Scene 37
Scene 37 -------------- The Village
* When Hiei approaches the trio of huts he finds the three brothers, Habataro’s mates, and a couple others gathered around a wrapped body preparing to burn it. The Koorime stops and Habataro looks toward him.
Habataro- She was gone this morning.
Kumataro- They must’ve.. gave her some kind of.. poison..
* Kumataro drops his head and sobs. His two sons scoot closer to embrace him. Habataro and Coutaro go over closer to Hiei.
Habataro- Actually, I think it was the toxins in their bites that was too much for her in such a weakened condition.
Coutaro- Our healer did all he could..
Hiei- Why wasn’t I sent for? I could’ve brought my two..
* Kumataro shakes his head as he looks toward Hiei.
Kumataro- She’d suffered enough.. She’d never be.. right again.. I couldn’t bare to have her live like.. that.
* Hiei silently watches Kumataro grasp one of the torches from Roqueyo and toss it onto the body and gathered wood.
Kumataro- My only consolation is that you allowed me to destroy those b------s.. But the blame wasn’t solely on them.. My daughter left our protection against your orders.. and mine..
Hiei- She was deceived, Kuma.
* Kumataro turns to look at him as the others toss their own torches on the growing pyre.
Kumataro- Please, sir. Allow me to finish.. while I can.
* Hiei meets Kumataro’s anguished eyes and nods.
Hiei- Speak.
* Kumataro swallows.
Kumataro- Our Father always taught us.. that revenge is a dangerous road.. It can bring either closure.. or only death.. He also taught us that we choose our own destinies sometimes when we make foolish decisions.. Darieth, though I loved her, made a foolish decision.. You saved her once, but she still hadn’t learned her lesson.. I’ll miss her, but I’m not so stricken in my grief to blame you.. or anyone else.
* Kumataro turns to face the pyre once more.
Kumataro- The blame lays only there.. The whole thing is finished.. I want no further violence.
* Hiei glances around at the gathered family then nods.
Hiei- Hn.
Habataro- Being a Father and a Leader are both positions that bring tough decisions.
* Hiei is silent a moment as he considers Habataro’s words.
Hiei- Your Father’s words about vengeance were correct. I’ve learned the same on my own.. But I also learned that you can’t trust a person who’s driven by revenge.. It puts me at ease to know that none of you are like this.
Coutaro- Then you knew that Asmaru was lying about that being the whole pack?
Hiei- Hn.. If what’s left of those Rats cause any further trouble, though.. I will deal with them.
* With that Hiei turns and walks away leaving the Lynx family to return to their vigil.
