Salem wheeled a white board out of his downstairs office and offered to help with organizing notes on the board as they went through information. All focus was on the case. Nothing veered off track. They each looked at a different page of notes while Salem wrote overlapping facts on the board. At some point he had fetched a map, and they tried to narrow down the clues.
Koenma rang in with his results. “From the map you’ve provided, it seems like there is a cave system that is frequented most often. From what we can tell, it’s been uncharted for centuries. It was closed off due to a cave-in.”
“Centuries means plenty of time to clear it out in private, if you start in a safe place. What if the one who started the dig was affiliated with Earth?” Kitsu said. “They’d be able to slip energy safely through to clear it out.”
“That is a good point,’” Sha said. “And what if it isn’t one person starting this? What if we have multiples in on this?”
“How many dealers did you say were increasing, Hyouga?”
“About six,” she answered. “It’s only out here for now, so no other districts are getting it. The other cities are rumors. Just trails.”
“So Severa is the target?”
Sha nodded. “Along there. There’s a cave system to the east.”
“The east is all coast.”
“That’s what we thought at first.”
Sukuna leaned over the table to get closer. “Yeah, turns out there’s a hilly area a half day out. So I’d say keep constant guard on the Severa portals.”
“I’ll let them know. You know what to do.”
“And if it’s a high priority?” Sha asked.
“You still know what to do.”
She nodded. “Make the call. Got it. We’re ready to head out.”
“I’d say first scout the area above. See if there is some sort of weak link anywhere above there. Report back with what you find. Lay low for now. Just until we know who or what we’re dealing with.”
Yusuke snorted. “Since when are you so cautious?”
“Since one of my detectives went rogue, and another went demon, and what we’ve all been through, I’ve become a lot more cautious. Especially when demons guard us all.”
“And what do we do when we’ve scouted above ground?” Sha asked.
“If you do not engage enemies report back to the home and send your readings to me. If you do engage… make sure they did not report you. You four should be able to map it with Sha overhead, but…” He turned to Yusuke. “If you guys wouldn’t mind helping for old time’s sake.”
Yusuke thumbed his nose and grinned. “I was getting bored waiting around for Enki. Some scout work will get me moving again. Which means I’m putting together the team again, what we have here. With Salem temping as our fourth.”
“Sounds good, Yusuke. Sha, get what you have to.”
She nodded again. “Will do.” She closed the communicator link, but knew he still watched from somewhere above. She let out a heavy breath and smiled. “Well I suppose we at least deserve breakfast before we go. Not it!”
They all caught on one by one. All but one who had never played many games in his life. Nor had he cooked, most likely, so the men offered their assistance while the women changed and grabbed their weapons and gear.
The entire time, Hiei expected one of them to mention something, but nothing came. They each only asked for ingredients they needed to the person closest to the source. They discussed potential strategies with him, and he gave his input. If they weren’t going to say anything, he wasn’t going to. Everything felt normal again.
They managed to make enough for everyone as they came back to the kitchen, weapons in hand, or close-by. No one mentioned a thing besides the mission, and what they were going to do afterward. Hiei vaguely heard Kurama mention something of starting a new garden in Demon World. He did hear Kitsu speak up with interest in starting the same thing.
“What about you, Sha?” Hyouga asked.
“Go back into the rhythm of things. Nothing else waiting for me right now.” She poked at the remainder of her eggs. “Plenty of paperwork, when it’s all done. Plenty of red tape to type through. At least there’s Friday nights, right?”
“Oh, yeah. That. There is that.” She looked around. “Everyone seems done just about. Should we start moving?”
Sha nodded. “Before it gets any later.” She raised her voice slightly. “Hope everyone has what they need. Leave the dishes for when we come back. Something to look forward to.”
“Well, at least scrape them off and take the trash out,” Salem muttered.
“There is that. Scrape them off and last one takes out the trash.”
Salem locked the door behind Yusuke, who hauled the heavy bag over his shoulder towards the disposal. They took a route somewhat mapped out, though they had to make their own way to save time. Sha scouted ahead in the air at times to see if anything would be alerted by forging their own path, but for the longest time, nothing met her eyes. She kept them alerted through signals, flaps against the light along with hand signals just in case either signal failed.
Just as she straightened again, she narrowed her eyes. She pulled back and dived, and her team stopped immediately as she landed. “Clearing up ahead, a few kilometers. Might be wise to travel silent from here on out.”
Salem came forward with a grin. “This is where I can come in handy. I can take out something within three kilometers. It gets weaker the farther the target, but if I can be of any assistance.”
Sha nodded and pointed. “About two that way.”
“Right.” He kneeled in the shadows of the thick tress, and a vague purple hue radiated from him before escaping into the dirt. “One…. One half…. Ah, two.” He kept his head down, but his eyes were open. They couldn’t see much more than that. “Nothing grows here.”
“Has to be from a hidden ley line.” She nodded to Hyouga, who took a sensor from her bag. “Luckily we won’t have to dig to find out. Any enemies up ahead?”
Salem shook his head. “Nothing that I can sense. Should still haul ass though. I’ll keep the sensor up as we go and spread it out.”
“Good call.” They each made their way forward through the forest, using what light penetrated the tall canopies above them. They followed the trail Salem took, using him as a living radar.
They emerged into the clearing, surprised to see the canopy stretch high above to still link their branches together. Hyouga followed the device while the others took in the clearing.
“It’s so still,” Kurama muttered. “Far too still.”
“No wind can penetrate through here,” Kitsu observed, her amber eyes darting about. “Very little light as well. I’m not surprised the trees have overgrown this place. It’s as if it’s keeping the energy contained.”
“Perfect cover,” Sha said. “No noise would add to sudden human confusion, especially if the portal is linked to a city. With it so obscured, no one would think to come out here. There didn’t even appear to be a deer trail. Meaning they can get to this place underground once the portal has been triggered. They don’t even have to be up here.”
“It’s great and all, but how do they get them from here to there?” Yusuke asked.
Hyouga jumped. “We’ll find out in thirty seconds. Get the hell out of the clearing.”
They each took less than a second to process her words before they darted out of the clearing. Their skin began to prickle, telltale signs of an opening portal. Sukuna tripped as the wind began to pick up in a swirl. She stumbled to her feet and leapt behind a bush, clawing her way farther along towards the others.
They had secured vantage points in the trees and bushes, securing themselves from the air torrents. As the wind settled down, they saw a human get to its feet. It shook it head, allowing them to see a female. “Hello?”
Not a second later a portal opened beneath her. She fell through with a shortened shriek. Just as quickly as it had appeared, it was gone. Sha let out a breath she hadn’t realized she had been holding. She looked around, seeing everyone had scrambled. She licked her lips and shakily gave the sign to retreat.
They passed the signal along just in case any missed her. They each got to their feet and returned to the forest. They remained silent the entire way back to the house. Sha could understand the need for a full retreat. If there was a person among them with a rock affiliation, they may be able to track vibrations for a long ways off. Very long, depending on how long they’ve lived. On top of that, they could most likely travel through it. The power to morph through rock was not restricted to a Saint Beast. Without restrictions, they didn’t know if they’d been spotted all along.
If anything, Salem’s house was held up on wooden stilts, and wood covered the first floor. Rock couldn’t penetrate that. So long as they didn’t discuss anything outside, they’d be fine. Salem unlocked the door and ushered them all inside. Once in, he made sure the door was locked before moving on to check on every window in the house. They randomly took seats in the oblong semicircle Salem had made of furniture. Sha set up the communicator and dialed in Koenma.
“So, bad.”
“Yeah, bad,” she agreed. “We’ll need to scout the area-“
“You’ll wait for further instructions, right this moment.”
She looked at the monitor. “Surely you’re joking. We’re on house arrest?”
“Just until we know what we’re dealing with. I’ve spoken to Enki and he’s mobilizing a team of chameleons in to investigate the area. I just figured you’d enjoy not risking your necks looking for just the entrance to the caves. You’re welcome.”
Sha muttered something in Dracish and Hyouga took the communicator. “What she means to say is ‘thank you for this opportunity to devise a plan of attack with my team and work out any tension that shows anyone cannot work together.’ That’s what she meant because we’re working with people we don’t really know,” she slipped in as she saw her squad lead’s confused look. “So we should make sure we can actually work together.”
“Good idea. I’ll forward what you’ve discovered to Enki so his team can map out the area. Until then, enjoy playing trust games.”
It then dawned on Sha what was happening and she locked eyes with Hyouga. And then Kitsu, and vaguely glanced at Sukuna, Yusuke, and Kurama. They knew. Even Salem who was just coming back then, he knew.
If they wanted to play games, they’d get a worthy opponent. The question was, would she? She smirked. “I think it’s a good idea. Salem, do you have a place to train in this wooden fortress of yours?”
“Actually, yes. And I’m starting to think my dad wasn’t as crazy as I first thought.”
