.A/N: I’ll tell you something…this chapter was pulled out through my teeth because while I was writing ‘YOU’ kept not doing what I wanted you to. In the end I gave up and let ‘YOU’ have your way. Don’t worry, all issues brought up here will be answered in time ~_^
.Chapter 12: Alpha to Omega
The two of you sit with your backs pressed to opposite sides of a tree, watching the pack at ease. They aren’t traveling now, mostly enjoying a short rest before taking up the hunt again. The search for food among them is constant. A pack’s bellies are never really full. At least not here in the wild of the human world. You watch the mothers, there are two of them, keeping watchful eyes over the pups, five of those, as they wrestle about in the center of where all the wolves crouch.
A slight shiver of affection rolls through you and your hand rubs absent circles over your belly. It seems every day you grow heavier, and a little rounder, though perhaps you still only look as if you put on a little weight. Of course this may also be the case as you have never lived a life of three full meals a day until now. The whole phenomena is quite amazing to be honest, and you feel your stomach rumbling softy, wanting to be back on that meal plan once more. Of course, carrying pups as you are now, you can certainly appreciate the constant food source.
A rather large, scraggly looking gray wolf crawls into the center of the group, sniffing curiously at the pups, as if perhaps to play with them. He bears scars from claws and teeth, and smells most heavily of pack. A deep cool sadness runs through you as you recognize the Omega of the pack. As if sensing your unease, Hiei turns to you.
"Just watch," you tell him, unable to keep the dismay from your voice. You tell yourself that this is nature, this is necessary, but whatever part of you thinks with compassion and reason wants to reject it most vehemently.
The wolf doesn’t make it but within a few feet of the pups before the mothers leap to their feet, the hair along their spines raising in violent warning. The Omega wolf pauses and cocks his head to the side in contemplation. Is a chance to interact with the unbiased pups, worth the beating he would surely secure at the hands of the pack? One of the mothers, however, isn’t patient enough to wait for his decision. She darts forward, snapping violently at his shoulder, and the Omega, crawls quickly backwards, and away before further damage can be done.
"He is weak," Hiei says after a moment. "He doesn’t even stand up for himself."
"He isn’t weak," you snap, feeling the constricting of your throat as you fight not to tear up. You know this wolf has, and will, face worse.
"Hn…"
"He is the Omega," you continue after a moment. "He takes the force of all the packs stress, so they don’t kill themselves. He is strong if he will suffer that for the good of his pack. And they take care of him, he is always among the first to eat, and was probably once Alpha."
"He allows himself to be a whipping boy for this pack?" Hiei snorts. "That is weakness."
"No, that is Pack. A love of something greater than oneself. It’s community."
"It’s foolish."
"It’s my life, and it will be the lives of our pups."
"No," he hisses. "I’ve seen your pack, and there is no strength in it at all. Kurama is right about that."
Your heart stumbles over a few beats. Kurama did say your pack was weak, you remember his words with a violent sting through your chest. Grinding your teeth to keep from unleashing the string of obscenities you know are floating beneath the surface just dying to burst free, you feel a slight tingle in your gut. It grows, pushing itself outward until the rage bursts over your skin, hotter than any fire, churning and boiling your insides into furnace.
You open your mouth, and the anger just spills out.
"You don’t have any idea how to get along with others do you? No idea how a group can work together as a unit. You can’t even see the silent strength in one wolf who is willing to suffer the aggression of his pack, so that they might keep on living. Can you see anything at all?" You stand and turn to face him. "Maybe those little red eyes of yours are blind! And as for my pack, I don’t care what Kurama says or you think you saw. Keep your opinions to yourself."
You can feel your claws running out; your nails harden and lengthen to sharp points. You want to strike, attack, maybe even kill. It would feel good, the way the death of the deer had felt good. He would be hot, like some exotic spice, deliciously burning across your tongue. You can see the steady pumping of his pulse in his neck. He either has no idea how close to the edge you are, or he simply isn’t afraid.
"I know exactly how a group works," he drawls with his own quiet irritation stirring. "I have to deal with one every time the human world gets sucked into another crisis. We don’t have an Omega."
"What about Kuwabara?"
Hiei snorts. "That idiot doesn’t pull his weight."
"But I bet he takes the worst of the beatings, doesn’t he?" You had smelled it on him when you’d first met. A sense of that he was more than he appeared. He smelled of old injury and heart, the way an Omega would smell.
"That doesn’t mean anything."
"Doesn’t it?" you shout, raking your claws across the tree trunk in frustration leaving four deep rivers, like scars in the wood.
Hiei’s eyes shift to your fully clawed hands, and for a moment you see him actually studying them, as if unsure what to make of this new development. "You don’t even know how to control your own demon rage," he snorts.
And there it is, the straw that broke the metaphorical camel’s back. Well this camel(you) was about to shove the metaphorical hoof down this little fire demon’s throat. You swing, putting all the force you can muster into that one blow, sending the rage out like fire through your arm, blazing in your fist. But what you strike, isn’t Hiei at all, but the tree, which shudders, and cracks slightly under the force. As you stare in silent awe, you drop your hand, feeling your claws slide away, and full on gaping at the scorch-mark left by your fist.
"I did that?" you asked no one in particular.
"No," Hiei answers from beside you. "That was your rage, and now you’ve used it all." You ignore the bite to his words, simply running your gaze over the mess you’ve made of the poor tree.
The wolf pack is all watching you hesitantly, and though you’re sure they would allow you to stay longer, you know that your time among them is at an end for now. Dropping to all fours, you approach the Alphas, giving them your neck, which they acknowledge with their soft nips, before you rise and approach Hiei. You feel drained, and surprisingly lonely in that moment. You asked him to stay, so that he might see the good there was in a pack, but he couldn’t, wouldn’t, do you that small favor.
And something else is bothering you. This rage, ‘demon rage’ Hiei called it, you’ve never experienced anything like it before. What does it mean? Where does it come from? And why now? The only person you can figure will have the answers for you is Genkai. If she doesn’t have the answers, no one will.
Lastly there’s Kurama. You don’t want to be angry at him. Worse than that, he knows you heard him, which may create a gap of awkwardness that you’ll never bridge again. He’s one of the few solid things in your shifting world. You don’t want to lose that. You need to talk to him, to understand, to make things right. As your mulling the situation over, Hiei approaches you, a particularly sour look on his face.
"What’s wrong with you?" you ask him.
His eyes slide to the side suspiciously. "Nothing, woman. Let’s go."
*~*~*~*~*
Genkai is out back tending the garden when you arrive. She looks up as you draw near, but made no exclamations of surprise at your return. She does, however, rise from her ministrations and turn to face you. "Will you be staying at least through dinner?" she asks, and walks into the temple.
Inside, you find her in the living room, seated on the carpet, preparing for meditation. Her eyes follow you as you move to sit down beside her. She takes in everything, the wild, disheveled look of your hair, tangles with twigs and leaves, to the dirt smeared on your face, and the ragged mess you’ve made of your dress. You sit down beside her, and mimic her position.
"Have I offended you, Master Genkai?"
"No," she replies smoothly. "You’re young and flighty. I wasn’t surprised when you left, especially after Kurama told me what you heard." She places her delicate looking hands on her knees and turns her face towards you.
"Yes," you sigh. "I need to talk to him."
"I agree. He seemed almost as distraught as you were. It seems he thinks of you as a sort of…sister." Your cheeks burned slightly with embarrassment and a slight twinge of guilt. You should have known he’d have a reaction, and an unpleasant one at that.
"Master Genkai, I-"
"Have other questions," she finished. "So ask them."
You nod, swallowing the lump of nervousness that has grown in the back of your throat. "Something’s happening to me," you fumble, "and I just get so…angry. It’s never been like this before, Genkai. I-"
"It’s the demon rage," she interjects, to your surprise. "That’s perfectly normal for a young mother. Your hormones are going haywire, unleashing parts of yourself you’ve never confronted. The rage is hard on most demons when they first face it." Genkai turns away from you, and begins muttering a mantra to slip into meditation. After a moment she stops and adds, "We’ll talk about this more later. For now you should get cleaned up."
"Can’t I meditate with you first?"
"I doubt there’s time right now. Your company will be here soon."
"Company?"
Genkai motions to a letter in the table across the room. You go and pick it up, reading it twice before the meaning seeps into your confusion addled brain. Your brother and Rai are coming for a visit.

.A/N: YAY! You are getting a visit! Who knows where this is going? *wink wink*
.I would like to throw this out there…I’ve been reading a lot of webcomics lately, and I’ve got it in my head that it would be cool if some of you maybe wanted to do some fanart for this story? It doesn’t have to be amazing…I’m horrible at drawing myself, but I thought…maybe someone or a few someone’s out there might like to break out the colored pencils, dust off the crayons, or open a Microsoft Paint page and doodle me a little something? I might even be able to work out a little something for the most creative submission? (not the best drawn…the most creative ~_^) I’d host the pictures on the website I share with AoA, credited to you, the artist(with your permission only of course) and I just think it would be super spiffy.
.My e-mail, as always, is olympianoct8@yahoo.com if you’re interested! I’ll be taking them as long as you send them in, and I’ll put a link to the site here…okay, now you’re tired of reading…so I’ll let you go ~_^
