They each found their own thing to do while they remained under house arrest. They kept all the curtains closed, and did not dare go outside. With one glance at the weather forecasted on the TV, it was shifting another degree colder that day, slipping into almost perfect autumn weather. Although it was also set to rain all day.
Sha had seen autumn all over human and demon world. While humans did have many more variations on the season, she still preferred the one of her home. The red sky would blend with the dying leaves of the trees as they began to shed for upcoming winter. The lightning would illuminate piles of fallen leaves at night, and it would threaten to snow every once-in-awhile.
She sifted through her bag, pulling out garments for training, though it would also work in case they were called out. She secured her halter over her neck and tightened the back to keep it in place. She pulled out her bracers and gloves, deciding to wait to put those on until they were on their way out. With how Enki’s scouts operated, it wouldn’t be much longer. Unless the caves were much more expansive than they had thought. Or if something went wrong.
So far as she knew, they would use a live feed to map out what they could, just in case anything happened to the team sent in. They were highly trained, though anything could happen. Given who they were dealing with, and what, she prayed it would not become a rescue mission.
She pulled on her boots and strapped them in place. She snatched up her bracers and gloves and left the room. She could feel the hook of fire gripping in her intestines. She fought it by moving. She took to the stairs and went to the arena, not finding it empty. Salem held a heavy bag in place while Hyouga struck it repetitively. She backed off, catching her breath and thumbing her hair out of her face. “Hey. Something up?”
Sha shook her head. “Nothing at all. Just prepping for eminent departure.” She nodded towards the bag. “Your strikes aren’t as vicious as usual.”
“Can say the same for you.”
“Touché.” She folded her arms as Hyouga retreated to a bottle nearby. “What do you think of all this?”
“I don’t like it.” Sha saw Salem nod as he stepped away from the heavy bag, muttering something about preparations upstairs. “I mean, most cases have a rocky start, but not like this.” Hyouga turned her gaze to Sha once Salem disappeared around the bend and they heard his footsteps fade upstairs. “Though I am glad Koenma is using the resources available to him. It is making our lives easier.”
“I suppose.” She leaned against the wall while Hyouga patted a towel to her skin. “Almost as if our lives matter.”
“I’d hope they do, at this point. We’ve been working long enough for them to count for something positive, at least.” She tossed the towel aside. “As for what happened to that human in the woods?” She took a steadying breath. “Didn’t want to say it, but I smelled blood when the portal was opened. A lot of it. I know Kitsu smelled the same thing. She’s stayed silent too.”
“So then the portals are taking them straight to the source. Did you smell anything else?”
“Hard to say with all the blood, but I’d say metal. Obviously stone and loose earth. Was too quick for anything else.”
Sha frowned and stepped up to the heavy bag, flexing her fingers into fists to stretch the ligaments. “Metal? Like iron metal?” She struck at the bag sharply. Her trained arms absorbed the impact, leaving pleasant recoils to echo through her muscles. “Or industrial.”
“Industrial.” She watched her friend lay calculated blows to the bag. “Wouldn’t have picked up on it at all if it was iron. So bars are out. Old school ones, anyway. No, these smelled… almost medical.”
Sha froze in her next strike. The heavy bag collided with her fist instead. “So it is true.”
“Most likely.”
She clicked her tongue. “Can’t leave well enough alone, can they?” She rolled her shoulders and stepped away from the bag. “This world is actually turning out decently with Enki in charge. Hell, I hope he wins again and keeps this up. Any demon who says otherwise is blind.”
“I don’t disagree with you there. The labs are being used full time again. Won’t be long before we start to completely surpass the humans in tech again.” She sat on the arena floor. “Though off the record, has your little therapy session been helping you?”
Sha rolled her eyes and sank down to the floor as well. “Putting it that way makes it seem like I’m mental. It’s just sex. Shit, like you’re any better? I’m not the only one not going to bed alone here.”
Hyouga narrowed her eyes, but bit a retort. “You have your thing, I have mine. We’re actually clicking, you know. I… actually like this one.” She pulled her leg to her chest. “So you may have one less for girl’s night soon.”
Sha took a moment to process the news, and then nodded. “Alright, sorry then. Didn’t know you were taking your liaison seriously. Then again, I know you’re not that type of person.”
“And you are, which is fine. If it helps with your focus this much, maybe you should keep fucking him after this mission.”
She cracked a smile and let out an amused huff. “The idea’s been brought up. We’ll see what happens.” She stood and stretched.
“Hey, Sha?”
“Mm?”
“What if it does become more than sex for you?”
She frowned and kept her arms held in front of her. “In the unlikely event it happens and he reciprocates it, I suppose we pursue a relationship?”
Hyouga snorted. “Way to make it sound romantic. Come on, wouldn’t that be great for you? Both of you?”
“It wouldn’t be the worst thing,” Sha admitted. “For now, I just want to enjoy what I have. I don’t want anything else, and I’m going to keep that going as long as I can.”
“He’s that good?”
“I couldn’t see for a few seconds last time. And breathing was like a foreign art.”
“So yeah, good.”
She merely hummed an answer. A throat clearing made her jump and turn around while Hyouga’s gaze merely snapped to the narrow hallway. Hyouga bit back a snort while Sha flushed. Hiei managed to keep mostly a straight face, only a ghost of a smile slipping through. “Salem wanted to know if you were ready for lunch.”
Sha nodded. She looked surprised when Hyouga stepped around both of them. “I’ll see you two upstairs,” she called behind her, disappearing down the hallway he had just come.
They stood in an awkward silence for a moment before he broke it. “I wasn’t aware I had made you lose sight at some point.”
She let out an awkward laugh and he joined in. “I was wondering if you heard that part.”
“That and a little more.” He crossed his arms, his gaze almost puzzled. “You’d actually seek a relationship with someone like me?”
She shrugged and shifted her weight. “Not that I’ve put thought into it, but I don’t see why not.” She arched a brow minutely. “Why, would you seek something with someone like me?”
He scoffed. “Please. Your record does nothing to deter my choices with what I do to you. With you, I mean.”
She smirked. “Why don’t we see what happens, then? We won’t rule anything out, but for now, we keep to our current arrangement.”
“It has already changed once.”
“That was after the first time.” She flicked her gaze over him. “Things change sometimes.”
“I suppose so.” He watched her circle around him to the hallway. “If it changes in any way we accept it and move on.”
She stopped and nodded, turning to him. “If we get bored, we move on. If we end up actually finding each other tolerable…”
He smirked again. “At least tolerable.”
“At least. If at least, we see what happens.” She shifted her weight again. “I’m about a hundred years rusty with the courting thing.”
“That will save us some time as I am horrible at it.” He at least made her laugh.
“Good. Then if it comes to it, we’ll know it’s actually working out. If neither of us has any special tactics, it’s not bloodlust any longer.” She tilted her head to the hallway. “I’m heading up. Wise to eat while we can.”
“Could do that right here.”
She furrowed her brow. “I thought you said the stocks had to be replenished.” His grin made her realize his entendre. She rolled her eyes but met his grin. “I’m sure you could. However there is the factor of a house full of awake and wandering people.”
“You do realize this was built as an emergency bunker and each room has a lock?”
She stepped backward. “Do they now?” She turned on her heel.
He watched her retreating pace, finding his feet following her down the hall. She stopped in front of the divide, though instead of turning left for the stairs, she stared straight down the small hall of doors. Then she said just what he needed to hear to send a rush through his veins.
“Well that’s an entirely different story, isn’t it?”
He didn’t think he moved as fast as he did in decades.
