Chapter 2: Little
steps

The tiger looked down on the sleeping human in
the bed.
He resided currently in the lap of a certain
fox-demon he just meets two hours ago in the same ones apartment.
They had much to talk about, besides the a
little odd looking pair stand a smaller figure who held an arm around a taller
one. Both had black hair and seem to be very close.
All had needed the last hours to sort their
current dilemma out.
It was more then clear to them all that
something was about to go wrong in the Reikei.
The long awaited war between the older and the
younger avatar has arrived and now the all where no longer save, wherever they
were.

But more important for the trio and the tiger
in their middle was the fact that their human friends were now on the top of
list of people who would get hurt, one way or the other, in this appearing war!
The three above Byakko where allot stronger as
the human you would think; Wrong!
He was the strongest fighter in the human realm
and thus that; their friend.
The fox, that currently busied his hands with
petting his fur, was a sly creature; he had come up with the plan to let him
solve the problem they had with this particular human.

Not even the ex-detective had uttered a word at
his plan. The young ruler only made it clear to the tiger that he wanted his
friend happy and that he would be worse as the avatar when Byakko did any harm
to the ningen.
Shuddering, the cat demon took Yusukes eyes to
his memory of the most unpleasantly sights he ever got in his long live!
His eyes gave him a glimpse of what would
happen to him if he failed and brought the human in any trouble possible.
Shuddering again, Byakko tried to quit his
trail of unpleasant thoughts before they would hunt him forever!
This turned demon was dangerous!

Then again, he could not really mind the young
ruler for this, it was normal to be seriously treated in his home realm.
Yusuke was no exception from the rule.
Hiei had done so too, and Kurama also, it was
only natural for him.
After Byakko had gotten what he was about to
get; he would go to toranin and work for the former human.
He had decided that would be the smartest for
him and the ningen he wanted as a partner.
He looked from the side at the couple beside
him once more; Hiei hold on the former detective with a possessive grasp,
silently chuckling the fox above him seem to follow his trail of thoughts with
ease. The two where secretly mates, Byakko knew what this meant for him. They
showed him a rare trust in letting him know this, a trust they would want to
have repaid in his care taking of their friend!
He would not tell a word of this to any living
or death person ever!

It was highly rare that two rulers or to be
rulers gone so well along each other. Highly rare for yokai in general, but
then again, had this strange group ever been something near to be normal?
Suddenly he was taken to the ground from Kurama
and then the other three vanished from his sight, Byakko stretched slightly
before he got to work.
He had a human to convince to be his partner!

Partner, in Makai had the same meaning as
lovers in human standards.
Mostly the relationships in the Makai where
build of on sexual meanings but real partners who looked at each others back, where
highly rare to find.
The two Shinobi were a good example for this
principle, they where partners in any meaning.
This was known in the Makai, as it was also
known that both had a relationship running that could turn with time in
something more.
As the one the two rulers has with the time. It
happened often but not generally.
Many partner-relationships in the Makai were a
test for the partners. If the two partners could go along with each other well
or could become a mated pair with the following time maybe.
Byakko wanted Kazuma to be his partner.
He choose the human out of many points, one was
surely that the human could go along cats that well.
His species where more complicated as anything
else, the most yokai knew that.

Cats where proud, strong and capricious,
complicated, loved to play nasty tricks and where extremely playful.
He was no exception of this rule.
Tiger, as such himself, were even harder to
please and normally they haut alone and without company.
Byakko was also again, no exception of this rule;
more so, he hated it to be caged inside the damned castle of the four saint
beasts!
Byakko could play in a team very well but he
hated betrayal as nothing else and so it was no wonder that his first target in
hell was the ice demon that had betrayed him so easily.

His soul would need a looong time to recover!

But the human Kazuma was a different story; he
was brave, honoured and a team player. He even would not back away from
scarifying his live, if needed to save the others. Byakko was sure under a
little lead, this ningen could be a perfect partner for him�and more.
For now, all he had to do was to get the human
to be his partner.

Kazuma was woken up from the rough hand on his
shoulder that shakes him slightly.
Without to think first the human draw his
spirit sword and fast got up to prevent himself from harm.
With the last years it happened more as one
time that some nasty yokai or humans alike tried to harm him, even in his own
home.
Kazuma sometimes missed it to have his sister
near, since she moved out of the siblings flat to live with Botan in another,
he saw her only once a week.
It made it easier for his enemies to get him
vulnerable and the last years had tired the youth out.
He reacted to situations like this
mostly on instinct, even if he asked himself at the moment who could have
sneaked around his senses to get so near!

The tension in his muscles faded instantly when
he spotted the large frame of the tiger yokai next to his bed. Slowly he came
back down from his panic state to plop finally down on his bed again.
The yokai�s eyes stopped every upcoming jell or
question, to Kazuma Byakko seems to understand him perfectly, seems to know
what was going on inside of him.
�Don�t do this again, please. I could hurt you
and I don�t want to do that.�
With that, Kazuma tried to calm down again.

�How often happens it that someone wakes you up
like this?�
The tiger was curios; he knew the youth had not
sensed him before, because he was part of his little household now.

�Often, mostly at night but lately they stopped
it a little so I could get some sleep.�
Kazuma looked quizzically at the much taller demon;
he was not as tall as he knew him from before but near to that enough.
The tiger was in his *normal* human shape by
now and seem to thing over his words, with a nod the white and black striped
yokai asked him the next question,
�Why do you not have a partner?�

Kazuma was flabbergasted for seconds; he knew
extremely well what this meant to yokai.
In their standards it meant nearly the same as
to be married. Mates, they were a different story. No one tried to hurt a mated
pair, but partners where the nearest thing to that and so, highly rare.
From Byakko�s point of view it was only natural
to ask this he realised but for a human?
And he was human, Kazuma knew the yokai was up
to something and so he changed his tactic and asked instead the yokai why he
asked and what was going on here.

An hour later, Kazuma tried to sort out what he
just heard from the calm demon beside of him on the bed. Both seem to be deep
in thought.
Byakko knew the human knew what he suggested
with this all. The ningen was not dense! He had known it all the time, a little
careless and stubborn, of course but not dense!
He was a warrior, a fighter a guardian type of
a person but not an idiot. Kazuma Kuwabara had abilities to grow into something
special with the time. Hell, he even was it now!

He left the human a few minutes to sort the
things alone together before he addresses him again.
With a sly smirk he offered the human fighter
what he had always wanted him to be, to be his partner.
Byakko knew fairly well, it would take some
time for the ningen to get used to all of this and so he skipped some parts of
this for now.
To his utter surprise, his human seemed not to
mind this idea to much.

This night, Kazuma Kuwabara slept peacefully
and fully save under Byakko�s protection.

The next two months where filled up with
missions for the two from Koenma and his father. Mostly dangerous ones and
mostly the two found themselves back to carry the other out of a dangerous
ground.
All the time the human partner of the tiger
made sure as hell that Byakko was saved and well treaded when he got injured as
he did the same to Kazuma.
Not long after this was discovered from other
yokai, they where more attacked as before.
The Makai mused slowly over their strange nearness
all the time and soon it was spread that the two could maybe be partners.

In this time the tiger made his way slowly to
his ningen partner, each step in time.
Kazuma responded to this all more and more. So
it was no wonder when the two began more and more often to share their personal
spaces.
One was ever awake of the two. The other Reikei
Tantei, the new ones of Koenma seem to be disgusted of their behave and so,
Kazuma found himself more as one time back to tell them to shut up and leave
them the hell alone!
Many yokai made nasty jokes about this, but
never about the seemingly partners. Only their companions found themselves
often back on the wrong end of their jokes.

Byakko reacted a little more violent as his
partner in crime, often it was Kazuma and the only silent one in the group who
had their hands full of tiger yokai when they had to hold him back from tearing
the others in half.
The newest member of the new Tantei was the
former assassin Kaname Hagiri who had to clean his slate in Reikei with this
work.
He was mostly to be found, sitting next to the
partners and was also it mostly who held their backs free when the other three
failed or got sidetracked.

With the time, Kazuma began to feel more for
his yokai companion as he had formerly. Sure he had been scared to death when
he first saw the tiger in his taller form but then he had felt a kindred spirit
in the beast and so it was no wonder that he began to like his *partner* more
and more.
He missed dearly the friendship that had hold
them all together before, his old group was allot better he found!
He missed Kurama, Yusuke and Hiei dearly each
and every day. He missed his friends!

The only ones he could trust now where Byakko
and to his surprise, Hagiri.
But more and more often his thoughts drifted to
more disturbing naughty ones when he watched the tiger fight or only watch the
others with an annoyed look.
He began slowly to find out why partnerships in
the Makai where so intense for their members.
Not that Kazuma mind it much. It was more that
he could not shake of the thought that this would lead him to other problems,
if he really did this and let the yokai have him the way Byakko seemingly
wanted it.
Kazuma was confused as hell at this but somehow
he could not stop his hands from petting the sleeping yokai when he was hurt or
to prevent him from harm.

It happened more often as Kazuma liked it that
the tiger got seriously hurt in his tries to rescue him out of trouble or that
he got hurt in return and his own stupid tries to do that!
Even Koenma had lectured the two to watch out
more!
What an embarrassing situation!

One day found the odd group of humans and yokai
back in the deepness of Makai on one of their tasks.
They had killed a yokai who got a little too
powerful and crazy with that.
Now they where finished with this and could not
go back because the ferry girl needed to finish her other work first.

So the odd group settled in a hotel like place
at the next town and went to their rooms.
Again, the others did not care if their two
strongest fighters needed help. Hagiri shakes his head at the other three and
went to help the two, highly injured warriors to their room before he went down
to the bar again, he did not want to sleep in the same room with one of the
others.
He did not like them too much, just as Kazuma
and Byakko did it too.
Hagiri mostly slept at their place or near to
them two, but this time the room was too small for that and instead he went to
the bar to get a drink.

Now, fully alone with each other the two tried
to get some sleep.
Byakko was the first on their night watch and
so he did nothing other as to stay awake and watch for possible enemies to attack.
Jins suddenly appearing face out of the blue
let Kazuma jump high in the air with a curse,
�Holly shit! Jin!!! Don�t do that!!!�
That only earned him a chuckle of Touya who
stand beside the ex Sensui helper and watched the scene with him together.
A grumpy tiger demon was the following of this
event.

After some more minutes of talking, all three
decided to settle over in the larger room of the two Shinobi who where here
because they had worked in this area.
Much to the dismay of their team members who
lectured them that these two where not on their side.
Kazuma was too happy to even retort and fell,
right after Jin showed him a place to sleep in the larger room asleep.

Okay, it run away
with me again, I know.
I swear it, it was
an accident!
Who am I kidding?
Well three shot instead of two shot would sound better huh? Actually it will be
a four chapter story and that�s it.
I will ad the next
as fast I can, until then, keep me going and tell me if you liked it or if I
better hide this piece of insanity of me somewhere else.
