Yakusoku ~ Promise
~*~*~*~
"I don't believe it!" Yusuke exclaimed, giving Hiei a noogie. "And to think that you
committed suicide! Either that or you got on Mukuro's bad side…."
The Jaganshi growled and freed himself of the delinquent's grasp. I
smiled and helped him fix his now-messy hair. "No, Yusuke," I said,
"he's been in the Ningenkai for about a month."
"A month?!" he cried out, holding his head. "And you
didn't tell me?!"
Kuwabara appeared suddenly and slapped my lover on the back.
"You worried us, shrimp! We thought you got abducted by aliens!"
"I do not fall for your ningen beliefs that easily," Hiei
growled, holding his fists at his side. "Though it would
please me to see that happen to you."
I hid a smile behind my hand as their conversation gradually grew
into a fight. Things were like they had always been - exciting and unexpected.
I wish it would never change….
"I'm sure you guys want to settle this, but it's almost time," I said, stepping in between the two. They
exchanged a raspberry at each other before Kuwabara left the back room,
followed by Yusuke. I turned to my future husband and tapped his nose
playfully. "Ready for your escort?"
I received a blank look and remembered that Hiei wasn't the
brightest when it came to ningen customs. This is coming from the guy who asked
me to rammy him.
"The ‘bride' is supposed to walk down the aisle with a family
member," I explained. "And you're the bride in this wedding."
"Family?" he questioned. "I don't have any-"
"Oh, Hiei-san, there you are!"
The fire demon's complexion paled when he heard Yukina's gentle
voice behind him.
"Kurama…." he groaned.
"Have fun you two!" I said,
pinching his cheek.
"Ano….Kurama!"
"Sorry, love, I have to be out there. See ya!"
Swallowing my giggles, I ran behind the corner and listened to the
twin's conversation. I asked Yukina to do this before we exchanged vows so Hiei
wouldn't feel bad about missing his sister's wedding. One does not want to
start their life together with even more depression and guilt. I steadied my
breathing and listened for the lively chatter.
"Uh…."
Yes, very lively.
"Are you nervous, Oniisan?"
asked Yukina, brushing some lint off his red and black Chinese tunic. "You
should have seen Kuwabara-san before our wedding. He looked like he would pass
out while walking down the aisle-"
Her words stopped short when Hiei pulled her into his warm embrace.
"You shouldn't be here."
"Why not?"
"Because I missed your wedding! You
have every right to miss mine!"
The Koorime sighed and pushed elf elf out of the hug. She stared
into her brother's eyes and frowned.
"Oniisan….just because you weren't
there, it doesn't mean that I should do the same. You were stuck in a difficult
step in life, and I am glad that you used that time to figure out what went
wrong. And now that everything is back to normal, we can rejoice
together."
Hiei looked at her and nodded. He took his warded hand and traced
the outline of his sister's eye. "Did I do that….?"
"It's just a small scar," said Yukina, taking his arm.
"Shall we?"
Realizing that it was time, I stopped eavesdropping, straightened
my silver and gold tunic, and made my way up to the front.
The ceremony was small; we invited only about twenty people. Yusuke
and his wife, Keiko, their four children, Yukina and Kuwabara's two kids as
well (I decided to wait on telling Hiei about that), Atsuko, Genkai, even Koenma, Botan, and
George managed to take time off their work to attend. I stood in the back of Genkai's temple, where the garden was located, and waited
for my lover. I winked at Hiei as he walked down the aisle, a slight blush over
his face. He was never good around large groups of people, which was why I only
invited the important ones. At the end, Yukina gave him a soft kiss on his cheek
and left to sit by her husband. Startled by the gesture, the Jaganshi stood
frozen in his spot, forcing me to pull him over.
"Over here, baka," I whispered
jokingly, and he looked down.
Yusuke walked over and stood next to us, draping an arm over our shoulders
and leaning on them.
"So….ya wanna get married?"
"That's why we're here in the first place, Urameshi,"
Hiei said through clenched teeth. I smiled and took his hands in mine.
"Hai, Yusuke. We want to."
"Okay!" the detective said rather loudly. "Now, I'm
no….whacha-ma-callit…..the priest dude with the
book….I wasn't really paying attention during my wedding….I was looking at
Keiko's dress more-"
"I HEARD THAT YUSUKE!"
"Moving on!" He clapped his
hands together. "Who's the man in this?"
I giggled when Hiei's blush turned a deep crimson. "I
am…." I said.
"Right then. Kurama, do you take Hiei
as your wife - OW!"
"Don't blow it, Urameshi," my
lover said, retuning his hand to mine. The detective rubbed the growing bump on
his head and pouted.
"Kurama, do you take Hiei as your //husband//, to be with, to share with, to fight with, to laugh
with, to steal with, to care with, to die with, and to love with you as long as
you are true?"
I smiled at Hiei and nodded. "I do."
"Hiei, do you take Kurama as your husband, to be with, to
share with, to fight with, to laugh with, to steal with, to care with, to die
with, and to love with you as long as you are true?"
His grip on my hands tightened in a gentle squeeze. Doubts began to
appear in my mind. What if he said no? What if it had all been a joke just to
shatter my soul even more? What if-
"I do."
//Screw that, he's mine
now!// The Youko cheered.
"May your souls be bonded for this life and however many more
will come. You may now kiss the bride."
After Hiei gave him one more bump on the head, we wrapped our arms
around each other and joined our lips in a slow kiss. I felt excitement flood
within me as I deepened it. //We're together now.
We're finally a couple. We can
stay by each other's side and won't disappear from memory. Oh Hiei….//
I heard Yusuke cough. "Guys….it's
been five minutes."p>
"Has it?" I said after separating the kiss, sweatingdropping and panting a little. Hiei turned his face
down, which was now a deep, beet red color.
"We better get on to the party now," I added. "I
can't wait for our first dance…."
"Hn…."
~*~*~*~
I sighed and closed my eyes, tightening my arms around Hiei's
waist. We stood in the middle of the room, dancing to the song with the other
couples: Yusuke and Keiko, Kuwabara and Yukina (which I tried to stay away from
so Hiei couldn't see), even Botan and Koenma were
dancing. The atmosphere was beautiful….everyone seemed to vanish, making Hiei
the only person in the room. I rested my forehead on his and stared into his
fiery crimson eyes, loosing myself in them. I saw our whole future together:
resting in each other's arms as we take our last breaths, waking up again in
the Makai, building a house in the jungle-like forests, finding children and
adopting them as our own, becoming overlords of the Makai and joining our lands
together as one, and finally closing our eyes and wait to see the other again
in the next life….
"Ai shiteru, Hiei.
Always and forever."
He smiled - a real one, and leaned closer. "Ai
shiteru, Kurama. As long as you are the same baka kitsune, I will always love you."
Our lips touched in a kiss and stayed that way until the soft music
of the song ended.
//Will we think about
tomorrow like we think about now?
Can we survive it out there?
Can we make it somehow?
I guess I thought that this would never end
And suddenly it's like we're women and men
Will the past be a shadow that will follow us 'round?
Will these memories fade when I leave this town?
I keep, keep thinking that it's not goodbye
Keep on thinking it's a time to fly//
~*~*~*~
//Twenty years later…//
“Kurama…are you sure?”
I turned and gave a weak smile. “Hai,
I must. It would hurt if I didn’t.”
“Hn,” Hiei replied, and
disappeared in a black blur, leaving me alone under the sakura
tree. I walked over to the other side and faced a single slab of stone raised
from the ground. I went down on my knees and pressed my palms together in the
form of a prayer. I concentrated my youki into the
Earth, causing the vines to sprout honeysuckle flowers and the grass to grow
green once again. Feeling more comfortable with the new environment, I closed
my eyes and went through everything that happened for the past fifteen years.
My confession of love that night, Hiei rejecting me, moving
out of everyone’s life and memory, becoming a stripper, drinking my life away,
believing that I was nothing more…
…the day Hiei came back…his voice whispering those words my
heart hungered for, my hands bruising his body the same way he did to me, his
memories flooding through my head, the night we finally came together, our
vows, our wedding and what we had now…
I placed a single red rose over the grave and stood up. The
air seemed cleaner somehow, more reviving, more hopeful. I wasn’t blind
anymore; I could see the changes that the world had made. For better and for
worse, it had changed into something completely new. Had it always been like
this? I guess Time will let me find out.
Hiei was waiting for me at the cemetery entrance. A few
bangs of gray covered his eyes, proof of his age. My hands tangled through my
own hair, feeling the few gray stands occupying my side-locks and wondering if
the Youko’s hair was still as pure. We laced our fingers together and began our
journey to the nearest portal, thinking about what the Makai had in store for
us. I inhaled the fresh air, looking up at the sky and smiling to the
Heavens.
“I’m ready, Kaasan…”
