost of accurate characterization. In the stories where Kurama's partner is already quite dominant in temperament, this doesn't seem OOC at all, but in this fic, and in the fics featuring Koenma, it does strike me as OOC.

That said, your work is addictive. You have an incredible skill at weaving powerful dialogue with simple, expressive narrative, and the result is writing that says just what it needs to in a gut-wrenchingly moving way. Your characterization of Kurama is an exception to my comments in the previous paragraph, because while I do disagree with some aspects of your interpretation, that's entirely up to creative license, and yours is by far one of the most believable Kuramas I've read- he's witty, with great depth of feeling and a tendency to lapse into emotional and philosophical thought. The way you form him in words has in fact taken my breath away on numerous occasions. I could find examples of this in literally every piece you've posted. Your prose is utterly beautiful. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to stop reading a fic of yours because of the subject matter, but the prose won't let me leave. I think that is the mark of an outstanding writer.

In short, thank you for posting your work on this site. It has been a wild ride for me, reading your fics, because half of me is busy protesting content and the rest of me is awe-stricken at the way you form words on the page. You are by far one of my favorite fanfic authors, and I know reading your work has also pushed me to become a better writer.

(By the way, my favorite fic by yours, by leaps and bounds, is A Single Breath. Library of Alexandria is also excellent.)

    Best,
    Heidi

I was wondering if this would be the end... I really hope not, even if it would be ok to stop here, but it's just that it's so rare to read good stories like this, where the characters are both in character in a rather out of character situation, that it just calls for a continuation. I'd like to read more if you ever feel up to writing it. And I'd suggest you write more of Kuwabara because you grasped him beautifully... and if he's paired with Kurama more often that would be just the icing of the cake. ;D

*hums contentedly* And that, there, is exactly what I ask for in any fic.

Lovely work. Please do keep it up! Everything you write comes out gold.

You fiend! What a place to stop!!! I was really getting into this. You set up their relationship so nicely and even had Kuwabara take the lead on it, which I wasn't expecting. The fact that you have me aching for the continuation is serious because in no way am I a Kuwabara/Kurama fan. At all. But this is just too good! Please continue soon!

Right when I was despairing over the state of the YYH Just In page! Lovely work as always, Artemick, though I'm being honest when I say it was more of a psychological kind of pleasure for me than visceral. Hot dogs aren't sexy, is basically what it comes down to.

Kuwabara had that subtle shifting off canon characterization that you seem to work best with, and which I always enjoy. Old characters in new ways is always a lovely thing, especially when the resulting story is as nice as this. Here's to hoping you'll continue this!
