As it turns out, seven on one is not as one sided as it may appear at first. All seven were struck backward one by one as they each tried to make an opening for the other. The demon’s defense was too solid, as if he could see all around him, above, below, anywhere. The demon merely grinned as the dust settled. “That’s all?”
Hyouga spat out a bit of blood from a cut in her cheek. “Any other ideas? I’m open to anything here.”
Salem shook his head. “Small combinations of energy are not going to work. We’ll need to combine as many as possible. He has the impenetrable skin of a kyukonki, and the vision of a fucking psychic.” He looked to the group. “It’s going to take a lot to take him down.”
Yusuke grinned. “Just because he’s tough on the outside doesn’t mean shit.” They felt a sudden chill creep through the cavern. “Damn… did you guys feel that?”
Hyouga’s eyes widened, looking back in the direction they had come. “Sha’s in trouble.”
“And so are you,” the demon interrupted. “If only one of you branched off to face Gentama… that cold was probably their spirit saying goodbye, I can guarantee that.”
Hyouga clenched her jaws, knowing there was nothing she could do to help her best friend.
“So,” the demon continued, “if the six of you are ready to end your lives, let’s resume.”
Kurama frowned. “Six?”
The demon gave them no time to process, no time to look. Immediately they were on the defensive again, trying to find an opening. They all dodged and weaved, some trying to distract while others went on the offense. The demon swiped at them all, choosing to rely on his claws only, primitive but effective.
Sukuna attempted to hold him down with webbing, though he slashed through the fibers immediately. She would not let up, siphoning her energy into the webs themselves, attempting to make them strong as steel. A few of the fibers caught the demon’s arm, and then his leg.
Once he was distracted by Yusuke’s spirit gun blast grazing his face, Sukuna could finally catch up his legs. She pulled roughly, sending the demon flying off it’s feet.
It was just the advantage they all needed to rally their energies together. Salem pulled the shadows from the floor, dragging the demon down into the floor, right below his knees as the energies crackled and merged together into one blast delivered from Yusuke’s trusty index finger. Electrical cracks and screams echoed off the walls.
Hyouga ground her teeth together but held strong with the others. “Give it all you got!”
A second push from the combination swept over the demon. Faint snaps and pops could be heard over the electricity of energy, the screaming turning agonizing and sickening.
Yusuke gave one final yell and pumped the rest of his own spirit energy into the blast. The body of the demon flew backwards, disintegrating in places during it’s short trip into the adjacent wall of the cavern. They each let up one at a time, some holding on to their breath, silently willing the creature to stay down.
Upon further observation, they saw getting to it’s feet was not going to be an issue. The demon had left those behind in the ground where Salem had pulled it into the earth. Sukuna heaved a bit as the dust settled and the grisly remains of the demon’s legs poked out from the solid ground.
When the demon stilled, succumbing to its wounds, faint exhales could be heard behind Yusuke as they each caught their breath. “I think we got him,” he said, lowering his wrist once sure it was safe to do so.
“I think so,” Hyouga agreed. She turned to Sukuna and Kitsu on her left. “We’ll check on the humans on the top floor. You guys take the bottom. If we’re lucky, we might be able to get some home where they belong.” They parted ways, the girls taking to the makeshift stone stairs while the boys began to look for survivors strapped to the harvesting devices.
No one commented on the whereabouts of their suddenly missing black-clad teammate.
Darkness was the first thing Sha became aware of. Second was the growing ringing in her ears. She felt the urge to slit open her eyes, blinking herself back to consciousness. She knew she didn’t have much longer before she had to shift back. She attempted to get up, repositioning her forearms under her, claws digging into the solid earth. Something solid swiped her arms from under her. Her chin snacked into the stone, and she only just missed biting her tongue clear off. A heavy boot pressed the back of her serpentine neck, pressing her trachea painfully against the cold stone below her.
The boot left, only to be replaced as a powerful swing to her ribs, cracking at least two on impact again. Another came, and another, sending her soaring through so much pain she could only see white. No sound met her ears besides a harsh ring. Another blow hit her, this time closer to her head.
All at once the beatings stopped, replaced by the heavy sound of a punch landing against some part of a body and a surprised grunt of pain.
She tried to take in a deep breath, but only hissed in agony.
“Stay down. I’ll take it from here.”
She believed the pain was making her hallucinate. Still weakened, she attempted to open her eyes, only seeing blurs through stinging tears. She blinked a few times, still having trouble placing the figure in front of her. She let out another pitiful hiss, but the ringing was slowly subsiding, as was the throbbing of her brain against her skull.
“You’ll have to get through me first to kill her.”
She wasn’t sure if she was alive or dead. Get out of here… she wanted to yell. Her shifted cords did not allow for speech. She attempted to get to her feet again but collapsed from pain.
Hiei glanced at her. “Stay down. You’ve done enough. Revenge is a stupid thing to die for.”
She still tried, pain be damned. A white-hot flash radiated from her side, rendering her immobile.
Gentama laughed. “She doesn’t have much time left as it is. Once her energy is depleted from remaining in that runt dragon form, she’ll have nothing left to draw on.” He grinned. “It was the perfect trap. Prod a dragon’s pride and they can’t help but to play right into your hands.
She suddenly felt frozen, ice taking place of the fire coursing through her veins. Leave before he kills you too!
The energy in the room shifted, crackling with subtle anger.
“Though if you want to be the one to die first, so be it.”
The two before her vanished, only to be replaced by clashing steel and darting lights. She returned to her demon self, hanging on to a sliver of her energy. Any longer in her dragon form and she would have reverted regardless, with no reserves to heal herself. Her energy began to repair what it could, targeting her vitals first. In the process, she became a spectator, hating how helpless it made her feel.
Meanwhile, Hiei had trouble remembering the last time he was as hyper-focused in a fight. He was able to track Gentama’s movements with ease, blocking, parrying, and chancing a strike with sword or fist whenever he was granted an opening. They each leapt about the cavern, exchanging blows more in the air than anywhere else, landing just to gain more momentum. Adrenaline rushed in his veins, reigniting his bloodlust. A single slip in his stance allowed Gentama to land a solid blow to his cheek, but he managed to tilt his head with it so the worst of the impact slipped off his flesh. It didn’t mean he was free of pain. He staggered back, angrily wiping his wrist against his busted lip.
He didn’t have enough time to assess the damage before he was back on the defensive, understanding immediately how Sha had had such difficulty taking him down. He felt the dragon twitch on his arm, begging to be released. He just couldn’t find an opening to where she would not end up collateral damage. He pulled back for a swing with his sword, only to find his opponent had vanished before his eyes.
He was sent hurtling into the ground hard by a blow to the back of the neck. “Give it up,” Gentama snarled as he landed beside Hiei. “You can’t win!”
He pulled his knees under him, forcing himself back up through the pain. “You talk a bit game.” He held his sword in front of him, chancing the smallest of glances to Sha to make sure she was still in the same location. Luckily for him, her energy would not allow her to move as her body healed. “Though I’m finding your voice more and more grating.”
Gentama growled in amusement through his teeth. He held up a crackling ball of sickly yellow energy in his palm. “Allow me to send you to the afterlife then.” He vanished again, attempting to reappear behind his opponent. He stopped short when his opponent mirrored his motion. He looked around. “Where are you?” A rush of black energy erupted in the room, making a chill run down his spine.
“You leave me no choice in the matter,” Hiei said from the depths of his own energy, masking the true location of his physical body from his opponent.
Gentama growled, though could not stop a bead of sweat from forming on his brow. “You can’t scare me. This isn’t enough to take me down.” The energy grew in intensity, actually forcing him back as it came in contact with his skin. “It will take more than this pitiful mist to make a dent in me.”
Within the crackling depths of his energy, Hiei sneered. “You want more?” He took off the bandana to free his Jagan, immediately amplifying his power. “Gladly, you son of a bitch.” The dragon on his arm screeched to life, leaping from his arm and slithering around him, soaking up the energy he had been laying out as bait all along. What he didn’t expect to see were the faint traces of carmine red blending in with his black mist.
“Wait, you can’t let something like that loose! You’ll kill us all!” Gentama shouted. “Do you have a death wish?”
Hiei couldn’t help but laugh. “I’ll admit, if I had tried to do this four years ago I’d agree with you.” He held his forearm up, allowing the dragon to slither around his flesh. “But now… I hope you have no regrets.” He started a bit as he felt a weak touch at his back, but relaxed as the carmine rushed through his dragon, amplifying the power twice fold. He hadn’t realized where he had set his footing. Without another word he set the dragon on it’s course, willing it to keep his opponent in it’s jaws as it flung him around the room.
The chamber filled immediately with screams of anguish and the smell of burning flesh. The dragon hurled Gentama into the walls repeatedly, knocking stones free all around them. Hiei felt the hand leave his back and heard a soft thump of a body hitting the ground.
He immediately turned to see her struggling to catch her breath. He clicked his tongue. “Idiot, why did you do that?” A loud crack drew his attention upwards just in time to see a large stalactite quiver and fall. He immediately pulled her out of the way just as it crashed to the cavern floor. The dragon still had not let up it’s assault, though from what he could see and hear there was little left for it to devour. Seeing little other option, he hefted her into his arms and left the cavern.
Not a moment later another stalactite fell, blocking the entrance to the cavern behind them. The dragon’s lone shriek faded away behind the solid stone. He shook his head and kept moving. Her body temperature was what really made him move. It was much colder than he had gotten used to. She was unresponsive, but still breathing. He took that as a good sign.
Just as he was about to enter the main chamber he had abandoned the others in, she gave a very minute stir. She gasped out in pain and he stopped moving.
“I’m dead, aren’t I?” she croaked out, and he was surprised at the amount of pain still laced in her tone.
“No. You still get to fight another day.” He shifted her light weight in his arms a bit. “Though not for some time, I’d think.” He frowned at her, even though she still had not opened her eyes. “Why did you infuse your energy with mine? You needed that to heal.”
“I needed it to do what I did.” Her eyes clenched even more, a clear indicator of a migraine. “I needed to know he would not survive.” She lifted the arm not pinned against his chest to her forehead. “Can you please lecture me later if you have to? When the world isn’t threatening to split in half.”
He nodded, hoping she at least felt the motion. “Of course.”
“Sha!”
Sha winced at Sukuna’s voice as it rang out down the narrow corridor ahead of them. “Ow…”
The others were retreating from the main chamber, with five humans trailing behind at a paranoid arm’s length away from the group. The females rushed forward from the group, and Hiei set her on her feet.
Immediately her knees buckled and she instinctively grabbed at his arm to keep steady. “Is the volume necessary?”
“For running off like that? Yes.” Hyouga kept her tone relentless, knowing exactly what sort of migraine Sha was suffering from. “You did something extremely stupid, and now you’re going to feel those consequences.” She softened her timbre to a more tolerable level. “Is it over? Is he…?”
Sha nodded, keeping her eyes lowered against any light that penetrated that far down.
“Well, even more good news,” Yusuke added. “We managed to rescue these guys.” He jerked his thumb behind him to the still-petrified humans. “We’re gonna take them topside and Koenma is sending someone to take them home. Lucky bastards won’t remember a damn thing.”
“We also managed to find a computer terminal with the organization’s plans for the area,” Kurama added, holding up a CD. “Most everything is explained with just a few holes protecting the identity of the human in charge of it all.”
Sha frowned. “Wait, a human did all this? For what purpose?”
“The same reason humans do anything,” Kitsu answered. “Greed.” She gestured to the five shaking forms of the traumatized humans. “The human in charge knew most all the inner workings of our world, especially the newest tradition of picking out leaders with a tournament. The sick fuck was stocking up, in case things went south after this upcoming one in two months.”
Sha could feel her already weak stomach twist. “He was planning on getting ahead, even if Enki won again, or someone like him. There would be plenty of demons jonesing for human flesh after all these years.” A sudden thought raced behind her eyes. “So wait, the diplomats?”
“Not a diversion,” Salem answered. “The diplomats for several different areas were on board for this plan, and were developing smuggling rings to make it happen. Koenma has already passed that information on to Enki so they can be brought in for questioning.” He looked to the disk. “Until the official evidence is in, anyway.”
“So that’s it then? This human gets to walk?” Her vision started to go double, but she did not let on how damaged her body was.
“There’s no information on him, but we do have a single image captured only a few days ago.” Sukuna cracked her knuckles. “See, having a computer expert on your team is advantageous after all, what with the upcoming rise of technology and all.”
Sha rolled her eyes and flinched. “So, we’re done here?”
Hyouga nodded and smiled. “Case closed. Come on, let’s go topside so we can rest. We all deserve it.”
