Genkai didn’t look up from her game at the knock on the door. “Come in, Shiori,” she called, already sounding exasperated.
Shiori smiled as she came in. “Hello, just dropping by to check on things,” she said putting her purse down on a table. “Oh, new game?” she asked, in her ever polite and pleasant voice. “Yes, now stop with the niceties and tell me what’s got you upset,” Genkai said gruffly. Instantly Shiori’s smile fell. “Why can’t he just tell me already! I’m not stupid you know. No boy, no matter how intelligent, goes on that many school trips. And like I wouldn’t notice he deliberately takes extra time on homework to make it seem like he’s actually trying when he already knows the answers! And the ruined clothes! Oh my god! I can’t believe he expects me to believe the stories he gives me about them!” she ranted as she paced back and forth behind Genkai. Genkai grunted. “Just tell the boy you know he’s a demon already,” she said, blasting another digital monster to smithereens. “Oh, I can’t do that!” Shiori said exasperatedly. “I want him to come to me with anything! And being a demon does in fact fall under the anything category. That and being gay and getting random girls knocked up!” “You’re being dramatic,” Genkai replied, still more absorbed in the game than Shiori’s words. “Of course I am! I’m a pre-menopausal woman!” Shiori snapped before taking a few deep breaths and visibly calming down. “Why won’t he tell me Genkai? Does he really think I’d stop loving him or stop seeing him as my son?” Genkai sighed. “I don’t know how that fox’s mind works, Shiori. You should just sit him down and tell him you know all about demons. You know he worries he’s going to get you hurt because of his work with Koenma. It’s his biggest weakness.” Shiori frowned. “I can take care of myself.” “I know that. But he doesn’t,” Genkai said pausing the game and turning around for once. “It’d be better if you both just came out with it. Especially since you already know all about his secret. Doesn’t seem fair to keep your own.” Shiori sighed and sat down on a nearby stool. “I can’t believe they haven’t figured it out… I mean… is my energy blocking really that good?” she asked, turning to Genkai with a bit of confusion. “You always said my energy masks were crap.” “For me they are. But I’ve see you developing your skills… they haven’t,” Genkai pointed out. “Besides, maybe if you tell Kurama you don’t need protection then he won’t end up getting hurt protecting you like he did in the Dark Tournament.” Shiori scowled at that. “Oh! Don’t you dare bring that up! You know I would have helped you with Toguro, you old bat!” “You were busy,” Genkai replied turning back to her game. “With what?” Shiori demanded, hands on her hips. “I wasn’t dying or anything!” “You’re out of practice,” Genkai said, trying a different tactic. “You had plenty of warning. I can get back into practice in a couple months and you know it!” Shiori shot back. “You’d have had to explain it to Kurama.” “Then we wouldn’t be having this conversation,” Shiori replied sweetly. Genkai didn’t respond again. Shiori sighed and paced a bit more. “Maybe I should just let my barriers fall and let them all come running to investigate the power source,” she muttered thoughtfully. “Hiei might slice you apart before he realizes it’s just you,” Genkai pointed out. “He’s ruthless and moves faster than he can think sometimes.” Shiori rolled her eyes. “I’m sure he’d be able to stop himself mid-swing. And even if he couldn’t… dying by a sword has a bit of irony to it. Better than withering away that’s for sure… Of course, Hiei’s his own problem. How thick do they think I am? The boy sleeps in a tree half the time! Like that’s a human trait! And who carries around a sword anyway?” “I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to notice the sword,” Genkai muttered. “Like I could miss it,” Shiori replied. “I swear he’s killed a small flock of birds around our house with it.” Genkai sighed heavily and turned again. “Shiori, why don’t you ever just rant to your husband?” “Because I signed a contract that means I can’t tell him about Spirit World, remember?” Shiori said lightly. “Only one person. I told Shuichi’s father. I can’t tell anybody else.” “Why do you keep calling him that when you know his name’s actually Kurama?” Genkai asked, raising an eyebrow. “I named my son Shuichi for a reason, Genkai! Like hell I won’t even use the name I picked out for him,” she snapped angrily. Genkai rubbed her forehead and stood up. “Alright, you know what? Here’s my advice… one teammate to another… tell the boys tomorrow or I will!” she said firmly. “It’s getting ridiculous!” “Don’t you dare!” Shiori said, eyes wide in mixture of emotions. “Shuichi should be able to tell me when he’s ready.” “You’ll be waiting a hell of a long time if you wait for Kurama to tell you something that he thinks will disappoint you,” Genkai replied. “The boy’s so devoted to you I’m almost embarrassed by it.” Shiori thought on that for a long minute before suddenly her posture changed to a more determined one. “Alright, ya know what? Call them now,” she said firmly. “What?” Genkai asked in confusion. “Call them and tell them to come here now, before I change my mind. I’ll just have to clear the air right now before I drive myself insane,” Shiori said, nodding a bit to herself. Genkai snorted at that. “Think you’re about twenty years too late, Shiori,” she muttered before heading over to the phone to do what her friend had asked. Just dropping Shiori’s name assured that at least three of the boys would come running. Hiei would… if he was around to hear one of the others get called. He was always a bit tricky to contact. Shiori was sitting on the couch watching Genkai blow up more digital terrors when the sound of footsteps reached them and the door slammed open. “Genkai what happ- Mother?” Kurama stopped mid sentence once he saw Shiori sitting there perfectly fine. Shiori smiled. “Hello dear, come in. We have some things we need to discuss,” she said waving to a few seats. A very confused Kurama, Yusuke, and Kuwabara came in and sat down. “Granny, you said this was something urgent about Shiori… but she’s fine,” Yusuke prompted. Genkai grunted. “I didn’t say she was hurt,” she pointed out. “Besides, I was just the messenger. She’s the one that wanted to call you.” Shiori smiled a bit. “It’s true. I asked her to call you all. Mostly because I was already here,” she said, confusing Kurama even more. “You were already here? Why Mother?” he asked, practically falling off the couch with how close to the edge he was sitting. Clearly he was nervous and upset. Shiori’d never actually seen him like this before. “We just have some things that are long over due to be talked about it is all,” Shiori said, laying a hand on Kurama’s. “What kind of things?” Kuwabara asked. “Demonic things,” Shiori stated. Three sets of huge eyes whipped over to Genkai. “Genkai!” Kurama exclaimed in horror. “I didn’t tell her anything, fox!” Genkai replied, still not turning around. “It’s true,” Shiori assured the teens. “I’ve known about demons since before you were even born, Kurama.” Kurama’s eyes got even wider. “W-what did you call me?” Shiori frowned. “Genkai’s been on me to call you that for years…” she said before shaking her head. “Still like Shuichi better though if you don’t mind. You’ll always be Shuichi to me anyway.” “M-mother… how?” Shiori smiled a bit and moved over to the edge of the couch to wrap her arms around her very shocked son. “Wait for that one to sink in and then I’ll tell you how,” she promised. “Hiei, stop sitting in a tree like a squirrel and come down here. It won’t hurt for you to listen to this too,” she added, half turning to the window. The teens gave another start of surprise that she’d sensed Hiei. There was a few long moments before Hiei climbed into the window and sat on the sill. “Explain,” he said, eyes narrow. “In a minute,” she replied. “I think Shuichi’s brain needs a moment to reset still,” she joked, brushing Kurama’s red hair back for a moment. Finally Kurama pulled back a little to look up at his mother in shock. “Mother… how?” he asked, still clearly shocked but a little more coherent. “Well… it’s really quite simple, dear. You see, about twenty years ago or so I held Yusuke’s current job,” she said gesturing to the green clad teen. “But I retired when I met your father and he asked me to marry him. Well… a little before that but essentially he’s why I quit. Fighting demons and corrupt humans every day simply wasn’t all that appealing to me anymore.” Hiei snorted a bit. “I don’t believe it,” he stated. Shiori sighed a little. “Let me pull down my energy masks then,” she said, closing her eyes so that her true spiritual energy was revealed. All four teens recoiled a bit in shock. “Satisfied?” “Outta practice,” Genkai grumbled. “Not as old as you though…” Shiori replied sweetly. “Mother… why didn’t you tell me?” Kurama asked. Shiori sighed again. “I was sort of hoping you’d tell me your secret first, dear. But since you didn’t seem willing to do that and since you apparently think I don’t notice all of the blood and ruined clothes you four come home from those ‘school trips’ with, I decided to lay everything out.” “That and she’s pissed you keep trying to get yourself killed for her, fox,” Genkai added as another explosion sounded. “I am not pissed,” she said, turning to give Genkai a slightly offended look. “I’m flattered, it’s very sweet. Though you could stop that now, dear,” she added to Kurama. “You’re a horrible liar,” Genkai said. “Actually, I’m an amazing liar which is why we’re in this situation,” Shiori replied giving the older woman an exasperated look. “Just keep blowing things up in your silly little video game, won’t you? I have it handled here.” Genkai grunted a little. “Don’t know why you had to do this here…” “It was convenient,” Shiori said with a sigh. “Anyway, if you still don’t believe me, call Koenma and have him pull my old file. Though… he might take a while to find it. He never was very organized…” “Koenma? Find a twenty year old file?” Yusuke asked before laughing. “Yeah, that’ll be the day.” “When did you realize?” Kurama asked quietly. “How long have you known?” Shiori thought for a moment. “Probably when you were five and already reading books far too advanced did it really click that something wasn’t quite right. That and you were a very quiet baby, Shuichi. But I didn’t think you might be a demon or partially a demon until I saw you jump out of a tree in the back yard and land without a scratch when you were six. No human child could have jumped that far.” Kurama blushed a bit. “I guess I wasn’t as good of hiding it as I thought…” he muttered. “Oh, no, dear,” Shiori said patting his knee fondly. “You were very good at hiding it, it’s just I knew what to look for in finding disguised demons. It was all little things that added up over the years. Especially once I started really paying attention.” “Man… this is weird,” Kuwabara said rubbing his head. “I never thought this conversation would go this way…” “I was thinking more hysterics myself,” Yusuke agreed. Shiori sighed again. “You boys don’t give me enough credit. I’m perfectly reasonable most times. Anyway, this won’t change anything. I won’t tell you all to not go fight demons or fight in stupid tournaments to save the world or anything. Though using mirrors that will kill you, throwing yourself in front of large attacks, using life energy in an attack, and deliberately letting parts of your anatomy get mutilated should be considered completely off limits from now on,” she said, leveling each boy with a glare respectively. Kurama blanched some. “You know about the Forlorn Hope?” “Of course I do,” she said, waving the question away a bit. “Every since I figured out you were a demon I’ve sort of been waiting for Botan to drift by about something involving you. Wasn’t expecting you to break into the King’s Vault but I’m not mad at you since you were doing it for me and all,” she explained brushing his hair back. “Well, I was a little mad but I’ve gotten over it.” “A little… yeah… that’s what it was,” Genkai muttered. “Needed a new table after that visit.” Shiori laughed a bit and rubbed her head. “Like I said, I’ve gotten over it,” she said getting to her feet and grabbing her purse. “Now, it’s getting late and I still have dinner to make. You’re all invited to join us, of course. Except you Genkai since I know you won’t anyway.” “Fine here thanks,” Genkai agreed. Shiori waited a minute before putting her hands on her hips. “Well? Don’t tell me teenage boys are turning down free food! Come on!” she said before leaving the room and starting for the temple stairs. “Since when did ‘invited’ mean no choice?” Yusuke asked in confusion as he got up to follow his friend’s mother. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
