Morning came almost too soon. Given how heavy they all slept that night to recover from their wounds, it wasn’t a shock that waking up was met with many words of protests. And a few thrown pillows at doors.
Sha groaned in lingering pain and laid her head on her arm, now void of something softer. A rasp of a laugh sounded behind her. “Fuck you.”
“Still sore.”
She snapped her tail halfheartedly at her bedmate, but smiled into her arm all the same, still not opening her eyes. “You don’t have to leave and travel today and limp into work tomorrow. Don’t laugh.”
“You’ve been through worse; don’t lie.”
She stretched carefully and let out a satisfied hum. “True. I’ll make it home to my ice packs and pain killers, at least.”
“It’s a start.” Hiei kept his eyes trained on her back, finding himself memorizing the wing tattoos. Given their arrangement, it would be the last time he’d see them. “How long has this been?”
“About a week. Why?”
“Now I know how long it takes to fully satiate a dragon.”
She laughed into her arm. “Baby, trust me, if we hadn’t been injured as badly, you’d still have a few more rounds to go.”
He shifted to prop himself up on his arm as she turned around. “Is that right?” He found he didn’t mind the endearment, whether it was a slip or not. He had heard it enough in different pitches that week. “But with the injuries?”
“I’m tapped. Your contract is fulfilled, as is mine for you I take it.” She found she couldn’t meet his eyes, and humor started to fade from her as reality sank in. “We go back to real life.”
He let out a heavy sigh. “Finding a new form of employment in this idiotic time.”
“It’s not all bad. A steady source of food and shelter.” She cocked a brow. “Not much to complain about there.”
“Not if you can afford it.”
She huffed in amusement. “I afford a small one bedroom. It’s better than a jail cell.”
“I’d imagine. However, you can afford the luxuries of this era. You’ve found peace.”
She propped her head up on her hand, mirroring him slightly. “I’ve found a niche. It works for what I need.” She shrugged. “I mean, a job isn’t a terrible thing for us swordsmen. Not if you look in the right places.”
He scoffed. “This is an era for science. We need to catch up to humans again. I cannot aid in that in any way.”
“You’ll find something. Enki may need your skills.” She looked around before focusing on his red eyes finally. “And I doubt Salem would mind if you stayed here. He said it himself that he barely uses the house as it is. Just until you can find something for yourself. Until you can find where you fit in with this domestic world.”
He curled his lip. “If I must.”
She chuckled and rolled over to get up. “As someone else who lived in the wilds for decades, it takes some time to get used to. But once you get used to the silence, it’s actually better.”
He frowned as she started to pull on clothes she had brought in the night prior, once more covering the bandages that covered the worst of her wounds. “Why settle for silence?”
“Hard to find a roommate that you can trust, even now.” She adjusted her shirt. “Living in the city helps, with the ambiance at least.”
He let the silence dangle as she moved on to her pants. “How did you adapt?”
“I knew I had to.” She fastened the button. “After a while of being able to sleep through the night, I began to realize the perks. I could still live by doing my job, but I had something to return to. At the end of the day It isn’t much, but it’s mine.”
He took in the information, barely registering her wince as she leaned the wrong way. “It does sound like a charmed life.”
“You could have it, too.” She crossed her arms. “I don’t know why you don’t believe you deserve at least a chance.”
“I never wanted a chance before.”
She narrowed her eyes. “Before?”
He realized what he said too late. He sighed and chose his words carefully. “Before this, I never cared about the idea of heated water at leisure or markets to purchase food and goods in one place. I didn’t care that you could turn on an electronic box and waste hours in front of it. The thought of sleeping through the night without keeping my hand on my sword never crossed my mind before here.” He sat up fully under her gaze. He knew she was analyzing his words. “As for our arrangement this week? I hadn’t thought I had that sort of skill set. Not for a very long time.”’
She smirked and felt her tail sway slowly, rocking her hips. “To be honest, before you I hadn’t thought myself capable of reaching those points. I think our arrangement worked for more than bloodlust.”
“I’d say my pleasure, but I’d like to assume it’s yours as well.”
She laughed again, though it faded fast. “So this is it, huh?”
His humor faded as well. “It is.” He watched as she gathered up her discarded clothing, damaged with blood and tears in the fabric. He found he had nothing more to say, or could say. He couldn’t piece together a semblance of a thought. He had never felt himself addicted to much outside of pursuit of power. And he had been stripped of that once before. He chose silence over words, knowing she’d understand.
“Hey.”
He looked to her, seeing her standing with her back to him.
“If it helps any, no one’s been willing or able to slake my bloodlust entirely. I haven’t been able to think this clearly in decades.” She toyed with the clothes in her hand, drawing out her presence in his room. She looked at him. “Hopefully a half dragon was enough for you.”
He nodded. “Yes.” He wasn’t sure how to act. What they had was only sex, after all. So why didn’t it feel that easy? He stood from the bed, contemplating each of his options. “You should probably not leave your friends too much longer.”
She was surprised to feel a little hurt. She nodded. “Yeah.” She hesitated in taking a step towards him, but shook her head and instead turned her pace to the door. “I had fun with you this week, Hiei. Thanks for being what I needed, in battle and in bed.”
He smirked as she opened the door. “I could say the same, Sha.”
She looked back one last time but said nothing. She didn’t trust anything that she would have said. His temptation of staying longer did not help, especially with him standing half naked in front of her. She gave him a soft smile and closed the door behind her.
Almost immediately, his ears began to ring with silence he was once so accustomed to. A phantom ache clawed at his gut and mind, forcing him to move. There was nothing left for him there. He stepped into the bathroom, plotting how and when he’d leave that day.
Sha only made it a step before she bumped into Hyouga. “What the hell are you doing out here?” she hissed.
“Making sure you were getting ready to leave.” She crossed her arms as they entered Sha’s temporary room. “So how did it go?”
“I’ve never had to walk away from someone like him. I haven’t been addicted to sex with a man like this before.”
Hyouga arched a brow and sat on Sha’s bed as her friend began stuffing things into her duffle bag. “Addicted to the sex, or addicted to the man behind the penis?”
Sha went to retort, but found she couldn’t. She had been so caught up in the moment, she didn’t step back from it to really see.
“Sha, if that’s the case you can’t let him go.”
“Why not? He doesn’t want me, just my body. That was the arrangement.”
“But yours changed.” She gestured to the door. “Why would his not?”
“Because he’s a man with no sense of physical attachment to items?” She cocked a brow. “Maybe that’s why I don’t believe he’d change his mind. I know men. They take what they want from you and leave. All the time.”
“You’ve also been sleeping with the wrong people since Sven.”
She shrugged. “Take what you can get when you can get it.” She tossed a few more rogue items into her duffle bag.
“You don’t know this man. Not really if you think he’s only after sex.”
“He said he is.”
She let out a soft huff. “Sweetie, men have trouble expressing what they really feel sometimes. Especially a warrior. However, even a warrior has eyes and will use them as he sees fit.” At Sha’s confused gaze, she continued. “You didn’t see it, but I know I did. Any time he came into the room with us, he looked at you differently than the rest of us.”
“Yes Hyouga, that’s called lust.”
“That’s not what I saw. The first two days, yeah, but after that it was different.”
She rolled her eyes. “Too late now. We’re leaving, aren’t we?”
“Well, yeah. Koenma wants the reports by ten tonight. That doesn’t mean you have to stop this if it makes you happy.”
“Don’t push it, Hyouga. Please.”
Her hearing picked up a crack in her friend’s voice. She immediately backed off. In all the years she had known her, she had never known her friend to falter. “Yeah.”
“You ready?”
“I’ll be down in a second.”
Sha nodded and adjusted the strap of her duffle bag. “Don’t be too long. Reports suck.”
“They do.” She watched her leave the room and exit down the hall. She couldn’t mistake the subtle glance at the left door before she did. Hyouga sighed. “It’s been too long, you don’t know what it is anymore, do you?” With one last reluctant look around the room, she left, closing the door behind her.
Hiei emerged into the kitchen an hour later, surprised to only see Salem. “Just you?”
He nodded, holding his mug of coffee close to his fingers. “The girls left a few minutes ago. Yusuke went to his room to rest a bit more before he returns to Enki. Kurama decided to escort Kitsu to her apartment.”
Hiei went to the coffee machine to get what remained in the pot. “I’m surprised you didn’t escort Hyouga in that case.”
“I have a date with her tonight. No point following her home like a lost puppy. No offense to Kurama.”
He let himself envision Kurama as a fox following Kistu home, a collar dangling from his neck. He snorted.
“Thought you’d find the image at least amusing.” He shifted as his friend sat down. “So what do you want to do about employment? We both need to look. Or are you taking off into the wilds again?”
“Thinking about it. I don’t have anything keeping me here.” He shook his head. “A domestic life on my own isn’t possible. I’m a warrior. I need something to fight for.”
Salem grinned, glad he had spent a little time studying psychology. “What about with someone? Could you do it then?”
“Why say that?”
“You just said a domestic life on your own isn’t possible. What if there was someone there with you? Someone that you would fight for?”
He chose silence, staring at his coffee. He had never spent time thinking into the life Enki was introducing them all to. He had lived his entire life in the wilds. He wasn’t uncultured; not by a longshot, but he was more comfortable in the wilds than in the city. He couldn’t stand crowds.
“I mean, would it be so bad?”
He thought for a moment more, hiding behind his mug to contemplate. “No, I don’t suppose it would. If I had someone to fight for, it would make sense.”
Salem sighed. “So you didn’t get farther with Sha?”
“We agreed it was only physical.”
“That doesn’t mean anything.”
He didn’t add anything more. He saw Salem had more to say, and allowed him his time.
“Why don’t you think you deserve to be happy?”
He hadn’t expected that. “What?”
“You were happy with her, weren’t you?” He saw his friend wasn’t going to answer. “You were. Deny it with silence all you like. In the two years I’ve known you, I haven’t seen you smile once. You were at least happy.”
He looked at his coffee, seeming disinterested.
“Look, as your friend, I’m going to tell you this: Don’t let the chance pass by. Everyone deserves to be happy, in their own way. And what you view as a weakness? That will eventually prove to be your greatest strength.”
“What do you know of it?”
Salem was thrown, not expecting the question. At least not phrased like that. He bit back a few words and sighed harshly through his nose instead, phrasing his answer differently. “Not long before I joined the ranks the same day as you, I was dumped. I joined to get away. We were involved in rough crowds, and she was my reason for still going.” He needed to find a proper way to word the rest.
Hiei allowed the silence, understanding the need to collect his thoughts. He found he knew very little of his… friend, before the compound. Not that Salem knew much about him either, besides what was public record.
“While she ended it in screwed up ways, I never regret the strength I had from her. Some of the fights I was in I probably would not have won without the idea of her waiting at home.”
He frowned. “Yusuke mentioned something of the same idea a few times while knowing him.” He flicked his eyes to Salem. “From fighting alongside him, I’ve seen remarkable things. Before the blood was sparked by this second death, or really his true death. As a measly human boy from the streets of Human World, he was able to handle the strength of a master sage and take on a B-class demon. Before then, he was able to take on the leader of the Saint Beasts.”
“And even sooner than that, Rando. With all his tricks I would not have even dared fight fair with him.” Salem tilted his head, wondering about his friend’s train of thought. “He’s known his woman all his life, giving him someone to protect. A reason to fight. To gain strength. To be able to protect her from any threat that would come their way. That motivation drives you harder than personal gain ever can.”
Hiei’s dragon slipped slightly, forcing his arm to twitch on reflex. “Avoiding death is also motivation enough.”
Salem took the opportunity to bite. “From what I understand, you accepted death last time it knocked. You managed to avoid it. So why would it be motivation now?”
“It is not. At this point I’ve attained what I’ve wanted my whole life. I only strive for power.”
Salem arched a brow. “For what end goal? To be the strongest? No, that’s not you. You’re not one to flaunt your strength. You taunt your prey.” He clasped his fingers together. “So what is truly your reasoning for power now that you’ve obtained your end goals?”
Hiei realized he hadn’t put thought into it. He had been so caught up in a whirlwind of sex and bloodlust the past week to stop and think of what he wanted to do with his life next. He had always had an end goal. To find his birthplace. To find his sister. To find his gem. In retrospect, to find his place, he sought power. Now that he had it all, what drove him? He sipped on his coffee, piecing it all together. He had known his path his whole life. Now, he had no idea where to go.
“So, would fighting to protect someone at this point really be so terrible?”
He remembered the rush of power he felt when he had come to her aid. Of how his muscles absorbed the heavy recoil of the sword like it was nothing. The fight had left him exhausted afterward, yes, but it felt natural, keeping the target’s focus off something he wanted to protect. It made his sword feel like an extension of himself. He could defend and focus more than ever. Knowing the life of someone he had shared a rare connection with relied on him made the challenge more necessary than desire to spill blood. And when their energies combined with ease, it was like an unstoppable force, leaving them aching but still the victors.
“Hiei?”
He set his mug down, not meeting Salem’s eyes. “I remain in the challenge of having no one like that to drive me. And no desire to find one.”
Salem rolled his eyes. “You’re letting a perfectly good one walk away now.”
He scoffed. “Salem, it was only physical.”
“Stop bullshitting for once in your life.” He saw his friend’s eyes widen minutely. “Not once have I heard you laugh as I did when you were with her. I’ve never seen you more relaxed than when she was near you. For once in your life you didn’t look ready to rip someone’s throat out if they moved funny.” He saw he had his interest. “The way you two fought together, I’ve never seen someone able to keep up with you like that. You know it’s true as well.”
He’d bite. “Which means what?”
“You found someone you’re comfortable around. You did not only want her physically, and I know you didn’t have only that of her while she was in your room. You’re a little louder than you think you are with your roleplays. Which, bravo, by the way.”
He tilted his eyes to his coffee again. “So what? You’re suggesting I’m in love with her?”
“No. You’re not the type to fall in love immediately. That would take time. You’re attracted. Hell, I think you may even like her.”
He scoffed and lifted his mug to swirl it a moment. “Even if that were true, she would need to feel the same thing back.”
“Who says she doesn’t?”
“Her.”
“So did you and you’re full of shit. So why wouldn’t she be the same?” He smirked. “People say things to hide exposing themselves all the time. You’ve done it. So who is to say she isn’t?”
He sipped his drink, finding the dark liquid almost gone. “What would it matter? She’s gone and I never found out where she lived.”
“You know where she works.”
“So I can feel like a stalker, showing up there of all places.” He rolled his eyes. “She’s gone, and I’ll be returning to the wilds.”
Salem knew it was time to drop the subject. He had no idea how to help. A sudden thought hit him. “I can find out.”
“Find out what?”
“Where she lives. I’m seeing Hyouga tonight. I can ask her.”
He stood from the table to withdraw to the sink. “Drop it.”
Salem went quiet and allowed his friend to retreat from the room. He knew it was pride that kept up the front. He tilted his mug to his lips, still puzzled as to why his friend refused to let himself have any chance at happiness. Of stability.
