Chapter 8
Inuyasha knocks on the door to Sesshomaru's family chambers and the door almost instantly slides open. Shippo leaps onto Inuyasha, squealing, "I'm gonna be a brother!"
Inuyasha staggers back coughing. "Not for long with this treatment, kid," he jokes. Inuyasha disentangles himself from his enthusiastic kit. "Lets go in, shall we?"
Shippo grins, "Do, let's. The kits are off the wall about getting cousins to play with." Shippo leads them in and through an open shoji door out into the gardens. The gardens consist of a large, grassy yard surrounded by blossoming bushes and sakura trees. There is a playground like one would find in a park in a corner of the yard.
Hiei looks curiously at the playground, where the twins can be seen hanging upside down from the monkey bars giggling while their brother pushed them, so they swung back and forth. Inuyasha leans in, "I built that for Akinori when he was little. I remembered seeing playgrounds in Kagome's time and thought he might like it."
Hiei nods, "I thought it was a little out of place, but that makes sense."
Kurama smiles a little ruefully, "I suppose Hiei and I have some catching up to do when it comes to dealing with children."
Shippo leads them over to where Sesshomaru is lounging beneath a sakura tree. On a low table, tea and small snacks are set out near by. "Are you feeling well, Otouto?"
Inuyasha grins, "Weirdly enough, I think I'm taking it better than Kurama."
Shippo frowns, "Inuyasha, you fainted." He laughs, "That's not exactly taking it well."
Inuyasha growls, "It ain't as if I even knew I could get pregnant. I was kinda blindsided on two fronts." Inuyasha crosses his arms and looks away and up. "And when I woke up, I got past that pretty quickly. At least I'm used to weird shit happening with my biology." Inuyasha jumps up into the tree and lounges on one of the branches. Pointedly ignoring everyone on the ground. Kurama and Hiei situate themselves beneath the tree, getting comfortable. Kurama pours Hiei and himself some tea.
Sesshomaru sighs, "Inuyasha come down here and stop pouting. Your reaction was reasonable."
Inuyasha sniffs, "Damn straight it was. And I am not pouting."
Sesshomaru looks up raising an eyebrow, "Oh, really?" His face smoothes out and his voice takes a wry tone, "This Sesshomaru must rethink how he interprets his children when they act similarly, then. Please, do accept this Sesshomaru's most sincerest apologies for any misconceptions." Sesshomaru calmly sips his tea before turning his attention to Kurama and Hiei, "How are you taking your impending fatherhood?"
Inuyasha glares down at his brother. Kurama sips his tea to hide his smile. Hiei sets aside his tea, "The fox is having a difficult time adjusting to this news. However, we did only find out this morning, so that is acceptable. I am looking forward to having children." Hiei shoots a glance over to Kurama, "Especially having been unaware of the possibility." Kurama winces.
Shippo looks between the two and stands up, holding a hand out to Kurama, "Why don't we go for a walk?" Kurama accepts the hand up and walks off with Shippo.
Inuyasha hops down once they're gone. "Was that really necessary, Hiei," he asks. "I told you to talk this through, so we could move past this. I don't really want to have to be in the middle of a fight between you two right now."
Sesshomaru clears his throat softly, drawing their attention, "Perhaps you two could explain to this Sesshomaru what exactly the problem is? One does not wish to make assumptions without all the facts." Inuyasha explains the issue. "Well, this Sesshomaru is surprised at your mate's restraint. Fire youkai are not usually so forgiving, or lenient."
Inuyasha cocks his head to the side like a confused puppy, "Waddaya mean?"
"This was a betrayal of trust, something fire youkai value above all else. Most would have become violent, possibly murderous at such actions from their mates. From what you have told me he has not even raised his voice. It shows a level of self control rarely found in the world." He bows his head in respect to Hiei.
Hiei's eyes harden slightly, "He has been told not to repeat this blunder. The fox rarely, if ever, repeats the same mistake twice."
Inuyasha rubs the back of his neck, "Just so I have a heads up, should I expect the passive aggressive behavior to last for a while?"
Hiei thinks it over for a moment, "I'm not sure, Inu. I hope not. I would rather move forward than dwell." Hiei glares into his tea for a moment before setting it aside. "I will try to control myself."

Shippo leads Kurama off to a secluded section of the yard curtained off by rose bushes with a bench nestled beneath a magnolia tree. He sits them down on the bench, and leans back to look up at the sky. "Wanna talk about it?"
"About what," Kurama asks with a soft chuckle. "How one of my mates is pregnant and I never wanted children? Or about not telling the other mate that children were physically possible so I didn't have to crush his hopes for a family when I told him I didn't want them."
"Either. Both. I'm all ears." Shippo shifts around getting more comfortable. "I do have one question, though."
"What is it?"
"Is there any particular reason you don't want kits?"
"They're messy, contrary, and needy. And I highly doubt I have the qualifications to raise a child."
Shippo laughs, "You know? I'm not even going to argue with that."
"What?" Kurama looks at him quizzically.
"Children ARE messy, contrary, and needy, and I don't think I've ever met one person with all the qualifications to raise a child that hasn't already raised a few." Shippo laughs again. "But you have to remember. Children are also beautiful, loving, and a part of you that lives on long after you are gone. They also move past the messy, needy point relatively quickly." He says the last in a reassuring tone.
"What are we supposed to do, though. Even if I can get past my personal issues, Hiei and I have to leave soon to work for the two other kings. I don't like the idea of Inuyasha and the kits being used as leverage against us if they find out about it." Kurama sighs and looks to their mates and the rose bushes' branches shift to create a window to allow for a better view.
"Don't worry about Inuyasha. Even if he couldn't take care of himself, Sesshomaru would protect him. Even when they were enemies, Sesshomaru wouldn't let anyone ELSE kill him." He laughs, "He's soooo territorial, especially when it comes to family."

Inuyasha glances over to where Shippo led Kurama and sees the roses have shifted to create a small window. He turns back to the two other men. "So, Hiei. Why don't we go play with the pups for a bit?" He stands and offers a hand up to Hiei with a smile. Hiei grabs it and pulls himself up. "Gonna join us, Aniki?"
"Indeed." He gracefully rises to his feet and strides to his children, Inuyasha and Hiei following behind. The children see their father approaching and hop down from the jungle gym.
Etsuo giggle and makes a running leap into his father's arm, "Chichi! Are you gonna play with us today too?"
Fusao, having run up behind his brother grips Sesshomaru's pant leg and smiles up, "Can we play hide and seek, chichi," he asks.
Sesshomaru stoops down to gather him up as well. He seems to consider the request for a moment. "That seems like a wise decision," he smiles warmly at the twins, "What do you think, Akinori?"
Akinori grins slyly up at his father. "So long as we throw in a few rules.... Just to keep things fair."
Inuyasha groans, "What are you up to, runt?"
Akinori puts a hand to his chest managing to look offended, "Why, dearest uncle, I was simply hoping to keep the game fair for all involved. I'm only suggesting three rules. One to keep things fair for those new to the grounds," He says with a pointed look at Hiei. "And one to keep things fair for the rest of us."
"And what are these stipulations," Hiei asks eyes narrowed.
Akinori grins. "The first rule is to limit the range of the game to this wing and the gardens here. Hiei, and Kurama if he joins the game, are new to the grounds and won't know all the nooks and crannies we can hide in yet, the second is to ban the Hiei from using his Jagan to find us, and the third is the ban Kurama from manipulating plants to find us. That way they actually have to seek."
Sesshomaru nods, "That seems fair." He sets Etsuo down. "Now, who shall be first to seek?"
Immediately the children and Inuyasha chorus, "Not it!" Followed immediately by a quiet, "Not it," from Sesshomaru.
Hiei looks between them all confusedly. Inuyasha grins, "You'll catch on eventually." He points to a corner of the yard, "Now go over there, close your eyes and count to one hundred. When you're done counting, yell out, 'ready or not, here I come!'"
Hiei scowls at his mate for a moment before stalking off the corner. The moment he has his back turned the children dash off to hide, and Sesshomaru walks calmly into the house already knowing where he wants to hide. Inuyasha runs over to check on Kurama quickly before hiding.

Kurama watches as his mates and Sesshomaru rise and move to the children. Shippo, watching over Kurama's shoulder, laughs, "Looks like Sessh has decided to play with the kits today. This should be interesting."
"What do you mean?"
"Akinori is sure to have something up his sleeve... look, see him negotiating with that sly grin? He's trying to tip the scales in his favor. The question is, will Sesshomaru let him?"
They watch as the discussion comes to a close and hear a collective, "Not it!" Followed by a brief discussion and Hiei stalking off to a corner. "Looks like Hiei is it," Kurama observes quietly.
"Look, Inuyasha is headed this way." Shippo grins, "lets find out what Akinori is up to."
Inuyasha dashes around the bushes and grins, "Hope you two are having fun. Just so you know, we're playing hide and seek, two extra rules, no jagan or plant manipulation as means of finding people, area limited to the garden and this wing of the palace. Akinori made it sound all fair, but I doubt it is. Gotta go hide, don't want to get found first. He's already a quarter of the way through. You two should join in next round." He gives Kurama a quick peck on the lips before dashing off, hopping onto the roof, and disappearing from sight with a wide, childish grin.
Kurama smiles after his new mate, "It's almost like he's a kit himself," he observes.
"Sometimes he gets like that. Not surprising really." Kurama looks at him quizzically. "He didn't have much of a childhood when he was younger, so he takes what he can get when he can get it. Plus Sessh is playing too, so they get to do something they missed out on when Inuyasha was little. So, should we join in the next round?"
"Yes, I assume one of us will have to be it when we do as the new comers, not it." Kurama grins at Shippo.
Shippo laughs, "That's fine. I know all the kit's hiding spots anyway. I doubt I'll have trouble finding anyone."
Kurama chuckles darkly, "We'll see."

Inuyasha dashed along the roof for a while before hanging from the eave on the opposite side, pulling out a grate in the wall, and squeezing into a ventilation shaft that ran through the space between the ceiling and the roof. He closes the grate behind him and wiggles through the maze to a space just above the kits room. He looks through the grate there and spies the twins pulling up a few floor boards to hide under them. The floorboards fit back in place almost perfectly. Inuyasha grins at seeing this new hiding spot before moving silently through the shafts to look for Akinori and Sesshomaru.

Hiei finishes counting, shouts, "Ready or not, here I come!", and dashes inside. Tracking his prey by scent was useless. The whole wing was saturated with their scents, so he relied on simple process of elimination. It took him very little time to find the twins, who were giggling softly under the floorboards. They laughed harder when they were caught and jumped up onto his shoulders hugging him around the neck. He smiled slightly at their antics before puling them off and setting them on the floor. He ruffled their hair, "You two should go outside and wait for the others to be found."
They ran off with shouts of, "Yes, Oji-Hiei!"
Hiei wandered the wing, eventually finding Sesshomaru sitting in his study reading. "Hn. Why aren't you hiding properly?"
Sesshomaru closes his book and sets it aside. "This Sesshomaru plays this game with his pups to help develop their tracking and deduction skills. From your reputation you don't need such training. Especially in such a limited setting." Hiei nods and turns to leave, pausing when Sesshomaru adds, "A word of advice?" Hiei nods, looking back to his host. "Do not rely on your eyes when looking for Akinori. He is rather skilled at transforming himself for one so young." With those parting words he sweeps out of the room heading for the garden.
Hiei sits down in one of the chairs in the room to rethink his strategy.

Inuyasha grins to himself having watched the exchange between his brother and his mate. 'I wonder what Hiei will come up with to get around Akinori's tricks. He watches his mate stand and leave, heading out to the garden. Inuyasha wiggles through the vents to a grate that looks out over the garden. He watches Hiei discuss something with Kurama and grins when Kurama smiles, grows a plant in his hand and hands the leaves to Hiei. Hiei grabs a cup of tea and paces the leaves in it before heating it in his hands. After a few minutes he drinks the brew and heads into the wing again.
Inuyasha moves to where he knows Akinori is hiding and waits for his mate to find him. He had watched earlier as Akinori had gone into Sesshomaru's dojo and transformed into a weapons rack.

Hiei moves quickly from room to room, looking for the telltale yellow glow of transformation magic. He has to hurry because the quickly brewed tea would wear off soon. As he opens the door to thee dojo, the tea wears off, but not before he catches a glimmer of yellow. He couldn't pinpoint the location of the kit, but he knows the boy is in here. He enters closing the door firmly behind him. He starts inspecting the few objects orderly placed against the walls, looking for any and all oddities. His sharp eyes notice one of the weapons racks is slightly crooked against the wall. He reaches out and tries lifting one of the weapons on the rack and grins when he lifts the whole thing.
"Akinori, go join your father and the other kits while I find Inuyasha." The kit transforms with the scruff of his neck in Hiei's grip.
"Hai, Uncle," he grumbles. When he is set down he asks, "If you find out Inuyasha's trick, will you tell it to me? Only Otosan seems to be able to find him until he wants to be found." He looks up at Hiei with hopeful eyes.
"No," Hiei says with a slight frown. "If you cannot figure it out yourself, then it defeats the purpose of the game. Besides your Otosan sees this game as a sort of test. I will not interfere with that." The kit crosses his arms dejectedly. Hiei smirks. "Think how much more rewarding it'll be when you do figure it out." He leaves to find his mate, wondering for the umpteenth time why he cant find any trace of his scent except for the path they had all traveled through to get to the gardens earlier in the day.
xxxxxx
Inuyasha grins at the interaction between the two, happy with his mate's dealings with his nephews. He immediately crawls through the vents to the nearest opening to the outside, opens it after making sure no one could see it and climbs out and onto the roof where he waits, watching the clouds pass by, for Hiei to find him. Soon, Hiei hops up onto the roof nearby and comes over to him. Inuyasha grins, "Took ya long enough, Koi."
"Hn. The eldest child proved problematic."
"Mmmm," Inuyasha agrees, "Good thing Sessh gave you a hint, huh?" He grins mischievously as he rises to his feet and hops down from the roof, followed by a confused Hiei.
"How do you know about that? You weren't there." Hiei scowls.
"Wasn't where?" Inuyasha looks at Hiei with a sly smile. Hiei growls. "Think how much more rewarding it'll be when you do figure it out," he parrots Hiei's words to Akinori back at him with a grin as they come back to the group.
Akinori groans, "How does he DO that?!" Kurama quirks an eyebrow in question. Akinori scowls at his uncle as he explains, "Somehow Ojisan always knows what everyone has been up to during the game and only Otosan know why." He crosses his arms across his chest and adds with a pout, "And he wont tell any of us Oji's secret."
Inuyasha grins and strikes a goofy pose, "All hail the Great Shadow. Bane of All Seekers! He Who... OW!" He rubs his head where Sesshomaru cuffed him. "What the hell Sesshomaru?!"
"We are about to have company. This Sesshomaru will not have you acting the fool before others."
As he finishes speaking one of the servants enters the garden leading a young demon carrying a sealed scroll. The servant bows, "My lords, a messenger has come from King Yomi."
