Chapter 11: Secrets Revealed
***
In the end, Kurama had collected six guests for his next trip to Tourin: Yukina and Shiori, Keiko and Shizuru, Genkai and Kuwabara. He could
have done without the latter, but he was leery of guarding so many
non-combatants on his own. There would have been even more, but his stepfather
and stepbrother were “coincidentally” away at a baseball camp. He didn’t want
this to be any more difficult than it had to be; he could see that his mother
was already wondering why they were at a mountain temple and not an airport.
While Genkai and Kuwabara
argued over who should carry the luggage, he drew Shiori
aside.
“Something very
peculiar is going on,” she said.
“Yes, mother.
I’m sorry I haven’t explained it to you, but some of it is frankly
unbelievable, and I thought it would be better for you to see it for yourself.”
“You worry me,
Shuichi. You never tried to conceal your preference for boys, and now to find
you’ve been hiding something bigger … I’m afraid you might be involved in
something you don’t understand.”
That was Shiori Minamino in a nutshell.
She wasn’t offended by his keeping a secret; she didn’t feel betrayed, only
concerned for his welfare and his reasons for keeping silent. “It’s all right,
mother. In fact, my understanding is part of the story. You see, before I was
born to you I lived a much different life, and I remember it in detail.”
“I … see.” She
didn’t really, but he expected that. Genkai and Kuwabara had finished their argument (with the redhead
holding most of the packs), so he let Shiori think
for a bit while he opened the gate. He tore the tab off the spell ticket and
heard her gasp as the portal opened; she looked around wild-eyed as he ushered
her through. “Where are we?”
“This is the Makai.”
“Oh!” She
shrank back. “You mean that you were … no. You are a demon.”
He nodded. He
knew he had to reassure heart this point; good thing he’d rehearsed this
conversation in advance. “I retained both the memories and the powers of my
previous life. Originally I had planned to return to the Makai
when my body became fully demon; that would have been when I was ten years
old.”
She picked up
on the part he hoped she would. “What made you change your mind?”
“I learned to
love you.” He drew her into his arms; the rest of the group was diplomatically
ignoring them, which he was thankful for. He went on, “You are more precious to
me than any gold or jewels could be. I had no wish to leave you … or to see you
hurt.”
“Oh, Shuichi.” She returned his hug; he sagged in relief. No
panic, no rejection – His mother’s strength astonished him sometimes. Shiori pressed a hand to her throat. “This is why you
wanted me to always wear your locket, isn’t it? You put a protective spell on
it.”
“Yes. A demon
as old as I has enemies, and I will not allow them to
touch you.”
“And I suppose
Shuichi isn’t really your name, then.”
“It’s as real
as any I’ve been given. But if you mean my demon name –”
“Hey, Kurama!” Kuwabara
broke in. Urameshi left you a note!”
Shiori giggled. “Kurama?
Treasured Stallion?”
“What can I
say? My demon mother was a down-to-earth lady. And I’m not even a horse demon.”
Perhaps he was laying it on a bit thick, but he had to reinforce in her mind
that he was a demon and he was still her son, and perhaps to
inspire some curiosity about this side of his life. He took the letter from Kuwabara and opened it, inhaling his Toushin’s
scent. He read, “Kurama, can’t wait to have
you again. (He blushed.) I’ve
arranged for some transportation for you. She came in as part of a tribute;
she’s not very bright, but she is friendly. I think you’ll like her. – Yu.” A gift! He looked around and spotted a faint
spark of Yusuke’s ki through a gap in the trees. He
walked over with the rest of the group following him; in a little hollow there
lay something that looked like nothing so much as a pile of giant vines, but it
heaved itself up and turned towards him as he approached.
“Oh!” His
eyes shone as he stepped in to touch it – her. “You are a beauty, aren’t you.” She rustled happily, and wrapped him loosely in her
vines; he fed her some of his youki. “Mother, isn’t
she adorable?”
Shiori stood
watching her son react to the elephant-sized moving vegetable as if it was a
new puppy with unconcealed astonishment. Only a demon could be so delighted
with such a …
life form …, and yet, he showed the same kind heart that she had known all his
(human) life. “Shuichi” was no lie. And to her surprise, she agreed with him.
“She is,” she said. “Er… what is she exactly?”
“A shambling mound – a plant demon. They’re weak as demons
go, but they’re good-tempered and make popular companions.” He didn’t mention
that they were also popular because they were carrion eaters and would happily
clean up other demon’s messes. “I shall call her Audrey.”
Audrey writhed her tentacles with excitement. “Now that’s something
you don’t see every day,” Shizuru said. Yukina squealed with delight and ran up to pet the
monstrous vines. “Hello, Audrey-san. Are you going to help carry us?” Audrey
tickled her with a flower stem.
“How do you
know it’s a girl?” Kuwabara asked. Shizuru smacked him.
“Because she’s got fruits on
her, dummy. You’ve been slacking your biology homework, haven’t you.”
“What are we
standing around gabbling for?” Genkai said. “Let’s
get moving.” With some rummaging they were all settled on Audrey’s back, and Kurama directed her towards Tourin.
They passed the time filling in a fascinated Shiori
on the particulars of demon life: that Kurama was a
fox demon, that he had powers over plants (he grew a rose for her), that he was
actually five hundred years old, that he had been a thief. His mother was
taking this amazingly well, all things considered. She’d already guessed that
Yusuke was also a demon, and so was Yukina; she was
all set to adopt the ice maiden as a daughter. All of the women ended up
trading demon anecdotes, while Kurama and Kuwabara looked out for attackers. But no one was foolish
enough to bother an S-class Youko, and the journey
went on without incident.
When Audrey
shuffled into the Tourin courtyard, Yusuke was
waiting for them. He pounced on Kurama as soon as his
feet hit the ground, tilted his head up and kissed him. Kurama
couldn’t stop a little moan; two weeks, it seemed, was much too long to do
without. He didn’t even care that his mother was watching. Yusuke let him up
and announced, “Welcome to sunny Tourin. It’s not
much of a vacation spot, but we try to keep it homey.”
While he
greeted the others, Kurama turned to Audrey. “That
was well done, my pretty one. Go and find a nest in the garden, I’ll send you
some nice beef bones.” The vine demon rustled away happily, and Kurama went back to join his family.

Hiei skirted the edges of the little group, wincing at the
sound of Kuwabara’s voice. Why did they have to bring
him, anyway? His clumsy attempts at team spirit and courting Yukina would only put a cramp in the mood. Hiei stopped by his sister’s side. “Yukina,
can I talk to you?”
“Certainly, Hiei-san.” They went
over to a nook in the wall and sat down. “Do you have any news about my
brother?” she asked.
“Yes.” He
paused. He could do this; as with Yusuke, he had to believe he had a chance.
The Toushin had given him some advice gleaned from
his misadventures with Keiko: tell her
the truth. Then tell her why you waited so long, or she’ll think you have a
problem with her. Never in a million hells did he want Yukina
to think that. He took her hand and laid first one tear gem, then the other in
it. “The truth is, I am your brother. I never told you
because I didn’t think you’d want to be around a killer like me. You deserve
better. I’m sorry.” He stared at the ground as he spoke. Thus, he was startled
when slim arms squeezed around him. A lot of people were hugging him lately; he
should do something about that. Later. He breathed in
his sister’s scent, his eyes burning. It wasn’t until he heard the clicks on
the floor that he realized he was shedding tears. So was Yukina,
he saw looking up. He caught one pale gold sphere as it fell from her cheek. “My sister.”
“My brother,”
she replied. “I’m so glad it turned out to be you.” She nuzzled the star in his
hair. “Fire and ice, no wonder you’re such a good fighter.”
“You deserve
better.”
“I don’t care
about better. I want my brother.” She rapped him on the head with her knuckles;
it seemed that Yukina, too, had a hint of fiery
nature. She looked at the ground around them and giggled. “It looks like a game
of Go.”
Hiei looked. Crystal
spheres lay scattered around them – some were pale gold and others, which must
be his own, were red-black. “Sister, if anyone ever makes you cry enough to
play Go with, I’ll skin them myself.”
“You’re so
sweet, Nii-chan. We should pick them up before
someone trips.” They filled Yukina’s purse with hiruseki stones. Hiei was mildly
bewildered; he wasn’t used to being this happy, hadn’t even known he was
capable of it. But this was one challenge he wouldn’t mind facing at all. He
offered Yukina his arm, and they walked back to the
group quietly as was their nature. Both of them were smiling.

I don’t own Little Shop of Horrors, either.
No, there will not be any Technicolor Angst-o-rama in this fic. The tissues are

Next chapter: Yusuke rewards Kurama
and Hiei for their courage … if you know what I mean.
