Thank you, reviewers!
Steph8503: Not to worry, I may not update fast, but I always finish what I start.
Tiffany: o.O you just called three bloodthirsty demons “cute.” ….. I like how you think.^^
shade shadow: yeah, I wanted more material with demon!Yusuke, so I made it myself.
Juxxy: yeah, I watched the whole show through in one week … Yusuke is a lot different at the end than in the beginning. And every time he levels up, we get these cuts of K&H going “OMGWTFBBQ!!1!” That just has Yaoi written all over it.
Anon: Oh, the plot will be *interesting.* Myehehehehe.
Cherry: No, no lemon yet. It’ll be pretty obvious when.
Rei: I won’t give away Yusuke’s reaction, but I will say that I don’t do angst. ~_^
Katonie: Hi there! I’m impressed that you’re so impressed. ^^ I aim to please.
Kei-chan: thanks for joining us. I hope you like the rest of this … thing.
In this chapter: Hiei vs Mukuro, Kurama vs Yomi, sefiru vs canon. (most of the dialogue is from episodes 100+ of the anime.)

Chapter 2: Things Not Said
***
Mukuro thought she had him all figured out. True, she was canny enough to catch his lies when he said he had nothing to live for, but she was way off base on what she thought was the truth. She was so much like him in many ways, similar origins, similar history, similar ways of dealing with her pain, close enough that she understood him like few others did. But in the end, like most people, she saw only what she wanted to see; it was painfully obvious what she desired.
“It’s not hatred – it’s longing. You just want to belong to something!” Arrogant – she flung those tidbits at him across the battlefield as if they were stunning revelations, not things he’d figured out years ago. He could understand the arrogance; as one of the Makai Lords, she had a right to it. He just couldn’t stand how Mukuro was unaware of her own blindness, when most of her powers revolved around reading people’s thoughts and memories. Seduced by their commonalities, perhaps, she’d been in his head and completely missed that he’d already found his safe haven.

“Are you sure you want to trust me?” The gate of Betrayal’s stone ceiling pressed down on him, beading his skin with sweat. “I’ve already vowed my revenge on you. Maybe I’ll handle that now.”
Usually people reacted to such words with anger and disgust, so he was beyond shocked when those big brown eyes looked back at him with neither. “Yeah, but I don’t think quick deaths are your style … just don’t trip.”
He gaped blankly at the human while the orange-haired tagalong cursed him in the background. What was this Yusuke Urameshi thinking? What did he want? Brown eyes met his. “I trust you. Now go!”
Hiei went.

Yusuke was the first person to really see him, and accepted and trusted him in spite of that. Mukuro saw only what she wanted for herself. So his mind felt like home to her, did it? She’d never stopped to ask what her mind felt like to him.
“Touch my mind and you will no longer be empty.” And she would no longer be empty, that meant. It was pathetic, watching her grope so desperately for a connection without realizing she was only reaching for her own reflection.
“You obviously have the Jagan for a reason. All I want you to do is use it to find what you’ve been looking for.” Right, now she was out-and-out fantasizing. She thought he was looking for her? She tried to buy him with the tear gem that was rightfully his anyway; she took off her clothes in front of him – wasn’t that subtle. He wasn’t aware at the time, but the Jagan saw and remembered. Too bad for Mukuro he had no interest in women. Too bad for her that she was wasting her time telling him what he wanted.

He bounded through the trees to Genkai’s temple, watching the ki sources in front of him. Kurama had informed him of Yusuke’s departure to the Makai to take his place as Raizen’s heir; Hiei had this one chance to warn the young Demon Lord of his involvement before things got interesting.
He leapt down into the clearing, landed on one knee as usual, but stayed down a good second longer than necessary. That was his declaration. Yusuke saw, and his instincts understood; Kurama, lurking in the bushes, certainly noticed. Genkai and yukina probably picked up on it too, though they wouldn’t know who it was for. And of course the gesture went over Kuwabara’s head entirely.
The oaf predictably exploded on hearing their plans, especially when Hiei mentioned the part about the rematch. He ranted at them for not following his own simple-minded code, but Hiei didn’t care. The man whose opinion he valued had no worry in his eyes. “Kurama, Hiei, see you on the flip side.”

Hiei stood square on the arena floor and slowly unwrapped the wards from his dragon. He usually wasn’t so theatrical about it … but Yusuke was watching. He was about to make his best shot and he wanted the Toushin to notice.
“Dragon of the Darkness Flame!” The great beast hurled itself at Mukuro, but he did not intend it to kill. He had no real inerest in winning the tournament; however, he could pull Mukuro’s teeth and keep her from advancing. He watched as Mukuro grappled the dragon, first forcing its jaws open and then tearing it apart. It was done; he’d lost the battle, but won the war. Mukuro landed in front of him.
“Don’t tell me the only purpose you have for living now is someday defeating me. I don’t think I could bear that.”
“No, Mukuro, you’ve just missed the point.” Several points, in fact. Now that Mukuro’s youki wasn’t holding them together, her shackles cracked and fell off. His dragon had been striking at them through the whole battle. “Now you can leave your hatred in the past, where it belongs.” How wise she thought she was – she believed she had taught him something today. In truth she was still stuck in the darkness, imagining that only someone like her could understand her. That her experience was so foreign to all society that nobody cold accept them. Hiei knew better. “There are things in the future that are worth living for. Both for you and for me.” The dragon’s hibernation caught up with him, and he was asleep before he started to fall.
***
Yomi was going to be a problem, Kurama could see that. While Mukuro ruled through sheer strength and intimidation, the goat demon preferred the subtler routes of cunning, manipulation and blackmail. He had matured a lot from the foolhardy youth whom Kurama had had blinded, had grown sly enough to be a challenge. But if he thought he could outfox someone who was all fox … he needed another lesson.
For one thing, Yomi was unaware that Kurama had ulterior motives for acting as his advisor; in fact, he believed he had successfully blackmailed the fox into it by threatening his mother. It suited Kurama’s purpose to allow him to think so. What Yomi didn’t know was that Shiori Minamino’s treasured locket, which her son had given her as a birthday gift five years previous, contained the seeds of the Makai watchdog vine. If any demon attempted to harm her, they would suddenly find themselves facing a writhing fence of venomous, thorn-laden stems. Really, what fool would think Yoko Kurama failed to defend what he valued?
Yomi’s arrogance had lured him into yet another trap. He stood in his office smugly congratulating himself on outmaneuvering his former leader, not realizing that Kurama had allowed it. Not realizing he had “blackmailed” the fox into doing what he already wished to do. And there was no way he could know about Kurama and Hiei’s real intentions, since they had never spoken of them aloud, even to each other.
= = = = =
“This could throw the whole Makai into chaos.”
“Looks like things are about to get interesting.” Hiei stepped away and then added, “You can breathe, you know. I’m not going to help her.” ~You should know me better, Kurama. I promised my sword to Yusuke.~
Kurama relaxed as the Jagan touched him. “It will be useful to have a man on the inside.” ~I’ll keep Yomi distracted if you do the same to Mukuro.~ “Just be sure to collect plenty of information.”
“Don’t worry, I intend to take her for everything I can get.” ~ And have Alaric on a platter as my tribute. How do you intend to impress our Toushin? ~
= = = = =
Hiei scared him sometimes. Not just because of his intensity, but because he had a chance to steal Kurama’s greatest prize from under his nose. Yes, they had agreed to share, and they both had a place at Yusuke’s side, but their instincts drove them to compete for the privilege. And duels over mates were far from rare in the Makai. Still, Hiei had held up his end of the plan and kept Mukuro focused inward, just as Kurama did at Gandara. Between them they had probably stopped a premature attack on Tourin.
He’d had a remarkable amout of success at Gandara, actually. He’d managed to import a whole team of demons loyal to Yusuke without his hosts even noticing. He’d also disposed of Yomi’s previous second, a sanctimonious blockhead who couldn’t see through a simple bluff. Then again, there were few demons in the Makai willing to go as far for a bluff as Kurama did; even Yomi had fallen for it and thought he had lost his touch since taking human form.
It annoyed him when Yomi talked about getting “the real Kurama” back. Come to that, Kuwabara was the same way about his human body. They apparently thought he was two people: the Yoko, a cruel, ruthless fighter, and Shuichi, the goody-two-shoes milquetoast who was obsessed with his mother. Furthermore (and this was certainly a projection of their own prejudices), they assumed that his two sides must detest each other. What utter hogwash.
True, the fruit of past life had affected his memory strangely, and his past and present memories seemed to speak to each other. But there was continuity; he did not feel he was a different person, and therefore he was not. The only thing that had really changed was his priorities. Kurama had never been attached to cruelty for its own sake. He was a pragmatist; the end dictated the means, and for his current purposes – to be a good son, a good mate, an asset to the team – cruelty was worse than useless. If some demons failed to understand that, it was just another tool to use against them. Yusuke knew. So did Hiei.
= = = = =
“So, you have the infamous Chapter Black. I can only imagine what you could do with something like …”
“Dammit. My sword must have slipped.”
= = = = =
And now all their plans came to fruition as Yusuke faced off against Yomi and fought him to a standstill. He detonated ki blasts larger than most small missiles, walked out of the fireball unharmed – and shirtless, oh my! – squared off with Yomi again and raised a flare of – “What’s that?”
~ Sensui’s divine energy!~ he could hear the awe in Hiei’s Jagan voice, the mirror of his own. Yomi was a hair stronger in straight physical power but oh, their Toushin was glorious. He faced his own death and laughed; while he still stood, he would not yield. ~ Maybe the Detective understands honor after all. You’re lucky I like you, fox, you’re the only one I’ll share him with. ~
~ Likewise. ~

I like writing Kurama’s POV because I can use words like milquetoast and hogwash.
On Hiei’s flashback, above: in the episode where Yusuke leaves for the Makai, it really does look like Hiei is kneeling to someone when he makes his entrance. I know I’m reading too much into it, but … isn’t that true of all fanfic, ever? ^^;
Next chapter: More UST as our demons deal with another canon roadblock to this story: Keiko. Which I will then dispense with in five words (watch me.)
