Chapter 2: Realization
Warmth surrounded you as consciousness took over your dream like state. You snuggled into the warm for a moment, before realizing you were lying down, and on a soft bed for that matter. Your eyes blinked several times before they were fully open. You shifted and looked up at the ceiling.
'It was just a dream.' You thought, giving a sigh.
However, you blinked up at the ceiling, noticing something different about the color. You took in a deep breath and found a smell of sweat and cinnamon, a smell you didn’t recognize from your bed. Your bed normally smelled like fruit, from your shampoo and soap.
Your arms were still around Kouga as you sat up, your blanket falling into your lap. You looked around, eyes wide.
‘This isn’t my room.' you thought. ‘It does look familiar, though.'
The color was a white, though it seemed more so from the light coming from the open window, which was more like a sliding glass door then anything else. The bed was positioned near the window, the curtains able to touch the end of the bed the head of the bed facing the window. Posters of Megalica and other heavy punk rock bands, as well as some baseball posters surrounded the room.
You gasped.
‘This is Kuwabara’s room!" You thought, an episode from the first season of the Four Saint Beasts coming to mind.
You sat there, in awe at how much Kuwabara’s room looked a little different from in the show; the room seeming a bit bigger. You looked out the window, realizing you were on the second floor of the building. A light tingle feeling in the back of your neck caused you to shiver.
‘That feels familiar.' you thought before your eyes turn from the rooftops of the other buildings and to Kuwabara’s balcony.
‘Oh wait, I know where I’ve felt this, it was back where I met Kuwabara, that's right! I can sense Yusuke and Botan! They must be outside looking at me.' you thought, smiling, before it disappeared and you continued to stare, now in thought.
‘How long have I been out? This is so weird. I can’t believe it.' You pinched your self and found that it hurt.
‘This is real! Shit! What am I going to do now? I don’t even know how far into the series I slept! What am I going to do? I better try and figure out something to tell Kuwabara, until it’s the right time to tell him and the other characters.'
Kuwabara was deep in thought as well, and didn’t notice that you weren't still asleep. He blinked and looked towards the window sensing a presence there as well; and in doing so noticed, you were awake.
“Hey sleeping beauty awakes! What ya looking at?” Kuwabara asked, walking over to his window and looking out the open balcony window.
You couldn’t help but blush from the complement, and were glad he wasn’t looking at you to notice it. Kuwabara looked hard out, knowing too well who that presence was. However, he continued to look, more so in thought then actually looking for his rival.
After you got your self in order, you glanced at him, the sun light of the setting sun, taking your breathe away as his profile was out lined with the sun’s golden rays. You shook your head, clearing it of what was attempting to enter you mind. You had other thoughts you needed to think about.
‘Shit, what am I going to do? I figured I had some more time to think up an excuse, well let me find out how far I am into the show.' You thought.
“How long have I been sleeping?” you asked.
“Three days, you were really tired.” Kuwabara said, turning to look at you with a serious look on his face.
“So,” Kuwabara started, walking over to his desk that was across from the bed, he turned the chair around. “…tell me a little bit about yourself.
Kuwabara sat with his legs around the back of the chair and rested his head on his arms that were folded over each other on top of the chair’s backrest.
“I mean, it’s only fair I know at least some stuff about you, since you’ve been sleeping in my bed for three days, not that I mind, it’s just its kind of weird.' Kuwabara said.
Kuwabara gave you a look that you couldn’t quiet place, having never seen it on his face before, though you hadn’t watched all of the episodes, so you weren’t sure if he ever had this look on him before.
He wasn’t sure what he should do. In the past three days, he had been thinking about everything he knew about you and all that he didn’t. He had many questions, but didn’t know if he should just ask you or just wait until you felt ready to tell him. However, he figured, with what he knew that it would be better to let you tell him in time.
Besides that, he was in too much pain from the beatings he had been receiving from every single punk he beat up in the past three years and maybe even from his previous life, not to mention the lack of sleep he was receiving from doing two days straight of studying. He was going to out wit that rat face of a teacher, and he wouldn’t let anything distract him. Not to mention he had a strange girl sleeping in his room, let alone his bed. He knew that after the week was up and he gave all those punks the beatings they deserved, he would have time to ponder this new situation.
You looked into his brown eyes, a bit surprised that they were not blue like you had thought, and noticed bags under them, not to mention bruises and cuts around them, and on other spots on his face. You glanced to the side of Kuwabara and noticed a few books, one having a library card sticking out of it all the books labeled Science or Basic Science.
‘I’m still in the third episode. That teacher must have already given the second challenge, by the looks of all the books.' You thought. ‘What should I tell him though, now that I know where in the series I am, what should I tell him.'
You continued to think, your eyes still looking into Kuwabara’s, who seemed to also be lost in thought. A smile crossed your lips as an idea came to mind.
‘I know! Thank God for my acting classes I took in high school.' You thought, not noticing Kuwabara was still spacing out.
The idea you had was an idea from a movie you had seen, though you forgot what movie it was from. The idea was to pretend to have amnesia, though one where you only know your name, age, location, and current events.
You placed your hand to your head, to add to the effect as if you were trying to remember something.
“Unh...I can’t seem to really remember. I do remember is I use to live in the United States sometime and that my name is (Your_Full_Name) and that I am 14 years old...everything else...” you said, closing your eyes, and pressing your palms to your eyes, adding more to the effect. “Everything else is fuzzy.”
You had decided that going back to school wouldn’t be sooo bad the second time, especially if it was with Kuwabara and Yusuke, though you made your self 16 so you wouldn’t have to go to school for TOO long. You thought it would be fun, but you weren’t so bored were you would do the four years instead of two.
“Well,” Kuwabara said, after giving you a critical look. “What’s the last thing you DO remember?”
You remove your palms from your eyes and look at him.
“Ummm well, I remember watching TV,” you said, deciding to use some of the truth in your little white lie.
You didn’t like lying, so you decided to use truth and fiction to create a believable story.
“…and then I heard a noise before there was a flash and then the next thing I knew, I was in the middle of the sidewalk in my Pjs.” you said with a blush.
Kuwabara seemed to be studying you, calculating what you had said, before giving a nod. He seemed to realize something, by the look on his face.
“Wait, I thought you said you were 5 years older then me?” Kuwabara said.
Kuwabara made it a point to remember what others said. He figured that if he kept close attention to what others said he could use it for later use or figured that it could be important for later use.
‘Shit! forgot that! I got to learn to keep my cool next time.' You thought.
Impressed that you were with Kuwabara’s memory, you were still disappointed in yourself for losing your cool as quickly as you did.
“Oh, well....I was just upset and I didn’t know how old you were so I just used the first number that came into my head.” You said.
You held your breath, knowing that everything else you had said was a long shot for Kuwabara to believe, but this one right here was something that you were really taking a risk with. Your fingers were crossed under your blanket, praying that he wouldn’t see right through you and believe you. Luck was on your side, since Kuwabara nodded in understanding. However, he didn’t seem to really care about the age difference, having something else on his mind.
“I understand." He said. “I’m sorry about the ‘little girl' comment. So about your memory, you have amnesia or something?”
You nodded.
Kuwabara gave you another critical look, causing you to think that maybe Kurama took lessons from Kuwabara. Without warning, Kuwabara stood up and left the room. You sat on the bed, blinking at where Kuwabara once sat, before turning your eyes towards the open door that lead out of his room. Before you could even process what happened, Kuwabara came back into the room carrying some clothes. He handed you some black pants and a long white shirt, though it was long on you.
“Here. These are my sis’s. I know she won’t mind you borrowin' ‘em until we get you some cloths.” He said.
You looked at the clothes and then back up at him.
“Don’t worry about a place to stay. I don’t mind havin' a roomie for a while. You can stay here until you get yer memories back.” Kuwabara said with a smile.
You looked up at him, blinking. You were stunned at how generous he was, but snapped out of it and gave him a smile.
“Thanks.” You said.
Kuwabara smiled at you before turning and leaving the room, letting you know that you could change in his room.
Once he left, you stood up to change. You froze in the middle of taking off your shirt, remembering the figure outside the open window. You put the shirt back on and ran to the window, closing it before closing the curtains. You turned around, face red, from both anger and embarrassment.
‘If he spies on me I’ll give him such a beating when he comes back, that he would wish he was dead!' you thought.
You let out a breath, calming down, before going back to changing out of your pjs into the clothes Kuwabara had given you. Once changed, you folded your clothes and carried them out of the room, looking for Kuwabara. Your stomach growled, indicating you were hungry, which wasn’t too surprising since you hadn’t eaten in three days.
“Now, where’s the kitchen?” you think aloud as you look down the hallway.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A few minutes earlier, out side the window, Yusuke and Botan watched you give your explanation to Kuwabara, who believed it to Yusuke’s surprise.
“Amnesia, huh? Doesn’t look like it. How can someone forget everything about themselves but not their name and age?! It makes no sense! I think (YLN)-san's up to something.” He said, narrowing his eyes at you.
Botan turned to him.
“It could happen, actually.” Botan said.
Yusuke looked at her surprised.
“Really?”
“Uh huh.” Botan said, reaching into her komodo and taking out a small red book that had ‘Unusually Cases” on the cover.
“There have been several cases like hers where the person can only remember current events or even their name, age, and location. Sometimes it happens the other way around, as if they can’t remember anything from day to day. These amnesia cases usually happen after a traumatic event, or even after a traumatic accident.” Botan said closing the book and putting it back into her sleeve.
“So you must have some kind of accident that was so traumatic that you doesn’t want to remember her past and only remembers from after the accident.” Botan said, turning a sad look towards you.
Yusuke looked at Botan before turning his attention back to you, a thoughtfully look crossing his face.
“Oh.”
It was here was he noticed Kuwabara left the room. Yusuke’s eyes wandered to you and noticed you standing up. His eyes widened as his mouth dropped when he could see the upper part of your back, and since you didn’t sleep with a bra on, meant you were half naked under your PJs; having boxers that had Scooby-Doo on them underneath your pants.
“What the heck is she doing?!” he shouted.
He froze when you pulled your shirt back on and turned around, seeming to be looking right at him. He eeped and jumped backwards as he saw a death look sent straight at him.
“Damn it, she sees us!” he said.
“I told you before that she can’t, she can just sense us!” said an annoyed Botan.
Yusuke gulped as he watched you storm over to the window, closing it and the curtains.
He gave a sigh of relief and of disappointment, being the pervert that he was, he wouldn’t have mind seeing a little more skin.
“Well there’s nothing else to see here, why don’t we check in on Kekio.” said Yusuke.
He flew off towards Keiko’s house.
“Wait up Yuskue.” called Botan before she followed behind him.
She wanted to keep a close eye on him. He was supposed to be taking care of that egg and only give it good vibes. However the way things were going, him being the pervert he was, it seemed he would most likely be eaten by a horrible beast.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eventually you found the stairs, after finding two other rooms to the upstairs and a bathroom. You came down the steps and found the front door was a few feet from where the steps ended. You turned to your right and there was what looked to be a small living room, only having a couch, a love seat to fit two, a small coffee table, and a decent size TV.
You stepped off the step and walked towards a light that shone from another room that seemed to be under the master bedroom, which was next to Kuwabara’s room. A table and chairs indicated that the area a little way from the couch was the dinning room, meaning the kitchen wasn’t too far. You peeked into the open door way, that didn’t have a door, and found a small, yet decent size kitchen.
To your left was a counter that lined the kitchen wall from the door to the end of that wall and half way across the next wall, only stopping because of the Refrigerator. Kuwabara was in the Freezer, above the Refrigerator, searching for his dinner. He pulled out a Hungry Man dinner and closed the door to the Freezer.
“Hungry?” Kuwabara asked, startling you.
He didn’t look at you as he started to prepare his TV dinner.
“Yeah.” You said, taking a few steps into the kitchen, and finding the floor a little cold.
You shiver slightly, and hold your folded clothes against your chest. You looked down and realized you still had your clothes.
“You can leave your clothes on the chair over there.” Kuwabara said, pointing fast to a chair that was next to you.
You looked at it and found a small table accompanied it as well as another chair; the small set not upsetting the kitchen even in its small size. You nodded before saying a thank you and placed your clothes on the chair.
“You want one?” he asked, going back to the Freezer.
“Sure what kind do you have?” you asked, walking up behind him towards the Fridge.
He moved to the side enough for you to look in at the different varieties of TV dinners.
“Plenty, my sister isn’t big on cooking and I’m not too big of a fan of it either, so we get different varieties.” he said.
You nodded, understanding, also coming from a family that wouldn’t have too many ‘family dinners' together. It wasn’t, as you couldn’t cook. It also wasn’t, as you didn’t get along with your mom and brother. Between your weird working hours and your brother going to high school and your mother working during the day, there really wasn’t any time to spend time with each other and have a ‘dinner' together.
You looked at your choices and reached for one of your favorite TV dinners. You took it out and looked at it. It was a Chicken Breast dinner that had corn, mash potatoes on the side and a brownie for desert. Kuwabara closed the door.
He turns to you, with a smile, though it disappears when you put your dinner on the table and take a seat. You had decided that he should cook his dinner first.
“Aren’t you gonna cook yours first?” he asked.
You look at him.
“I’ll wait until you cook yours.”
He gave you a funny look before taking your dinner off the table and walked over to where his spare rib entrée, with a side of mixed vegetables, mashed potatoes, and an apple cobbler for desert was and prepared your dinner.
“Hey!” you said, standing up.
“You haven’t eaten in three days and should eat first.” He said poking holes in the mash potatoes before opening up the microwave and sticking your TV dinner in for the time it said on the box.
You blinked, not expecting him to say that, not to mention cook your dinner for you.
Kuwabara went back to his dinner, a small blush on his face.
‘This is so awesome! I’m gonna eat dinner with a beautiful girl, who’s gonna stay at my house! Sure (YLN)-san's weird and got some issues, but still! The guys are sooo not gonna believe me!” Kuwabara thought, his famous cocky grin on his face.
You lost interest in watching the back of Kuwabara head while he worked on his own TV dinner, wondering why it was taking him so long to finish his dinner. You looked around and figured you should set up the table, so you looked in some of the cabinets, looking for plates and cups. On the second try, you found some and look for some forks and knives, finding them in the drawer that was directly under where you found the plates. You grabbed some of the napkins from the small table in the kitchen and set up the table in the dinning room/living room.
You looked over to the microwave, finding your food being taken out and Kuwabara’s put in.
“Dinner’s up!” Kuwabara announced turning to you with a grin.
“Great!” you said.
Kuwabara left your meal on the table while you brought your plate over to put the hot plastic container on it.
“There’s drinks in the fridge.” Kuwabara said, while opening up the fridge. “What do ya want?”
“What do you have?” You asked, after bringing your plate over to the table and setting it down.
”Soda, water, OJ,” Kuwabara started.
”A regular soda sounds good.” You answer with a smile.
Kuwabara takes out a plain can of soda and a container of OJ.
You went back to your seat and poured your drink into the cup you had set out. Kuwabara leaned up against the counter, watching his dinner spin around and around. You sat down and started to sip your drink, not willing to eat until his dinner was done. You sighed, not liking the silence and decided to make a conversation.
“So,” you started, catching Kuwabara’s attention, who looked at you, "What happened to your face? It looks like someone ate you, chewed you out and repeated the process three more times?”
You had been told that your attitude was blunt, rude, and un ‘lady like' behavior, and many times had been called ‘Yusuke' from your friends who knew of the show and/or people who just knew the show. You were always a tomboy, which annoyed your mother to no end. You wanted you to become a young lady and grow up being successful, yet still keeping your feminine side. However, you didn’t think that would happen anytime soon, and in order to keep in line with the story you had told, you had to ask questions; even if you knew the answers to them.
Kuwabara glared at you.
“What’s that suppose to mean?!” he shouted.
He gave him self a mental slap, and sighed.
“Sorry, I just recently lost someone close to me and you kind of remind me of him.” He said, not looking at you.
Kuwabara was reminded of Urameshi with that comment you had made, and even though he wouldn’t admit it aloud, he had thought of his arch rival as something more then a goal, but maybe a friend, someone he could look up too and try and be, for the good traits and learn from his bad ones. Urameshi was his idol, which no one, not even his friends could understand.
You felt a pain go through your heart.
‘I hurt him with that comment. I guess my friends are right, I do act like Yusuke sometimes.' You think and then feel another pain, remembering your friends, though few they were.
“I’m sorry.” You said.
It was at this moment Kuwabara’s dinner finished, a clear, loud beeping echoing in the room, or so it seemed; because of the awkward silence. Kuwabara walked over to the table and picked up his plate and brought it back to where the microwave was, putting his dinner on the plate, with out burning him self. You watched him lick his fingers from removing the plastic from the container before throwing the plastic away in the trash next to the table in the kitchen.
Kuwabara walked over to the table, licking his fingers still, while his other hand held the plate. Kuwabara set his plate on the table and sat down. He looked at you and then at your plate.
“You could have started with out me.” Kuwabara said, pointing to your plate.
“I know, but it’s rude.” You said, with a weak smile.
Kuwabara thought about that and nodded, agreeing. The two of you started to eat in silence, when, once again the silence got to you.
“So,” you started, taking a sip of your soda. “…what did happen?”
Kuwabara sighed, taking another sip of his orange juice.
“Remember when me and my friends beat up those other guys three days ago?” he waits for you to nod before he continued.
“Well the cry babies told their mommies, who called my school. My stupid teacher, who loves to make my life a living hell, told me I can’t fight for a week, or my friend Okubo would lose his job. So now every one of my enemies found out that I can’t fight and are using it against me.”
You looked at him.
‘He’s sticking to his promise. No doubt, he’ awesome.” you thought, remembering his promise he had made to Okubo, about not telling anyone that he needed the job to support the family since his mother was out of work.
“I’m sorry. I can beat him up for ya if you want?” you said, teasing.
Kuwabara stared at you and then noticed the smirk on your face.
“I would love to see that.” Kuwabara said, with a cocky grin.
You started to eat.
“So what else do you have to do for this guy, you know? I doubt its just not being able to fight for a week.” you asked.
Kuwabara started to eat as well.
“Well,” Kuwabara started, taking a sip of his orange juice. “…I gotta pass a science test, which isn’t one of my best subjects, heck none of them are my best subjects. Well, maybe except gym, but that’s ‘cause you don’t really hafta do anything.” Kuwabara said, before stuffing in some mashed potatoes.
You started to laugh at that, and the two of you started to eat for a few minutes, both starving. It wasn’t too long that the two of you were done, both stuffed.
“Well,” you said, taking a sip from your soda. “I would be glad to help you with your science test. I can help you study. Science is one of my best subjects! Science and history, I suck at math, so don’t even think about help there.” You laughed.
Kuwabara’s eyes seemed to light up at that.
“Really?! Oh, thank you! I really need help with it! I’ve been studying for the past two days!”
You smiled at him.
“No problem. When do you want to start?”
He picked up his and your dish and put them in the sink.
“How’s right now?”
“Ok” you said.
The two of you took your drinks and walked up stairs, Kuwabara explaining what exactly he was stuck with and not understanding. When you got into his room, the two of you went to his desk; you pulled over a stool and sat next to him, looking over at the book he had opened. You blushed slightly at how close the two of you were, but it soon disappeared as you turned your focus on helping Kuwabara understand the material in front of him.
This went on for three hours before a yawn came from the both of you. You were happy to see that Kuwabara had seemed to understand the material, and could see where he was having problems with what chemical was in what substance.
“Ok, that’s good for tonight, now time for sleep. Since I’m up, you can have your bed back.” You said, standing up and stretching.
You sighed and walked over to his bed, picking up your blanket and Kouga.
“No you can have it; I’m starting to like the couch anyway.” Kuwabara said, standing up and stretching himself.
You knew that he had lied, but you decided not to push. You knew that when Kuwabara made up his mind, then that was it.
You bowed.
“Thank you.” You said a smile on your face.
He smiled back. Kuwabara turned around and looked through his drawer for a few moments before turning back to you with a long blue shirt and baggy blue pants for you to sleep in. You took them from him.
“My sis is doin' the wash tomorrow, so I’ll throw your stuff in with mine.” Kuwabara said.
Kuwabara turned back to his drawer and grabbed a shirt and boxers for him self.
He closed the drawer and turned to leave.
“Are you going to sign up for school tomorrow.” He asked as he stood in the doorway, turned towards you.
You could tell he really wanted you there with him, probably because you reminded him of Yusuke.
“No problem. I’ll get my uniform tomorrow.” You said with a smile, hugging the clothes he gave you.
He smiled at you and left.
