.A/N: Alas, I've had this chapter for about four days now, and for some reason I couldn't update from the house I was dog-sitting at. Anywhoo, here tis, at last. ~_^
.Chapter 19: What Dreams May Come
"There is nothing wrong with her, except maybe exhaustion," Yukina said, pushing her aqua bangs off her forehead and rising to her feet. "She'll sleep until she's regained her strength." Her eyes darted to the side as a pained look crossed her face.
"What's the matter?" Kurama asked, letting his eyes wander from your sleeping form to Yukina's face.
"It's just that, if she doesn't wake up soon, these pups are almost ready to be born, and if her body tries to deliver while she's unconscious, both mother and children will be in danger." Tears bubbled up in her cherry eyes. "I don't think I can help her if that happens, Kurama."
Kurama frowned. "You think she'll be asleep for two whole weeks? The pups aren't due at least that long."
Yukina shook her head. "Something must have happened them, because these pups are almost ready. I give it another three days, four at the most." She shook her head. "I can't figure it out, she's not even Alpha, so you're right, the pups shouldn't be ready."
They stepped out of her room, as Kurama gently closed the door, and headed towards Genkai's kitchen for some tea. "What's being Alpha got to do with birthing?"
Yukina's face was drawn with worry and the effort to remember as she said, "I can't be sure, I read it somewhere when I was back home. But the text talked about 'alpha' lower case a, and 'Alpha' capital a as two different things. An Alpha, capital 'a' is supposed to have a higher natural metabolism, which increases fetal development. But there's only ever one maybe two per wolf-demon pack." She turned her sad face to the ground. "_________(y/n) wasn't even lower case 'a' alpha. I fear something must have gone wrong."
Several jeweled tears clattered to the ground at her feet, though she ignored them and kept walking.
"I just wish that I could help her."
Kurama nodded solemnly. "Hiei has gone to her pack to seek help for her. It's all we can do for now." Though his voice was soft with calm, his insides raged. If something happened to you, he'd never forgive himself. It was his fault you'd been out that night. It is my fault, he thought glumly.
*~*~*~*
Dreams flay your sleep to shattered restless bits, as you bob between sleep and waking, never quite reaching either. And the voices here, they wail at you so loud that none of the words make sense, if there are any words at all.
The worst part comes when you're near waking, and you know that just a little farther and you could open your eyes. And you want to open them so badly. There's a feeling in the pit of your stomach that tells you if you don't wake soon something bad will happen.
So when you get close to waking you struggle, fight claw and teeth inside yourself to break the surface, but each time you're cast back into the darkness and swirl of your dreams. The screaming scares you, but it’s the only company that keeps you now.
But then, as you try to curl yourself up, hiding as far inside yourself as you can, away from the wailing, a new voice comes to you. Something in it is familiar, like a close friend or family member. This voice knows you, and it whispers across your dreamscape.
Shhhhhh, easy girl…quiet…quiet…
'But the howling!' you whimper helplessly. 'There's so much noise. It hurts.'
That's okay. It will get easier. You're an Alpha now, these voices just want to sing to you.
'Sing? This isn't singing!' You recall the sound of your ki-manifest. Beautiful. And then those words that fell from your lips unbidden.
It would be, if you'd stop fighting them.
'Who are you?'
I'm the voice of your ancestors.
'And the voices?'
Your beast.
As if on cue they raise in volume until the sound is almost unbearable, slicing through your brain with unbearable force. Any moment you feel as if you'll explode.
Relax, wolfling, and they will sing you to your power. If you continue to fight them, then your pups may suffer.
That changes everything. You can't endanger your pups for anything, and though the sound grates against your skull, you allow the noise to slam into you.

"Kurama!" Yukina cried, but the fox-demon was already crashing through the doors. Your scream could have drawn him in from a mile away it was so loud. His heart ached at what it could mean, and as he dropped to his knees by your shoulders to hold you still, it was all he could do to keep the fear from his eyes.
Yukina fought your arms which flailed about, scratching at your ears, which already lay plastered to your head. "I don't know what's happened!" Yukina wailed.
And then you started to howl. The sound was pitiful, and loud, and for a moment Yukina almost released you to cover her ears. Kurama shifted closer and knelt on your shoulders, carefully, applying enough pressure to force you to remain still. Yukina stood up as soon as you were restrained and rushed from the room to gather whatever medical supplies she can. There was an unpleasant feeling in the pit of her stomach as she darted through the house, chased from room to room by the painful pitch of your keening.
When she returned, Genkai had joined Kurama, her dainty but strong hands pinning you at the ankles. Genkai looked up, and the expression on her face was not a happy one.
"The contractions have started," she explained.
Yukina nodded her head, and fought back the frustration that welled up in her. She’d do what she could, that’s why she became a healer after all.
"Have we missed the party?" an unfamiliar voice behind her said. Yukina spun around, eyebrows arching at the beautiful elder wolf-demon, and the young male who looked very much like you.
The male’s eyes pinched in pain as he saw you, and there was something very unfriendly in the way he looked at Kurama.
But the woman was unfazed by what she saw, she simply said, "Which one of you is the healer?" And as she stepped into the room, Hiei followed, face set in its usual frown, giving away nothing. Except there was a slight ashen tint to his pallor.
"Who are you?" asked Yukina. She was more than willing to help, if that’s what this wolf-demon wanted.
"I’m her pack leader," Kami replied without hesitation. "Now I’ll tell you what we need you to do…"

The sound, it’s so awful, and you can’t get away from it, like it’s got hooks in your skin and that terrible vibration is slowly driving you mad. The voice, the one that claims to be your ancestors, is trying to speak to you, willing you to calm, but you can’t. Not with this pain. You grope about for some kind of strength, something to latch onto and give you peace from this sea of sound from which there seems no escape.
Then something penetrates the fog. The scent of the forests of the demon world, their high trees, and the damp smell of soil. And something else, the musky rich scent of pack, of home. It rolls across you, wrapping you up in a blanket of calm, secure as the bodies of your pack brothers and sisters pressed against you on the cool nights.
There, the voice of your ancestors tells you, now you can hear their singing.
It’s true, you realize. It’s that same sweet song that pealed like liquid moonlight from the muzzle of your ki-manifest, and now it hums through the air like some sort of triumphant homecoming. You feel filled with joy so intense that you could just burst, becoming nothing but tiny dust particles of joy for others to inhale and take in, spreading it like infection.
It’s a giddy sort of high.
‘Is it like this all the time?’ you ask. Beautiful as it is, you can feel the potential to be overwhelmed by so much joy.
As I said, it will get easier.
That doesn’t seem like much of an answer, but you let it go, ready to relax and bask in the glow. It’s so gentle now, everything, and you could just let it wash you away on this current of good feeling.
Not yet, wolfling, says your ancestors, you must awaken now. There will be time for your newfound Alpha later.
‘But I don’t want to do it later,’ you sigh dreamily. ‘I’m here now. I’ll do it now.’
Unfortunately, that’s now how it works, he instructs calmly. It’s time.
*~*~*~*
"What’s that noise?" asked Yukina, feeling the shivers gyrate across her skin.
It was so amazing, what she’d just seen. The woman, Kami-sama, and your brother had dropped to the ground beside you cuddled you between them, and within moments your screams had changed to this new sound. It was so beautiful, like the sound of dozens of wolves crying out to the moon, but each howl had its own distinct, and beautiful pitch.
Again her skin crawled with delighted goosebumps.
"That’s the song of our people," Kami-sama said as if it were truly nothing special. But the look in her eyes said differently. She and your brother shared a look, but said nothing.
The sound died as suddenly and mysteriously as it had begun, and the silence that thundered through the room was almost stifling. Then you opened your eyes, a strange faraway and peaceful look on your face. Yukina nearly cried with relief. Hiei took an unconscious step closer, and Kurama secretly thanked ever deity he’d ever known for your recovery.
"Hey there little sister," Ookami cooed.
She smiled at him, seeming to sink further into reality as moments passed. But when she opened her mouth to speak, a spasm wracked your body, and you curled slightly in on yourself.
Kami’s fce was strangely solemn as she said, "It’s time."

.A/N: I’m really tired, so no big news today. I reckon I’ll think of something and e-mail you mailing list kids ~_^ But aside from that I hope this was enjoyable.
