There were a few rolling stomachs, a couple of sharp headaches. Then there were fewer that felt like moving would be torture enough.
Sha sat at the dining table with Hyouga, Salem, Kitsu, and Hiei. Each were attempting to fight off a variety of those three with a cup of coffee.
“Alcohol is the devil,” Kitsu muttered around her cup. A few grunts agreed with her.
The others had left in the middle of the night, and Sukuna and Yusuke were still passed out.
A sharp knock sounded from the front door, forcing Hyouga and Kitsu’s ears to flinch at the sound. Kitsu flattened hers to her head with her hands. “Tell Satan not today.”
Salem slipped off his chair and dragged his feet to the door. He opened it onto Kurama, who was about to knock again. “I see you all had fun last night,” Kurama said with a smile.
Salem grunted but noticed something in his hands. “What’s in the envelope?”
“Yusuke had sent me to see Enki. Wanted to speak with the girls himself. I needed to speak with him about something anyway. While I was there, he gave me a bit more information.”
He stepped aside to let him in. “We’ll see how much we can comprehend. Hold on, I’ll get the stragglers. Everyone else is in the kitchen.”
Kurama watched him disappear right down the hall in front of the door to retrieve Yusuke. Once out of sight he entered the kitchen, seeing them all taking advantage of the kitchen’s heavy blinds. “You all look well.”
Kitsu rolled her eyes. “You’re hilarious.”
“I try.” He put the file in front of Sha as Sukuna came into the kitchen, shortly followed by Salem and Yusuke. “There’s been a lead that needs further investigation. A surveying team found a strange energy flux nearby. They came across a cave system. They gave regular reports as they traveled down the tunnels. Suddenly the reports cut short.”
“Hope he doesn’t mind if we wait a few hours,” Sha said. Her communicator buzzed and she growled at it before turning it on. “What’s your verdict?”
“Not my choice to party while on the case. However, I would still like you to wait for Hyouga’s contacts to see if we can get overlapping information.”
Hyouga nodded. “Still have a few more hours before we’re in the expected amount of time anyway. Shouldn’t take too long for each of us to recover.”
“Or at least be well enough to ignore it.”
“Do whatever it takes to rest up. Hyouga, the moment we can overlap anything, we move out.”
Hyouga nodded. “Understood.”
“I’ll keep looking at what I can in recent records.”
Sha kept sipping at her coffee as she nodded. “Keep us informed of anything.” She cut the communications and put it back in her pocket. “You heard the orders. Back to bed for now.” She stretched, and Salem’s eyes caught sight of something odd. He then almost choked on his coffee. His eyes went to Hiei, and sure enough, fresh wounds could be sensed under his jacket, if one focused their sense of smell through their hangover fogs.
He cracked a grin as the girls left to their chosen rooms, some taking aspirin with them, and all of them hauling a glass of water. “So Yusuke, what did you think of last night?”
Kurama perked up. “Yes, how was your welcoming party?”
“Went off great. Think the guys really dig them. Weird that Sha eventually wandered off. Saw her stumble though.”
“Don’t think she was the only one to vanish.” His eyes rested on his shorter friend as his eyes were closed and covered from a sharp headache that was slowly fading away. “Someone was especially quiet last night.”
Yusuke put a hand to his chin in thought. His eyes lit up. “Oh yeah, now that you mention it.”
“I hate social gatherings, you know this,” Hiei said, knowing eyes were on him. “I took her leaving as a sign we were free.”
“So you just went upstairs?”
Salem tried to signal Yusuke, who was sitting opposite side of Hiei. He minutely shook his head and pointed to his nose. However, Yusuke only looked at him oddly. Salem puffed up his chest while still pointing to his nose.
Kurama got the signal though, and sniffed the air. He smirked. “Did you cut yourself on the way upstairs? I smell a fresh wound.”
“It’s nothing.”
Salem smirked as well. He had pinpointed the source of the smell by now. He raised his arm. “Nothing he’d want us to worry about, right?” He nudged Hiei’s arm, forcing him to wince. “Ha, I knew it!”
“What the hell was that for?”
“You didn’t have that jacket on last night and we didn’t see any wounds on you. Now first thing in the morning you do?”
“Back off, Salem.”
“Alright, alright.” He tipped his coffee cup back as the others sniggered. “Anyone else notice Sha’s arm earlier? Looks like something bit her.”
Yusuke snorted into his cup.
“I am curious as well,” Kurama said with his tone full of amusement. He kept his attention to the file in front of him.
Salem eyed his shorter friend, seeing his gaze grow annoyed behind his cup. He saw his jacket sleeve fall just enough. “Hey Kurama, can I see that file?” He caught it as it was slid down to him. He opened it to look over the files, holding them off to the side so only he could see it. He only half took in the information.
“What does it say?” Hiei asked.
Salem waited for him to place the empty cup out of the way before closing the file. “It says…” He quickly turned around and grabbed Hiei’s sleeve, pulling it down, “that you got laid last night.”
He jerked out of his grasp just as quickly. “No such thing happened.”
“Oh, sure. So you ended up just biting hard enough to draw blood for no reason because that’s what you’d just normally do?” He scoffed. “I don’t know how normal that is for you.”
He rolled his eyes. “Nothing happened that you need to know.”
“Meaning something happened,” Yusuke said. “No one’s here to judge you.”
“Hell, it makes sense,” Salem said. “Of course someone like you could handle a dragon’s bloodlust.” He let out an impressed huff. “Granted with her half-blood she’d be a little easier, but still. I’ve heard about some of the encounters with one. Nothing I’d want to indulge after a dry spell.”
Hiei got out of his chair. “Focus on the mission. I’m going back upstairs until we have our other lead.”
He ignored their voices as he retreated down the hall to take the stairs. As he entered his hallway, the door to the bathroom next to him opened. She looked up as he approached. “Decided to retreat as well?”
He nodded as they slowed their steps in front of their doors around the curved hallway. “No point remaining down there for now. Rather stay in a dark room.”
She tilted her head to her door. “That’s what I’ve set up in there.” She couldn’t stop her eyes flicking over him. “About last night…”
“What about it?”
She ran a hand through her hair, letting out a heavy breath. “It’s… been awhile. For me, I mean. I’ve been stressed lately too, so that didn’t help.” She shook her head. “I’m sorry I was too forward with you.”
“I was the one pinning you, amongst other things.” He nodded to her arms. “I drew first blood.”
“I suppose so.”
“Not like it would have meant anything though, as you said.” He caught her charcoal eyes. “Just something we could both be missing out on.”
She didn’t know what he meant at first. Then she remembered most of what she had said and laughed. “Oh damn, I did say that out loud.”
He couldn’t stop a ghost of a smile as she laughed behind her hand. “But now that we’re sober, we’re both thinking clearly. That maybe exploiting pent-up bloodlust isn’t a good idea at the moment.”
“Yes. Not a good idea in the slightest.”
“Just left a shit relationship; you’re on duty. In the middle of a mission.”
“That amount of frustration would be better saved for other things.” She looked up his form again. “I mean, in the way we were thinking, we’d probably go too rough. To where at least one of us would have trouble walking.”
“It wouldn’t be me.”
She arched a brow and crossed her arms. “So sure of yourself.” She tilted her chin up slightly. “You’ve never seen the bloodlust of a dragon.”
“I’m sure I could handle it.” He crossed his arms.
She hummed in amusement. “Sure you could. Whatever you want to believe.” She opened her door. “But finding out would be problematic.”
“Yes.”
“Or…” She paused in her doorway.
“Or?”
She smirked and held on to the door. “Something that we’re both missing out on.” She shrugged. “A strong opponent is hard for me to find. In many versions of the word.”
He felt blood start to rush in his veins, responding to something he thought long-dead. “Not enough to give in to their base instincts. Not enough with drive.”
“Not enough willing to give in to their drives.” She hummed. “But not a good idea.”
His blood burned, and he spoke faster than he thought. “Didn't Koenma just say rest up any way we saw fit?”
She grinned. “There you go.” She tilted her head. “So, my place, or yours?”
