The winter season came upon Demon World with a vicious chill, laying snow in its path. With the passing winter weeks, lights began to hang from the storefronts in Severa and Gandara. While still a newer widespread practice, some demons had been practicing human customs for a few years. With the shift, more and more were turned on to the idea of putting more color on their streets when it became covered in miserable snow. Even the halls of Spirit World were dimly lit with multi-colored bulbs on strings, and had been for a few weeks.
Sha paperclipped her final folder together and stood at her desk, tapping a few folders together and shifting them to her hips. She kept her strides steady as she retreated to records. As she approached the doors, Hyouga, Kitsu, and Sukuna came out of them. They were rapidly talking about something, but stopped when they saw her. “Hey Sha, where have you been?” Sukuna asked.
Sha held up the folders. “Finishing up the last of the records. I guess you have plans for the New Year?”
She saw the subtle glance between Hyouga and Kitsu as Sukuna answered. “Yeah, I’ll be at home with a book, but they’ll be having more fun.”
Sha smiled. “I’ll bet.”
Hyouga looked at Sukuna and then Sha. “Sha, if you need something to do tonight—
“No, a book sounds good as well. It’s alright. I’m glad you guys are happy. I like Salem and Kurama. Really.” She stepped around them. “I’ll see you in a few days.”
“Sha…” Hyouga continued.
She let out a light laugh to throw them off her back. “I’m fine, really.” She had been for the last few days of November. Until Salem started to show up for lunches with Hyouga. And then Kurama began to do the same for Kitsu not long after.
Then weeks passed. Sha felt numb again, more tense with bloodlust with each mission. She shook her head and held the door. “I used him too, remember?” She closed the wood behind her, not realizing how tight she had gripped it. She let out a breath she didn’t know she held.
She kept her pace, wanting nothing more than to leave and escape to her home. She felt safer there, and had purchased herself something brand new and buzzy that worked much better than B.O.B. to try to slake the bloodlust. With her short vacation, she hoped she could rid herself of enough to not snap at her team as she had started doing again. Last mission she broke rank and took out a squadron on her own. She was growing reckless and that could not happen. Not while they were still being closely monitored on probation.
She thumbed through the filing cabinet she needed, sorting the folders she had brought with her. It was late enough as it was, but found she didn’t see a need to rush home. She returned to her office for a few more files that needed to be added into the computer, deciding to get a small jump on the new year’s work.
Hyouga made it most of the way to her coat rack before her phone began to ring. She took her coat and walked over to the device with a puzzled glance. She picked up the receiver from the cradle. “Hyouga Inoki.”
“Hey, it’s Salem. You know how we have plans tonight?”
“Yeah, what about it? Do you need to cancel?”
“No, nothing like that. I, um…” He hushed his voice. “I need you to invite Sha.”
Her frown deepened. “Not that I don’t care for her, but why?”
“He came back.”
She felt a jolt of adrenaline. “I’m on it.” She dropped the receiver to the cradle and adjusted her jacket as she left her office. She opened the door again as she realized she forgot to turn the lights off. She quickened her steps to Sha’s door. The blinds in the window next to her office door were drawn, but her lights were still on, albeit dimmed. She let out a breath to even her pulse and rapped on the door. She waited for permission to go further.
“Yeah?”
She opened the door, seeing her friend’s surprised look. “Hey you.”
Sha frowned. “Hey yourself? Don’t you have a date tonight?”
Hyouga clapped her hands in front of her. “Ah, about that! Turns out it’s a group thing. So I wanted to invite you.”
Sha shook her head. “I appreciate the offer, but I’m okay at home.”
Hyouga closed the door behind her for privacy. “Oh come on. You usually would be dying to go. What’s going on?”
“Nothing. I’m fine.”
Hyouga snorted and Sha cocked a brow. “Yeah, okay. So your actions last mission were normal?”
“I let him go, didn’t I?”
“He almost bled out, Sha.”
“Almost.” She sighed, clasping her hands together with her pencil still between her fingers. “Alright, fine, maybe I’m not okay.”
“It’s fine if you’re worked up again. I expected it sooner, actually. Just… all these years knowing you, you’re usually fine for a week after an encounter, but then your temper usually flares. Off-field, mostly. This time you’ve been different. More brooding. So come out tonight.”
“What would that change?”
“Your mood, for one. Silence isn’t good for you right now.”
Sha rolled her eyes but didn’t argue. She knew this would be an issue Hyouga would not drop. “When and where?”
Hiei followed Salem through the streets of Severa, the nearby city. “We really don’t need to do this,” he said as they stopped at a crosswalk.
“Of course we do. You’ve been gone six weeks and came back on New Year’s. You’re coming on the reservation I made and I don’t care that you don’t like it.”
He couldn’t argue against food he didn’t have to kill himself. Or didn’t have to pay for. “So you started seeing her officially?”
“Yes.” They started forward at the signal to move. “Though I’m not the only one involved since the mission. Kurama started seeing Kitsu more often. I think they’re taking it serious now.”
“I can’t imagine Kurama playing around with a female.” He kept his gaze forward, not familiar with their destination. That and he didn’t care for the part of the city they were in. It was far too busy for him. Especially that holiday night. Many demons were gathering in the streets for the turn of the new year coming in three hours. “I am curious as to why you want me to come as a third wheel on this.”
Salem bit his tongue. He wanted to reassure his friend he wouldn’t be without someone to kiss at midnight. Not that that had anything to do with his agitation. “I’m sure silence is the last thing you want right now. I can only imagine the quiet of the wilds. You need a break from it. Some socialization will do you well.”
“Whatever helps you sleep at night.”
Salem stopped in front of a dark door and opened it for the both of them, revealing a dimly lit restaurant with a faint smell of both meat and fish. Salem looked around. It took a second sweep before he saw the top of lavender hair and ears that faintly twitched with each clinking sound. He motioned for his companion to follow. “Hope you weren’t waiting long,” he said upon approach.
“Not long at all.”
Hiei recognized the voice as Hyouga and expected her as he rounded the corner. He wasn’t expecting her company taking the seat across from her.
And by her face, she wasn’t expecting him.
“Nice to see you again, Hiei,” Hyouga said as Salem took the seat beside her, forcing him to automatically take the remaining one
He merely nodded, indicating he passed on the opportunity to speak.
Hyouga gestured across from her to the woman who had gone back to looking at the fish options. “I was just telling Sha I heard a rumor you were back in town. Too cold in the wilds?”
“There’s a storm approaching much later tonight. Even I was not going to try to brave that. I sought shelter to wait it out.”
“So the return is temporary.”
“Yes. For now.”
Sha reached forward for her wine and finished off the little remains that were in there.
Hyouga immediately picked up on her friend’s frustration, but merely smirked and lifted the bottle that had been left on their table. “You look like you need a refill.”
“Looks like it,” she answered, tilting her glass forward. “You seem to know so much.”
She hid her guilt and poured. “A blizzard? How much later?”
“Mid-morning from what I could gather.” He held up the empty wine glass as Hyouga moved on to him.
“Well that’s one way to greet the new year.” She looked to Sha. “Did you decide yet?”
“Yes. I decided a while ago.” She folded her menu and returned her attention to the wine glass. “Though I’m sure they need time.”
“I’m sure Hiei will be eating anything that isn’t trying to kill him back,” Salem said.
“It will be a nice change of pace.” He found he had a hard time looking to his left. He just hoped a little more wine would help with that.
“And are you staying at Salem’s?” Hyouga asked.
“Unless my presence will interfere with your plans for the night.”
“They won’t,” Salem said. “Hell, if anything I can go back to her place.”
Halfway through his glass he felt more confident. “I won’t interfere if you already had plans.” He chanced a sideways glance first, seeing if anything had changed. From what he could see, nothing was different besides longer hair. And not by much. “I’ll think of something.”
Salem scoffed and closed his menu. “We won’t even notice you upstairs. You came back to avoid the blizzard. Don’t get stuck out in it.”
A memory from six weeks prior rang in his ears as he gave Salem his full attention again. “If you say you won’t notice me.” He felt his blood grow hot and he remembered the other reason he had returned. He just wasn’t sure if that offer was still valid. From her rigid stance, not likely. He suspected something happened while he was away. He gave a half second look before he had to turn his attention to their waiter, another thing he was not comfortable with.
In that brief second he saw Sha’s attention drift to Hyouga, but he didn’t have long enough to read her expression.
Salem ordered another bottle of wine, something Hiei was grateful for. Midway through waiting for their food they met the bottom of their bottle and moved on to the second. Salem uncorked it while they waited patiently. Topics for conversation didn’t last long between any of them.
Hyouga bit her lip and tried again. “So Sha, you’ve been leaving early lately.”
“I get more work done when I spend lunch in the office, I’ve discovered.” She swirled the wine in her glass. “Ever since you and Kitsu started having lunch dates, I’ve been able to do more through that hour.”
Hyouga winced inwardly. She knew the night was going terribly, and that question wasn’t going to help. “I didn’t realize how often we were leaving you.”
“That’s partially my fault,” Salem offered. “I didn’t mean to steal Hyouga from you so often.”
“I didn’t say it was negative, did I?” Her gaze remained cold, claiming otherwise. “I get more shit done on my own. Distractions only get in the way. I’ve been saving a lot of money in the long run as well by bringing my own things in.” She tilted her glass back to drain it once more. “So by all means, take my squad wherever you see fit for however long you see fit.” She set the glass down and got out of her chair. “Excuse me for a moment.”
Not a moment more after her departure Hiei wordlessly got up as well.
Hyouga waited until he was out of earshot to let out a harsh breath. “Well this could be going better.” She rubbed her face. “Shit, I hadn’t realized how much I’ve been ditching her lately. Or how she’d feel about us.”
“It’s not us she has a problem with,” Salem said with a sigh. “It’s him. And us. And Kitsu and Kurama. A mix of things.”
“You got that in the last twenty minutes?”
“I’ve gotten that the past six weeks.” He crossed his arms. “I noticed something, but without knowing her that well, I couldn’t say for sure.”
“What, that she’s jealous or something?” Hyouga scoffed. “Trust me, Sha does not get jealous.”
“Maybe not. But put yourself in her situation. Everyone in her squad ended up happy. What about her?”
“Not true. Sukuna didn’t hook up with anyone.” She frowned. “Though she’s asexual, so that’s a moot point.”
“So let me say it again. What did she gain out of the mission? A week of satisfaction, yes, but so did we. So did the foxes. However, ours is continuing and growing. Theirs died before it had a chance to be anything but physical.”
“Because they’re both stubborn.”
“Because they’re both warriors.” Salem looked up as he saw the waiter approaching with their food. “They’ve both suffered loss and emerged cold and calculating. They’re used to keeping others at a distance, not trusting anyone but themselves. Emotional ties are a burden, not a blessing or a source of strength. Or at least have never been before.” He leaned back instinctively. “Look on the bright side. He followed her just now.”
“I suppose that’s true.” They directed the food to its respective places, deciding to leave the topic to that.
Sha tossed out a damp paper towel and looked at herself in the mirror out of instinct. She tugged her red and black dress to adjust the skirt in reflex. She noticed the twitchy nature in her fingers and clenched them to steady herself. It was hard to feel nothing at all beside him, and that wasn’t part of the plan. She wasn’t sure how to act, and that threw her. Rather than risk fumbling, she decided her tactic would be to regard him at a distance to gauge him.
She pulled her shoulders back and turned to the door. She jumped when she opened it but quickly regained her composure. “Spying now?”
Hiei tilted his head to her right and she followed his gaze to the men’s restroom. “Though I suppose I was hoping to catch you. Away from the instigators we call friends.”
“Is that right?”
“I did come back for more than escaping the storm.” He crossed his arms. “It’s been hard to concentrate. I slipped up last time and have been recovering for a few days.”
“I see.” She mirrored his actions. “Bloodlust.”
“Stronger than I’ve felt in the past. And much sooner.” He gestured to her. “The only reason I didn’t come straight to you is I didn’t want to show up smelling like six-weeks-of-outdoors. I care at least that much.”
“I do appreciate the thought.”
“But if you’ve changed your mind-“
“Why would I do that?”
He frowned. “You were tense at the table.”
“Because Hyouga said it was to be a group event. Which led me to think our squad would be here. I wasn’t aware only Salem was coming. Or you. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind seeing you. Not at all. However…” The rest of the explanation fell past her lips before she could stop. Her body was too tense and she thought a little rant would help.
“After the mission, everything changed. For a few days it went back to normal, but then Salem started showing up and I started spending lunch at the office, or with Kitsu. Sukuna always disappeared before us so we never bothered with her. Then Kurama started showing up two weeks after that. I’ve seen a lot of my office the last few weeks. And my apartment. The bloodlust almost feels… listless.”
He listened, at first finding he missed the sound. He frowned as she finished, taking in her eyes looking away.
“But hey, we should probably get back to them.” She forced her eyes to lift back to his. “If you still need our arrangement, I won’t say no. I’m sure I could benefit myself.”
“I do recall it worked exceptionally well in our case.”
She cracked a grin with him. “Can’t argue that.”
They turned their attention to someone coming down the restroom hallway. He instinctively grabbed her arms as her back was to the patron and moved her against the wall, out of the patron’s way. He found his grip still firm even after the male demon had passed by. His eyes caught hers again, almost seeking permission. Once he had them, had her consent, he tugged her to him.
She had almost forgotten the firm urgency that frequently backed his kisses. After a few delicate tests, this moment was no exception. She let him lose himself for a few moments more. She backed away, allowing only brief steals as they parted.
“How far do you live from here?” he asked against her lips.
“I walked here if that says anything.”
He growled and grinned. “The streets are mad this time of year. Good thing you’ll have an escort home.”
“Will I now?”
A sharp, familiar ahem drew them apart, letting them see Hyouga at the corner leading back to the dining room. She had her arms crossed, a brow quirked in amusement. “Your food is getting cold.”
“Right. Food.” Sha nodded and took a few steps towards the bend.
He followed her out, both feeling Hyouga’s eyes on their backs as he joined her stride. Once they returned to the dining room, he expected her to part from him. Instead, he felt the tips of her fingers tap his as they walked. Innocent to an outside perspective, but equivalent to fire scorching his skin.
Surviving six weeks in the wilds was easier than the next thirty minutes of his life.
