A/N: You few readers can drop me a review or two if you want... I do like getting them... not that I'll stop writing if I don't but still. Also, if anyone's interested I've written and posted a PWP featuring Jin and Touya. *shameless plugging over* alright, onto the chapter!
Hiei cradled Kurama’s body and continued to feed the fox energy all day. He’d also taken charge of slowly trying to rehydrate the redhead by giving him a steady trickle of ice chips and occasionally some protein drink concoction so that he didn’t have to wake up to get liquid and something closer to food with actual nutrients. Yukina had come back several times to continue healing the wounds Kurama had that she hadn’t been able to take care of in one session, such as his improperly healed bones and missing pieces of leg. She also forced her brother to take a break around noon and forced him to eat and drink something so that he had enough energy to provide for Kurama.
It hadn’t escaped Hiei’s attention that much of the energy he was providing was going to the twins Kurama was carrying but he had a feeling that was his fox’s doing. Even unconscious Kurama was the type to sacrifice his own recovery to make sure his children survived. Hiei tried very hard to be annoyed with that but found he couldn’t be. It was just so… Kurama, that he was simply mildly exasperated instead. Much like when Kurama would insist on tending any and all of Hiei’s wounds first after a mission even if Kurama was equally injured. “He wake up yet?” Yusuke asked quietly as he came into the room around dinnertime. Hiei gave a small shake of his head and Yusuke sighed before sitting down next to the couple. “We tried to track Karasu down but the damn crow’s dropped off the radar. We’ll keep an eye out for him though. He can’t hide forever,” Yusuke informed, knowing Hiei would want to know so that he could go out and kill the crow himself. Hiei remained quiet and just continued to carefully drip some more protein liquid thing his sister had given him into Kurama’s slightly parted mouth. A moment later, Hiei felt Yusuke starting to channel his own energy into both himself and Kurama. He glanced over and Yusuke grinned some. “You both need it,” he replied before Hiei could say anything. The short fire demon grunted some and went back to what he was doing. If it hadn’t been for the oaf trying the same thing earlier (albeit only with Kurama and not including Hiei) he might have been a bit more surprised. And it did give him a bit of relief. The steady and large draw from providing Kurama and the twins with energy was very near draining him of what he had. “Called Shiori a little while ago.” This instantly got attention from the fire demon. He hadn’t intended on telling Shiori anything until Kurama had at least woken up again. “Don’t worry,” Yusuke said when the Hiei gave him a slightly disapproving look. “I only told her there had been a break in the case and the police thought they might be close to finding Ku-Shuichi. She’s been so worried and all I wanted to give her a little bit of good news.” Hiei grunted again and put the empty cup to the side to stroke back Kurama’s hair again. “He’s looking better,” Yusuke ventured softly. “The steady stream of energy is letting his body heal faster,” Hiei replied, finally allowing Yusuke’s persistence to draw him into actually speaking. “It will take longer for him to recover his weight,” he added. “We’ll get him fixed up. Kurama’s tough, he’ll bounce back,” Yusuke said confidently. Hiei nodded a little in agreement. Though looking down at Kurama now it was hard to imagine. Even having seen Kurama fighting with gaping holes in his stomach and win it was hard to see him as anything but frail. Silence filled the room for several minutes before Yusuke looked over at the small fire demon. “You know they might be yours…” Yusuke ventured. Hiei scowled some, knowing instantly what the detective was referring to but not wanting to get into that topic in the least. “If he’s been pregnant five months he might have been pregnant before Karasu took him and it’s not like twins don’t run in your family or anything,” Yusuke continued despite the scowl and slight glare he got. Yusuke sighed a bit and shook his head. “You have to admit there’s a chance and a chance is better than nothing at all.” “Karasu wouldn’t have let them live if they were mine,” Hiei replied firmly. “Unless he didn’t know who the father was either,” Yusuke pointed out. When Hiei didn’t reply Yusuke sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Why don’t you just pretend they are yours no matter if they are or aren’t. It would mean a lot to Kurama, you know…” Hiei growled some. “I know perfectly well what Kurama would want, detective.” Yusuke threw up his hands in defense. “Yeah but knowing and doing are two different things, right? And with Kurama not able to talk some sense into you someone has to try.” Hiei leveled another glare at the younger demon. “Don’t you have your own mate to attend to?” he asked, clearly annoyed. “Keiko is helping Yukina with dinner,” he answered. Before Hiei could say anything Kurama shifted some and gave a whimper. Instantly, Hiei used his jagan to guide Kurama’s thoughts away from what had been causing his distress. Hiei caught a glimpse of a sharp straight edge shaving razor before it faded into the back of Kurama’s mind again. Yusuke stared at the redhead for a moment before looking at Hiei again, clearly worried. “Has that happened a lot?” he asked quietly. Hiei shrugged. “A few times. He shouldn’t have to worry about nightmares right now,” he answered. Truthfully it had happened more than a few times. At least once an hour he’d had to direct Kurama’s thoughts away from his torture so that he could continue to rest peacefully. He knew eventually the fox would either have to deal with the memories or have Hiei block them but he couldn’t do that until he recovered physically. The door opened and Keiko and Yukina came in carrying two trays of food. “Alright boys, time to eat. And there’s another protein shake here for Kurama too,” Keiko said putting one of the trays next to her husband while Yukina put the other down next to the futon so that Hiei wouldn’t have to move. After dinner, Hiei refused Yusuke’s attempts to draw him back into a conversation and eventually the toushin left, shaking his head some at his friend’s stubbornness. Hiei’s arms tightened slightly around Kurama as he continued to slowly feed him ice chips and protein shakes. They wanted to give him as much chance to rebuild his strength as possible so letting him sleep as much as they could while still giving him what he had clearly been denied during his imprisonment was highest priority. Once Hiei had fed Kurama the last of the ice chips he had beside him he sat the cup to the side and wrapped his arm around Kurama’s expanded waist. He closed his eyes but he was still very much awake and monitoring things. It had been a full day and all Kurama had said was Hiei’s name before passing out and staying that way. That worried Hiei to no end. He hoped that it didn’t turn out to be the last thing his fox said. Yukina was pleased with how much progress Kurama’d made in recovering but was careful to warn them he was still far too weak and thin for them to be celebrating just yet. Suddenly, Hiei’s eyes snapped open when he felt a gentle push against his hand. He looked down at Kurama’s stomach with wide eyes, not at all sure what to do or how to react. It was much easier to forget his mate was pregnant when he didn’t feel the babies move. For some reason his heart was thundering loudly in his own ears and he had to make a conscious effort to slow it down. He felt that gentle push against his hand again and before he knew what he was doing channeled a bit of energy directly to the kits who seemed to settle down instantly. He stared at Kurama’s stomach for several moments before leaning back again. His own reaction confused him quite a bit. He had no idea why it felt like his heart would escape from his chest when he felt that tiny push. Yukina came in with a new cup of ice and saw Hiei’s expression. “Hiei? What’s the matter?” she asked softly. She’d never seen the fire demon look so shocked and bewildered. Hiei looked over at his sister and had to blink to bring himself to the present. “I felt them move…” he explained. Yukina’s eyes widened and she looked down at Kurama’s stomach. “You felt the babies?” she asked gently putting her hand out to touch the firm roundness of Kurama’s stomach. She focused for a moment before pulling her hand back and smiling. “They seem to be doing a bit better. They’re definitely stronger than they were yesterday. If they keep improving like this they might just make it…” she said with hesitant optimism. Hiei looked down at his mate again but couldn’t help but think it was too early to be saying things like that. The main reason they had improved so much was that Kurama was slowing his own recovery down to push theirs along. And if Kurama didn’t make it neither would the kits. Yukina must have somehow read the worry on Hiei’s face though how she managed it was beyond him. She put a hand on his shoulder and gave him a smile when he looked over. “We’ll do our best to keep them all alive, Hiei. You deserve a family more than any of us…” she said and Hiei felt a familiar pang of guilt. But after all this time of lying to her he couldn’t tell her the truth either so he just nodded a bit in reply so that he couldn’t make a slip up with his words. Yukina offered him another smile before getting up and leaving the room. Hiei automatically reached out for the ice chips and started slowly feeding them to his love again. He truly, desperately, wished that Kurama would wake up. Not only would it ease his nerves but Kurama always seemed to know exactly what to say to calm Hiei down. Or get under his skin and annoy him to no end but that wasn’t the point at the moment. Hiei’d been going crazy for months not able to find his mate and even now that he’d found Kurama he was having a hard time not snapping at every little thing. Luckily just having Kurama in his arms helped him keep some of his temper in check and focusing all of his energy on the fox kept him from accidentally setting the temple on fire. It was his mind that needed the most calming right now. Hiei sighed and closed his eyes to rest somewhat though he didn’t dare go to sleep. He couldn’t risk something happening to his fox. Before he knew it, it was morning and the annoying birds were making a racket. He’d returned to carefully feeding Kurama ice chips and used his jagan to see who else was awake. Yukina was just starting breakfast and Kuwabara was still asleep. Yusuke was outside training and Keiko was asleep in the guest room. Hiei had an itch to go out and train with Yusuke to make himself feel better but refrained. Kurama still hadn’t woken up and Hiei couldn’t bring himself to leave. There was another push against Hiei’s hand and without hesitation Hiei channeled some more of his energy to the kits. Only after they’d settled did he realize what he’d done. It disturbed him slightly how easy it was for him to give his energy to another demon’s children. It shouldn’t be. He didn’t want it to be. But he pushed the thought to the side for now. For now, he’d just think of them purely as Kurama’s. That settled much better on his mind anyway. Yukina came in a little bit later with a tray of breakfast and instantly went to check on Kurama and the twins’ progress. “Have you slept at all, Hiei?” she asked, slightly worried. “Hn,” was all Hiei gave for a reply and picked up Kurama’s breakfast of liquid food. He immediately started dripping a little in Kurama’s mouth, having become fairly adept at it already. Only after Kurama had been fed the whole glass did Hiei bother eating his own breakfast, now gone cold from waiting. Yukina took her time in healing even more of Kurama’s worst injuries and Hiei had to admit the fox was looking almost normal save for how thin he still was. He was still somewhat dirty as well, especially that mane of hair of his. But health had been more important than a thorough wash. Hiei could predict the first thing Kurama will want when he woke up though. A very long shower. Probably rather hot and with lots of that shampoo he made from his special plants. Hiei almost smiled at the thought. He wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t see the fox for a full day he would be so busy washing. The vain thing that he was… he wouldn’t be able to stop himself. Kurama suddenly winced and Hiei’s eyes snapped over to Yukina. The ice maiden giggled a bit. “Don’t worry, Hiei, I think one of the babies managed to kick something sensitive is all,” she assured her twin. “It’s got to be rather cramped in there despite how small they are.” Hiei relaxed a bit at that and fed the twins a little bit more energy so they’d hopefully calm down. Yukina smiled some. “They seem to like your energy,” she said as they settled. “How’d you find out they liked that?” Hiei shrugged, somewhat embarrassed. “Accident.” “Well, that’s a very lucky accident then,” Yukina said with a gentle smile. Hiei found himself blushing and looked off to the side, causing his sister to giggle a bit. “Don’t worry Hiei, I think you’ll be a wonderful father,” she said before getting up and leaving the room. She didn’t notice the way Hiei’s eyes widened in shock at the statement or that he stared after her. Hiei wasn’t at all sure if he liked how that word settled on his mind. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
