Kuwabara had no trouble whatsoever finding employment, but it was difficult to find any job that fit hours he wanted. He needed to be home through most of afternoons to watch after Yumi, and Botan saved him with offering Kuwabara a few freelance exorcism jobs every month. Talking ghosts from haunting parts of the city, and coaxing youkai that were little more than feral animals from abandoned buildings.
It was enough he could pay rent, spend time with Yumi and make sure Yuusuke ate more than one meal a day. Five months had passed this way and Kuwabara was glad to see Yuusuke putting on a few more pounds.
"How old is Yumi-chan? Seven months?" Kuwabara asked one afternoon as he sat on the living room floor and played with Yumi, letting her grasp a hold of his fingers so she could take very wobbly steps towards him.
"She'll be a year old next Monday. Oh, fuck--" Kuwabara heard Yuusuke from behind him, and the slap of a hand over a mouth. "Sorry, Yumi, daddy's got a foul mouth. I nearly forgot her birthday! I'm th' worst dad ever..."
"A year, already? I thought she was younger." Kuwabara grinned at that apology and continued to help Yumi balance. She could stand on her own now, and walk a few steps if she wanted. "Someone needs a birthday party! Don't you, Yumi-chan?"
Kuwabara heard Yuusuke mutter something under his breath, and leave the room. The scent of incense prickled the air and the redhead felt horrid. Kuwabara had forgotten. He had totally and utterly forgotten. Yumi giggled and Kuwabara lifted her to sit in his lap as she grabbed at his beard. "Your daddy's just sad, sweetie."
"How about we go up to the temple, if you need to throw her a birthday party?" Yuusuke asked from the doorway a few minutes later, and Kuwabara was already on his feet. Pacing the room with Yumi in his arms.
"That sounds like it could work. How about it sweetie, you wanna go see some bi~ig trees?"
Yumi looked at Kuwabara and reached up to grab at his beard again. "Mama?" she said, uncertainly.
Kuwabara still had no idea why she called him that. "I'm fine, sweetie!" Kuwabara smiled at Yumi and kissed her chubby cheek before he turned to Yuusuke. "I thought she would have outgrown that by now." Kuwabara lifted Yumi, handing her to Yuusuke once the other man sat on the couch, and crouched in front of both Urameshis. "What do you think she would like? Yumi-chan, what gift would you like~? Oh! Maybe a kitten!"
Yuusuke laughed. "You just want a cat,"
"Kitty!" Yumi agreed.
Yuusuke smirked down at her. "You want a cat, huh?" He grinned at Kuwabara. "A cat it is, then! I'll even let you visit when you finally move out."
Kuwabara's smile wilted slightly, at those words, but he forced a grin a moment later. His main reason for staying had been to make sure Yuusuke got better and Yuusuke was steadily improving. "Yumi-chan is growing so fast. She'll probably want me out soon, herself!"
"I doubt it," said Yuusuke. "I mean, she'd be devastated. She'd miss the heck out of you."
Yumi reached out and Kuwabara let her wrap a tiny hand around his finger, smiling at the toddler. "I'd miss her, too..." Kuwabara muttered, kissing the back of her tiny fingers. He didn't care when she called him 'mama', or when she spit up on him. He didn't really even care about the late night crying and feedings. Kuwabara loved that little girl like she was his own.
Kuwabara cleared his throat. "I don't dislike livin' here."
"Good, because I don't think she'll let you move out." Yuusuke bounced Yumi on his knee. "Isn't that right sweetie? You don't want mama to move out. You need him here, right?"
Yumi giggled and Kuwabara grinned as she said, "Mama~!" Again.
"Whole reason I left in the first place was to make sure I never had to leave, again." Kuwabara had never been asked about why he had done this. At least, not by Yuusuke. He wished Yuusuke would ask him. Then, Kuwabara would have no reason not to tell him at least part of Kuwabara's reasons.
Yuusuke grinned. "See, I told ya!" He tickled Yumi's tummy. "Tell him you love him, Yumi-chan. Repeat after me: 'I love you, Kuwabara'."
Even if Yuusuke was speaking for his daughter, hearing those words in that voice made Kuwabara grin like a fool. "I love you too." Directed at Yumi, who just laughed again and leaned towards him until Kuwabara had to hold her again.
"Anyway, I thought you left so you could get stronger and be around forever. Don't get any stupid ideas about leaving again. I'll do things to you that make your training with Hiei look like pleasure cruise."
"You'd have to kick my ass to get me outta here. Sorry, Yumi-chan," At least he only slipped a curse once in a great while, unlike her father.
"Hey, Kuwabara? I wanted to ask this your first day back but I kind of forgot with all the craziness. You've got a really ugly scar." Yuusuke traced an invisible scar on his own shirt right over his heart. "Right there. Was that part of the whole demon training thing?"
"Uh..." Kuwabara's mind was blank for a moment. "Yumi-chan, let's go get you a snack!" Kuwabara deliberately avoided a proper reply, hefting Yumi into his arms and got to his feet, "I'll peel an apple and share it with ya'!"
Yuusuke leaped up and grabbed the front of Kuwabara's shirt. He held tight for a minute before laying his hand flat over Kuwabara's chest; Kuwabara realized the other man was testing his heartbeat. That wasn't there. "Now I have to know." That 'don't-give-me-any-crap' look made Kuwabara nearly swallow his tongue.
Kuwabara knew he was sweating, nervous. Yumi patted Yuusuke's hand and Kuwabara swallowed hard, hoping Yuusuke didn't try to punch him."There were a couple of terms I had to fill. The first was a lot of training, until I emptied out all my reiki. Second was, uh..." He paused and tried to say it like a joke. "Stabbin' myself through the heart so my human body started to die. Well, now ya' know!"
Yuusuke stood there, staring wide-eyed at Kuwabara for a moment, and then his eyes narrowed. Kuwabara was genuinely frightened by the look Yuusuke had on his face."I'm going to put Yumi down for a nap." Yuusuke reached to take Yumi from Kuwabara. "When I come back, we're going to talk."
Yumi protested, "Apples!" In regards to the word 'nap' but Kuwabara handed her over and sat on the couch without a word. Yuusuke had never looked at him like that before, and it was enough to stifle even his fight-or-flight that might have kicked in by now
Kuwabara didn't even look at Yuusuke when the other man entered the room again. "First of all," Yuusuke started, "Doing stupid, dangerous, stupid shit like that is what I do. Not you. Second, what the hell were you thinking?"
Kuwabara licked his lips and nervously scratched his neck. "What else was I supposed to do? It was the only option I had!"
"No other option, huh?" Yuusuke let out a dry laugh and Kuwabara finally looked up at him. "How about the option of waiting to find a better one? How about thinking for a damned minute about what it would do to me if...Hiei came back without you..." Yuusuke clenched his fists and turned away, "Do you think I'd recover from that? Having my wife die and then my best friend?"
"Of course I thought about it." Kuwabara frowned at the accusation. "You really think I wouldn't have thought about it? Weighed my options? Unlike you, I actually think things over!" Kuwabara huffed, crossing his arms. "No, it wasn't the smartest thing I could'a done but it was all I could, so I didn't put you through that, too."
"I cried for eleven days straight after the funeral." Yuusuke said, voice strained. "I forgot how to take care of myself. I didn't bathe or eat or sleep or do any of that stuff. I almost died. Only thing that kept me going was Yumi. If you died too... I dunno if she would have been enough. I wish you would've told me or something so I wouldn't've had to worry for so long." Kuwabara watched his best friend's shoulders tremble. "I can't live without you, Kuwabara."
"Of course you can. You're Urameshi Yuusuke, you're...You." Kuwabara was uncomfortable. Yuusuke wasn't supposed to cry. He wasn't supposed to admit he had ever been weak. Kuwabara couldn't even say he had been sure he wouldn't die. "I should've been here, I know that but I'm here now. I'm never gonna ever leave."
"No, I can't! I'm glad you're a youkai because your death would have really killed me. In a few decades, our friends would've had to bury both of us. So stop being so stupid and acting like your life doesn't matter to me just as much as Keiko's did."
That made Kuwabara angry. "Don't say that, because it's not true. You'd still have Yumi, you couldn't just leave her alone." He realized why it angered him; Yuusuke sounded so prematurely fatalistic. He had his reasons, he really did, but after all the years Kuwabara had known Yuusuke, it was strange to hear. "I never said that, either. Why else-- Goddamn, Urameshi, why do you think I did this all for YOU?!"
"Yumi-chan would've been a grown woman. And your life... means the same to me as Keiko's did." He looked away, nibbling on his lip. "Keiko just... got there first."
"She would still be your daughter..." Kuwabara was still, very dense. Not nearly as badly as when he was a teen, but there was still a long moment that those words sank into his brain. The tan he had managed over that time in the Makai was totally gone, leaving the flush that crawled across his face a stark difference to his pale complexion. "She made you happy."
Yuusuke nodded. "Hey, listen. Why don't we just... eat or something." It was obvious that Yuusuke was still pretty terrible at conversational diversions.
Kuwabara said nothing for a long few moments. "I'm here now, Urameshi. I'm not going anywhere."
Yuusuke managed a half grin. "Yeah."
Kuwabara got to his feet and clapped his hands together. "I'll fix lunch. Work up a plan fer Monday."
"I guess we should start thinking about cake and presents. Kurama's gonna want to help too."
"I'll call him after we eat. After you eat."
"I don't think I really want to eat..." Yuusuke was doing that thing, that I'll-smile-and-act-nonchalant thing he had done many times when Kuwabara suggested a meal, over the past months.
"You might not want eat, but you're going to." Kuwabara stepped to Yuusuke, and laid a hand on Yuusuke's shoulder. "Yumi-chan weighs more than you do, Urameshi."
Yuusuke looked up and Kuwabara could hardly read his expression."I don't feel good right now, okay?" he said. "I just..."
Kuwabara couldn't understand the feeling coming off of Yuusuke. It was confusing; prickly sort of like anger or fear, but it also made Kuwabara's body feel warm. Like happiness."What's wrong? I said I wasn't leaving." Maybe it was a kind of sadness Kuwabara had never felt before. He squeezed Yuusuke's shoulder, trying to reassure the other man.
"Ah forget it," Yuusuke jerked away and stomped into the kitchen, "You're too stupid, you wouldn't even understand if I screamed it in your face."
"I'm not stupid!" Kuwabara protested, on the edge of telling Yuusuke all the various and valid reasons he as not stupid! All the various and valid reasons why he was, in fact, very smart! "I know I make ya' happy, too."
"Yep,"
Kuwabara wished Yuusuke would straight out answer him, but the redhead just gave him a dubious smile that turned into a smirk. "Well...I know you're not trying to hit on me, so that isn't it."
Yuusuke suddenly turned to look at Kuwabara, and spluttered, "Wh-what? No, I ain't! I'm not gay!"
Kuwabara took a good step away from Yuusuke. "Whoa, what's with that reaction!" Kuwabara was a little scared now. Scared that Yuusuke was about to kick his balls up into his body and scared that Yuusuke wasn't actually angry.
"Hey! Just 'cause you're a guy, doesn't change the fact that Keiko was a girl. I loved a girl. Loving you doesn't make me gay."
Kuwabara bumped against the far wall, back flat against it as he came to a stop. "Wha...? I know you love me, idiot!" Like a friend.
Yuusuke made a move like he was thinking of strangling Kuwabara, and suddenly grabbed Kuwabara's shirt. Both hands balled into fists and "I don't have to deal with fuckin' words--" Yuusuke pressed his lips against Kuwabara's, clipping lip with teeth. Kuwabara had his hands raised, not knowing where to put them and eyes wide.
Yuusuke broke the kiss rather quickly. "Was that clear enough or do I have to get you naked for you to understand?"
Kuwabara had been kissed, before. He had been kissed poorly and very, very well but that was nothing compared to being kissed by Urameshi Yuusuke. "I...Think I got it." He bit his tongue to stop himself from saying something more. His entire body was suddenly slumped, back against the wall and head tipped to the side as he let out a strangely breathy laugh.
"Are you sure?" Yuusuke asked. He crossed his arms and added, "Because I wasn't bluffing about the naked thing."
Kuwabara was almost twenty-two and he was turning almost comically red beneath his beard. He was trying very hard to keep his voice from wavering. "T-that's...Nothing I haven't seen before."
Yuusuke laughed, sounding much more like himself. "I don't know if you ever got a real good look."
Kuwabara swallowed hard, hands still hovering in the air. "I..." Best he could manage, and Kuwabara was a little ashamed to admit that he had looked. He had looked more than once. Snuck a shameful peek when Yuusuke was changing during the Dark Tournament, caught glimpses out the corner of his eye after gym class. "I have."
"Oh." Yuusuke backed up a step and he cracked one of those smirks that made Kuwabara feel like a tiny worm being dangled in front of a very large, unfairly sexy fish.
Just a few inches of room between them let Kuwabara's brain crawl out of his stomach and back into his skull. Kuwabara stepped away from the wall and gave Yuusuke a very ugly, very sappy look. "Er. What's this mean?"
"Fuck if I know. I know what I'd like it to mean. Y'know, I just noticed something. I am really hungry."
"Lunch. Forgot I was supposed to cook--" Kuwabara hurried past Yuusuke without another word, happy to have some time to think. Whatever Yuusuke meant by 'what he would like' would wait, and give Kuwabara time to settle his stomach and nerves.

The dishes needed cleaned twice. They did. Kuwabara was almost ready to start them in a third cycle, but forced himself into the living room. Fingers wrinkled and pruned, he sat on the couch, a cushion away from Yuusuke and Yumi. "Hey, Yumi-chan," Yumi wasn't having that space between them, stretching out her hands at the redhead until he scooted closer and took the toddler into his arms. She giggled and laid her head against his shoulder. "Mama," Yumi muttered happily.
"She didn't sleep long."
"I was about to send for help," said Yuusuke. "I thought you drowned in the sink. Why are you sitting all the way over there?" Yuusuke raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing at one corner of his mouth. "I'm not going to suddenly kiss you again, okay?"
"Hey, I didn't dislike that!" Kuwabara had no idea why he protested that loudly, and went deathly silent. Yumi had his hand in hers and the redhead let her nibble his fingertips. "I'm sitting over here because I don't know how to handle all this."
"Handle what? Damn, you're weird." Yuusuke shook his head. "Wanna feel me up?" Yuusuke laughed and Kuwabara blushed when Yuusuke gave him a cheesy wink. "I'll let you get to second base, Kuwabara."
"Handle US!" He gestured between them, startling Yumi and the redhead slouched his shoulders, "Us. Whatever it would be you want outta me. Like, what-- roommates? Best friends? Lovers?" That word sounded a little delicate to be associated with Yuusuke, but it was all that came to mind.
"How about all of it?" Yuusuke hummed, smiling. Not his cocky smirk or taunting one but a real genuine and fond smile. "You know, I'm kind of a selfish guy, after all."
Kuwabara just stared at Yuusuke until his eyes burned and he had to blink. That was it? That easy? That simple? No punches, no curses? Just an awkward conversation and then...Kuwabara slowly grinned, a lopsided look on his face as he sat upright, shoulders squared. Kuwabara let out a 'hmph' and had a smug look on his face.
"Okay, what'd I do? What's with that face?" Yuusuke asked, lifting a thick brow.
"Nothing." Kuwabara sounded as smug as he looked, not paying attention to Yumi chewing his fingertips like they were a teething ring. "Just that for once, I could do something better than you." Kuwabara's discussion on feelings hadn't been so complicated and hard to understand, unlike Yuusuke's.
"I doubt that," said Yuusuke. "What exactly do you think you just beat me at?"
"I never said I beat you yet." Kuwabara scoffed, and suddenly winced. "Ow, Yumi-chan-" He pulled his hand from hers, even if Yumi looked upset at her sudden loss of a 'toy'. His fingertip was bleeding, a slow well of blood from a set of tiny pricks all around his finger. Kuwabara raised a brow and carefully prodded Yumi's mouth, although drew his hand away when she protested, "No, mama!"
"She's got teeth coming in, already!" To Kuwabara, that was amazing.
Yuusuke hefted Yumi up and held her so he could look at her face. "Is it that weird?" he asked.
"I...I dunno, but pretty sure there shouldn't be that many all at once." Kuwabara pointed out, and licked the blood from his finger, "Or that sharp. Not like my fingertips're paper thin or anything." Kuwabara's fingertips were still pretty rough from his time in the Makai, baby teeth shouldn't have poked through at all.
Yuusuke laughed. "Maybe it's a youkai thing. My teeth are pretty sharp." Kuwabara watched Yuusuke try to lift Yumi's upper lip to see her teeth, and Yumi actually bit her father's finger. "Hey! Yumi, biting is bad!"
Kuwabara and Yumi both laughed at Yuusuke's reaction. "Well, you weren't always a youkai. Maybe it's because she was born half? I could ask Kurama. He's got to know something about babies!"
Yuusuke shrugged. "Probably not a bad idea anyway, but I'm kind of a freak so... that kind of freaks me out. Like... You know that the type of youkai I am eats people right?"
"What?" Kuwabara gave Yuusuke a puzzled look as he gave his own fingertip another lick "No you're not. You've never eaten anyone!"
"No c-r-a-p," Curse word spelled out for Yumi's sake. "In case you forgot, I wasn't always a youkai." He gave Yumi a serious look. "I know he smells a little like a human but I don't think he'd taste very good. Maybe you shouldn't sleep in the nursery tonight. You can sleep in my bed." Yuusuke's solemn expression cracked as soon as he looked at Kuwabara. "You know, so I can protect you in case she gets hungry in the middle of the night."
Yumi batted at Yuusuke's shoulder, almost as if she were chastising him. "Dada!"
"I'm not a human!" Kuwabara protested, caught sight of the smirk on Yuusuke's face and his face went brick red. His hands clapped over Yumi's ears carefully, and he scowled at the other man. "You asshole." Yumi grabbed at Kuwabara's hands, trying to move them, "S-stop smelling me, too! That's really rude."
"Shut up, she won't eat you," said Yuusuke. "I'm just giving you a hard time!"
"I know that, you moron!" Yuusuke gave Yumi a kiss on top of her head and smiled at Kuwabara again, although the redhead was having none of it. "Are you going to sit on the other side of the living room all night? I might get the wrong idea."
"I need a shower." Kuwabara pursed his lips indignantly, and got to his feet. "Yumi-chan, tell your daddy to stop being such a p-r-i-c-k." Kuwabara turned on his heel and stomped to the nursery to get a pair of sweatpants to wear and was trying very hard not to let his mind get carried away, but it went in two directions at once.
Yuusuke had kissed him.
Yuusuke had said he wanted to be his lover.
Holy crap.
