Author’s Note: This chapter will be a little longer than my
last one; because there’s a lot of explaining I have to do in this
chapter. So, this is my “clear
everything” chapter.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
The
worry in Songbird’s eyes grew as she answered him. “My boyfriend.”
Kurama’s
emerald green eyes narrowed slightly.
For someone who claimed to be her boyfriend, he had a horrible way of
showing it. But still his main concern
was for her to be treated, although he very well couldn’t force her. He looked at the paramedic helping her. “Does she need to go to the hospital?” he
asked him.
The
paramedic shook his head. “She’ll have
a slight headache, but other than that and her lip, she’ll be fine,” he
answered, helping the woman onto a barstool.
“There we are.”
Songbird
blinked, not really knowing what was happening in front of her. How could she have been so stupid trying to
hide again? She held her hands over her
mouth, not realizing that she was shaking.
She couldn’t really hear anything except the pounding of her own
heart. She bolted from the barstool and
raced backstage into a room, not fully closing the door behind her. With shaking hands and teary eyes, she
changed back into her street clothes.
“Everyone,
we are closing early tonight,” Mako was saying on the microphone. “I’m really sorry, and I will let you all in
again free of charge on your next visit.
Good night, and drive safe.”
As
the people started to leave, Kurama looked around and couldn’t find her. Where could she have gone off? She didn’t need to be alone at the moment.
Kuwabara
looked at the redhead worriedly. “Hey,
is she all right?” he asked him.
“She’s
just a little more frightened than usual,” he answered. “I’ll go and check on her.”
Kuwabara
nodded as he and Yusuke left the club to talk to the police.
Kurama,
in the meantime, walked backstage, where he could hear a woman sniffling. It was definitely Songbird. She probably thinks it was her fault,
he thought.
‘It
wasn’t. It was that son of a bitch that
came in here and hurt her.’
You’re
right. He had no business hitting her;
she had done nothing wrong. With that thought, he knocked on the door
once and realized it was open slightly.
Peering inside, he saw a sorry sight.
Songbird
was already dressed back in her street clothes, but she held a tissue to her
eyes. Her shoulders heaved as she was
trying to gain some air into her lungs.
The attack obviously scared her, but what scared her more was when she
turned her head, she saw Kurama. “Don’t
you know how to knock?” she asked, her voice straining to remain calm, although
it wasn’t that easy at the moment.
Kurama
knew the events earlier spawned an obvious fear in her. “I’m sorry,” he apologized, looking at the
shaking woman. “Do you need a ride
home?”
“I
can walk,” she blurted out unexpectedly.
“Not
alone, you’re not,” he answered and wrapped an arm around her. “Come on, I’ll take you home,” he said, not
wanting to scare her anymore than what she already was.
She
flinched at having someone’s arm around her shoulders. Who did he think he was?
But
when she didn’t respond, he looked at her again. “It’s all right now,” he said consolingly to her. “He’s not going to hurt you.”
She
blinked and looked up at him, swallowing a lump in her throat. She wasn’t sure what to make of what was
going on, but as they walked out of the room and into the main area of the
club, she knew she wasn’t going home alone.
She didn’t have a choice.
“Hey!”
Yusuke’s voice rang out behind them, which made Songbird literally freeze.
Kurama
turned around. “Yusuke, what is it?” he
asked his friend.
“They
want her to press charges on him,” Yusuke said, and with that answer, Songbird
paled considerably.
“Yusuke,
she’s obviously been through a horrible ordeal,” Kurama objected calmly. “She clearly needs a little time to gather
herself.”
“Please,
can we leave now?”
Kurama
blinked and looked at the pale-faced woman as she looked up at them.
“I’ll
tell them to wait till morning,” Yusuke told them.
As
Songbird nodded her head, Kurama answered, “Thank you, Yusuke.” Turning back in the other direction, his
hand tightened on the woman’s shoulder slightly. “Come on.”
She
nodded and, after a thirty-minute walk, arrived at her home. She felt in her pocket for the key and
dropped it on the mat. Cursing to
herself, she bent down to get the key, finally remembering she didn’t turn the
outside light on.
Youko! Kurama was
horrified at the perversion on Youko’s side.
He had only known her for a few days before now, and already he was
thinking of sex. She’s too
frightened right now!
Kurama
growled inwardly.
“Oh,
there it is,” she said, picking up the key and standing up straight again.
Kurama
blinked as she unlocked the door and opened it, turning on the inside lights as
she walked in. The living room was
small but cozy, with a couch, a TV, and two standing lamps. From what he could see, she was safe
now. “Nice place,” he said, hoping she
would warm up a little after he closed the door.
Songbird, however, was already on the couch,
bunched into a ball. Her bare feet
rested on the edge of the couch cushion as her head rested on her hugged
knees. “Thank you,” she managed through
her choked throat.
Kurama
couldn’t really leave her alone, as scared as she was. He quietly made his way over to the softly
sobbing woman on the couch. “Do you
want me to fix you anything?” he asked.
When she looked up at him, he blinked. The tears had already started falling from her eyes and streamed
slowly down her face, over the bruise, which her boyfriend had given her. “How about some tea?” As she nodded, he got up from the couch and
started for the kitchen.
She’s
just been attacked, Youko. She needs a
little time to feel more composed.
Kurama put the water
in the teakettle and set it on the warming stove. Figuring it’d be a little while; he’d at least try to get her to
open up a little more. He walked back
into the living room and picked up a picture of what looked to be Songbird in a
school uniform.
‘Mmmmm…. If only
that skirt was a little shorter…’
Youko, enough! “Nice
picture,” he said, sitting on the couch next to her.
She looked at the
picture as she sat in an Indian style.
“That was before…” she started but then stopped.
“Before?” Kurama
prodded with a blink in her direction.
He had a feeling something was wrong, and, as usual, he was right. Next to it was a small picture of a young
man and woman with Songbird in her uniform.
“Four years ago,” she
answered, drying her eyes. Thinking she
was pressured, she scooted away slightly just as the kettle had gone off.
“I’ll get that,”
Kurama told her as he got up. He went
into the kitchen and found some tea bags.
“Let’s see… chamomile. That’ll
soothe her nerves,” he said to himself as he put in a tea bag in each cup and
poured the water in the teacups.
Setting the teakettle down and turning down the stove, he picked up the
cups and headed back in the living room, setting them down on the coffee table
in front of her. He held one to
her. “Here, it’ll calm your nerves.”
She looked at the cup
in his hands and took it. “Thank you,”
she answered, nodding her head as she took a sip and blinked.
Kurama sat down on
the couch next to her, his teacup on the other side of the table. “Do you feel a little better?” he asked her.
She nodded, setting
her cup and saucer on the coffee table.
“A little, actually,” she answered, her voice still strained with
emotion.
“Do you want to be
alone, Songbird?” Kurama had a feeling
the conversation was dying fast.
She blinked and
looked at him. “I have a name, you
know,” she answered.
“Well, how come no
one knows it?”
“Because he’ll hurt
them,” she answered, holding the framed picture in her hands.
“Like he hurt you?”
She blinked, nearly
dropping the picture if Kurama hadn’t caught it. “He… he didn’t mean it,” she answered. “He just gets like that when he’s had a little too much to drink,
is all.”
Kurama knew
differently, but he didn’t want to upset her.
In fact, he didn’t need to; she was upset enough. But as she looked at him, he could sense a
hidden emotion, something she didn’t want anyone to know. “I’m sorry if I upset you,” he said,
standing up. “I’ll leave you to
yourself now. Good night.” He walked to the door and walked
outside. When he heard the clicking of
the locks, he knew she was a lot of work.
“What happened four years ago?” he asked himself.
‘Why not ask her
tomorrow night?’
She’s already
upset, Youko. She doesn’t need any more
pressure on her right now.
‘I know the kind
of pressure she needs…’
Youko!
‘What?’
Enough already! Kurama
continued to walk back to his apartment, and after he walked in, he turned on
the lights and sat down on the couch.
What could have happened to her four years ago that made her turn into a
frightened kitten? Then again, she
didn’t really trust him well enough to tell him anything. She just needs a little time to calm down
and compose herself.
‘A LITTLE
time? Shuichi, she’s gonna need a
year!’
I doubt that, Kurama told his Youko half. She’ll be all right after some well-deserved rest.
‘Well, why not go
back to her place?’
Youko, if I did
that, then she’d call the police on me. Kurama took a deep breath and went to his
bedroom. There, he changed into a pair
of flannel pajama bottoms and lay down on his bed. I just hope she’ll be all right, was the last thing he
thought before going to sleep.
In the meantime,
Songbird had already put the cups back into the kitchen after locking the
door. The apartment was so quiet she
could hear a pin drop. She looked
around, thinking she heard her boyfriend’s voice. Shaking her head, she went to their bedroom and changed into a
deep blue nightshirt.
She looked at herself
in the mirror, at the bruise that she had received. As she reached to touch it, she winced as she traced her finger
down to her lip. Was it really my
fault I had this happen? She thought to herself as she looked at a picture
of her and her boyfriend smiling. Did
he really mean it? When she looked
up at the mirror, she shook her head.
No, he couldn’t have meant it.
She went to the bed
and laid down on it. Maybe some
sleep would help, she thought. And
maybe figure out why Minamino was around me. Closing her eyes, she fell asleep, hugging the pillow that had
cradled her boyfriend’s head the night before.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Hey,
y’all. Kit here. In case you didn’t get it, she doesn’t trust
Kurama. I know it’s wrong, but that’s
how she is. The next chapter: Will Kurama is able to know what happened to
her four years ago? Will he know
Songbird’s real name? And what of her
boyfriend? Will he stay in jail for the
attack on her? All that in the next
chapter. R/R.
