The group continued forward, following the trail of drag marks further into the tunnel systems. The elevation lowered, signaling their descent further into the mountains. They immediately slowed as the walls began to give way to doors. The smell grew stronger to Hyouga’s nose, diluted only by water seeping through the soil around them. “What do you think, Kitsu?”
The vixen was always her verification when it came to scents. Her nose was more potent as a purebred fox demon. Her ears kept focused ahead of them. “I’m starting to pick up screams. Faint, but not much farther I’d imagine given the smell.”
Hyouga nodded and extended her hand, stopping their pace. “Anything on your radar, Salem?”
“Nothing as powerful as before. That doesn’t mean there isn’t something else hiding, using the beast upstairs as bait.”
“That doesn’t seem too far off,” Kurama ventured. “However, I believe there is an alternative. I believe the creature upstairs was meant to stay hidden.”
“What makes you say that?” Sukuna said.
“It would have gone undetected if Salem hadn’t sensed it, due to the overwhelming stench of human blood. The creature was meant to prevent us from leaving, or to catch us off guard.” He kept Hyouga’s eye. “There may be another there, also masking it’s presence as it is meant to be found and thus would need to hide its true potential. Whereas the other was meant to stay off to the side and take up the rear.”
“If that’s the case, let’s just hope Sha survives long enough to keep it busy,” Yusuke said, also looking to Hyouga. “What should we do?”
“Only thing we can do,” she answered. “Solve the case and go home.” She tilted her head the direction they were heading. “Weapons at the ready. We go in swinging if necessary.”
They readied their energy and weaponry, moving forward at a steady pace. They steeled their nerves as the screaming reached all of their ears, most of them finding a need to tune it out. It was one thing to hear the screams of those fearing for their lives. It was another to hear the ones in the throes of death. Tortured cries cut short, only to be replaced by new pitches.
The smell was another thing they were having trouble ignoring. Blood was one thing. Decaying flesh and excrement was another thing entirely.
Hyouga began to pick up on voices merged with the screams, almost unintelligible until they were closer.
“… too much more. We’ll have it all taken care off in the hour. Only one more sector to clear out.”
“Good. I’m getting tired of the noise. Glad to be rid of this shit.” Orders were shouted around, followed by the cracking of a whip.
The tunnel began to widen out, but they still kept close, prepared to strike. The moment they exited into a cavern, they stood at the ready, assessing their surroundings for only a moment.
That moment was all they were allowed. It was all they needed.
It was a harvest. That was the only word that could have been used to describe the grisly sight. Humans were strapped on tables, torn apart and soaking in their own life blood as demons pulled out organs.
All while still alive.
They took in the sight of a pile of bodies, rotting as more demons took a few at a time to what had to have been the machine Salem heard. Corpses were being loaded on to a conveyer belt, into a machine. What came out could no longer be distinguished as human. Slabs of red meat from various cuts were being sorted as demons on the other end were packing lined crates.
Everything but the machine stopped at the sudden intrusion.
Hyouga’s nails bit into her skin and her icy energy flowed through her veins. “Leave no one standing.”
The team nodded their understanding and rushed forward. Soon, humans were not the only ones filling the air with noise.
Above, Sha met her opponent blow for blow, dodging wayward strikes with his claws. At one point, he drew a scimitar, filling the cavern with the sounds of clashing metal. The blades met and they each pushed for dominance, forcing the hilts to meet.
He grinned wide. “I see you grew since last I saw you. In talent, at least.”
She huffed a scoff through her fangs, feeling her muscles scream in protest as he pushed equally as hard against her weapon. She wouldn’t grace him with a response. She was having a hard enough time concentrating on fending off his strength, considering their opposing mass alone.
From what she had read, she’d be able to meet his blows, but not fend him off. Parrying would be a problem. She threw off his balance and swung out of his way, reengaging the offensive. Regardless of how she felt, she couldn’t stop. She refused to let him walk way without giving her dying breath first. She summoned her energy around her arm, forming a sphere in her open palm. She held up the other as it slithered up her sword.
“You’ve learned a few tricks as well.”
“Why?”
“I’m sure you’re the one who knows why you learned those tricks, not, I.” He dipped out of the way of a blast thrown his way. Another loaded into her palm.
“What was he wanted for? None of his crimes warranted execution.”
“It was exactly one of his crimes that put him on my list. They all made the wrong person very angry. Took me a few months to track that one down.”
She stood still. There had been a raid that she had missed. They had left her out of the loop. Now she knew for good reason. But what exactly. “Who did they piss off?”
“They were going to sell information about something highly classified of the early stages of the Black Black Club. They were going to deal with the SDF and provide information that could have annihilated the club’s foundation.”
“Going to?”
The demon grinned. “I came along.”
She held back a growl. She wasn’t going to bite. Enough time had passed for her rage to calm. That didn’t mean that her bloodlust wasn’t rising. She remembered being sent away on a personal mission, and she had taken it with earnest. It was hard to prove that a half dragon was worth anything to anyone. Even if she had gained the affections of the full one on the team.
“It was quick, if you need reassurance.”
She gripped her sword tighter. She had blocked that from her memory for years. She kept herself steady, though her heart raged. “So since the Black Black Club has been dismantled since the last Dark Tournament, you switched employers?”
“Not exactly. One member survived, so I stayed in his employment. He hasn’t rebuilt the club, so much as just used its name. He’s used this operation to also provide organs on the black market. If there’s a demand, he’ll take his required cut, while the demons handle the rest. All in all, it’s a fair trade off these days.”
She felt her blood boil. “How is he still alive?”
“He wasn’t involved in the tournament, and Sakyo saw profit in the organs. He was allowed to continue his work.”
“So a portion was going back into the club.”
“Exactly. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.” He adjusted his posture. “I think that’s enough for now. Survive for a little while longer and I’ll tell you more.”
She also corrected her stance. “Or I’ll just force you to tell me, one way or another.”
The demon grinned. “Your move, Detective.”
