Chapter One:
Gently, the autumn wind blew past him and combed through Kurama’s red rose locks, making them dance upon the frosty breeze. He sat upon a wooden bench, under a tree filled with gold and red leaves as a young woman with raven hair sat quietly next to him with glasses framing her light blue eyes. She gazed curiously at Kurama, watching for any hint of emotion to play upon his features, but she noticed nothing but his deep look of contemplation.
“I’m glad you finally found some time to spend with your little sister from your big company.” Came the playful words of the raven haired woman who smiled with mirth. “Can’t say I like meeting in the cold much, though. But I’ll take whatever time I can get to spend with you.” She tugged on her black trench coat as if she was blocking out the chilly breeze.
“Sorry, Suki. We can still...” Kurama began.
“Nah. One, I don’t want your Shuiichi cult thinking I’m a girlfriend of yours because we’re sitting in your car and they don’t know I’m you’re little sister but I can‘t prove that through human blood tests. And two, it’s not that cold and three, you can’t drive your car in this area anyway.” Tsuki smiled then winked. “Your baby sister does use her brain sometimes.” She tapped her temple and laughed.
Kurama chuckled along with her, then smiled. “So how is school?” He asked.
Tsuki sent him a deadpan expression as if saying, “Seriously?” She then closed her eyes for a moment and let out a puff of air that appeared into the coldness. “Feh. School is....As usual for me. All my classes are dead and dull but I‘m keeping up.” She said, pursing her lips in mock irritation. “So, have you talked to.......Hiei?” Suki looked hopeful at her brother.
Kurama shook his head silently. “Not since he left the Human World.”
“Oh.” Tsuki replied a little sadly.
“....You can always ask Koenma to grant you access to......”
“No! I don‘t want to.” Tsuki snapped then pouted like a little child who couldn’t get any candy.
Kurama just looked at his sister knowing what was coming up next. She was going to whine again. She always did whenever it came to Hiei. Inwardly, he could feel a bead of sweat roll down the side of his face over his sister’s over dramatic theatrics about her and Hiei starting a....
“Family! Kurama! We were suppose to start a family! That spiky haired midget jerk!” Suki whined loudly, drawing attention from onlookers who walked by them in the park.
Kurama looked at the people nervously then scooted over and gave his sister a comforting hug and pat on the back. “Calm down, Suki-chan.” He whispered for a while until she began to calm down.
Wiping at her eyes, Tsuki sniffed and pulled away from Kurama. “Sorry...” She apologized. “Anyway, I’m not going to drag that multi-eyed gerbil back to the human world. The only reason he’ll come back is if Kaomi is in trouble. But, she isn’t.”
Kurama nod his head once, gazing off into the distance where he saw children run across a mound, giggling, laughing and a few rolling down the hill. He smiled inwardly at the children which warmed his heart and he also grinned a little on the outside.
“.....So how is Kaomi doing?” Kurama asked.
Staring at Kurama, Tsuki gave him a thoughtful look then shivered as the cold wind began to blow, making her dark tresses and Kurama’s red tresses dance about in the chilling wind.
Again, Kurama chuckled as the wind began to die down once more. “Perhaps we should take this reunion elsewhere that is more tolerable than the chilly outdoors.” He said, standing up and offering a hand for Tsuki to take.
“But...All right. Maybe we can stop by my apartment then? I was suppose to meet Kuwabara and Yusuke at home anyway and they’ll be happy to see you again.” Tsuki said as she grabbed Kurama’s hand and stood up with his help.
At the thought of seeing his comrades in a long time since the days of being Spirit Detectives, a small smile graced Kurama’s lips. Albeit he was nineteen now, but it seemed as if their departure had been at least ten years instead of a year and eight months. As he walked down the concrete path along with Tsuki bouncing in stride like an excited kid going to see their best friend to his car, Kurama couldn’t help but smile a bit more and wonder if Yusuke was still a delinquent, or if Kuwabara was still crushing over Yukina. However, his thoughts also wandered toward Kaomi. His sister hadn’t told him anything about her yet since he asked. Perhaps, he’ll find about her later.
Kurama parked his red sports sedan by the curve in front of a large simple white building, that could easily be seen as ten stories with many windows in view. At the top of the entrance read a simple black sign, written in cursive that read, “Haganata Apartments.”
Tsuki was the first to get out the car and walk to the entrance of the building, followed by Kurama. No sooner had the two walked inside, they were immediately greeted by Yusuke and Kuwbara who evidently ringing the doorbell to Tsuki’s room number.
“I hope you guys weren’t ringing my doorbell for an infinite amount of time.” Tsuki said, looking at Yusuke specifically.
Yusuke snorted at Tsuki, mumbling a “You’re late,” then glanced over at Kurama and smirked, walking over the flaming haired young man.
Tsuki stuck her tongue out at Yusuke.
“If it isn’t the infamous fox bandit to grace us with his presence?” Yusuke smiled at Kurama. “Long time no see fox boy. So how is life treating ya?” He asked, patting Kurama on the back.
“KURAMA!” Kuwabara yelled. “What the heck are you doing here?!”
Tsuki smacked the back of Kuwabara’s head. “He is my brother you know.” She growled, giving Kuwabara a fixed annoyed gaze.
“Heh!” Kuwabara yelled, mostly out of being taken out of surprise by Suki’s slap rather than the sharp sting to the back of his cranium the slap created.
Kurama chuckled. “It has been a long time since we last seen each other when we worked for Koenma. Suki insisted that I come to her apartment today to see you and Kuwabara. But, I’ve been quite busy taking over my father’s job for him and helping mother around the house.”
“Anyway, guys, can we take this to my apartment instead of in the lobby, please?” Tsuki said as she began to ascend the steps to her room.
All three of the men looked at Tsuki, then at each other before they started to climb the stairs as they followed Tsuki to her apartment, either talking about the present days or the old days and Tsuki simply rolled her eyes as she too remembered a few prized moments in their history as Spirit Detectives, though she was never a Spirit Detective and chose to work for Koenma, whether he asked her to or not, as long as her brother or....Hiei were tied into the job as well.
Inside Tsuki’s apartment, the main room or the dining room’s walls were a soft eggshell white color while the floor was a smooth polished laminated hardwood. The room was spacious and lightly decorated with warm earthy brown leather couches that aligned the walls to the corner in an “L” shape, facing a 42” plasma screen television set that sat on top of a short teak desk under a painting of a gray kitty in a worn away box. On the right of the television was a door that possibly lead to another room. Unfortunately, the door was closed to anyone’s eye sight.
Kuwabara and Kurama sat on the couch with Tsuki in the middle, while Yusuke leant up against the wall instead looking at the three as they talked.
“I still can’t get over Yusuke being engaged...I thought Keiko was going dump him for sure.” Tsuki said, but Yusuke snorted in response then looked away as if he was a little annoyed yet he was secretly trying to hide a hint of pink that snuck up on his cheeks.
“Awwww, is Yusuke embarrassed?” Kuwabara teased.
“Shut-up Kuwabara.” Yusuke glared at the orange haired man on the couch, his fist ready to clobber him at any given moment.
“So have you thought about popping any questions to Yukina, Kuwabara?” Tsuki asked.
“I, uh....Well, I......We’re taking things slow to test the undeniable love we have for each other. Yukina, my love....I will wait forever for you.” Kuwabara proclaimed, his small black orbs burning with passion and determination.
Tsuki blinked then laughed, while Yusuke shook his head and Kurama gave an uncomfortable chuckle. He wasn’t a surprise Kuwabara replied the way he did, but it mostly ended up as a dramatic delusion.
Kuwabara then crossed his arms and closed his eyes as if he was in deep contemplation when everyone knew he was thinking about Yukina. He was very typical of him to do so.
“Suki, I’ve been meaning to ask you, but how is Kaomi doing?” Kurama asked suddenly.
Yusuke and Kuwabara looked at Kurama and then at Tsuki who blinked and scratched the shell of her ear.
“Um, Kaomi is fine. You know, working and helping her mom and all....” Suki answered, oddly sounding a bit awkward from her usual cheery persona. “She’s been busy with school and helping Aki-san with the family tea house. Ya know. Being Kaomi.” Suki added then smiled at her brother.
Kurama instantly knew his sister was trying to hide something from him from the way she answered. Normally, she wouldn’t stutter and repeat herself and that made him that much more curious.
Kuwabara and Yusuke just watched Kurama and Tsuki in silence until they couldn’t take the quiet atmosphere any longer.
“That’s it. I’m getting something to drink if any decides to say something.” Yusuke said suddenly then marched on past Kurama and Tsuki to the kitchen.
Kuwabara glanced up at Yusuke for a moment then decided he wanted to leave as well. “Uh, I’m a little hungry myself. I think I‘ll raid the fridge.” He said, then stood up and followed the Spirit Detective.
Once Yusuke and Kuwabara left the room, Tsuki who let out a sigh and looked her brother dead in the eyes. If she knew her brother well enough, she knew she couldn’t hide anything from him. Especially if it had anything to do with herself, Hiei or Kaomi. Luckily, Kurama wasn’t the type to press on an issue if it was sensitive, but Tsuki couldn’t hide anything from him. He was, after all her elder sibling.
“All right, Kurama.” Tsuki began. “What I have to say will not be a pleasant thing for you to hear but as my brother, I owe you the truth.” She said.
Kurama simply nod his head. “I appreciate it Suki.”
For a moment, Tsuki closed her eyes, breathed deeply and opened them again; her blue orbs focused on his green ones. “Kaomi is married now.” Tsuki confessed. She watched Kurama’s reaction carefully and stood almost perfectly still.
Kurama’s face was void of any emotion while his hair shadowed his eyes, but he looked away from Tsuki and leaned forward, using his elbows to support his head upon his knees. “....Who did she marry?” He spoke.
Tsuki was starting to think confessing was a bad idea, but she couldn’t change the fact that what she said was true, even if she knew that Kurama and Kaomi once held affections for each other. They never dated or anything, but everyone knew that the two had very strong feelings for the other. Unfortunately, neither made the first move to become a couple for reasons of their own.
“She married Shane Neko.” Tsuki responded.
Kurama kept quiet, his eyes shadowed by his red tresses. The silence was so uncomfortable that Tsuki began to fidget on the couch and blinking rapidly waiting for Kurama to say something. Just when Suki couldn’t take anymore of the silence, she noticed a beeping sound go off and Yusuke and Kuwabara walked into the room with Yusuke holding what looked like a small black cell-phone with an image of Koenma popping up on the ear piece.
“I knew I grabbed the wrong phone. What’s up diaper breath?” Yusuke asked casually.
Tsuki blinked at the contraption. “Koenma?”
“Hey, Koenma.” Kuwabara greeted, looking a bit bewildered that Yusuke’s phone where Koenma showed up on the ear piece.
Koenma, still in his classic toddler form scoffed at Yusuke. “Anyway, we have a real crisis on our hands, Yusuke. I need you to go to Moto Teahouse this instant.”
“That’s Kaomi’s teahouse. Why there? What’s going on?” Yusuke asked.
“I’ll explain on the way there. Just hurry. You don‘t have much time. Now get going!” Koenma rushed.
