Sha briefed them before they left and let them view the footage Koenma had sent her early that morning. They planned out their course and stuck to it carefully, planning to reserve their energy as best they could. Age and experience had taught them all time and again to think ahead. Some more than others.
They took the same route they had when the portal was discovered, but veered off course after six hours of walking. They followed what appeared to be a deer trail through the brush, hands always at the ready to draw their weaponry. To their uneasy nerves, nothing came. What made them more uneasy was not the idea that no sentinel had blocked their path. No, instead, they each took note of the stillness of the forest. Nothing moved. No sound besides the wind and continuous thunder of the sky starting to grey as the cold of mid-November crept ever closer.
A thick patch of vines blocked their path, forcing them to push them aside. Once the fauna started to thin out, they saw a tiny cavern, with the walls so high they knew it was from the mountain that had started to form on their right as they walked. They halted as the cave front came into view. Nothing stood guard outside of it either.
“I don’t like this,” Kitsu muttered. “There should have been something. They know they’ve been found. Why wouldn’t they protect what’s left?”
“They could also be long gone,” Kurama supplied. “If this is the case, there would be no need to post guards to prevent entrance.”
Sha looked to Salem. “Do you think you can use the shadows again?”
He cracked his knuckles and wiggled his fingers. “Yeah, I’m on it the moment we’re in there.”
She nodded and looked to the rest of them, her hand on her rapier. “From what we know, there’s a lot of humans in there. We don’t know what’s left, so silence the rest of the way.”
They followed the predesignated path into the cave systems, and took to the tunnels in a line, following the mapped out paths. They took no chances, treading cautiously and in silence. Salem kept to the center of them all, keeping his shadow abilities active to detect traps. It took some time for them to emerge into the chamber on the video. However, just like in the recording, not one trap laid in their way. Dim light began to fill the darkness. Torchlight.
They slowed their pace as they entered a dimly lit hall, the same one in the clip. Yusuke held up a hand to stop them. “This is where they were, right?”
Sha nodded and looked around. “Just about.”
Hyouga knelt, her eyes unblinking. “I see drag marks. Lots of them. Given the setting, I’m not surprised.”
Kitsu tilted her ears towards something, her head following after. She narrowed her eyes and strode down the hallway at a steady gait.
“Kitsu?”
“I heard something.”
They followed the white tip of her tail as she rounded a corner, into another corridor of glass panes. Dim lights filled each chamber. The stench was almost unbearable, to the point Sha was surprised Hyouga or Kitsu were not gagging. The cells were empty, from what they could see.
“I don’t like this,” Sukuna muttered. “The clip had these cells filled. When did we get the feed again?”
“Yesterday,” Sha answered, just as low to minimize echoes. She looked to Hyouga. “Harvested, you think?”
Hyouga nodded. “Had to have been. There’s a lot of human stench in here. The smell has yet to fade.” She looked at Yusuke. “No offense.”
He took it in stride. “Which means they’re cleaning house,” Yusuke said. “They know we’re on to them. We should keep looking.” He turned to Salem. “Anything on your radar?”
He knelt down to the ground and concentrated. “Yeah, movement below. A lot of it. Both organic and mechanical. It’s like… almost like a factory.” He swallowed and frowned. “And something on this level. It’s a little out of…”
“Out of what?” Sha asked.
He quickly stood. “We need to leave. Now.”
“What is it?”
“Something large. Demon. His aura is something I’ve never felt before, but it...” He took a steadying breath. “It just feels like death.”
Sha’s heart skipped a beat. Heat flashed through her body.
“What do you mean ‘like death’?” Yusuke asked.
Salem licked his lips. “Like this thing has soaked in the blood of hundreds of demons. It’s just radiating thick copper.”
Hyouga noticed how her friend had stiffened, saw the thoughts racing behind her eyes. “Sha…”
“It might be. I have to at least try.”
Hyouga shook her head. “We don’t know enough to split off. Especially on your own.”
“I can’t let this chance pass by.”
“And if it is you’ll get killed.”
Sha curled her lip, fangs bared at her friend. Her voice came out heavily accented, almost half Dracish. “Then at least I’ll know I died by the same hands he did.” She turned her back to the others and drew her rapier. “Where is the source, Salem?”
Salem almost didn’t answer. Until a cold slip of Sha’s aura flicked over his skin. “The humans are below, with the access tunnel straight ahead. The aura is coming to our right. About two kilometers down.”
He didn’t even finish his sentence before she was running in that direction, her footfalls disappearing along with her.
“What the hell was that? Does she have a death wish? What I felt will skin her alive!”
Hyouga hushed him. “I don’t like it either, but you cannot argue with a dragon. And she’ll flay you if you help her with this one.” She kept her gaze down the path. “We can only hope it is not who she thinks it is.”
“Which would be?”
“She has a personal vendetta against this one. Her mate’s killer.”
Blood pounded in her ears as she ran. Rage simmered under her skin. Her bloodlust reignited in full, forcing the entire last week to be a moot point. She could only see red. She vaguely felt her skin itch and her nails tingle. The heat of her rage shifted to her throat. Her fingers gripped the pommel of her rapier tight. She slowed herself as she came upon a narrow entrance to a larger chamber, already lit up. She felt her breath heavy against sharper and larger teeth. Her pace stopped at the entrance. Her heart leapt.
She was not alone in that chamber. There was no mistaking the aura that engulfed her body, heavy with the weight of blood. A large mass moved on the other side, immediately shifting its attention to her. Otherwise, it stayed in place, intangible in the dark. It smiled, the central light reflecting off its sharp teeth.
“I heard you’ve been looking for me.”
The deep basso rattled her body, but she held firm. “For a long time.”
“I hate to keep you waiting then. You’ve been holding out for death for so long.”
She kept her eyes trained on the mass, still unmoving. “You made me lose everything I had gained. Everything that I finally thought I deserved.”
“I did hit your stomach fairly hard that day. How long did you bleed for?”
She huffed a growl, clenching her fangs. “A lot longer than it will take to drain you of your blood.” She held her rapier in an opening stance.
The form in the shadows laughed and shifted forward into the light. A hulking beast of a demon toward over her, fangs protruding upwards from his lower jaw and violet eyes focused on her in amusement. He held up claws, ready to strike. She knew he had other arsenal on him. She could only hope she had outgrown his skills over the years. No matter the outcome, her goal would be accomplished. Make all the sacrifice and pain count, or finally join the ones she loved or the one she never had the chance to hold. Her grip on her rapier tightened.
“Don’t make me wait any longer.”
“As you wish.”
