Chapter One: Passion Play
The night was cold, and Hiei looked at the stars above the unfamiliar sky with a sense of nostalgia. After the three years of patrol duty, with only a handful of days spent on this side of the border, it felt as if it he was wandering in to a territory only held together by memories. How many fights on this side of the border had the moron and the oaf dragged him in to? Admittedly, those were some of the best fights of his life and he had developed ties that he never before believed possible. Not that he would ever speak such a thing aloud.
Hiei nodded his good-byes to the two standing guards at the entrance to the tunnels as he shoved his hands in his pockets and started out of the winding tunnels towards the human world that lie beyond. Patrol duty was hardly eventful, but tracking down wandering and lost humans was beneath him. It was a waste of time. He was glad that it had been decided that there would be a month between the end of this term and the next tournament. It would allow demons who migrated to the human world to return for the tournament, as well as those who had wandered through Makai after the last tournament's end.
During that month, those who had been on patrol duty would be relieved and replaced with standing guards, two on each side of the border, who would prevent humans from stumbling in to Makai. The demon world was a dangerous place for innocents, but most especially when the bloodlust for battle was reaching a peak. It would break the fragile peace they had developed if humans began to die in their lands.
With his speed, it was a quick trip to Kurama's city apartment. It never surprised him that the fox had chosen this particular apartment complex, nor the building that he knew Kurama had insisted he be placed in. It was directly across the street from a large nature preserve, and Kurama's building was the surrounded by old trees. Hiei slipped in through the same window that was always left unlocked, and stepped in to the place he had spent his handful of days off patrol duty.
The setting was familiar now, filled with Kurama's scent rather than the antiseptics and cleaners that it had smelled of when the fox had first moved in. The room around him was what Hiei had begun to think of as his room. It was also Kurama's study room. Bookshelves lined one wall, and most of the shelves were full. There was a vine in a pot on the windowsill that Hiei deftly avoided as he stepped on to the carpet. The vine looked harmless, but Hiei knew better. The same plants were all at all the portals leading in to the fox's home, and would immediately halt any unwanted presence and hold it there until their master returned home.
The front door opened, and Hiei's hand slid down to the hilt of his sword. The usual tell-tale jingle of keys was absent, and he couldn't smell the scent of cinnamon and blood that usually permeated the air around his friend. Hiei stepped noiselessly from the bedroom, and nearly ran face-first in to the orange-haired oaf.
"Hey! Watch where you're going shrimp!" Kuwabara shrieked, and Hiei's eyes narrowed.
"What are you doing here?" Hiei asked blandly.
Yusuke swore loudly as he heaved groceries in the door, and banged his elbow on the hard metal of the door. Kurama tittered softly behind the former detective, and Hiei's wariness sky-rocketed. It was rare for Kurama to invite others in to his home. This was his sanctuary, and he generally preferred it to be kept separate from the rest of his life.
"Hiei." Kurama smiled at the presence of the fire demon and promptly shooed the two others to the kitchen with instructions of where everything was to go.
"Come on 'Rama," Yusuke whined. "Why did we have to be your labor for carrying your groceries up six flights of stairs and get stuck putting them away?"
"It's the price you two must pay for being too drunk to get home, and thus imposing yourselves on me." Kurama glanced behind him at the pouting former detective. A wry smile curved his lips. "Besides, I hardly had enough food to feed your bottomless appetite when you'll undoubtedly whine to me in the morning about how hungry you are."
Yusuke grumbled under his breath, but did Kurama's bidding. Hiei raised a delicate eyebrow. "You went drinking with that lot?"
Kurama laughed, and the fire demon was captivated by how the emotion made his emerald eyes sparkle with mirth. "Hardly. I was walking home from the library, and was nearly crushed by the weight of these two when they were forcefully removed from the bar. I offered my hospitality. After all, there is much to celebrate tonight, and I could hardly allow these two to wander without supervision. I shudder at the thought of how much trouble they would have gotten in to on their own. Yusuke does not yet have the control to hold back if he got in to a fight while drunk, when his defenses and natural restraint is compromised."
"Hn." Hiei glanced behind him as Yusuke eagerly tore in to the beer that Kurama had fetched for them, and Kuwabara promptly proceeded to punch his friend in the stomach to steal the beverage from his hand.
"They'll be up for awhile, until the beer runs out." Kurama motioned for the fire demon to follow, and Hiei did without question. The way his eye nearly twitched told Kurama that Hiei was tired, cranky, and likely at the end of his patience. He had not expected Kurama to have company, and was annoyed.
Kurama led them to his bedroom, and closed the door behind him. A vine, the very same ones that guarded the entrances to his home, grew with a small flare of the fox's energy. The vine crept over the door, sealing the wood closed. The vines swelled with energy, and their meaty tendrils blocked out the sound drifting down the hallway from the wrestling match commencing in Kurama's living room. "No one is to enter or leave this room but Hiei and I unless of an emergency," Kurama instructed. The vines pulsed in time with their master's heartbeat, swallowing the sounds from the other room.
Hiei had no doubts that they would obey the fox's command. If the oaf and the moron attempted to disturb them tonight and weren't dying, they would be in for a very interesting battle, and a very pissed off fox. He took off his cloak with slow deliberateness, and ignored the weight of the fox's gaze on him.
Kurama smiled to himself as Hiei removed his sword and cloak, placing them both carefully close to the bed, and thus within easy reaching distance if danger visited them in the night. The red-head took the time to observe his charge. Hiei had grown taller, as he grew in power. Kurama knew from the brief moments that Hiei had slipped away from duty to visit that Mukuro had been training him when he wasn't patrolling, which limited Hiei's time to himself drastically. When he wasn't eating, sleeping, or patrolling, he was training. Hiei slid his shirt off, and Kurama's eyes appraised the body before him. Hiei had put on more muscle, and each was clearly defined and honed. Hiei was still lithe, but he had also filled out. There would be no question in anyone's mind that Hiei was a killer, a predator. Someone to be feared.
Kurama met Hiei in the middle of the room. Fingers calloused by the years of holding a sword entwined in red hair, and their lips met in a hungry kiss. It had been too long since they had been able to enjoy one another, Kurama decided. Their time together since the last tournament had been little more than stolen moments, quick bursts of passion and lust to keep them going until the next time they met. Now, though, they could enjoy each other.
Hiei nipped his bottom lip, and was pleased when the fox opened his mouth obediently. His tongue invaded the slick warmth of his lover's mouth. Kurama tasted of cinnamon and vanilla, with a tinge of bitterness beneath it. His fingers flexed on the slim hips of his sometimes lover. He didn't notice the dismay hidden in those emerald depths as he thoroughly claimed the tempting mouth that belonged to him, and him alone.
Kurama's eyebrows furrowed as he pulled back, but Hiei was too keyed up on lust to notice his confusion. Hiei had been an excellent lover from the start, but a horrible kisser. Demons generally didn't join for love, but for lust and dominance. Demons tended to be ruled by emotion, or by the lack of it. Kurama enjoyed kissing, and had enjoyed teaching Hiei to use lips, teeth, and tongue to excite him before the sex even started. Somehow, in their time apart, Hiei's skill had grown exponentially. When they had made this arrangement between them, Kurama had thought it was only fair that Hiei be allowed to have a lover in Makai if he so wished. Until now, however, he hadn't had any reason to suspect Hiei had found someone else. He had remained faithful to the little fire demon, and was surprised to find that he ached at the thought of the demon in a stranger's bed, despite the fact the proposal had been his idea.
Kurama swept the thought from his mind. Hiei was wary of commitment, of being tied to one person. He was afraid of having that weakness, and it was natural for one to have many lusts as they grew in power. Hiei would have needed to let off some steam every once in awhile. What better way than through sex? That was why Kurama had allowed him to take other lovers if he wished, with the understanding that Hiei was not to sire any children in his escapades. It made Hiei more comfortable with the fact that he was unwittingly becoming more emotionally attached to the fox.
They relieved themselves of the rest of their clothes quickly, each as eager as the other to be joined again in the same carnal dance that always drew them back together. Hiei settled between the red-head's splayed thighs as they tumbled in to bed. As always, the fox's presence was overwhelming. He was drawn to Kurama like he had been with no one else. No one could inspire such passion in him. He had attempted to duplicate the results with many partners, but it took him a long time to become aroused with anyone else. With Kurama, the sight of so much creamy flesh bared to him was enough. Kurama had slipped in to his emotions in a way that both frightened and stimulated the fire demon. He had hardened his heart long ago to the thought that he could ever be worthy of finding love, but Kurama's embrace always gave him hope. With the fox, he felt safe. Protected. Wanted. It scared him, just as much as it ignited his desire for the other man.
It made him want to claim the fox for his own, but that thought was too much to handle. With the upcoming tournament and the shifting of power in Makai, it was also too risky. To have a mated pair in the tournament would be tricky, especially if anyone found out about his affections. He was Mukuro's most trusted adviser, and he had little doubts that she would win this upcoming tournament, especially with the knowledge that Yusuke had declined to participate as more than a commentator. It was too dangerous for both of them to be bound by anything more than a mutual desire.
"Hiei."
His name, falling from those lips, drew him out of his thoughts. The concerned look the fox gave him told him that he had been lost in thought for several minutes, and not paying attention to the amorous body beneath him. That was something he would have to rectify. His lips claimed the sensitized ones beneath him, and he plundered the red-head's mouth until a whimper of desire poured from Kurama and was swallowed up by Hiei's greedy lips. He pulled back with a satisfied smirk and stroked one thumb along the fox's creamy cheek. He would never call Kurama beautiful, not to his face. Kurama hated to be thought of as feminine or pretty. He was masculine, and too often those seeking his attention forgot that. His lips drifted down, and he used one finger to lift the fox's chin and allow him access to Kurama's throat.
Kurama gasped as sharp teeth nibbled gently on his throat. He attempted to lift his head, to draw Hiei back from from his most sensitive and vulnerable area, but found himself pinned to the mattress by a skilled hand at his trachea. Hiei's venture continued downward, and he bit down hard on the juncture of Kurama's neck and shoulder, delighting in the impassioned cry it tore from the red-head's lips.
Kurama shuddered beneath the solid body above him. The hand at his throat caused an element of danger that stirred the demon inside him awake. With very little force, Hiei could crush his windpipe. That adrenaline spike fueled his lust that much more, and the sharp feel of Hiei's teeth sinking in to his flesh cemented that. Yoko began to stir even more, scratching at the inside of his skull, and roaring to meet the formidable opponent in a battle of lust and dominance. It took all of his concentration to lock the demon inside back behind the carefully erected walls of his inner mind. He wouldn't allow anything to ruin this joining.
Above him, Hiei attacked a nipple as Kurama's hips rolled up to grind his arousal against the hot flesh of the fire demon. The calloused fingers slid down his body, grabbing his hips and pinning those to the bed. Kurama's lips curved in to a smile. Hiei was taking it slow, making sure they both remembered that this night was more than just a stolen tryst between lovers. This was their joining, their reunion. For a month, Hiei would be his, and it seemed the fire demon intended to enjoy it just as much as he did.
Hiei growled and sucked the nipple in to his mouth, drawing the fox out of his thoughts and focusing his attention. He would not allow Kurama to be distracted from the chemistry building between them. Kurama's back bowed in a graceful arc, pushing more of his flesh in to Hiei's mouth. Hiei dragged his tongue over the hard nub, and was rewarded with a breathy moan. The fire demon drew his tongue down, creating a slick trail down to his true goal, the proud length weeping between the fox's legs. Kurama shifted, attempting to grind himself in to Hiei, but the firm grip on his hips kept him from moving far.
The fire demon was proud of how passionate he could make the normally level-headed Kurama, of how much he could shake up the calm reserve in which he held himself. His lips suckled the tip of his lover's length, and he had to flex his arms, and his strength, to keep the slim hips pinned to the bed. Kurama's red hair splayed across the pillow as he writhed at the slow torture.
Hiei licked from base to tip, and Kurama had to restrain a rather embarrassing cry of pleasure and frustration that escaped him as a whimper instead. He leaned up to watch his lovely fire demon between his legs, and saw Hiei's lips move. It took him a few moments for his mind to process the simple word, and his face flushed at Hiei's knowing smirk. Only the fire demon could cause him to lose his senses in such a way, to lose himself so completely in passion. He had many lovers in his past as Yoko, but few that captured his interest this way, and none that he allowed so much domination over his body. And, he admitted only to himself, his heart.
"Kurama." Hiei bit the fox's inner thigh none too gently, pleased with the gasp that emitted from his lover's swollen lips. "I need the oil, unless you had plans to go without tonight. While I would hardly mind, I do think you would have difficulty doing your morning training with such soreness."
The smaller demon reveled in the flush he brought to the fox's face at the idea of being so ravaged that his demonic healing would not allow him to be comfortable even hours after their joining was completed. He wasn't disappointed when one of the vines that now covered the majority of the walls obediently went to Hiei's hand. At Kurama's will, the vine flowered, and a generous amount of oil was deposited in to his hand from the center of the flower.
The scent was one of Kurama's favorites, and he had once likened it to the human sandalwood. Besides, this oil was natural, and didn't irritate Kurama like the man-made ones they had tried in the past. The red-head's immune system was surprisingly fast to respond to any substances they thought were not natural, and thus the man-made lubricants had dried out far too fast. This would last as long as they would, and Hiei would not have to reapply as long as Kurama didn't bathe between now and when they finally passed out from exhaustion.
Hiei suckled the weeping length in front of his face as he slid two slick fingers back to Kurama's hidden entrance, glad the fox had thought to prop a pillow under his hips while Hiei had gotten the oil from the plant. The first finger slid in with no resistance as he lavished the length with licks. It was enough to keep Kurama's body very interested, but not enough to bring him any closer to completion. Just when Kurama was beginning to thrust up further in to Hiei's mouth, the fire demon drew back and peppered those creamy thighs with attention instead.
It was enough to make any lover frustrated, and after so long apart, Kurama found the extra attention just as aggravating as it was arousing. He was impatient to feel Hiei inside him, to be joined with the fire demon in a carnal dance of flesh and pleasure, but Hiei was taking his time. While the shorter demon had always been a considerate lover, their couplings had been rough and passionate, not slow and deliberate. They had always lost themselves in a haze of pleasure that usually resulted in love bites, bruises, and scratches. Never had Hiei been this agonizingly slow. Kurama hadn't pegged him as a tease.
"Hiei, I swear that if you do not do something, I will throw you on this bed and take my pleasure instead," Kurama warned.
Hiei snickered, but added a second finger, then a third. The digits curled inside his lover, and he smirked as a cry of pleasure filled the room. "I don't think so, fox." His fingers rubbed the nodule of flesh again, eliciting another rendition of his name. "We both know who is in charge here, and it's not you." Not this time, at least.
Kurama's breathed a sigh of relief as the fingers left him, even as the ache of emptiness filled him. Hiei slid his hands over his own length, coating the neglected shaft in the remainder of the oil from the vines. As Kurama's passion grew, the vines grew. Only small slivers of the white paint could be seen beneath the vines that crawled over the walls and were steadily taking over the ceiling. The hardness of his lover's length pressed against him. Slowly, until the fox was panting with unbridled need, the pressure built as Hiei pressed just barely inside him, and then withdrew. His passage spasmed in time with his lover's teasing, until Kurama felt like he really was losing his mind.
His mouth opened to let his firefly know he was about ready to lose his patience, when Hiei roughly shoved the entire length inside him. A deep cry of pleasure tore from his throat instead, and Kurama rocked his hips to take the last remaining inch inside him. They had coupled many times in the past, but never before had Kurama felt like he was losing himself to the other man. He had become more emotionally invested, certainly, but he had always held back a shred of himself, always fought against himself when his heart demanded that he give all of himself to the other demon. He had never bared his throat in the moment of their joining, never offered to let Hiei claim his as a bond mate. And he was determined that he never would. The urge to do so, now though, was nearly impossible. Even Yoko agreed that Hiei would be an excellent match.
Hiei set a brutal pace that caused the bed to jostle beneath them with each powerful thrust. Each flex of his hips had Kurama choking out his pleasure. Nails dug in to Hiei's shoulders, and red hot lines burned down his flesh where the fox scratched him. It only inspired him to pound in to the tight body beneath him with that much more fervor. A creamy thigh wrapped around Hiei's middle as he found the correct angle that caused him to brush against the red-head's prostate with each thrust. He grunted with pleasure of his own as the passage squeezed him every time that nodule of flesh was stimulated.
They met each other thrust for thrust, locked in a sensual rhythm that only the two of them could accomplish with the other. The passion built with each thrust. Nails dug in to flesh as Hiei bruised the delicate flesh beneath him to keep the body from writhing in pleasure. Lips met as blood flowed between them from the usual love bites and scratches. Their joining was always a thing of undeniable pleasure, and they were both lost in one another's arms. Ruby and emerald gazes locked and held as they reached completion simultaneously, lips choking out the other's name.
For a long moment, Hiei held himself inside his lover. His arms shook with the force of his orgasm, and he felt the passage continue to spasm around his length, milking one last weak spurt of seed from his spent length. His blood dripped down his back in small rivulets. His body would heal the minor injuries within a matter of minutes. Kurama's milky complexion was flushed with color as his body shudder with the after-shocks of such an intense release. His cheeks were flushed pink, and his thighs shook with the effort of holding the grip on Hiei, and thus trapping his lover inside of him.
A calloused hand ran over his thigh, making Kurama's sensitized flesh sing with the touch. His legs parted at the silent request, and Hiei slid out of him with a wet sound. A thin trickle of seed spilled out of the fox and stained the sheets. He had anticipated the need to wash them anyway, and couldn't bring himself to move. Hiei collapsed beside him, and they both stared at the ceiling for several long minutes. The silence as they caught their breath and came down from the post-coital high was not uncomfortable. It was the easy silence that so often lingered between them, the silent understanding.
Hiei rose first and went in to the restroom. The sound of running water finally drew Kurama out of the bed. He winced as he stood and stretched. The soreness would be dissipated by morning, and the discomfort was mild. He had endured worse. He made his way to the bathroom as well, unsurprised to see Hiei add a healthy dose of his lavender and vanilla bath oils to the hot water filling the large bathtub.
"No round two tonight, Firefly?" Kurama questioned as he gathered towels for them.
Hiei shook his head. "No. I have been on patrol duty all day, and you're exhausted."
Kurama smiled softly. The small demon was much more attentive than most gave him credit for. He was exhausted. The day had been long and trying, for both of them. He had gone to his usual university classes, and his distraction at Hiei coming back today had caused him to make a rather large error in chemistry. An error that caused the entire building to be evacuated, to be exact. He had then spent the afternoon in self-administered punishment, cleaning up the mess he had made in the lab and cursing himself for his distraction.
On Fridays, he had only two morning classes, the last being chemistry, and it had been late afternoon before he had been done cleaning up his mess and ensuring the professor was wiling to let them repeat the assignment the next class. He had been grateful that cleaning had been enough to mollify the usually rather cranky professor. Once he left class, he had promptly gone to work.
Since the barrier between the worlds had been removed, more and more demons were migrating to Ningenkai to start a new life. As such, Koenma had erected a sort of immigration office, headed by Kurama. Yusuke, Keiko, Kuwabara, Yukina, and even Boton often volunteered their time to help him with the massive amount of volume. Demons came to the office seeking permission to stay in the Ningenkai permanently. It gave Koenma a way to track which demons were permanently migrating, and it prevented any criminals from attempting to escape Makai and enter the Ningenkai to avoid punishment. Aside from that, it also allowed Kurama to enforce certain rules, like not eating the native human population. The demons who came to him found that it also helped them blend in, and avoid detection.
It was fulfilling, and it gave Kurama a purpose. It allowed him to be both a human, and a demon. It appealed to his divided nature, and even more divided lifestyle. After the last tournament, he had been approached in the human world, on the streets, far too often. Now, everything was organized and controlled. Koenma had three ogres at the office dedicated to the post permanently, but they all respected Kurama and his control over everything. It was, after all, control sanctioned by Koenma himself.
After the long day of work, he had gone to the library to study, and ran in to the drunkards now passed out in his living room. Keiko would have been furious if he went to her in such a state, and Yusuke's mother had taken off again with one of her mafia lovers, no doubt indulging in as much debauchery as she could manage in a short period of time. And Kuwabara would have been beaten senseless by his sister. It was affection for his friends that had caused him to gather them up and bring them home, despite his apprehension in how Hiei would handle the intrusion.
"I am exhausted," Kurama finally admitted as Hiei turned off the tap. "My position as liaison between Ningenkai and visiting demons can be very trying at times. It is surprising how many of the weaker demons are migrating to the Ningenkai as the tournament draws near."
"Hn." Hiei snorted and climbed in to the steaming water. He was a fire demon. Though the water was near scalding, it barely felt warm to him. "That's because of the power shift. They don't know if they're going to end up with a tyrant as a leader. Weaker demons have been used for food in the past for rulers on a rampage."
Kurama dipped a finger in the water, and winced. "The water is too hot, Firefly."
The fire demon could heat the water with barely a flare of youki. It took more concentration to draw warmth in to himself. With his heritage, it was a little known fact that he could either suck the warmth away from the environment around him to fuel his flames, or create warmth. Kurama swirled his fingers in the water, and nodded when it was at the right temperature.
Kurama climbed in to the tub, his skin turning a lovely shade of pink from the heat of the water. Hiei spread his legs, and Kurama settled between them, his back pressed against Hiei's chest. Red hair draped over Hiei's arm, and he slid his fingers through the red locks. A surge of emotions swirled through him as Kurama sighed in bliss and leaned further against him, baring his throat in a sign of trust. Confusion at why he was so drawn to the fox, fear of how the other demon could hurt him and use him, affection, and frustration at himself swirled in Hiei's mind. There was far more than sex between them, but when they started this, both had agreed that the sexual aspect of their relationship was apart from their friendship.
Emerald eyes slid shut as he allowed Hiei to stroke his hair. They lounged in the warm water together. The fire demon prevented the water from cooling, and the steam that filled the room made it seem as if there were no world outside of this embrace. Kurama just enjoyed the feel of the strong arm around his waist, and the fingers smoothing out the snags in his hair. It had been a long time since he had allowed himself to feel such trust for another creature.
"At dawn, let's go to the forest and spar," Kurama murmured and felt Hiei nod in acceptance of the challenge. The fire demon rested his chin on the top of the red locks, and let his mind lull and his muscles relax for the first time in a long time.
It wasn't until Kurama's fingertips began to wrinkle that they washed and got out of the tub. Kurama drained the water, and they dried off without any ceremony. They didn't bother with clothing. The vines had subdued themselves now that the air wasn't permeated with passion, sex, and power but they would still keep any intruders from entering Kurama's bedroom. They didn't feel the need to sleep in one another's arms. Kurama always got too warm if he attempted to curl in Hiei's embrace while he slept. Hiei always had to sleep in a position that allowed him to reach his sword within seconds. He also couldn't sleep with his back to the window or the door, even knowing that there was no danger here. It was a habit he couldn't break even if he tried.

Dawn came too swiftly, but waking up with the sun was also a habit Hiei couldn't break. He was not surprised to find himself alone in bed. The window was open, and the fire demon smiled to himself as he stirred. The vine still guarded the door, and the snoring from the other side ensured that the two idiots would be asleep for several more hours. It was plenty of time to spar. He dressed quickly and grabbed his sword.
Kurama was not difficult to find. The clearing was directly in the center of the forest. Hiei immediately knew that this was a place that no wandering human could venture in to. The feeling surrounding it was ominous, a clever barrier that the fox had constructed. It would invoke an uneasiness in any creature who dared approach this sacred spot. Few would be foolish to tread onwards, and the fire demon had no doubt that there were several harmless traps set to scare of wandering humans, and more dangerous ones that reacted to the strength of a demon's youki.
"You may approach." Kurama's voice carried around the forest to the ears he wished to reach. "The plants will not harm you. I have instructed the ones guarding the border to allow you passage through. They will not allow you out until our fight has concluded, and they will allow no others in."
While such a statement may have been trickery if the fox was against a true enemy, Hiei had no doubts it was true. No plant would dare defy Kurama. He leapt in to the clearing, and felt the barrier seal behind him. Unless Kurama were killed or willed it otherwise, the barrier would remain in place, sealing the two of them in, and everyone else out. Hiei smirked, and unsheathed his sword.
Kurama's smile was gentle, but it lasted only for a brief moment. His affection for the fire demon would not make a difference in battle. He would only hold back enough to prevent fatal injury, and Hiei would do the same. There was little room in their world for mercy, and it would be taken as an insult between them if their affair prevented them from fighting seriously.
It was fall, and the leaves crunched beneath Hiei's feet as he stepped forward to meet the challenge, throwing his sheath and cloak to safety. Leaves swirled around Kurama in a whirlwind, faster and faster until the force of it was nearly strong enough to push Hiei back. He spread his feet, strengthening his footing and flaring his youki. Like a switch had been thrown, the leaves paused mid-motion, frozen in the air between them.
Hiei recognized the attack immediately, and prepared for the onslaught of the razor sharp leaves. Kurama could turn almost anything here in to a weapon. The leave flew at him in a flurry of motion at one flex of Kurama's will. The majority of them burned before they even got close, but a few slipped through. A thin line welled across Hiei's cheek, and blood spilled from the cut. Another strategic cut was placed to the back of his hand, making the tight grip on his sword near painful. Another nearly hit his throat before his sword raised to shear it in half, and it fluttered to the ground, harmless once again.
In the meantime, Kurama had moved in a burst of speed, drawing the rose whip from his hair. In normal circumstances, Hiei's speed was his greatest advantage. He had to find a way to slow the fire demon down. The last of the leaves fluttered to the ground, and Hiei rushed him. Kurama was pleased to see that the leaves had done their job better than he thought they would. Hiei was scratched up fairly well, and angry that Kurama had gotten that first attack in. The cut on Hiei's hand was deeper than all the others, and the blood made Hiei's grip on his sword slick.
It meant Hiei would have less control over the blade, and that was an opening that Kurama would need if he expected to best the fire demon. But first, he had to slow down the speedy demon. Hiei tended to flit from tree to ground and up again, but the lack of trees in the clearing and the carefully erected barrier took that advantage away from his lover. Kurama flared his youki, and the grass began to grow. The growth was slow enough that Hiei wouldn't notice it.
Kurama jumped back as the blade attempted to slice a line through his side and his whip lashed a line across Hiei's arm as the fire demon attempted to adjust his slipping grip. Hiei grunted, but it was more out of frustration that he was being bested than any pain. Kurama smiled. This was unlike Hiei. He was attempting to lull Kurama in to a false sense of security by allowing the fox to win thus far.
It was a tactic Kurama recognized very well, as it was one he himself had used several times. Kurama waited, bracing himself for the next attack. He blinked, and suddenly Hiei was there. A gasp emitted from the red-head. Hiei had gotten faster, and had been holding back his speed. Kurama dodged a series of slices that would have diced him to pieces if he had been less aware of Hiei's style and his normal attacks. What he didn't expect, however, was the fist in his stomach.
The air whooshed out him at the impact, and he felt the crack of at least two ribs. He barely managed to avoid the next blow, and leaped out of range. The grass was growing at an alarming rate now, and wrapped around Hiei's ankles. He moved too fast for it to keep a firm grip and completely halt the fire demon's progress, but the fox was pleased to see that it did slow him down.
"Now, now, darling," Kurama admonished as Hiei attempted to burn the grass rather than continue to fight against it. "Like most of my plants, it feeds of youki. The more you use your flames to burn it, the stronger it gets. The more you resist, the more likely it is to overpower you."
The fire demon barely managed to resist rolling his eyes. The fox was so predictable sometimes, and he was growing weary of the long distance battle. In the forest, surrounded by earth and plant life, Kurama was at an unfair advantage. It was Hiei's own fault for failing to negotiate the battlefield, but he had been too impatient to care. Of course Kurama would win when surrounded by such things. But it didn't speak to who was the strongest. A smirk curved his lips. "While this is a clever trick, you do have an unfair advantage. Besides, this doesn't make you the strongest of us. Just the most resourceful." He motioned to the grass steadily climbing up his ankles and on to his legs.
"This is true. Are you proposing a hand-to-hand battle between us? You would have no sword, and I would refrain from using my plants. It would be a will of physical strength. There, I'm afraid you have an unfair advantage, lover." A red eyebrow rose.
"So battle me hand-to-hand as Yoko." Hiei shrugged. "I'd prefer to battle someone my equal anyway."
"And what is that supposed to mean?" Emerald eyes flashed gold for a split second, and Hiei had to hide his triumph at causing the fox's temper to flare. "Are you stating that I'm weak in this form?"
"Yes." Hiei cocked his head to the side. "Physically."
"As you wish then." Kurama snapped his fingers, and the grass instantly became harmless.
Hiei watched the transformation with the same interest he always had, and his body stirred with lust at the sight. Red hair bled to white within seconds, and green eyes turned to gold. Kurama grew taller within moments and his hair and nails lengthened until the impressive Yoko Kurama stood before him in all his former glory.
There was no denying that Yoko was a formidable opponent. "So, my counterpart agreed to battle without the use of plants and has thus handicapped me of my greatest strength." The deep voice rumbled through the clearing with a whisper of power that had been thousands of years in the making.
It caused Hiei's loins to stir, and his knees to feel weak. Like everyone else, he assumed that Kurama's human and demon sides were perfectly merged, like two halves of one whole. The comment confused him, but he pushed it out of his mind as the threw his sword to the side.
They met with a clash of limbs, and the battle was so evenly matched that one couldn't tell who had the upper hand on the other. Each dodged and parried the other attacks with a grace that spoke of many battles between them. Claws dug in to Hiei's chest as he managed to land a punch on Yoko's side. The punch was little more than a love tap to Yoko, and the scratches didn't slow Hiei one bit, though he was briefly annoyed at the prospect of having another shirt ruined by the fox.
"How can you tell who's winning?" Kuwabara whispered fiercely to his best friend as they crouched in the bushes and watched the mounting battle.
The plants wouldn't allow them to enter the clearing, but neither of them wanted to be seen anyways. The barrier still allowed them to see everything going on, and the fight was impressive. True to his word, Kurama wasn't using any of his plants, and Hiei wasn't using any of his fire. Yusuke frowned. A battle like this could last for days, as the two of them weren't using any energy on their signature attacks. They were so evenly matched that even Yusuke had a hard time telling how this was going to turn out.
"I wish Yoko would stop showing off and get it over with," Yusuke murmured, as his eyes caught an opening that the fox failed to take advantage of. "He's playing with Hiei."
"But Hiei's so fast!" Kuwabara gaped. "How can Kurama keep up with him?"
"Yoko has had thousands of years of practice. His body remembers everything, and I'm sure this isn't the first time he's gone up against someone of Hiei's caliber." Yusuke shrugged. "Just watch. It's going to be over soon."
Sure enough, Kurama sidestepped a flurry of punches, and placed a strategic kick to the back of Hiei's knee. It was enough to cause Hiei to stumble, and as soon as the fire demon turned around, a hand was around his throat, and sharp nails dug in to his jugular. Kurama placed a foot behind Hiei's and applied pressure. When Hiei attempted to draw back, he essentially tripped himself and the fox overpowered him, forcing him to the ground with the hand pressing in to his throat.
"Surrender." Yoko commanded. His golden eyes glinted with the triumph of overcoming the formidable opponent. Hiei was stronger and faster than he was. The only thing that Yoko had in his favor was his patience, and his experience. It was that experience that had caused his victory. Hiei turned his face to the side, thus exposing his throat in a sign of surrender.
Yusuke grasped his friend's arm. "Come on, let's go back. Kurama will be pissed if he finds out we were spying, and I don't want to miss out on him making breakfast." Kuwabara agreed. The former spirit detective didn't bother to tell his friend that the real reason for them leaving had more to do with the bloodlust that usually came to the surface after a fight. The sex after a fight was great, and after the smell of sex and sweat permeating the apartment when he woke, he had little doubt of how the two demons in the clearing would work off the remaining adrenaline from the battle. It was a private moment, and he didn't want to witness it.
Yoko stood up and raised his face to the wind, letting the cool fall breeze tangle his silver locks. It had been too long since he had been allowed to emerge from the prison that his other half had trapped him in. The human soul he shared a body with was more impressive than he had thought. When Shuichi had been a child, there had been no barrier between them, and they had shared their thoughts freely. Since meeting Hiei, though, Shuichi had been limiting him more and more, and thus limiting his ability to protect both of him. The thought troubled him, but he understood Shuichi's reasons. Still, their problems were their own, and admitting them to the fire demon was the worst thing to do. He feared what would happen if others knew of this predicament.
Yoko removed the barrier so Hiei could leave at his leisure, not that he thought the fire demon would. There had been many trysts between them that Shuichi was not privy to. He had come to expect what would pass between them now, but Hiei needed to reign back in his power, and Yoko needed to feed his darlings. The plants sucked up the excess youki he had built during the battle. They were greedy for their true master's touch, and it was a treat he was not often able to give them. They thrived on demon energy, and Shuichi was too human to sustain them indefinitely.
As soon as he finished feeding the plants, he turned his attention back to the fire demon. "Will you submit to me?" Yoko questioned. He knew the answer, but it didn't stop him from asking. He had to make sure Hiei's consent was always clear, in case the other half of him ever managed to stumble upon the memory. It was a far-fetched chance, but a chance all the same.
"Yes." Hiei's voice was rough with need. The demon was already naked, and Yoko relieved himself of his clothing as he made his way through the clearing to the kneeling demon.
Hiei was incredibly arousing. The fierce demon bowed to no one, and submitted to few. To know that he was the only one who the fire demon had submitted in this way was a powerful aphrodisiac. No other would see Hiei kneel before them. Only his golden eyes had the privilege of watching his Dragon suck his engorged member completely in his mouth. Yoko's claws scratched along Hiei's scalp, and he felt the hum of approval all the way up his member. Yoko never made much noise as a lover, but a flex of his hips was reward enough for Hiei.
"Enough."
Yoko's voice was commanding, and Hiei promptly released the member from his mouth and turned. He bared himself on his hands and knees. This carnal dance was familiar, and it sent a thrill of excitement down Hiei's spine to submit so completely. Their joining after battle was usually fast and hard, the perfect release. So, when Hiei felt a slick tongue lick him from balls to entrance, it caused him enough surprise to make him jolt forward. Yoko's tongue circled the tight ring of muscles.
While his counterpart had no doubts that Hiei had slept with other demons, Yoko had no doubts that no one had dominated the little fireball during their time apart. The portal was tight and unused. His tongue slid inside the twitching ring of muscle, and Hiei gasped his appreciation, lowering his head to his arms, and thrusting his backside further towards Yoko.
Within minutes, the skilled tongue had Hiei panting. There was no one else he trusted to top him, and submitting to a weaker creature was beyond his understanding. Even submitting to Kurama's human form seemed wrong, somehow. Yoko withdrew his tongue as the ring of muscle relaxed around the intrusion, and replaced it with two split-slick fingers. The grass beneath Hiei's hands sizzled as he dug his fingers in to the dirt. The claws retracted at Yoko's will to avoid tearing his lover, and he relished the cries of pleasure as he stimulated the smaller demon's prostate.
They were both impatient, and a whispered plea was all it took for Yoko's patience to reach it's end. He was just as disturbed as the rest of him at the fact that the fire demon had so much hold over him. The chemistry between them had ignited a spark that Yoko thought died with the only other demon he had ever loved. He wanted to protect the smaller demon, claim him so that no other would dare lay a hand on the flesh. He would kill if needed to keep the younger demon at his side, but he resisted the pull to lay his teeth in to the flesh beneath him.
Instead, Yoko allowed his hands to brand the flesh beneath him as he forced his length in to the passage. It took only a few thrusts to seat himself completely in the constricting warmth of the fire demon, and he allowed a moment for the body beneath him to adjust. He was not usually a considerate lover, and he was more than willing to admit it. He took pleasure from those who offered it, and didn't often bother with gentleness when he knew his partner had only offered their body for a chance to use it over him. Hiei shifted back when he was ready, and it was all the signal Yoko needed.
The thrusts were less forceful than Yoko would have liked, but they accomplished the goal of making the fire demon writhe in pleasure. Without the aid of lubricant, Yoko had to restrain himself. The end came too fast for both of them. Hiei spilled his seed in to the grass below with a shudder, and the twitching passage clamping down around Yoko milked every last drop of his release. He licked a trail down Hiei's spine as he pulled out, and allowed them both the necessary time to recover. After all, there was time for round two before he was locked back in his cage. He licked his lips at the thought.
