Chapter 13: Many Meetings
***
Breakfast was
laid out on a rooftop terrace to take advantage of the sunny weather. The three
demons were understandably late in getting there, and their guests were already
eating. Kuwabara jumped to his feet as they walked
in. “Urameshi! What happened last night? How come you
were fighting without me?”
The demons looked
at each other. Obviously Kuwabara had sensed their youki the night before, but completely misinterpreted it.
“I could have helped!” he exclaimed.
~Yuck.~
~Indeed.~
~No kidding. Godd thing we locked them all in.~
Yusuke made calming gestures at his friend. “Nobody was fighting anything.”
“I know what I
sensed!”
“Come on, Kuwabara, I told you the three of us were together. Do I
really have to go into detail?”
The ladies all
giggled (or snorted, in Genkai’s case). Of course, Yukina, Genkai and Shizuru all had enough spirit awareness to detect the
energy themselves. Kuwabara said, “But … all three of
you?”
“Well, yeah.”
Yusuke sat down at the breakfast table and helped himself to ham and eggs.
Kurama sat next to his mother; she whispered something in his ear, and he
blushed and nodded. Hiei settled beside his sister.
~What’s it like?~ she thought at him.
~It’s …~ he sent
her a wordless burst of all the feelings he was wrapped in.
~Ahh. I hope I can meet someone to share that with.~
~Sure you will. Kuwabara’s been trying to court you, you know.~
~Is that what
he’s doing?~ she giggled. ~but he’s a man.~
~I don’t think
he was listening when they told him about ice maidens.~
As a matter of fact Kuwabara was pouting at them
right now, aware that they were talking to each other but unable to hear
anything. Like a little child, he couldn’t stand not being in on the action.
When breakfast
was over, the guests split up into several groups: Kurama was going to show his
mother and Shizuru the garden, Keiko and Yukina wanted to play some games, and Yusuke and Genkai were going to study setting wards. That left Hiei
and Kuwabara.
He seized the
redhead by the jacket. “Let’s see if you’ve learned to handle that sword of
yours.”
“Bring him back
in one piece, he’s got a test on Monday,” Shizuru
called after them.
“Hn.”
“Hey! What makes
you think you can show me anything about sword work, shorty?”
“It’s not the
size that counts, it’s how you use it.” Then Hiei had
to stop and wait for the oaf to stand up from his face plant.
***
After a couple
of hours Hiei got bored of smacking the carrot-top around. He left Kuwabara somewhat dazed and went in search of his sister.
He found her in the garden courtyard with Keiko and Audrey; each girl was
holding a badminton racket and the plant demon had one of her vines wrapped
around a third. They were happily swatting a shuttlecock back and forth. “Big
brother,” called Yukina, “Do you want to join us?
There’s an extra racket.”
Thus, when
Kurama emerged from the gardens and Yusuke from his office, they were greeted
with the spectacle of an ice maiden and a fire demon playing doubles opposite a
human girl and a giant pile of leaves. Kuwabara
staggered out of the training hall in time to see it too. “Go, Yukina!” he cheered, almost keeling over.
~You look so
serious,~ Yusuke thought at Hiei with a laugh. Out
loud he announced that lunch was ready. They all headed back to the terrace,
with Audrey rustling happily along behind them; the vine demon was quickly
becoming the pet of the fortress. At least she didn’t smell.
“Are you sure
that thing is safe?” Kuwabara grumbled.
“Of course!”
chirped Yukina. “Shambling mounds don’t eat live
prey. And besides, it’s very rude to eat your Lord’s guests without
permission.”
Hiei snickered
at Kuwabara’s horrified expression. If he hadn’t
gotten it through his thick skull yet that Yukina was
a demon, with demon attitudes, he needed a swift kick in the balls. Hiei hadn’t
gotten around to that this morning.
Lunch was a
relaxed affair with a buffet and Hokushin manning a
grill with surprising aptitude. Yusuke chose to eat pork sashimi just to mess
with Kuwabara, and Audrey had her own tub of ox bones
– though the girls kept feeding her shrimp from their salads. Yusuke wore a
mixture of scowl and grin, the usual result of training with Genkai; he was going to be wild in bed tonight. Kurama had
shifted to his youko form and his mother was chattering something about formal
kimonos. For once, Hiei could enjoy the scene without waiting for the shoe to
drop.
And when the
shoe did drop, he felt more irritated than anxious. A powerful youki flared outside the fortress, making all the sensitives present turn to face it. “What is it?” Keiko
asked.
“It seems we
have more visitors,” said Kurama.
“Mukuro,” Hiei grunted. Just what his day didn’t need.
Yusuke stood up
and waved to Hokushin, who had taken off his apron.
“I’ll handle this in the throne room – tell ‘em to
hide my manga somewhere. And get some more guest
rooms ready in case they end up staying for the night.”
“Yes, my Lord.
Audrey, take care of these dishes.” They left the vine demon with the leftovers
and made their way to the core of Tourin. The humans
all wanted to come along, in spite of the chance that things could get messy;
Kurama asked them to stay close together so that Shiori’s
locket could cover them all. Hiei mentally told Genkai
that she’d better keep the oaf from running off at the mouth again.
Amusingly,
Yusuke’s magazines had been stacked into two small cloth-covered tables
flanking the door, each topped with a not-too-fragile piece of treasure. A set
of chairs for the peanut gallery had also been added. It was into this scene
that Mukuro marched, boot heels thumping on the floor
tiles and not a button out of place. She strode right up to the throne where
Yusuke lounged, his Mazoku markings showing, and his hannin seated to either side.
“I came to see
if the rumors are true,” she said bluntly.
“There are
plenty of rumors about me,” Yusuke answered. “Which one do you mean?”
“That you’ve
stolen Hiei away from me. I see that you have.” Her youki
flared around her and her fists clenched; Hiei just snorted. Yusuke said,
“Stolen? I
didn’t do anything, Hiei chose me. And refused you, if I
remember right.”
Mukuro snarled. “You! What has an
infant like you got for Hiei? Do you have any idea what his life has been
like?”
“Only what he’s
told me.” Yusuke shrugged. Then he sat up and looked her straight in the eye.
“But this I’m sure of – he’s got my back, and I’ve got his.”
Flames licked
up Hiei’s spine. Yusuke just said things like that,
and it never failed to turn his gut s to lava. It seemed to have a similar
effect on Mukuro, who rocked back a step as if
struck. Yusuke continued, “As for the other thing, I know I’m an infant in
demon terms, and I still got into the Demon Tournament finals. Think about what
I’ll be like a couple hundred years from now.”
Mukuro ground her teeth. “He was my only chance, and you
took him away from me.”
Hiei’s turn to
comment. “Your only chance? For a Makai Lord you sure think small. If I can find someone, so
can you.”
She seemed to
be hearing something different than what he said (not that that was anything
new). “Fine, you’ve made your point, I know when to pack it in. I’m outa here.” She turned on her heel and stalked towards the
door.
Yukina stepped out from her seat. “Lady Mukuro?”
“What?” Mukuro whirled, then stopped short
when she saw who was speaking.
“Thank you for
being worried about my brother.”
“Uh … ah … no problem.” Hiei smirked behind her back. He was
no stranger to that hit-with-a-brick expression, and he didn’t need the Jagan to know what was going through her head.
