Nothing had really changed in Demon World. It was still oddly quiet outside the cities, even after three years of not hearing Raizen’s stomach growling. The only things to break the silence were random streaks of lightning, thunder, a few birds, and…
“Yo! Hiei!”
The demon in question rolled his eyes, choosing to ignore the voice as he continued his patrol. He was already pissed off more than usual as it was. Someone tagging along would only make it worse.
“Do you not hear me? I’m talking to you!”
He finally stopped and let the owner of the voice catch up to him. “Not wise to be disrespectful today, Salem. I’m not in the mood.”
Salem put his hands on his hips. “Well you’re just a ball of sunshine today. What happened to you?”
“What do you think?” He looked back to the edge of the forest, starting up his pace again.
“Woah, wait.” Salem caught up in a few strides and stood in front of Hiei. “I know you came out of her chambers before patrol, but you’re usually in… Well I mean you’ve been pissed off leaving there lately, but not this much.” He shifted his stance as Hiei tried to walk around him. “Seriously, did she… end it?”
“What do you care?”
Salem shook his head, spreading out his arms. “Damn, I thought I was your friend. Bonding over booze and all that shit. You told me last time you were drunk she hasn’t been putting out and she’s been immersing herself in work. I’m only looking out for you.”
He rolled his eyes. “Your loyalty can be sickening.” He brushed past him.
“Okay, what, do I have to load you up with liquor for you to be honest with me?” He caught up again, this time keeping pace beside him. “I mean I can do that. I know where all the good bars are in the city. You know that.”
He couldn’t say the idea wasn’t tempting. “If I tell you will you leave me alone?”
“You know I will.”
He growled. “Fine.” He kept his pace, keeping his attention to the forest. “You also remember what I said about settling down?”
“Yeah, balancing fighting with it. I mean, it’s not a terrible thing, having something to go home to.”
He gave a sharp scoff despite his restraint. “Apparently it’s weak.”
“Wait, what?” His pace stalled. “But, I mean haven’t you two been sort of living the settled life? Retiring to her chambers instead of yours?”
“She isn’t much into sharing space.” He shrugged. “Besides, any time I mentioned anything… domestic, she’d laugh, call me a fool, and start talking about work.”
“Like you hate discussing different ways of disemboweling demons.”
“As much fun as it is to share tips on killing, not right after sex.”
Salem failed to repress a shudder.
“What?”
“I mean…” He gestured to the right of his body. “No offense, and not judging you but…”
“I know. I don’t care about physical deformations. But…” He growled again and stopped finally. “It would be nice to know I’m actually satisfying whoever I’ve trusted enough to be with.” He crossed his arms. “Is that really weak?”
“Not at all.” He rubbed the back of his head, scratching through his ponytail. “But what happened to make you this angry? What, did she dump you or something?”
“Something along those lines. Though her words were, ‘What fool would want to be mated? That risks children, and I will not be tied down due to obligations.’”
Salem let out a heavy breath. “Holy… I’m sorry.”
He rolled his eyes. “I don’t need your pity.”
“It’s not pity.” He let out a sigh and motioned for them both to sit in the grass. “Look. I’ve been your friend for two years now. I think that entitles me to give you some sort of advice.”
“I’d rather you didn’t.”
“I either do it now or when I get you drunk at a bar after our shift tonight.” He sighed again. “You’re not weak. You just want something different, and having different paths is nothing to be angry about.” He gestured to where the fortress was anchored. “I mean, yeah what she said was awful, but it’s not true.” Hiei scoffed. “No, hear me out.” He adjusted how he was sitting. “How many women have you been with your whole life?”
“Not many. I’ve always pursued strength, not sex.”
“Okay, then you for sure would never have thoughts like the ones you’ve been having. You’ve always been so caught up in looking to be stronger, you’ve never thought of what would happen after you’ve found it.” He held his hands up at his friend’s narrowed glare. “Not to say you’re as strong as you’re going to be, but… Being mated doesn’t mean you can’t still pursue strength. It doesn’t mean you can’t fight. Hell, given your interests, you’d probably find someone who can fight with you.”
He rolled his eyes. “There aren’t many females still interested in fighting for themselves.”
“It’s a different time.” He tapped Hiei’s arm. “So what? Wouldn’t it actually be a better source of strength? Something to protect?”
He had him there. He pressed his tongue to his teeth, choosing to keep quiet.
Salem, however, found it as an opportunity to keep going. “So, no. You’re not weak. Hell, if anything you’re stronger for wanting something like that. Besides, aren’t you, like, almost three hundred years old? It’s about time.”
He stood. “Utter nonsense.”
“But true.” He stood as well. “Look, while we’re anchored out here because of the disappearances, I’ve been staying at the house on the coast. Stay with me for a few days.”
He shook his head. “Isn’t Yusuke already there?”
Salem smirked, the cross-shaped scar on his cheek pulling back slightly. “You know you already have a room at that house. You also know it is not small.” He shrugged. “Wouldn’t even notice you there. Not with how reclusive you are.”
He looked around, trying to find any excuse to not take the offer. Nothing came to mind. “I suppose it would help in keeping Yusuke involved in the case.”
“So there you go. After shift we’ll go to the bar, get hammered, see some tits, and go home happy.”
Despite the situation, he let a smirk slip. “I can do without the tits right now, but drinking sounds like a good idea.” He eyed the dragon around his arm. “I can do with room to stretch out as well.” He flexed his arm. “It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to see what I can still really do. This… grunt work is demeaning and unsatisfying.”
“At least it pays.”
He was about to say something else but a sudden shift in pressure brought both their attentions to the forest. They went silent as they followed the pressure, keeping to the higher branches to remain out of sight. Once they located the source, they kept their weapons at the ready.
Instead of humans, four female demons stepped out of the portal.
Hiei got a nudge in the ribs from Salem. “What?” he hissed.
“The tallest one is a babe,” his whispered, waggling his brows.
Hiei stared closer at the quad and narrowed his eyes. “I wouldn’t make plans just yet. Those are the four Yama employed.”
“What makes you say that?”
He nodded to them. “At least one of them is familiar by reputation. I’m sure you know of Shakaku.”
Salem didn’t even try to hide his surprise. “That runt with the reptile tail?” He bit at his knuckles. “Damn it; that means the hottie has to be Hyouga.” He looked between Hiei and then the women. “I only heard horror stories about them, and then they vanished. Well, Shakaku did, but I know Hyouga kept at the black market bit for a while.”
“Deliveries only.” He narrowed his eyes as they took in their surroundings. “No idea what they’re doing here though.”
“Are you sure that was the right portal?” Sukuna asked, examining a skinned knee from where she had fallen through. She let her pants fall before straightening herself. “This looks really remote.”
“There are no portals directly in any of the cities, dip,” Hyouga said, hitting the spider demon upside the head. The spider proceeded to whine.
“Sha, she hit me!”
“So what? Your skull’s thick enough. The webs inside should soften the blow.”
“Oh go blow an iceberg out your ass.”
“You want to go?”
“Yeah, I’ll go!”
Sha turned on them. “Virse, io-ne!”
Both instantly closed their mouths, even though they each towered over the small demon.
“Way to go, you made her cuss at you in dracish,” Kitsu said. “Look, Sha’s right. We’ve got a job to do. I mean, 500,000 rurimaru stones. Think of it, ladies.”
They mumbled apologies, their stances still rigid.
Kitsu turned to Sha again, who had started to examine the area the portal had let out into. “Feel anything?”
She shook her head. “Not a damn thing,” she said, her accent rolling through the words. “Then again, we do have the lead that the other portal is underground, to mask the entrance.”
“It’d have to be miles under the surface.”
“Not unheard of. Remember that incident right before we were let out on probation? The one in Human World where the barrier was cut temporarily?”
Kitsu nodded. “Yeah, I remember. I didn’t get to that file though.”
Sha’s shoulders sagged. “I gave you all the case files for you to read up on. I did it for all of you.”
Sukuna gave a pained look. “Yeah, I didn’t read them either.”
Sha threw a glare to Hyouga. “Let me guess, you skipped the reading assignment as well?”
Hyouga mirrored the pained look. “Would you hurt me if I said yes?”
Sha threw her hands up, muttering angrily in a language the men could not understand. She pointed angrily at her crew. “I’m forcing you to read them when we get back.” She sighed. “The portal they opened up was kilometers under the surface, so our intelligence wouldn’t know for sure where it was. Even when they did find it, they couldn’t find the entrance to the cave. And then, even that was hard to navigate without help from someone on the inside.”
Hyouga crossed her arms. “Okay, so are you thinking the same thing is going on?”
“Yes, it has to be.” She looked around again. “So if this is where they’re going missing, it’s safe to say that there may be a cave entrance nearby.”
Salem and Hiei took the opportunity to land in front of them. The girls took the offensive. Due to the day he was already having, Hiei found it a way to let lose some of his anger. “We’ve scoured this forest for days. There’s nothing here.”
“We’re here on orders,” Sha answered, her rapier held steady in front of her. “Stand down, soldier.”
He chose to let the soldier quip slide. “I know what type of person Koenma is better than you think. If you tell him who sent you back, he’ll accept failure with no question.”
“I still need to pay rent.” She narrowed her black eyes. “Unless you’d like a poor little girl like me to waste away.”
“You can’t fool me. I know who you are.” He stood up straight. “Call off your comrades. We do not wish to fight.”
She stared for a second before confirming his request with a motion of her hand. She sheathed her rapier. “Then what are you doing out here watching us?”
“We’re part of Mukuro’s patrol group in this area,” Salem supplied as each of the women stood straight.
Hyouga looked confused. “Why still send out patrol when she hired us?”
“Your presence is news to us.”
“So she still has you thinking you’re the only ones on the case?”
“Seems so.” He jerked his thumb over his shoulder. “Actually, you’re not the only surprise visit. Yusuke joined in yesterday. He’s staying at my place currently while we gather evidence.”
Sha narrowed her eyes. “Why would he be here?”
“A personal favor to Enki, so he’s said.” Salem put his hands to his hips. “Since Enki and Yusuke’s father were old sparring buddies, I think Yusuke feels he owes him something.”
“This must be something really big then. More than just missing humans,” Kitsu added. “Would you mind if we met with him to compare notes? Maybe he’s found something that can help us.”
“Your guess is as good as ours. Like Hiei said, we’ve scoured this entire sector with no results.” He extended his hand out. “However, if we’re to work together, we should at least know who we all are. I am Salem, my partner here is Hiei.”
Sha took the extended hand with an acknowledging nod. “My name is Sha, these are my friends Kitsu, Sukuna, and Hyouga.”
They parted again. “Very nice to meet you all.” He titled his head back. “Our shift is pretty much over. We can take you to Yusuke. He’s at my place right now.”
“It couldn’t hurt. The more eyes, the better.”
