I wept until my face was slick. Everything was pulling apart. My senses were poisoned. I was feverish, past inhibition, talking when it was wiser to be silent.
“My little boy,” the demonic human pet my face and head. “Isn’t it good, having a father?” “You’re nothing like him.” He grabbed me around the throat and I whimpered apologies. “Tell me you love me,” he grunted. Spittle sprayed through his bared teeth. “I love you,” I said. Was that my first time too, saying I loved another? “You love me!” “I love you!” I cried. “Let her alone. I’ll love you, just don’t hurt her, please…arhh!” I shrieked, my flesh stinging as though there were hot coals against it. “I knew you were sick.” "I didn’t want to be,” I cringed, whispering. “Does sex always hurt this badly, in this skin?” The man shoved in. Like a tumor, that ferocious, inside pressure. “Always.” I whimpered, “I thought it would. I knew it would. Even then, they hurt me.” The man covered my mouth. “Just sit there and be tight. That’s good. That’s what we all want.” I blinked slowly, rocked up and down, hallucinating. Could I be quiet and die if that was what my family needed me to do? Did Mother want me dead, so she could live her life without the trouble? I had tried. Perhaps she was happy, playing records downstairs, listening to old pop groups she and Dad used to sing to. Soon her sweet new boyfriend would come down and rub her back as he got in bed, then sigh and sleep. She would be a woman with a place again, with a man, with things to talk about with her friends. Her son would live up in the attic room, outgrown. Her velveteen rabbit sacrifice, burned to ashes. I would hold still and be quiet and lick things I did not want near my mouth and I would lie in blood. I love her. Let her be happy, not me. I moldered, watching the happy couple through the slats of the staircase. They turned. Hatanaka held Mother’s shoulders and said, “Children should be fucked and not heard.” I opened my mouth. It was jammed full. Salty. Hurt. Mother held a finger to her lipstick smile. I nodded, raising my own finger to my lips. Shhh. I could not see for crying, but I lay my head down on a halo of hair. Red sprayed over the pillow like blood from being shot in the head. I drew my arms to cover my eyes, trembling. “Be happy.” Yuusuke yawned, scratching under the hem of his drawstring pjs. “Why can’t Kuwabara see it?” “You think this ape could see something that a thousand year old fox walked through?” Hiei said. “Well, look, I’m just trying to get some damn context. Maybe we get Shizuru and try to double the power. Two for one.” He grinned, cheesily. “That could work.” Kuwabara yelled, waving as Hiei and Yuusuke returned from jogging the perimeter. “The moron said Kurama called him, screaming – on the phone, then by spirit.” Hiei said. “I heard it too, here. I saw him.” “Hurt?” Hiei looked forward. “He needs help.” “Shit,” Yuusuke joked. “Let’s go home. Frankly, if it makes Kurama scream, I don’t want to go in after it.” I watched as they packaged my body up after sawing it into pieces. They were taking me apart to put in the box. He was going away with the family photos. “We can’t just leave you sitting out,” Mother said. “It’s a waste.” There was a big box, cloth covered and with a white ribbon. A doll box, for me. Hatanaka picked up my right thigh, rubbing and kissing it. He smiled at me. “Don’t worry. I’ll visit.” “Take care of them,” I said, as they packed in my arms. “There’s demons.” “Finally,” his mom had a glowing smile. She looked like she did after she washed all the windows in April, thrilled and scented with lemon water. I smiled. Shuichi-chan climbed into the box with my and lay out. “Get out.” I ordered. “No. I have school.” “I know.” The boy was closing the lid on us both. He whispered, “I’m next.” “Fuck it!” Yuusuke began to walk straight in. Nothing happened. Then there were demons everywhere, for one instant. It cheered him, though he was annoyed they might make him late. But they disappeared. He went on. Hiei stood back, watching Yuusuke’s success. The boy had put up his fists once, but kept walking. Hiei turned to Kuwabara, who had dodged in and was now sitting in the grass. “I should have let you go in earlier. Humans aren’t smart enough to be truly afraid.” “I was afraid, when I stuck my foot in earlier.” “What?” “I saw a guy kill a kitten,” Kuwabara said. “I couldn’t do anything about it.” Hiei shook his head. “Idiot.” Someone picked up the box. I felt flesh, arms around me. I clung on. Then I was whole, and holding a bowl of popcorn. We were in the living room. My family surrounded me, Shuichi on the floor, his mother and Hatanaka on either side of me but touching hands behind my back on the top of the couch. Yuusuke walked in, rubbing his neck. “Hey, Kurama.” “Shhh,” I felt my mouth saying. I looked strangely at my family. They had been preoccupied by the murders on tv, but now they turned to Yuusuke, furious. “Look, just come here.” “I refuse,” I said, but again, I didn’t want to say anything. I wanted to die, quietly, and let them keep watching tv. Yuusuke sighed, “I hate to do this. Kurama, you can’t see your family again.” “What?” Suddenly they were gone. “I’m your captain and you’re coming with me. We’re going to go die.” He grabbed Kurama’s hand. I dropped to his knees. “No, no, they need me here. I’m their doll. He’ll hurt Mom and Shuichi. They’ll let him. I have to die here.” “Bigger things,” Yuusuke said. And he dragged me out. Hiei balanced at the edge of the border, watching. The two young men coming out of the house were leaning against each other. Their eyes were half shut and they murmured. Kurama looked like a corpse; Yuusuke was crying and angry. They crossed the threshold. Yuusuke gasped. Kurama fell, opening his eyes and gasping. His color returned. Hiei caught him and pulled him away. Yuusuke pulled a cellphone out of his pocket and blew out his cheeks with a sigh. “Time to wake the old hag up. My dedication to this job is taxed.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
