.A/N: I have to say…you ladies…you keep me here, pumping out chapter after chapter! And as we careen closer and closer to the conclusion of Alpha…I'd say somewhere in the vicinity of 5-6 chapters away…I just want to let you know it's been a thrill, and I never expected to have such a positive response to this story. You've given this story life, because without all of you—especially those of you who've been with me since the beginning or close to it—this story would have withered and died long ago.
Thank you, to the most enthusiastic set of readers I've ever had the pleasure of writing for ~_^
This chapter is dedicated to those of you who have been with me for the long-haul, and who are sticking with it til the end…XOXOXO
.Chapter: 18: Mirror to the Soul
~ You realize then your mistake, but it's too late to change it. Too late to fix it. And between one breath and the next, your spirits attack.~
If you've never felt the collision between your soul and someone elses, there is no way to describe it. The wolf in you, and the fire demon in Hiei, collide with enough force that the earth quakes beneath you, and the stars flee behind the rolling clouds. It's no Hollywood trick! This is the real thing, and with two spirits snarling and fighting one another so fiercely, unbound by flesh, the elements are reacting.
Hiei's ki-manifest strikes yours squarely on the nose, flinging it back, through your body, and to the ground on the other side. Your eyes go round like saucers on impact, and the pain that follows is like nothing you've ever undergone. It's like being ripped apart and held together all at once.
But your ki-manifest doesn't say down for long. It leaps up, and howls like a freight train, charging past you, and knocking the fire-creature to the ground, ki dripping like saliva from between it's fangs. Those fangs clamp down on the fire-manifest's shoulder, and Hiei sways.
Your heart thunders wildly in it's cage, but you're numb to it now. Hiei's manifest makes a strange mewling noise, and suddenly your manifest is being blasted upward on a ball of black flame. A shriek rends itself from your throat, and the ground rushes up to meet your knees. The hit jars you, but the pain hasn't stopped, maybe it never will.
"You did this to yourself!" Hiei shouts, a moment before your ki-manifest tackles his once more, taking a bite of it's side, and leaping clear before it can manage another blast. Hiei's eyes roll back into his head, and for a moment he looks as if the slightest touch of wind would have him crashing to his knees.
You're too horrified to respond to his jeer, and though you hate to admit it, too worried for his safety, and your own, to give a shit. There was no way any fight you were having was worth this! And now, there's no chance left for Hiei and you! No way he could love you after tonight, not even a little.
He's right, you think, I did this to myself the moment I met him.
"Aroooooooooooo!" you howl, as tears of pain streak down your cheeks.
There is nothing distinct between you now, just a swirling mixture of black and yellow, growing dimmer. Somehow you know that if that light goes out, you'll die. Maybe not right away, probably you'll last long enough to deliver your pups, then maybe you'll fall asleep and your heart will simply cease to beat. But you're not the type to give up. No indeed. You'll finish what you started, and whatever the outcome you'll live with it. Hiei probably won't care one way or the other if his ki-manifest kills you, but you know you'll care if yours kills his.
The pain spins on inside of you, like a drill, slowly cranking away at you, but you force yourself to your feet. If Hiei can remain upright, so can you. Your eyes meet, and you can't concentrate to read his expression through the pain. You wish you could smell him now, and know what thoughts are pouring through that head of his.
His demon eye opens, and a shock apart from the battling of your ki-manifestations pours over you. You can feel him touch on your mind, and suddenly he's there with you, rifling through your thoughts, pulling them one at a time to the surface to be examined.
"S-stop!" you shout, but you're frozen. You can feel his excitement, this domination of you from his ki in one place, and his Jagan in another.
'You can't even keep me out, can you? Without your ki, you're no better than a mortal.'
He's right. You haven't got enough power left in you to even transform into your wolf form. And what a spectacle you must look, ripe with pups and swaying meekly to the barrage against your dimming ki.
'You should not interfere with my business, _______(y/n). Stay away from Yukina, or I'll kill you once our child is born.'
Something bordering hysteria in your brain bubbles up, and spills out your throat in a raspy laugh. "If we keep going like this, you won't have to," you tell him, laughing again. He had no idea he was killing you.
The pain suddenly dulls, and you look to see your ki-manifests have pulled apart, and are circling one another. Yours is darker, weakening before your very eyes. It looks like it too late. Unfortunately Hiei hasn't left your mind, and as soon as the thought appears, it's his to see. You feel his shock and instant before he jerks back from you.
You want to say something, but you're both watching your ki now. Even Hiei's ki-manifest seems to be intrigued by something.
The wolf-shaped spirit flickers, and at that exact moment your heart pauses, once…twice…it grows darker. There is no panic in you, only a strange, detached sort of calm. The wolf throws it's head back and sings…that's the only word for what you hear. You've never heard a howl with that beautiful pitch or clarity, and the song seems to come from everywhere at the same time.
So beautiful, you think as it melts away your pain. "Song of my soul, beast to spirit," you hear yourself say aloud, not sure where the words are coming from. "To Alpha born, from omega made…" Your head falls back and that song spills up from between your lips. As it echoes around you, your gaze fixes on Hiei. "One mate, two lives, one soul, forever and ever."
The wolf ki-manifest, now the color of hard amber approaches the fire-ki. Hiei's attention is sucked back to the beasts. But they don't attack one another now, they melt into each other, spiraling around one another like a twister, and stretching upwards like a candy-cane. Thunder growls and lightening smacks at the sky, and the creature reforms, not two now, but one.
An amber wolf with black stripes like a tiger, and black flames blossoming at its paws.
You can feel the power rolling off of this amalgam of souls, and it is ten times greater than they were apart. This is what we could be, you realize, and one glance at Hiei tells you he knows it as well.
A whisper, filled with the voices of many tells you it's time to call your ki-manifest home. But it's so beautiful, you think. The whispers tell you again that it is time, and to be patient. With tears in your eyes, you summon you ki-manifest home, and just like that they are separate once more. Your wolf trots towards you, and sinks into your skin.
You have a moment to see the world through a cloudy haze of amber before it all goes black.

"How could you be so stupid?!" Kurama demands, kneeling beside you, and feverishly checking your vitals. "You summoned your ki-manifest against the mother of you child! And in the human-world no less. You could have raised a mountain! Leveled a forest! Erupted a volcano! You've seen it happen before in the demon world!"
Hiei had never seen his friend so distraught, but it wasn't without good reason. Only the highest-class demons could summon their ki-manifests on purpose, and when they fought each other, the destruction was horrible. How he and his woman had managed this was a mystery to him. And then that dual-manifest. The power had been more than he ever dreamed of possessing, and he knew he could have it.
He frowns, watching Kurama fuss about you, wishing for the fox to go away. He squelches his own need to be by your side.
Kurama looks up very suddenly and demands again, "How could you be so stupid?"
"Shut up, Kurama! It's none of your concern!" The fox glares, but curbs his own anger in favor of the soothing calm he was more accustomed to.
"She seems fine, but I think it's best if we get a healer to see to her."
Immediately the bristling Hiei tempers himself. "I'll get Yukina." His earlier words burn in his ears…but he shakes them off.
Kurama watches him, a mixture of relief and annoyance rustling through his mind. "And one more thing, Hiei. I think we should speak to her packmaster. I know nothing of delivering wolf-demon pups, and she'll be able to help."
Hiei frowns harder. "Her delivery should still be two weeks away, at least."
"Yes, but I fear for what all this stress will do to her."
Grinding his teeth in agitation, Hiei flits off. First the healer, then the packmaster. That last wasn't going to be a pleasant visit at all.

Yukina smiled at something her dear friend Emi said. They'd been walking through the forest all afternoon, a nice distraction, but it was finally well into the evening, and they ought to be heading home.
"Oh look at those darling fawns!" Emi sighed.
Okay, maybe they would wait just a little bit longer. Yukina walked up to the baby deer and smiled fondly. "How are you today?" They nuzzled her cheeks, and she giggled. "I'm glad to hear it!"
"Eeek!" squealed Emi, and the fawns dashed off in the opposite direction.
"Emi! What's the matter?" she asked, whirling around. But it was only Hiei, giving Emi a strangely unhappy look. Yukina frowned at seeing him so upset. "Is something wrong, Hiei?"
"Y-y-you know him?" whimpered Emi.
"Yes, Hiei's one of my dear friends." Some look crossed his face that she couldn't explain or understand.
"Can you come with me to Genkai's temple?" he asked, voice much gentler than his appearance would suggest. "My … mate is ill."
Yukina nodded rapidly, remembering the sweet but confused wolf-demon. She hoped you were alright. "Emi, will you be okay?"
"Of course," she replied. "Be careful."
Yukina nodded, and returned her attention to the broody fire-demon. "What happened to her?"
Hiei flinched. "I'll let Kurama tell you. He's with her now. I have to go to her pack." He paused a moment before asking, "Will you be alright making the trip alone?"
Yukina smiled and waved him off. "Of course I will. Take care, Hiei!"
Hiei sighed, and flitted off towards the planes of demon world, and the wolf-demon pack.
