Chapter Thirteen
There were distinguished gray streaks in the hair of the man in front of you. His posture was a good indication of his high class upbringing with his shoulders held confidently. Mr. Vue was a well respected businessman in China and he certainly looked the part. Especially with his well pressed matching gray suit.
"You are being well cared for?"
You smiled and gently laid your hand over your bulging abdomen, "Very well cared for. Thank you for asking."
The older man nodded as he finally took a seat in one of the comfortable chairs. Unlike a lot of men you had met through this business there wasn't too much that you needed to do to understand his behaviors. He was a proud man and rather straightforward. He never asked one thing and meant something hidden in his words at least. Which was why it was so important that you played off the pregnancy perfectly. If he found out that the company was deceiving him then he would be very displeased. Not only that but his child, illegitimate as it was, would most likely be fatherless. His pride would never allow the centerpoint of the deception into his life.
"How is your wife?" You asked politely.
"She is doing well. She is currently in the process of interviewing candidates to be an overnight nanny for the child."
Which, of course, he believed was growing in your womb. You vaguely wondered what it would be like to have a family so wealthy that they could not only afford the extensive services that the agency you worked for provided but also the staff that he mentioned in passing. You knew his figures from a logical standpoint but it would probably be another thing completely to experience it as though it were the norm.
"I wish her success. I can only imagine what the little one will be like when they're finally born."
Mr. Vue nodded in agreement. There was a certain grace to his aging face that reminded you of nobility. There really was almost a whole different world between those who inherited wealth and kept it and those who had to fight to achieve it. He was definitely in the earlier class of people.
You thanked the person who came in with the hot water and cups. From the looks of it the tea was going to be a bit of a show today. Especially considering that the cups were made out of glass instead of painted porcelain. The plant inside of each glass unfurled as the hot water rose. It really did have a surreal appearance.
To be completely honest you couldn't really taste the tea. But your patron seemed to enjoy it. The conversation continued on about the current economics of foreign investors in China. He was by far more well versed in that matter than you but that wasn't to say you didn't have points to bring up. After all, it was part of your job to keep your clients mentally stimulated. You knew from experience that Mr. Vue has an interest in global economics so you kept as up to date on the trends as you could. Which definitely helped with the current conversation.
You had to wonder, however, why he was even in Japan. It wasn't just to check up on you, that much you knew. If he wanted to see how the pregnancy (fake as it was) was coming then he could have had you visit him in China. Out of the public's eye of course. He and his wife were taking precautions so that when the child was born it would seem like both of theirs.
"I am delighted to know that you care for our welfare as much as you do. But if it really was just that I doubt you would have come all the way to Japan. You're far too important to your company to make this a day trip. So tell me if I'm right. Are you discussing any new agreements with any companies in the area?"
He nodded. What followed was what he perceived as a conversation no doubt. For you, however, it was an interrogation. You gleamed as much information as you could about his company's movements. Each response you tailored slightly so that you could untangle the truths from his statements. That was something you were pretty great at. You had a lot of practice after all.
After Mr. Vue dismissed himself to go see to some of the business that you and he discussed, you were escorted back to the agency. The debrief was short as you sat behind a changing screen. You had to go back to your normal appearance completely before you walked back to your apartment. Otherwise who knows what would happen. So even though you weren't comfortable stripping down while talking to your handlers that's exactly what you did. You told them all the information you'd been able to extrapolate from the conversation with Mr. Vue pretty much just out of habit by this point. As you talked you felt your insides change. They shifted around, justshrinking and collapsing really. Soon after that your skin followed like the most amazing elastic material. It was an unpleasant experience to say the least. At the very least you could say that it wasn't painful; it just wasn't pleasant either.
Once you were done readjusted back to your normal body and had changed into some casual clothes, you moved around the partition. Ichida was already holding out a cup of freshly squeezed orange juice like the life savor that he was. You accepted the glass and started to sip it with a smile. The citrus juice was delicious.
"Thank you."
Ichida nodded in reply with an easy look on his face. "You're welcome."
"So do I have any other engagements for today?"
"None that are new. The only clients you have for the foreseeable future are Mister Minamino and Vue. And as you know Mister Vue will probably be busy for quite some time."
This time it was your turn to nod in acceptance as you digested the information. It wasn't unusual that you only had to focus on one client at a time, especially considering the nature of the role that Shuuichi wanted you to fill. He wanted someone to fill the lonely gap in his life that had apparently formed in the last few years or something to that affect. From what you had seen of him, which wasn't much considering that, he really did need someone. Though you also felt like there was a wall up on his face that you weren't sure he would be comfortable letting you behind. You weren't sure if that was a personal thing or a culture thing. Either way you needed to find a way to bring it down just enough so you could creep in. Otherwise he was never going to feel like his order had been fulfilled. Then again even though he wanted this to be a long term engagement eventually something was going to happen to break the contract.
One day he was going to decide that he didn't want it platonic as all the other men before him had. Or just as likely he was going to hold you at arms' length knowing that you couldn't be with him for the rest of his life. There was also the option that you did manage to make it behind those walls of his and get to the point where you were so ingrained in his life that he spent more and more time with you. It was just the least likely of the three options. If something like that were to happen you'd most likely be revisiting the whole contract revision aspect, which you didn't do, or he'd spend so much money on trying to keep you that his personal finances would fall below the acceptable margin for the company's standards. That would end up breaking the contract and you'd have to move on. That option was also quite sad; especially since you were forbidden to advise against it.
"Till next time," you said smoothly in Japanese.
Ichida smiled slightly and replied in kind. You buttoned up the last button on your jacket as you walked out of the door. After that it was a short elevator ride till you were back on the main floor. You got back to your apartment rather quickly. The subway train system was probably among the best that you had ever seen. Other than the overcrowding issue of course. But then again everyone seemed to try to give you as much room as possible even though there wasn't much to begin with.
As you tried not to think too hard about how crowded the train really was, you made your way into your apartment building. Or at least you tried. You stopped when you saw the young man leaning against the stairway railing with his jacket hooked over his finger while thrown over his shoulder. Unfortunately his long, vibrant hair and seamless features stopped him from looking like a spread in a woman's magazine. Although if he had a chest and wider hips he might have been in there for other reasons. He was pretty enough. More than you, that was for sure. Shuuichi really toed the line between masculinity and femininity in an effortless way. He made you quite envious of his effortless grace.
"Hello Mister Shuuichi."
"Please, just Shuuichi."
"Shuuichi," you verbally amended. "Did you come to see me?"
"Yes. You didn't answer your door so I thought I would wait for you."
You furrowed your brows slightly. "How long have you been waiting?"
"Around 30 minutes."
"Why would you wait so long in the cold? What if I hadn't come back for hours?" You had to switch back over to English at that point because you didn't know how to ask him what you wanted to in Japanese.
Shuuichi shrugged. "I suppose that would mean that I would have caught a chill and you'd be obligated to make some tea to warm me up."
"Because putting your jacket back on would have lowered your cool factor," you teased.
You motioned for him to follow you as you walked up to your apartment. Once you and he were inside you started to work on a pot of tea. If he mentioned it then it must have been on his mind. As you toiled to make the tea properly, Shuuichi lingered near. You knew better than to insist he make himself comfortable. That would be something that came with time. To remind him to do that would still make the situation feel more like artificial relaxing. Like the kind someone felt right before an interview when they were asked to sit down and make themselves comfortable.
"How was work today?"
"It was good. We've gained a new client from China."
You knew better to believe in coincidence. If his new client wasn't Mr. Vue you would be surprised. If it was then that would undoubtedly lead to complications. Especially if you ever visited Shuuichi while he was at work. If Mr. Vue was there you'd be in quite the jam. Until after the birth time had passed you had to pretend to be pregnant around him. At the same time Shuuichi had to idea what you were doing or even what you were. Suddenly adjusting your body to look like the you were in the third trimester would probably freak him out.
"Oh? What are you handling for them?"
"Their company handles supplements and vitamins. As I understand it, they want to extend into the Japanese market."
Definitely Mr. Vue. Damn that was going to make this a bit trickier. Oh well. You supposed that you could look at this like a challenge. You hadn't had one of those in a while. As you contemplated how to not be seen by your two clients at once you also wondered if Shuuichi knew that they were coming out with a new supplement for babies. You weren't sure if you believed that supplements could improve IQ over a long duration but it was an interesting prospect if so. Especially considering that if it did work then it was most likely to work while individuals had the highest levels of neuroplasticity. Which was why targeting babies really was a smart move. And considering how conscious a lot of Japanese parents were over their children's education it was probably a product that would do well in this country. If it was marketed right.
Your eyes looked towards your side as you poured the tea. That last part was where Shuuichi would come in. You knew that his company must have been good at what it did. Otherwise he would have never have passed the economic background check.
"Do you get to design the packaging too?"
"Yes. The artists are drawing up a few options for the different products as we speak. I hope to be able to present them to our client before the week is out."
You set the cup, strainer and smaller tea pot on the matching tray before taking it over to the small coffee table you had. You sat down as you sat the tray done on the table. Shuuichi sat beside you and started to strain the tea into the cup closest to you before you got a chance to say anything. As he poured his own, he smoothly commented on your selection.
"Is this a citrus blend?"
"Yes. I thought it fit with the season. Clementines and navel oranges always taste wonderful when it starts getting cold."
"I suppose the extra vitamins and the fact that it's a hardy plant help."
