The females had to do a double take as they arrived at what could only be described as a mansion nestled on a cliff.
“Home sweet home,” Salem said as they approached the stone staircase carved into the rocks leading down to the home.
“You live here?” Hyouga said.
“On the rare occasions. It’s been in my family for a long time. Because of the size I don’t really like living there on my own, so it’s more a vacation home. For now, it’s a seven bedroom, but it’s actually eight. I converted one into a library. However, I’ve got a studio in the city. Whenever we’re anchored nearby I retire to here or there. Sleeping in a bed is much better than sleeping on a cot in the barracks of that miserable ship.”
“I’d live here all the time if it was in my family. It’s beautiful. And surprisingly modern-looking.”
He rubbed his neck. “Yeah, my parents were obsessed with different human cultures. So their house reflects it, rest their souls.” He took a key from his pocket as they took the wooden stairs of the deck that wrapped partially around the home. “It has a great view of the shoreline.”
He let them inside to a very large, open living room. A hallway stood off to the left and in front of them, letting them see the hint of a staircase on the right. Their attention was immediately kept to the living room as a voice spoke up from a semi-circle of furniture. “I know she’s getting tired of all the waiting. I can’t go back just yet. The construction plans still aren’t complete. I need to go over a few more things with Enki now that he has the schools almost done. Can you just deliver the usual message to everyone?”
“Of course, Yusuke.”
The two in the living room looked up at them as they approached. “Well well, a little blue-haired birdie told me you’d be coming. I just didn’t know if I could believe it.” The black-haired male got up to stand in front of them. He looked like he was sizing them up. “So you’re my replacements. Good to see Koenma got smart and hired the right species for the job. Though…” He turned his attention to Hiei as he stalked around them all to the far side of the room, where a row of stools sat in front of a divide peeking into the kitchen. “Damn man, I didn’t know they made them smaller than you.”
Sha smirked despite the quip at her stature. “I heard you were quite the eloquent one, Yusuke. I’ve also read your case files. You did great work in your time.” She extended her hand. “My name is Sha. These are my friends and squad mates. The tall one with lavender hair and dog ears is Hyouga. The fox is Kitsu. And the one with small horns on her head is Sukuna.”
He took her gesture. “Well you know the guys that brought you here I guess. And you know I’m Yusuke.” He jerked his thumb to the couch that the other man had been sitting on. “And the red-head over there is Kurama.”
“So just how many people are on this case?” Kitsu asked.
“Looks like more than enough,” Salem said. “Go ahead and sit.” He left to the adjoining kitchen, preparing something from the sounds coming through the dividing wall.
They each took a seat wherever they could in the semi-circle made of a sofa, two love seats, and two armchairs. “So what did Pacifier-breath say about the case to you guys?” Yusuke asked.
Sha snorted at the nickname. “Not much I’m afraid. The file he gave us from Mukuro said that they believed a portal to be running along the same stream as the one where Human and Demon World are closely connected.”
“News to us that she sent word to Koenma.” Yusuke looked around. “You know anything about this, Hiei?”
“If I did I would have brought it to your attention.” He looked on from his place on the stool far-across from the females. “The only thing I know is that we were going to be pulled out of the area in a day if we could find nothing else. Now I see why.”
“I’d figure as her second she’d tell you all her plans,” Sha said with a puzzled look.
“Not everything, it would seem.”
Salem returned with a large canter of wine and a few glasses. “Think it’s going to be a long night of comparing notes. You ladies are welcomed to stay here as long as the investigation takes.”
“Oh, no, we couldn’t do that,” Sha answered. “You have a wonderful home, but I live in the city, actually. It wouldn’t take long to get home.”
“Wait, Koenma lets you take breaks from your mission to go home?” Yusuke scoffed and reached for a glass. “In my day he’d toss me into a portal and tell me to get it done.”
“Well, usually we’d keep at it for several days, but in this situation, we have so many people on it already—“ She felt a buzz in her pants pocket and pulled out a two-way communication device. The screen lit up with Koenma’s face. “So what do you think? I know you’re watching us like a creep.”
He cleared his throat. “I agree with Salem on this one. For the duration of the case, you should all stick together to work on a solution to the case.”
“Are there any new leads?”
“None yet. Mukuro has officially pulled away from the investigation. She is pulling her men in the morning now that you are on the case.”
“What?” Salem snatched the communicator, ignoring Sha’s protest. “When did she say this?”
“Just now. That’s why I’m calling. She said to send her two missing guard dogs back to her to report in. Her words, by the way, not mine.”
“Tell her to fuck off. I quit.”
They looked to the barstool as Hiei got off and went down the left hallway. A door slammed not long after.
“The hell’s gotten into him?” Yusuke asked, tipping wine into each of the glasses.
“Long story,” Salem answered. “Well, not really long but—“
Sha snatched the communicator back. “In more polite terms, please tell her we need their assistance.”
“Yes, that’s what I had thought. I’ll call her back and pass along the information. Debate what you can. I’ll be turning the monitors off for the night and checking in with you in the morning.”
“Got it. Over and out.” The screen of the communicator went dark and she shoved it back into her pants pocket. “So should we grab the wanderer for information or leave him alone?”
“Probably should leave him be for now,” Salem answered, taking one of the filled glasses.
“But doesn’t he work under Mukuro?” She took a sip from her own glass of wine.
“Under, over, not so much either recently.”
She felt herself choke on the alcohol fumes.
“I mean, what?” He crossed his legs, resting his head in his hand while looking to Hyouga. “So, how are you?”
“Reverse a little bit.” Sha put her glass down. “He is her second, right? Or is it more than that?”
“Ah, I- um. Yusuke, help me out here?”
The black-haired man was hiding a snigger behind his hand. He took a deep breath to swallow it. “Last I knew they had something on the side when they weren’t talking shop, so to say. You know more than us though. I haven’t kept much in contact with him since the tournament.”
“Ah, of course.” He sighed and took a larger swig from his glass. “All I know I can say where he won’t kill me is that he wasn’t kept in the loop of everything. So most likely what I know is the extent of what he knows. Which isn’t much.”
“Start with what you know then, and we’ll figure it out from there,” Hyouga suggested.
“Gimme a second.” He finished off his wine and exited through the hallway Hiei had disappeared down. The resulting silence weighed heavily on them.
Yusuke cleared his throat. “So how is working for Spirit World these days? Do they still pick you up off the street in the middle of the day for a case or what?”
“Actually, we work most of the day in our own offices,” Kitsu said. “We help with the filing and records when they don’t have us in the field.”
“Technically we’re on probation,” Sukuna added. “We’re doing this for a while until our debts are paid.”
Yusuke scoffed. “Sounds better than my life.”
Sha gave a smile around her glass. “Yes, it wasn’t always convenient for you and your team. I know one of the cases you were pulled in the middle of a date.”
“Ah, yeah. That one took a long time to recover from.”
“But once Keiko was told everything, she understood your absences,” Kurama supplied. “Not so easily at first, but she was always there to support you, just as she is now.”
“I’m sure wedding planning is keeping her busy.”
He hummed in amusement. “Yes. Although it’s also gotten the attention of Yukina.”
Yusuke burst out laughing. “Oh man, do not let her brother know about that.”
“I do not harbor a death wish.”
Just before Sha opened her mouth, Salem returned with a pile of papers and two more bottles of wine. “Strap in for what will probably be a pretty short yet aggravating couple of hours.”
