.Chapter 17: Light to Darkness
~~~In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present.
*Francis Bacon~~~
The darkness swarms around you inside this illusion you've built. You feel trapped and helpless, like a firefly in a child's palm. There's nowhere to go, and nothing to do except wait. The noises from around you are muffled, which is actually a good sign on how well your illusion is constructed, but it's driving you crazy not knowing what's happening. How will you know when it's safe?
A stab of restlessness shoots through you. I should be out there fighting too, you think sullenly. Something snarls dangerously close, followed by a grunt, and a wail, then the fighting moves on. Is boils your blood, makes you feel half-crazed for a little action. Perhaps I could make a peephole, you suggest slyly to yourself. Then I could see what's going on, and no harm done.
You're just about to test this theory, when something crashes into your illusion and it waivers, and a little light seeps through. Your focus returns, all thoughts of peepholes driven from your mind. The pups squirm in your belly like they know what's going on. It helps bring you back to a more rational way of thinking. You have to be careful. It's the night of the new moon, and while you're feeling a little edgy, those demons out there are ravenous for you.
It bums you out, actually, because they don't want you for your smile, your great sense of humor, your hunting abilities, or hell even your looks. They want you for your scent, and come morning all parties would be sorry if they got their hands on you. If anything happens to your pups…each and every demon here tonight will be very sorry. If they live long enough.
Something strange is happening. That all-encompassing darkness around you is slightly less. You can just make out the form and grit of the wall surrounding you. It looks so real, so solid, and yet… Something hits the illusion, and again it shivers. It's nothing, you think to yourself, but another blow falls, then another. Something it literally clawing and beating at your illusion. The feeling is unpleasant, like pain just above your skin, disconnected and yet…it hurts.
"Come out of there, bitch," the voice on the outside growls. "I can smell you. Come out wolf-bitch!"
The illusion shatters, splintering away into a million pieces of nothing and air. You stare up at the creature with eyes like black coals, dead and without shine, feeling your heart thunder inside your chest. You can't move. You can't get out of the way in time, and he's about to descend upon you. You can already smell his thoughts, and his madness like stale bacon and citrus.
Zing!…smell her…touch her…mine…have to…mate…smell her…her…bitch…wolf-bitch…touch her…take her…mine mine MINE!
No! your mind screams…not his, never his. You're Hiei's and your own! Anger, like fire spills across your skin, burning you alive, eating your insides up until you're certain you'll drown in it. But you don't drown, you float, and then you fly. The demon's face is suddenly bathes in a pale yellow light, and you feel your claws lengthen. The demon hesitates, and it's enough, you're on your feet ready to strike. But something's wrong. It's like the demon isn't looking at you anymore, but through you. You turn to glance behind, but there is nothing of interest there. Your return your attention to the demon, and a small line of blood has begun at the corner of his mouth.
And there, protruding from his chest, how did you miss it? The hilt of a katana glistens in the slight glow from the tiki lights. You watch, spellbound, as the metal sinks back into the skin until you can no longer see it, and the demon crumples to the ground, revealing only Hiei. The look on his face could curdle milk, or flay a person alive. But you skin remains calm against your body, and your eyes flicker over the length of him. Interesting time to arrive. You wonder how long he's been watching.
Your hand rubs gently over your belly, and for a terrifying moment nothing happens. Then the pups shift, and settle down once more. You smile in relief. Around you the humans have dispersed completely, and a few demons huddle dead or wounded on the ground.
After a quick look around you smirk at Hiei. "Your doing?"
His face is still, posture rigid. "This isn't a game." His voice is low and just this side of a growl, as if he's having to work very hard not to hurt you.
Your temper flares in reaction to his own, like a match flaring up into a bonfire, and his face is suddenly awash in a yellow glow. He squints, but doesn't turn away. You which that someone would extinguish that light, but right now your anger is demanding all of your attention, and you're more than willing to give it.
"I never thought it was a game," you shoot back, voice sharp with your rage. You'll use that edge as a weapon if you can, just find the weak spot, and attack. "Do you think I can't protect my own children."
"You can't," he said, and statement was like a blunt blow to the chest.
"I every bit as much a demon as you are, Hiei," you snarl, feeling your lips curl back to expose longer than normal canines.
"You're weak," he spits. "And if I let you return to that thing you call a pack, my child would grow up weak as well."
"What do you know about weakness?" you howl. "I bet you've never even seen what real weakness looks like." He raises an eyebrow. "That creature at your feet, Hiei, look at him. He's dead. You can't get much weaker than that. But here I am, alive."
"Luck and my katana are the only reason for that." Your heart is thudding in your ears, growing louder and louder, spreading tension shivering through you. Why can't he just understand? You will be Alpha, and you will return with your pups to the pack. To think I wanted him with me, you berate yourself. Because in fact you had wanted him with you, to mate, to guide, and to protect.
The way of the wolf demons is that strength comes in numbers. Family is your greatest strength. But Hiei, his strength is a lonely one. You're rage dissipates slowly as you realize you'll never make him understand. He just can't see things the way you do. And perhaps you can't see them his way either. It's not like he has any family you know of…but wait. A thought springs to life in your mind.
"______(y/n), we're going back to the temple," Hiei says, taking a step closer. "And you are going to stay there until the child is born."
"Your child," you snap.
He rolls his eyes. "Yes, my child."
"No. You don't understand. Stop calling our child 'the' like it's something separate from you. These will be our children. Our family. Not just things. Or don't you know anything about family, Hiei?" He stiffens.
There is a moment where you could let it go. Where you are face with a fork in the road of your mind and chose the simpler, kinder seeming path. Let it go. Don't press the advantage. But he's made you so angry, partly because he's wrong, and partly because he's right, and most simply because he can't love you the way you love him, and it means that you'll spend the rest of your life wanting him, even when you become Alpha.
You follow the darker path.
"Or maybe you do?" you quirk a brow at him, and your voice lilts into a taunting, sing-song pitch. "You know, I bet our pups will have your eyes, Hiei. Did you know that most often it's the father's eye color that's dominant in the child? For the mother it's the hair. What do you think of that? A child with silver hair and crimson eyes?"
"What are you getting at?" But his scent betrays him. Zing! …eyes…my father's eyes…our eyes…could she have gotten them…?
You shrug, feeling the cruel smile stretch across your mouth. "It's not a hard and fast rule, maybe it's just an old wives tale. But you have very unique eyes, Hiei, so I hope at least one of out pups gets them. I've only ever met one other person with eyes like that."
"Be careful how you proceed, wolf," he snarls, and you can see his power leaking out slowly from his pores.
It's thick and black. Like his heart, you think angrily to yourself. But power is spilling from you too, little golden wisps of it, until you're looking at the world through a haze of your own personal sunlight. Your powers meet in the space between your bodies, smacking against one another and cackling. Little electric jolts slice through you, and watching him you can tell he feels the same.
There you stand, facing off, pillars of darkness and light, sizzling with anger. You should be careful. Fate has given you another chance to retreat and salvage what you can. This is the moment where you could bow down, be the graceful one, and let him master you.
But your pride won't allow it, and you shake off Fate's last escape.
"I hear Yukina's looking for a brother, Hiei. Do you think he'll have eyes like hers? Do you think she'll ever find him?" Something remarkably close to a snarl passes through Hiei's clenched teeth. "Perhaps I ought to give her a sniff? I could carry her scent with me for years, and if I ever bumped into her brother, I'd know. Do you think she would like that, Hiei?"
The tension snaps, and the light of your energy and the darkness of his rush each other. They hit with enough force to stagger the both of you, and the wolf inside of you, that wild and fierce creature rips itself from the middle of your chest in one hard jerk. It stands in front of you, facing off with a black flame in the shape of a man. It's not Hiei, because he's standing behind the creature, eyes glowing darkly.
You realize then your mistake, but it's too late to change it. Too late to fix it. And between one breath and the next, your spirits attack.
