AN: I have added a good bit to this chapter. I have changed the kitchen scene to be more Japanese, utensils, food, and such. I have added to the argument in the living room, making it more emotional. I tried to make sure I have used all the correct punctuation, added indents, and used the right words where words were similar to the word being used. Thank you again for reading.

Chapter 3 of 18
Friends Again
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
After a few minutes when sleep did not come, Kurama turned on his side to study the smaller demon. Hiei was stiff as a board, just staring at the ceiling. He looked very angry to Kurama, who just watched him lost in thought. He admitted to himself that he may have gone a little to far with his teasing, but he had been so thrilled that Hiei was actually reacting to him in such a way. Now in hindsight, he wished he hadn’t even bothered being flirtatious because he may have ruined what little friendship they had left. Kurama was brought back from his musing by Hiei's deep voice.
"Why are you staring at me, Fox?"
"I was trying to figure out what I could have done to make you so mad at me." Kurama offered a one shoulder shrug.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Hiei growled ominously, which did not intimidate the redhead in the least.
"Please, don't underestimate my intelligence, Hiei. Ever since that night I woke up with your hand on my back without permission, you've been very distant, more so then usual anyway. I can’t understand why you would be so mad when under demon standards I’m the one that should be furious. I thought we were friends." Kurama replied with just a touch of hurt in his voice.
Hiei let out a defeated breath and turned to face the fox. "I don't underestimate you, Kurama. You're far too cunning even for a fox and I'm not mad at you either. I just have a lot of things on my mind."
"Are we still friends then?"
"Yes."
"Then you can tell me everything that is bothering you. We can see if we can come up with a solution to your problems together."
"I don't think that would be wise." Hiei replied, slowly shaking his head.
"You can trust me, you can tell me anything. I won't judge it in any way, I promise." Kurama offered, his smile was small, but hopeful.
"That's not the problem, Fox. I know I can trust you, I can trust you with my life, but I just can't trust you with this."
"Well, I'm not going to push you. When you're ready to talk I will be available to listen."
"Hn." Hiei grunted, turning over to his back and closing his eyes. The conversation was over as far as he was concerned.
Kurama didn’t fail to notice that during their little exchange, even after he mentioned it, Hiei avoided the whole incident about his back. The redhead could guess that was probably one of the problems, but he had no clue of what else could be bothering the fire demon. Kurama turned to his other side and drifted to sleep too, still worried about his friendship with Hiei.

Kurama slowly awoke the next morning. He stretched leisurely after kicking the covers off. He nearly rolled off of the bed though, when he heard the deep voice next to him.
"Finally awake, Fox?"
"Hiei!" Kurama was a bit loud as he turned to face his friend.
"What?" Hiei replied with a smirk on his face. He knew he had startled his fox.
"You know what! I wasn't expecting you to still be here."
"I can't go anywhere without my clothes."
"Well……." Kurama smiled, sitting up slowly. He turned fully towards the fire demon. "Maybe, I don't want to give your clothes back. That way I can keep you here."
"No one keeps me anywhere." Hiei spat angrily, sitting up as well.
"That is very true." Kurama laughed, that tone of the fire demon's voice had no effect on him. "I only meant that I know as soon as you get the clothes back you will be gone."
"So?"
"It's just that you're the only one that really understands me. I miss the talks that we had late at night when you came to visit. I know you probably don't believe me, but I do." Kurama shrugged with a little smile, but it quickly faded.
"Your right, I don't believe you." Hiei narrowed his eyes at the fox. "There is nothing to miss from our talks."
"Whatever." Kurama mumbled as he put his feet over the side of the bed, refusing to look at the other demon. He had opened up a little to Hiei and it had been thrown back in his face. "I'll go put your clothes in the dryer. They should be ready in about 30 minutes." The fox got up and left the room without another word or look back.
Hiei actually felt a bit guilty and wasn’t sure how to handle this feeling. He knew he had hurt the fox's feelings with his indifference and hostility. After a few minutes, it became aware to the demon that Kurama wasn't coming back. Hiei got up and went to look for him. He found the redhead sitting on the couch, staring out the sliding glass doors, he was not acknowledged at all. Hiei huffed, sitting down next to the fox. There was no way he was going to apologize, well not technically.
"When your clothes come out of the dryer, I'll fix them. Then you will be able to leave." Kurama did not even bother looking at him, his voice completely flat. He was hurt damn it and he was so tired of being hurt by his friend, but at this point was ‘friend’ even the right term to use for the fire demon.
"Fox, I……."
"I'm sorry, Hiei. I never want you to think I'm forcing you to do anything. Last night was an exception because you badly needed help.”
“Fox!” Hiei was louder this time.
Kurama kept talking as if he hadn’t heard him. “I promise that will not happen ever again, bleed to do death if you want. I will not say another word about anything concerning you."
“Kurama, why…..” Hiei tried again. The redhead’s words felt like punches to the gut and he sure as hell didn’t like it.
Kurama also again ignored him. “Since you dislike my presence so much and I am so untrustworthy I expect this will be the last time you are in my home. Please take with you the few items you have here when you leave, my plants will not let you back inside. I also….”
"Be quiet for a fucking minute, would you?!" Hiei practically yelled, finally interrupting the redhead. He’d had enough of words that cut deeper then any sword. He certainly hadn’t realized just how badly he had hurt his fox. He needed to fix this before the redhead tore everything between them apart. "I believe what you said.”
“No you don’t and apparently you never have.” A self depreciating chuckle left Kurama as a single tear fell from sad green eyes. “I have been such a damn fool.”
“Stop this, you know that isn’t true!” The situation Hiei found himself caught in was really dangerous. He had never seen the fox cry in either form and never wanted to see it again.
“You have no idea how much of a fool I have been and now you never will.” Kurama sounded so broken.
Hiei got the feeling that the fox was talking about something entirely different than trust at this point. He needed this to stop! He reached out and fisted the redhead’s shirt, yanking him sideways. It had the reaction he wanted.
Kurama caught himself and turned enough to finally make eye contact, his voice was raspy. “What?!”
Hiei actually winced as he looked into green eyes of shattered glass. He spoke words he had never said aloud to anybody else. “I’m sorry, I was being thoughtless. I believe you and I trust you like I have trusted no other, including Mukuro.”
"Thank you for that." Kurama turned to fully face the fire demon. He wasn’t smiling like usual, but his features had softened a little, his eyes not as shiny. That apology was not enough, he wanted more. Youko Kurama had never broken down in front of anyone and for that he wanted the fire demon to feel just as vulnerable as he felt. He was owed that much!
Hiei took a deep breath to fortify his resolve to continue. “I also know you would never force me into anything, unless it was for my own good."
“Agreed.”
Hiei grit his teeth, the fox wasn’t giving him even an inch, his punishment for humiliating him. The words were low, but he managed to get them out. “Thank you for helping me last night, despite my unacceptable behavior.”
“You are welcome.” Kurama’s voice sounded a bit more normal, but his eyes still showed emotional pain.
Hiei sighed in defeat, this was all he had left. “Again I am sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I will try not to repeat this mistake.”
“I’ll accept that.” Kurama nodded once before standing. At least his voice was very close to being normal again. "Would you like some breakfast?"
"Yes." Hiei replied quietly. He couldn’t remember ever having breakfast with the redhead. In that moment he suddenly realized it was something he regretted. Another mark against him for years of his disregard for the care and help the fox has given him. He would not let it carry on like this, things had to change, mostly he had to change.
"Fine then, I'll go start on it." Kurama quickly went into the kitchen. He pulled out a small pack of pork belly slices, a carton of eggs, a bowl of rice from the previous night, a square of tofu, and miso paste from the refrigerator.
A small amount of water was added to the leftover rice and then the bowl went into the microwave for reheating. Kurama started on miso soup next. He added water, dry dashi stock, and dried wakame seaweed to a pot and sat it on the stove to boil. He just happened to glance over his shoulder to see Hiei standing in the doorway, watching him intently. This was new.
"You can watch TV if you want." Kurama mentioned as he cut the slices of pork belly into bite size pieces and then put it into a frying pan on the stove.
Kurama briefly wondered about their situation. He had been ready to throw it all away, so tired of being emotionally hurt by the fire demon’s flippant words and actions, but here he was right back to taking care of him. He really couldn’t stop himself, therefor he truly was a fool.
"I don’t want to watch anything." Hiei took a step into the room. He wasn’t sure of what he was doing, he just didn’t want to let the fox out of his sight.
"I guess you can keep me company, if you want. Pull out a chair and have a seat." Kurama replied as he got out a good size bowl. He started cracking eggs into it and was a bit startled when Hiei appeared beside him, looking into the bowl.
"What are you doing to the eggs?" Hiei asked suspiciously.
"I was going to make rolled eggs, but I changed my mind. I will be making scrambled instead, it’s a little easier." Kurama replied, reaching into the drawer beside him and pulling out a set of large chopsticks.
“I usually just knock off one end and suck the raw insides down. Will scrambled be good?"
"I know you haven’t had breakfast with me before because you are usually gone by now, but just trust me, Hiei.” Kurama added emphasis on every word, salt in a wound per say, for him though he still had to say it. “I know you'll like the eggs when I get done with them."
"Hn." Hiei didn’t bother to really answer, because he agreed with the fox that he sort of deserved it.
"Hand me some milk, please?" Kurama asked, pointing towards the refrigerator.
"Okay." Hiei went to the refrigerator and opened the door. He picked up the quart of milk and handed it to the fox. He watched carefully while Kurama put a small splash of milk into the bowl of eggs and then filled up two waiting glasses. The empty carton was tossed into the recycle bin. Miso paste was stirred into the boiling pot along with bit size pieces of tofu.
Kurama then returned to the bowl of eggs. He added some fresh herbs and a pinch of sugar before he commenced to beating the contents of the bowl using the chopsticks in his hand. When it was all mixed, he poured the entire bowl into the pan that had the sizzling browned pork belly in it. Kurama glanced to his side, seeing Hiei watching his every move. A genuine smile formed on his lips when a thought occurred to him. He stepped to the side and held the chopsticks out to the smaller demon.
"You do it."
"What?" Hiei asked at bit surprised. He only knew how to cook on a spit over an open fire.
"All you have to do is keep stirring it, the stove will do the rest." Kurama put the chopsticks into the smaller hand. Hiei eyed the long pieces of wood, then the pan with wariness before slowly reaching out his arm. After a few scrapes through the pan, he could see little lumps already forming.
"You can stir the eggs a little faster." Kurama had a smile on his face as he put his hand over the other demon's and guided the motions. He was so intent on keeping the food from burning, he did not see the slight pink slip across Hiei's cheeks. "Like this."
"Hn." Hiei barely nodded as he watched his and the fox's hands. He couldn't believe how embarrassed and shy he was acting. He usually just stated or took what he wanted, but not with the fox, he couldn't bring himself to do either. Especially not now, what he and the fox had between them was too fragile at the moment. He glanced to the redhead when he removed his hand, turned off the burner under the soup, and then walked over to a cabinet by the sink. When Kurama turned around, he flashed a little smile after catching Hiei watching him. The fire demon was happy to note that his friend’s green eyes was finally back to normal, the hurt and sadness was gone.
"Breakfast is almost finished." Kurama placed two large bowls and two smaller bowls on the counter beside the stove. He divided up the rice into the larger bowls and then filled the smaller bowls with steaming miso soup, while Hiei continued stirring the eggs and pork belly. After a couple of more minutes, Kurama turned off the last burner on the stove.
"The eggs and pork are done." The fox announced as he took the chopsticks from his friend, picked up the pan, and divided the contents into the larger bowls over the rice.
Kurama reached into the cabinet under the counter and pulled out two wooden trays. He sat them on the counter before filling each tray with a glass of milk, a bowl of miso soup, a pair of chopsticks, a napkin, and a bowl of rice covered with scrambled eggs and fried pork belly. He picked up one of the trays and handed it to the other demon. He then picked up his own tray of food.
"Let's go into the main room so we can watch some TV." Kurama suggested.
"Hn." Was Hiei's only reply as he followed the fox from the kitchen. He didn’t really matter to him where they ate.
Kurama sat his tray down on the low table. He dropped to the floor, grabbing the remote control, and flipping on the TV. He put it on one of the satellite movie channels, there was usually something good playing on there, Hiei might even watch. The fire demon followed the fox's example and sat down beside him. He eyed the food through narrowed eyes. He was not sure about the food, but he did trust Kurama.
"Just try it, Hiei." Kurama said between bites, glancing to his friend.
"Hn."
Kurama swallowed a bite of food and then chuckled lightly. "I know you have more vocabulary then your ‘patented Hn’. We can't actually talk unless you use more then one syllable words and I will no longer accept being in one sided conversations."
"Fine! This food looks suspicious." Hiei growled, poking at the food with his chopsticks.
"I'm not going to poison you!" Kurama’s voice had deepened, and it was clear he was offended.
"I know that! It's just that…." Hiei started, but was cut off when he found a pair of chopsticks full of eggs occupying his mouth. Kurama pulled the eating utensils out leaving the food in Hiei's slightly open mouth. The demon was about to spit it out when it finally registered in his brain that the food tasted really good. His eyes widened a fraction, which did not go unnoticed by the fox.
"See I told you that you would like it." Kurama said with a smug smile on his face before taking another bite of his food.
"So you did, Fox." Hiei agreed, taking a bite of his food as well. It was very good, but he would never admit it to the redhead.
Kurama just kept on eating, accepting the small compliment from the fire demon, even though it was never actually verbalized. He would glance to the side every little bit, letting a small smile touch his lips when he saw Hiei practically shoveling the food into his mouth. They continued eating in comfortable silence.
When they were done, Kurama took the trays of dirty dishes to the kitchen. After he loaded all the dirty dishes in the dishwasher and set it to wash, he wiped the counters before he went back into the main room. He found Hiei lying on the couch with his back against the armrest and his hands laced behind his head, watching some kind of sci-fi movie intently, it looked to be about ghosts and maybe demons. The fox just shook his head and was about to sit down on the other end of the couch when the dryer buzzer went off.
"That will be your clothes. Give me a few minutes to fix the cuts in your clothes and than you can be on your way." Kurama somehow managed to keep his voice level. Despite the argument, he still wanted the fire demon to stay.
"Good." Hiei nodded, turning his attention back to the TV. His next remarks left the redhead in a state of surprise. “But my clothes can wait until later. Come sit with me, this ningen movie is okay.”
Kurama briefly wondered if he needed to call Koenma to see if hell had frozen over. Deciding that he really didn’t care if it had, he took up the fire demon’s offer. He sat down on the couch and took up a position much like his friend, their legs brushing slightly.
After only a few minutes, Kurama shifted suddenly, sitting up, bringing his knees to his chest, and wrapping his arms around them. He then rested his chin on his knees, staring at the fire demon. He had a decision to make. Hiei had felt the movement and was watching him out of the corner of his eye, but was trying his best to ignore the intense stare.
After awhile, Hiei grew very uncomfortable and finally turned to the redhead. "Why is it you look at me like that?"
"I'm trying to decide if I should risk asking you what I want to ask you." Kurama whispered, his eyes were soft and hopeful.
"What is it?" Hiei asked, it was much like a whisper too. It had taken him a long time, too damn long, to figure out that the fox’s green eyes were very expressive, giving away to much about his emotions.
"Would you stay with me today?"
"What? Why?"
"I don't have anything to do. We could catch up on our missed talks or something……." Kurama shrugged as his voice trailed off, glancing away from those intense red eyes. He had greatly missed Hiei and the time they spent together in these few months when they hadn’t talked. He didn’t want them to grow any further apart, if the morning’s argument was any indication.
The fire demon thought about it for a moment. He had nothing else to do and he had missed his fox. That was also why he hadn't left before Kurama even awoke. He knew where his clothes were, all he had to do was raise his energy to dry them, but he still hadn't gotten them and left. He wanted to be here with him.
Hiei sat up and let a small curve on his lips appear. "I'll stay with you today."
Before Kurama could catch himself, he was on his knees hugging the fire demon tightly, actually dazing him. When they both came to their senses, they jerked apart not looking at each other. An uncomfortable silence descended on the room, neither demon knowing what to say or do. Now Kurama had done essentially what the fire demon had done to him, intimately touched without permission. He supposed they were even now. He wondered though how an irritable fire demon could make Youko Kurama feel like a demon teenager whose balls had just dropped.
Hiei was glancing everywhere, but at those beautiful green eyes filled with happiness. His sight happened to fall on the fox's hand. He almost winced seeing the circle of deep teeth marks marring the once flawless skin, the fang holes were especially prominent. He had completely forgotten about biting the redhead and of course Kurama hadn’t brought it up either. He was embarrassed and now he felt bad too.
All Kurama had been trying to do was help him and he had acted viciously. Hiei thought back a moment, quickly realizing the fox had not taken care of the wound the previous night, all he did was take care of him. He was now feeling very guilty. He didn't have the plant healing knowledge of Kurama or the healing powers of his sister, but he still did the only thing he could. He was going to try to convey how sorry he truly was without saying it. Hiei reached out taking Kurama's hand in his. He slowly brought the hand forward while he leaned in. When he was near enough to the hand, Hiei stuck out his tongue and licked at the wound.
Kurama smiled softly, not trusting his own voice with words. He accepted the fire demon's apology; nothing really needed to be said at this point. The fox tightened his hold on Hiei's hand and was startled when his friend's hand tightened too, they were willingly holding hands. Hiei stopped licking and locked eyes with Kurama. He felt it, this was his chance. Casting caution to the wind, he applied only the slightest bit of pressure and then pulled the fox towards him, and he came without any resistance. Their faces were mere inches apart when the completely enchanting scene was broken by the loud ringing of a phone. They searched each other's faces, before the fox pulled away with a creative Makai curse, jumped up, and answered the phone quite rudely.
"WHAT!" Kurama yelled into the receiver.
Hiei heard only one side of the conversation, but he was thinking of every evil thing he could do to the person who had interrupted them. If it had only rang a little later, but he quickly dismissed that thought, thinking of what that could have interrupted. He didn't like that idea at all. Maybe, just maybe another chance would be presented to him.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to yell."
Pause.
"No, you're not disturbing me."
Pause.
"Yes."
Pause.
"Yes, I understand."
Pause.
"Thank you for calling."
Pause.
"Yes, Goodbye." Kurama hung up the phone and turned back to the couch to find Hiei back in his original position. Kurama just rolled his eyes towards the ceiling. That was just great. He sure as hell didn’t like when things changed from one extreme to anther in a matter of minutes.
