.Chapter 3: Hiei meets the "Family"
He doesn't react as badly as you feared. Instead he sits down in the chair and looks up irately at you. "What do you want me to do about it?" You understand what he’s rally asking is do you expect to be mates now. He doesn't sound to keen on the idea, which is perfectly fine with you; you're not keen on it either.
"I need to take you back to my pack. Once they accept you as the father of my pups, you're free to go." He seems to think this over a little, and you feel the knot in your stomach slowly winding itself tighter. If he refuses…what then? You can't bear the idea of being submissive your whole life. You won't!
"So I go with you to Reikai, prove myself to your pack, then leave?" You nod rapidly. Put that way…no strings attached! How could he say no? "Then what becomes of my child?"
"My pups will stay with me and the pack," you tell him, emphasizing the 'my'. How dare he call them 'his'! Whatever this sudden possessiveness is within you, you’re not sure, but it feels good, and you let it show on your face. Sure you didn't make them alone, but you're the one carrying them now. A slow, soft growl trickles up from your throat at the thought of him taking your children away. 'I'll kill him first,' you think.
He narrows his eyes at your motherly display, and makes that soft ‘hn’ noise on the roof of his mouth. "I'll go," he says just before meeting your eyes. "We'll discuss the rest later."
'We'll discuss it later my tail!' you think, but since you're need him to comply, you agree. There's no way the pack will allow him to take your children, and once you're with them they can protect you. That thought alone gives you comfort. 'The pack is fierce in protecting it's own,' Kami says. It's true.
*~*~*~*
You travel quickly to Reikai, slowed down only by your occasional morning sickness, which has thankfully grown less and less frequent. Once on home turf again you scent the air, and find your pack. Hiei has been eerily silent the entire time- not that he ever said much before. Something about him being the father of your children has not quite yet sunk in, and you're waiting for the full weight to drop. He doesn't even look at you, but you've caught sight of something in his eyes, a thoughtful, calculating look, and it unsettles you.
But you can't worry with it right now. So you don't.
They have settled again, and the sentries greet you as you arrive. You smile and acknowledge them as they give Hiei a suspicious once over. Normally they would search him for weapons, but the entire pack knows why he's here, and that he may be in need of them. You briefly explained on the trip what would be required of him to prove himself to the pack.
"Either endurance or fighting," you said, "to prove you could protect the pups." He'd scoffed at that, and you knew he was more than capable of taking care of himself and anyone he decided to take under his wing. Not that he seemed the type to take anyone under his wing.
Okami is the first within the pack to greet you, rushing at you and scooping you up in his arms, spinning you around. "___________(your name)-chan! You're back quickly!" You snort and shove him off you. Hiei is standing to the side, hands in his pockets glaring fiercely at your brother.
"Hiei, this is Okami, my brother."
"Good to finally meet the man my sister let near her. Many a brave wolf has tried and found himself sore for a week after." Your brother is grinning and talking like he's just met your boyfriend. He has no idea how wrong he is. Hiei looks your brother over once and then away. He doesn't speak.
Your brother gives you a questioning look, and to avoid answering to it, you hurriesly ask, "Okami I'm going to take him to Kami-sama, will you hold his katana?"
Hiei does react to that.
"No one takes my katana," he says, wrapping his fingers around it.
Okami puffs himself up to the challenge and starts to reply otherwise. You grab Hiei and pull him away before hissing, "I'm taking you to the pack leader. You cannot take weapons with you. My brother won't harm it.
Hiei scowls. "I don't like how rough was with you."
"What?"
Hiei glances over at your brother disapprovingly. "He's too rough with you in your condition. The child could have been hurt." You scoff and shake your head.
"The katana?" you press. Hiei struts up to Okami and faster than your eyes can follow, pulls the sword and places it against your brother's throat. Okami swallows and tries to look fierce and unafraid, but you can tell otherwise. Smirking, Hiei lowers the blade and hands it over, hilt first.
"Don't mess it up, baka," he warns darkly, and then starts off towards Kami's tent. You're brother gives you a look that says quite clearly, 'We'll talk about this later' and you two take off to see Kami.
*~*~*~*
Kami feeds the fire in her tent, carefully not watching you and Hiei seated on the opposite side. After she's done stalling (you can tell she's trying to gage Hiei's scent by the way her breathing changes, grow deeper) she smiles at you both and sits down. The fire crackles pleasantly, but it's too hot for it. The fire is a custom for meetings of importance, and you wish it wasn't because of the sweat running in deep rivulets down your face and chest. Hiei doesn't seem at all bothered. It bugs you.
"I have often wondered what manner of man would take a lover the way ________(your name) has chosen to be taken." No malice, no condescension and yet there is something of a judgement in her voice. Hiei notices, you can tell by the change in his posture- he sits up a little straighter, eyes narrowed a little more, and the air about him cackles with violent potential- it almost makes you want him right then and there. You may not like him very much at the moment, but after six months he still makes you shiver.
"Are you willing to endure the challenge set forth by the pack to be named Alpha, and accepted as her mate?" Hiei opens his mouths to speak, but Kami interrupts, "Mate in name, not in truth. As I understand it, neither of you want that sort of arrangement." This time she sounds amused, as if she knows something you don't. You sure hope not in this case.
Hiei smirks, and it seems to startle Kami as well as yourself. "You know nothing of me, onna, so do not presume. I'll tackle any challenge you set for me, but let's do it. Don't waste anymore of my time."
Kami's eyes slide to you, but you are gaping at Hiei. He just called Kami-sama 'onna'! How dare he! How could he? Was he mad!? Hiei turns those molten eyes in your direction and looks amused at your horror. You might have ignored Kami-sama all evening if not for Hiei turning towards her. Startled back to yourself you look at her, swallowing the indignation you feel on her behalf as she seems unfazed.
"________(your name) will you accept the pack's ruling?"
"Of course, Kami-sama. I trust in the pack's judgement." She nods approvingly at you and rises gracefully. Without a word to either of you she walks out of the tent.
Hiei rises to do the same, but you snatch his arm. "We've not been dismissed." He glares at your hand and you let go, glaring right back. Then he walks out. You wait another moment and stand yourself, walking outside to find the pack Alphas gathering. Okami comes up to you and tells you, you have to leave.
"It's pack law. You're not Alpha yet. We'll summon you when a decision's been made." He walks away from you and for the first time in your life, you don't want to listen to pack law. It's your body isn't it? It's your children!
You consider barging in and demanding to stay. They are only a few feet away, and several are watching you, waiting for you to go before pack business begins. Hiei is among them, hands in his pockets, silently daring you to try something. And just like that you loser ner nerve. It's pack law, and you're whole life you've been raised knowing one thing. Pack law is final. If you don't abide it, you could be banished, and nothing terrifies you more than losing your home, your "family".
With a frustrated grunt you walk away. But soon your walk becomes a run, and you are fleeing as fast as you can away from the pack, the circle, and the fate that seems to be out of your hands. Ground flows beneath your feet, and the forest around you stretches out of your way. A desperate howl locks in your throat, and you wait until you are out of sight to loose it, falling to your knees and clenching your fists with the force of your emotions. Tears scald down your cheeks, and you bat them away angrily.
"It's not fair," you whisper. You've never in your life thought to question pack law, and worse yet, you've never felt so helpless. 'It's not fair' seems such a childish complaint, but it isn't fair, and you can't do anything about it.
