I do, though, own parts of the setting, people, but that’s it.))
Authors Note: This
is an AU, and I hope I get everyone’s personalities right and that people like
it. Before I begin, I’d like to point
out that the legal drinking age in Japan is 20, so the guys are going to be a
little older than that.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
The music was as loud as the lights that lit up the nightclub named
Midnight. It was on one of the main
streets of the city, and also one of the busiest. Then again, it was Saturday night in the city, and two young men
had been offered jobs there.
One young man, his black hair slicked back on his head, folded his arms
as the line outside grew with people who wanted inside. His brown eyes looked around the inside of
the nightclub where he worked. “Hey,
who’s the new chick?” he asked the redhead behind the bar.
The redhead looked at the bouncer and smiled as his emerald gaze turned
to a single young woman on the stage in front of the microphone. Her brown hair was up in a clip as she
started warming up. “Oh, don’t tell me
you forgot all about Songbird, Yusuke,” he said to him.
Yusuke looked at the woman on the stage. “Songbird” was merely a stage name, and hardly anyone, except the
manager, knew her real name. Other than
that, she was a hot little number on the stage, and it was only her first real
performance of the night.
The manager, a slightly muscular man of nearly 40, looked at the two
people. “Do I pay you to chit-chat or
to work?” he asked them.
“Working,” Yusuke answered as the redhead went to work, scrubbing the
bar again.
“That’s more like it,” he answered as the woman’s song ended and he
looked at her. “Songbird, you ready for
tonight?”
Songbird blinked and looked around a little nervously. She hadn’t noticed anyone hearing her
before. But as she looked down, the
manager looked up at her. “I hope so,
Mako-san,” she answered, bowing.
Mako chuckled. “You’ll do fine,
little lady,” he said. “Hey,
Minamino! Get our little Songbird here
a drink!”
Kurama’s head jerked up as the woman named “Songbird” walked over to
them. She had a yellow open shirt with
a white camisole underneath. Her brown
pants almost seemed endless if it weren’t for her sandaled feet. He watched her sit down in front of
him. “So, um, what can I get you?” he
asked her, dangerously close to blushing.
Songbird giggled lightly. She
hadn’t really gotten to know them yet, so she figured to start him off
easily. “How about a club soda?” she
answered. “Don’t want to mess my voice
up.”
Kurama nodded, turning his head.
He couldn’t believe he was almost blushing over an employee. “Coming,” he replied over his shoulder.
Songbird looked at the person in front of him, her elbows on the
table. “Are you sure you’re all right?”
she asked, her face full of concern.
Kurama turned around, his composure regained as he set the drink in
front of her. “I’m fine,” he answered
as Mako clapped his hands.
“All right, it’s 10:00, so everyone be sharp!” he said, which literally
meant for everyone to do their jobs. He
went to unlock the doors and to help Yusuke keep some of the pesky ones out.
Kurama looked at the woman in front of him as she took a sip of her
drink. “I suppose this means you’ll
have to head back,” he said to her.
“I guess so,” she answered, smiling as she finished her drink. She lowered her head shyly as she slipped
out of the chair. “I’ll see you in a
few,” she said as she headed back to the dressing room.
Kurama watched her leave as he picked up the glass and wash it
out. His focus, however, was averted as
one of his friends, Kuwabara, had sat down in front of him. “Ah, so Yukina didn’t join you, ne?”
“No,” Kuwabara answered.
“Yukina didn’t want to go.”
“A shame,” the redhead answered with a smile. “So, the usual?” As
Kuwabara nodded, he fixed a strawberry daiquiri. “You just happened to come on a good night,” Kurama continued to
make conversation. “There’s a new
singer debuting tonight.”
Kuwabara’s eyes widened slightly at the deadened tone in the redhead’s
voice. “So, what’s the new person
like?” he asked him.
“I don’t know,” he answered truthfully. “It’s her first night, and she was a little skittish.”
“Nervous?”
Kurama nodded. “She comes off
like she’s shy.” Within a half-hour’s
time, the club was packed with people dancing and drinking at the bar, which
Kurama was having a field day serving drinks to of-age patrons. Kuwabara had another daiquiri and figured he
had a good seat to see the singer.
Kurama, though, was a little too busy making sure the people got their
drinks and were satisfied to really care.
Mako had finally gotten on stage and took the microphone into his
hand. “How’s everyone doing tonight?”
he asked, and was answered by numerous cheers and whistles. “Well, you people here are in for a real
treat. We’ve got a new person here at
Midnight. It’s her first night
performing here, so everyone give a good Midnight welcome to Songbird!”
Cheers, whistles, and catcalls came from the audience as Songbird
appeared, wearing a long ocean green dress that nearly reached the floor. Her blue eyes seemed to sparkle a lot more
than earlier. Her brown hair had been
pulled up on her head. She bowed to
Mako, who handed her the microphone, and looked at the crowd. “How is everyone doing tonight?”
Just the mere sound of her voice made them whistle.
“This is my first night here, and already I feel loved,” she said,
smiling. When someone blew her a kiss,
she blushed lightly. “Now, if you all
keep on, I won’t be able to sing tonight.”
“Hey, is that her?” Kuwabara asked Kurama, who was free at the moment.
Kurama shifted his eyes for a minute and nodded just as someone
approached the bar. “That would be
Songbird, Kuwabara,” he answered.
Back on stage, Songbird couldn’t help but feel nervous. It was her first real performance, and she
wanted to make them all proud. As she
nodded, a soft melody filled the speakers.
Taking a deep breath, she began her first song.
“Don’t tell me the things you think I should hear, when you can’t read
my mind,” the soft-yet-nervous voice filled the room. “All it seems to me is that you’re two steps behind.” She took two steps backward. “Don’t tell me the words that I want to
hear, because you don’t have a clue.
All you want is for someone to be close to you.”
Kuwabara, along with several people at the bar, tapped to the rhythm of
the song. “She’s not so bad,” he said.
“After all that we’ve said and done, it’s a wonder we’re still
together,” the voice began to get stronger.
“But why did you have to leave me forever?”
“Awwwww….” Someone said in the audience.
“So, just hold me tight, and never let me out of your sight. Don’t be so blue, I just wanna be close to
you.” /1/ She took the microphone from near her chin as the song ended and the
club erupted in whistles. She raised
the microphone again. “Thank you,” she
said, bowing slightly as Mako was handed the microphone.
“Thank you, Songbird,” he said as the woman shyly walked off the
stage. “She’s only doing one song
tonight, but tomorrow night, she’ll come back for more.” After turning off the microphone, the dance
music started bumping and the people got up from their seats to dance.
Songbird sat down at the bar next to an orange-haired person, which
sent a slight shiver through Kurama’s body.
There was just something about this Songbird that was making him feel
like jelly. Usually around women, the
redhead was controlled enough to handle it.
“You were wonderful up there,” he finally had the courage to say.
She blushed and looked down slightly.
“Thank you,” she answered.
“Oh, Kuwabara, this is Songbird,” Kurama said, making the young woman
raise her face. “Songbird, this is one
my friends, Kuwabara.”
“Hi,” she said as Kuwabara nodded.
She nodded as well and then turned to face Kurama just as soon as
someone had walked in the club. He had
black hair streaked with blue and black eyes.
Other than a white tank top and blue jeans, he didn’t look like he would
cause any trouble. He strolled up to
the bar behind Songbird.
“So, this is where you are.”
Songbird’s eyes widened in near shock as she turned around. A hand covered her mouth as she recognized
the person addressing her. “Sato-san,”
her voice matched the surprised look on her face.
“Dating another man behind my back?” Sato asked her, grabbing her wrist
tightly in his hand. “Come on, you
little…”
“Stop it, you’re hurting me,” she said, trying to pull her arm out of
his tight hold. Her blue eyes now held
fear as she continued to struggle.
“Please, just let me go.”
“You’re coming with me!” he said, forcing Songbird off of the chair and
nearly on her face. “Come on,
whore.” He bumped into someone. “Get out of my way.”
Kuwabara stood in his way.
“That’s not a way to treat a woman,” he said, crossing his arms.
Kurama took it as a distraction as he swung his lithe body over the bar
counter and near Songbird. He knew
about Kuwabara’s code against hitting women, and right now he thought of
getting Songbird free from her cage.
But before he could assist her, Sato had pulled the shocked woman
against him.
The poor woman could barely move, talk… or even think.
“She’s my woman, and I’ll do whatever the hell I want to do to her,”
Sato said, pushing Kuwabara out of the way and pulling the woman behind him
like a rag doll, who had now managed a small sob from her mouth. He turned to her and gave her a vicious
backhand that made her head snap in another direction. “You should be sorry, slut,” he said and was
about to walk out with her when the orange-haired man stood in his way again. “I thought I told you to get out of the
way!” He clocked Kuwabara on the cheek.
Kuwabara noticed that Sato had let go of the woman, which gave him a
good chance to hit him back, which he did.
“That was for hitting her,” he said to him as Kurama went to check on
her.
She had hit her head against the metal pole of the barstool, and her
hair seemed to cover most of her face.
Kurama held her against him and pulled the hair from her face, revealing
the bruise on the side of her head and a horrific bruise on her cheek next to
her lips, which were red with blood.
“Are you all right?” he asked her, hoping that it wasn’t the worst-case
scenario.
The woman’s eyes opened and looked around, trying to find the source of
the voice. She blinked, seeing a pair of
emerald green eyes looking down at her in concern. “Mi…” she started to speak, but her eyes widened in horror at the
blood at her lips.
A patron had seen what had happened and already called 119.
“Minamino-san?” The name had
finally escaped her lips.
Kurama blinked at the use of his human family name and looked down at
the visibly shaken woman in his arms.
“I’m right here,” he answered, looking into her blue eyes. “Do you need to go to the hospital?”
She tried to sit up, but nearly fell backwards if it weren’t for
Kurama’s arm behind her.
“That answered my question,” he answered as the unit had entered the
club. A few were police officers, which
restrained Sato and Kuwabara away from each other, while a couple more headed
in their direction. While they were
attending to her, one question was burning into Kurama’s mind, and he had to
ask her. “Who’s Sato?”
The worry in Songbird’s eyes grew as she answered him. “My boyfriend.”
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
/1/ That was something I made up off the top of my
head. This just proves what washing
dishes will do to your brain.
Kit: Well,
this is the end of my first chapter and it’s a cliffy! I know, I know… but the next chapter will
clear everything up. In the meantime,
please review.
