The group continued in the opposite direction, following the trail of drag marks further into the tunnel systems. They immediately slowed as the walls began to give way to doors, and the smell grew stronger.
“Hyouga…” Kitsu murmered.
Hyouga nodded. “I know.”
“What is it?” Yusuke asked.
“Not something you want to know,” Kurama answered. “I thought it was outlawed.”
“It is. For now,” Hyouga answered. “Whoever is doing this is risking a lot to do so.” She looked to Yusuke. “They’re keeping the supplies running of human organs.”
“Highly illegal last I checked,” he agreed with a nod. “Like you said, at least for now. What if they’re also stockpiling? The next tournament is in a few months, isn’t it?”
Hyouga felt her stomach tilt slightly. “If they are storing anything, this would be the perfect time to have a boost in… harvesting.”
“Which would explain the increase in missing persons suddenly,” Sukuna supplied.
Salem took a step inward from the doors. “There are some in there still alive. I can’t tell how well, but alive, at least.”
“Then we’ve got to get them out.” Hyouga nodded to the others. “Might be a vicious fight behind these doors. You all ready?”
They each nodded, holding up either weapons or energy. She waited the customary three seconds before opening the doors, momentarily surprised they were unlocked.
Machines met their eyes in every crevice of the two-story room, devices meant for harvesting. Humans were bound to each one, either screaming and writhing, or silent and still. Mounds of empty shells lay piled to the side, while cages in the back held only three shivering forms.
Demons operating the machines were thrown for only a moment. Immediately they abandoned their posts, drawing crude weapons made of bones.
Hyouga looked to the others and nodded. No one on the team had to say a word. They each remembered training together and did their part while aiding another.
Sukuna created a net of webbing, tripping the first wave. Kitsu used a blue water leaf to summon a whip with poisonous thorns. Her ability aided in her gift to manipulate the poisons in the thorns. She struck the first wave, weaving out of the way so Yusuke could take over with a shotgun blast to the second wave of four demons. The remaining eighteen demons split off, leaving a few of the teammates to pair off as they were cornered.
Hyouga held up her fist, forming a blade of ice, Kitsu at her back as four advanced on them. Three cornered Hiei, Two advanced on Yusuke and two more on Kurama. The rest were one-on-one with opponents. Not long after, another swarm emerged from crevices in the walls.
Salem ducked a swing from one of the demons and opened the shadows below it. Another launched itself at him and he dipped down, using momentum to swing the demon over his back into the pit made of shadows. Sukuna wrapped up her first opponent and tripped it. As it toppled for balance she knocked it into Salem’s pit. It wasn’t long before she had to repeat her attack, though Salem came to her aid for the last two that decided to come after the both of them.
Yusuke opened fire on the two heading for him. One managed to get out of the way, but lost an arm in the process. Kurama flung his whip through the two advancing on him, and then swiped around to get the rest of Yusuke’s target.
Hiei unleashed his flames to his fists, not seeing a point in using his dragon in the small space. His targets attempted to swing at him, but he used his abnormal speed to weave around them. The demons ended up with scorch marks before he brought his sword up to cut through the weakened flesh.
Hyouga sliced through the two on her side, making sure to freeze any blood that she exposed. In a result, the demons targeted slowed substantially, allowing Kitsu to deal with the remaining two. Her plant of choice was naturally hallucinogenic to her targets. However, she manipulated that toxin. Not only would her targets hallucinate, they would do so until they died from the following poison.
While they fought, they didn’t see one larger target come to the forefront. Only when the demons were down, getting a few good swings in, did they see the other figure in the room. Hiei tugged one demon off his sword as they all focused on their next target.
“Who do you think you are, interrupting my work?”
They looked to the side as a monitor flickered to life. A human took up the screen, his black hair cut short to his head. Intense green eyes sized them up. Hyouga stood forward. “We’re here to shut this down, you sick freak. This has been illegal for three years.”
“But not forever, from what I understand.” The human shifted. “The next tournament in demon world is fast approaching, and we may just get a new leader tired with your domestication process.”
“You’re well-informed of our news,” she said, still sizing up the human, as well as the immediate threat in the room.
“My employers find it beneficial to keep me informed. I’m able to procure more of what is needed if I’m in the know.” He gave a slight nod and the screen went blank.
They weren’t given time to think before the figure in the room shifted again, jaws moving in a vicious grow. It towered over each of them, and seemed more canine in demonic origin. They each grew cautious. “Salem?” Hyouga muttered.
“I can’t get a read on him. Just assume powerful.”
“Great.” She held up her fist again. “Be ready for anything.”
Sha’s back collided with the wall hard. She let out a reactive grunt as the wind was knocked out of her lungs.
Her opponent wiped at his jaw with a grin. “At least this won’t be a disappointing kill. You’re making it interesting.”
“Hate to disappoint,” she hissed, getting back to her feet. She ached everywhere. She refused to give up and held her sword ready.
“Still have energy to fight? I am impressed.” He held his own weapon at the ready. She hadn’t been entirely unsuccessful with her hits. She just wasn’t doing as well as him.
She wouldn’t let him know that. She shifted her stance. She wouldn’t humor him in speech. Instead she struck, her heart dropping as she saw his arm shoot up last second. The blow struck her ribs, sending her back again. Her ears rang and her chest was in agony. She grit her teeth and got up again. She wasn’t going to let him walk away.
“Revenge is a fire that sizzles out. It is not a power to rely on.”
She held her sword forward again. “That is not what I am here for.” She’d indulge him, just to give her ribs time to seal the cracks.
“Oh? Enlighten me then. What would make you dare face me alone? Knowing what you knew then, knowing I’d grow just like you, if not more?”
She kept her focus on his purple eyes. “It did drive me for a long time. But as you said, it dies out. I then sought you out for myself. I knew if I could beat you one day, that I truly deserved to outlive my sect.”
“So you believe you can do it?”
“We’ll have to see, won’t we?”
He took another stance as well, summoning blue energy to his open fist. “Stop playing then. Transform.”
Her heart hammered. She could transform only for so long, unlike her full-blooded kin. It greatly weakened her to top it all off. If she did not succeed while shifted, she would not walk away. She took a deep breath and nodded. She took her sword’s sheath from her belt and replaced the rapier. As she slid the sword back in place, her energy crackled around her. Her bones began to crack and her ribs healed at a hyper-rate. She could only hope it would be enough.
Given what happened to Sven, her hope quickly died. She knew she would be fighting until her last breath. She hunched over, her shape transforming to that of a beast.
The demon looked on in mild interest as her body twitched and reformed, much smaller than any dragon he had ever faced. Each twitch she gave a more and more warped snarl. Soon, she stilled, her form breathing heavily on four legs. He took a curious step forward.
Her head immediately flicked in his direction, lips raised in a malicious snarl. Her vibrant red eyes trained on him as she hissed.
His curious step forward became a cautious one back.
True she was smaller, and true she had less power than that of full blood, but she had learned to make up for her handicap. She leapt forward, showing she had trained her beast’s speed, using the smaller size to her advantage with agility.
He had to switch up his dragon tactics on the fly. He held up his sword as she struck with her jaws, replacing what would have been flesh with steel. She growled into the metal and let go with a jerk of her head.
She leapt back, aided by her small wings, taking to the shadows and laying low, switching to what could only be described as stalking.
“You are impressive, for a runt,” the demon said, looking around the room as she slithered behind a large rock.
She couldn’t answer even if she wanted to, using that to her advantage. She laid low, watching him assess his surroundings.
“You make up for your size with agility. You don’t rely on brute strength and magic. Avoidance will only get you so far.”
She knew that, and had more tricks up her sleeve. She just hoped she had enough energy to perform enough. There was no strain just yet, but she knew it was inevitable.
He gripped his sword tighter in one hand, using the other to ignite a ball of fire. “I’ll find you yet, tiny dragon. And then we’ll see if you’re just as fireproof as the other one.”
Her heart skipped a beat as her vision went red for only a moment. She quickly recomposed herself, not giving in to the rise. She had long locked away that memory, of that particular smell. Her hackles rose. She was more determined than ever to walk away from the fight. Or at least bring him down with her. Either option was more preferable than letting him walk and destroy any other lives.
She locked her body, ready to spring. At the same moment his gaze locked on her. He grinned and raised the fire hand. “Come on, tiny dragon. Try it.”
She pounced. He fired. She growled. He grunted.
Silence fell upon the cavern as it settled once again.
