Seriously, nobody’s ever seen Yukina/Mukuro?
Ever? o.O
In this chapter: stuff happens. Mukuro. Yomi. Botan.

Chapter 14: Romance among Demons
***
Mukuro ended up staying the night after Hokushin
hastily intercepted and invited her. Seeing her giant caterpillar parked outside
made Hiei somewhat grouchy; it just showed how much he’d loosened up lately. It
used to be he would wake up grumpy for no particular reason. And Yusuke knew
how to deal with his grumpiness: he seized Hiei by the arm and pulled him into
the shower, where Kurama was already waiting, for a thorough three-way wash.
Yes, he was much more relaxed these days.
The breakfast
party had expanded by one. The Lord of Alaric was unusually quiet, and her
constant glances towards Yukina revealed why. So that
was how the wind blew, was it? Hiei intended to disapprove on principle, though
Mukuro was a much better option than a certain
red-headed oaf – if she could keep her hands to herself.
Setting aside her
dishes, Mukuro stood up and brushed imaginary crumbs from
her jacket. She approached the group of girls and cleared her throat awkwardly.
“Miss Yukina, will you walk in the garden with me?”
“Yes, certainly.” Yukina got up
with a sunny smile; Mukuro hid a startled look. She
offered her elbow to the younger demon, who laid her hand on it. Hiei sent a
thought after them: ~hurt her and die, Mukuro.~
~I expect
nothing less,~ she replied.
Across the
table, Kuwabara barely glanced up from stuffing his
face with pancakes. He seemed not to notice that the love of his life was being
stolen from under his nose. Hiei stifled a smirk.
***
Kurama followed
the pair of demon ladies with his gaze as they exited. “It seems to be
catching,” he observed.
“So it seems.”
His mother had noticed the same thing; her eyes twinkled as she sipped her tea.
“I feel as though I should send a gift, but I have no idea what would be
appropriate. At least they won’t have to worry about getting pregnant before
time.”
“You never
know, mother. Yukina’s people reproduce without the
aid of men.” Kurama bowed his head a little. “I know you’ve always dreamed of
having grandchildren …”
She giggled. “I
suddenly have more in-laws than I know what to do with! It’s far too early to
be thinking of children, Shuichi. Besides, in a place like this there must be
many orphans.”
“And any one of
us could find a stray under a cabbage leaf and take it home.” He could just
picture Hiei with a squalling bundle tucked under his cloak.
“Fox …” the fire
demon growled.
“Are you saying
it isn’t true?”
“Hn.” Hiei looked aside.
From the head of
the table Yusuke put in, “I’m a little young yet to be thinking about kids.” Genkai cuffed him on the ear.
“You’re barely
more than a baby yourself!”
“Ow! Even after I master the spirit wave
and all of your warding techniques?”
Kurama’s ears pricked at a subtle change in the surrounding
ki; that was the only warning they had before Botan
popped into view on her oar. “Hi, everyone!” She
inadvertently flew between Yusuke and Genkai, who
were on the verge of pouncing at each other. Then she looked around, saw that
Kurama and Hiei were both there, and blushed bright
red.
“What?” demanded
Yusuke.
“I – well – Koenma – you three – viewscreen – ”
This, combined
with her blush, was explanation enough. “So diaper-breath was spying on us?”
Yusuke’s ki spiked and his markings appeared. “Dammit,
some things even a god can’t get away with.”
Yusuke was so
hot when he was angry. Kurama struggled to keep his breathing under control.
“Did you see us too?” he asked.
“I … um … yes?” Faced with three highly annoyed demons, Botan was about to disappear when Keiko jumped up and
pulled her towards the door. “Botan!
I’ve been wanting to talk to you, I haven’t seen you
in ages. You could at least write!” She dragged the ferry girl off through the
same exit Mukuro and Yukina
had taken. Yusuke looked into his cup. “Is there something in the water around
here?”
***
Hiei perched on Tourin’s highest point in an effort to relieve the headache
brought on by too much socializing. The others were going to the vaults to pick
out some souvenirs. If his sister wasn’t present, he saw no reason to put up
with it; Yusuke kindly excused him, though if he’d ordered him to stay Hiei
would have obeyed. His Toushin wasn’t the type to be
so petty.
So he let the Makai wind blow through his hair, and roamed with his Jagan through the minds and spaces around him.
… to Yukina and Mukuro:
“I don’t know if you’d like the place,”
Mukuro was saying. ~confusion. warmth.~ “It’s gloomy, and there are all
kinds of body parts growing out of the walls.”
“Really?” Yukina flashed her ultimate-finishing-move kitten eyes. “Do you have a nose? A
fuzzy one with freckles?”
“Uh … I’ll see what I can find,” Mukuro answered gruffly.
A faint blush heated her cheeks. Hiei smirked; Yukina
would have her giant nose if Mukuro had to turn her
fortress inside out. ~What do you think
of her, sister?~
~She’s wonderful, brother. She reminds me
of you.~
~We have a lot in common.~
To Keiko and Botan: “If you
weren’t going to tell them, why were you here?”
“I was supposed to try to pick up Raizen’s spirit – Hey! What are you doing with that
finger?” Ick, never mind.
To Audrey the
vine demon: ~scent of fresh earth. well-fed contentment. memory of
shrimps (tasty). nest for fruits to grow in.~ Not
the sharpest knives in the drawer, vine demons.
To Yusuke,
Kurama and the guests: “This place looks
like a pirate’s hoard,” Shizuru said. The vault
they were in held a giant pile of every imaginable treasure, almost reaching
the ceiling at the back. Shiori had already found a
tea service in a carved jade box; Genkai held a
jeweled dagger, and Shizuru had a belt of silver
medallions.
“You should see the liquor stash,”
Yusuke answered. He had found and put on an elaborate set of gold ornaments, a
coronet, neckpiece, belt and cuffs. They made him look even more deliciously
barbaric than usual. The Toushin sensed the Jagan’s touch and sent an image of himself
lounging on the pile of treasure. ~You
want me to wear this while I fuck your tight little ass, don’t you?~
Hiei’s mouth went dry. ~H
– Hai …~
Kurama slyly
held up a filigreed creation of pearls and silver. “Now I think this one would look good on Kuwabara.”
“No way!” The human started backing away from the
frilly thing as if it would drain away his manliness if it touched him. He had
little enough to spare.
Much as Hiei
enjoyed watching the oaf be mocked, he felt his
attention pulled to a point farther away. A familiar,
powerful youki … oh. Crap.
~Yusuke. Heads up. Yomi and his kid are heading this way.~
~Where are we, Tokyo Station?~
***
Yusuke rounded up
their guests and basically hustled all of them home, not wanting humans around
in such a delicate situation – Yomi was much trickier
to deal with than Mukuro, and unlike her was
perfectly ready to strike at bystanders if it suited his purpose. The only ones
Yusuke allowed to stay were Yukina, who was a full
demon in any case and would not be separated from her brother, and Kuwabara, who insisted that he would stick with his team
(ha). “On one condition,” Yusuke told him. “Keep your fricking
mouth shut. Talking to Yomi is tricky enough without
you muttering insults under your breath.” The Human took offense at this and
sulked in the corner. As the others filed through the portal to Genkai’s temple, Yusuke told a (slightly rumpled) Botan, “You tell diaper-breath he’s crossed a line he
shouldn’t have and I guarantee I’ll get him back for it.” The portal closed on
her alarmed face.
They waited in
Yusuke’s office, in a mirror of the two Lords’ first meeting; Hokushin had even sent up some tea; however, there were no
would-be assassins hiding behind a screen this time. Kurama toyed with a strand
of hair. He hadn’t seen Yomi since the Tournament, so
he had no idea how his “journey of discovery” had changed him; observation, not
maneuvering, was his aim in this meeting.
The blind demon
and his son came in looking as though they had just stepped across the street
instead of thousands of miles of jungle. Yusuke set teacups in front of them.
“This is kind of a surprise, Yomi. I didn’t know you
were in the area.”
“I was merely
passing through.” And had a few bridges for sale, no doubt.
“There is no need to be tense; I simply came to visit my erstwhile advisor.” He
nodded at Kurama. “To my shame, you have outwitted me once again.”
“You neglected
to consider certain vital information.” In other words, it was Yomi’s own fault for assuming Kurama had lost his touch and
missing his attraction to the Toushin.
“Indeed. And I
must offer my congratulations to the three of you. Such a strong team is not to
be underestimated.” That was high praise from him.
Kurama nodded
graciously, Hiei grunted; Yusuke scratched his neck. “Well, thanks. Will we see
you at the next Demon Tournament?”
“Of course. My window of opportunity is limited, after all.”
They all knew that in a few years, a match between Yomi
and Yusuke would not end in a draw, though it was a surprise to hear Yomi say it aloud. His wanderings had changed him; matching
wits with him would be more challenging, now that he was finally addressing his
weaknesses.
“Congratulations also to you, Miss Yukina.” He
turned to the ice maiden, who was sitting quietly to the side. “I believe you
have found what you were seeking.”
“Yes, Lord Yomi. I’m honored that you know of me.”
“You are unique
in your own way, Miss Yukina. And this,” he turned to
Kuwabara, “must be the human who should keep his
mouth shut.”
“So you were
close enough to hear that, huh?” Yusuke shrugged, but Kuwabara
made a startled face and edged away from the Demon Lord. Which
was smart of him, considering his habit of saying wildly stupid things about
demons.
“Father, he’s
funny. Can I have him as a pet?” Shura put in.
“We may not
keep humans as pets, by Lord Engi’s decree,” Yomi answered. “Besides, he is under the Toushin’s protection. If you wish for a pet, my son, we
will purchase a suitable demon.” Kurama could see that Kuwabara
was seething, ready to jump up and complain that he didn’t need protecting from
anybody, but for once he was intelligent enough not to say it. Or perhaps Hiei
was using the Jagan to shut him up. Yomi continued, “Now that my curiosity is satisfied, I will
cease my intrusion on your business. I thank you for the tea.”
“No problem.
Good luck on your travels.” Yusuke stood up as the two goat demons left the
room, Shura whining awww,
father, under his breath. Then he returned to his desk and took out a spare
portal ticket. Hiei relayed his mental message: ~ Do you think he’s up to
something?~
~It’s Yomi. Of course he’s up to something.~
~Well,
whatever. Let’s send Kuwabara home before his head
explodes.~ The human was still standing in the same
place, mouth open while he spun his wheels between half a dozen exclamations.
Kurama held back a laugh. ~And after that,~ Yusuke
sent an image of his gold ensemble ~let’s give the old goat some music to
travel by.~

No, I am not going to write a Shura/Kuwa
fic, so don’t ask.
Bad news: there are only two chapters remaining.
Good news: SEQUEL.
Next chapter: Kurama and Hiei get into a fight.
