AN: I have added a lot to this chapter! Over 1,800 new words! I feel very pleased with this! When I first started posting this story on 1/28/05 I had only seen the anime, only the episodes that aired on Cartoon Network’s Toonami and Adult Swim. I never read the manga until much, much later. Kurama/Hiei was my first Yaoi ship and is still my OTP. Now when I first wrote this I just went with what I knew from the anime episodes I had watched so my original story had a lot of continuity errors that did not match up to the later episodes of the show that I am now striving to fix. Such as Shura, Yomi’s clone/son. Originally he wasn’t even mentioned in this chapter, now he is so this story is a bit more inline with the Yu Yu Hakusho story line. I also completely made up the results of the second Demon World Tournament from scene 8 of Eizou Hakusho, the little clip only showed the beginning with our four favorite boys together once more. Also this chapter is very, very wordy, a lot of speaking to each other. My sister is calling it an information dump, but all this information was needed for the plot of this story and some of the stories that follow this one that are all connected to my Love’s Destiny story arc. Anyway, I hope you like it and thank you again for reading.

Chapter 4 of 18
A Serious Talk And A Ningen Store
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Kurama sat down heavily on the couch, his head landing against the cushioned back as he stared at the ceiling. Several things were running through his mind. Most important was what he was just told by his friend and how he would deal with it. The other thought was over what could possibly be happening if that damn phone hadn't rung.
There was several minutes of uncomfortable silence before Kurama finally spoke. "That was Yusuke."
"Hn." Came the grunt from the other end of the couch, acknowledging that Hiei was listening.
"He wanted to let me know that Koenma found out that the demon we recently killed worked for Yomi."
"What? Why?" Hiei asked as he sat up, giving the fox his full attention. He absolutely hated that damn blind demon for using blackmail to coerce the redhead into an alliance and for using him like a slave, forcing him to fight in the first Demon World Tournament. The one bright spot in the whole ordeal was Kurama betraying Yomi in the end and forcing him to dissolve his section of the Makai to join the Tournament too. Hiei also knew, from Mukuro, that at some point in the very distant past Kurama and Yomi had been lovers. From all the Youko stories he had heard himself, Hiei had deduced that Kurama had most likely slept with all of his previous partners in crime, all except him. That of course just made Hiei feel very unwanted, left out, and extremely jealous.
"Koenma doesn't know, but he is looking into it." Kurama replied with a shrug of his shoulders, sinking into the couch even more. "Yomi and I may have parted as friends after the first Demon World Tournament, but he is still not to be trusted. Yomi always has some kind of plan in the works. Damn, I don't want to be forced to work for him again. Though like before, I'm sure he will find something to hold over my head."
"Fox." Hiei’s voice was stern, and he waited until the redhead looked at him. "If I can break away from Mukuro even with the powerful position she offered me and you know how much I crave power, then you can break away from Yomi. You are nobody's slave, just as I am nobody’s slave."
"I don't know about that. I’m positive Yomi will find something, he is very persistent." Kurama shook his head, his green eyes revealed how unsure he felt about the situation.
"Do you have any idea what he might want?"
Hiei was determined to figure out how to finally stop this demon. He was stronger now and so was the redhead then when they fought in second Demon World Tournament. They were both very close to being labeled upper S class demons. When Kurama didn’t answer him right away, Hiei let his mind briefly remember back to that second Demon World Tournament. Due to the random drawing of lots, Yomi and Mukuro had been matched up in the very first round, they nearly killed each other in that battle. Mukuro had won, but she was defeated in the second round, due to her many injuries, by a powerful Shura. In the third round of fights, Kurama had no problem defeating Shura, once again proving just how cutthroat and cunning he could be even to a child. Kurama was nice enough to let the boy live, but not with out very serious injuries. Kuwabara managed to stay alive, but didn’t make it past the third round, which was an excellent showing of power and fighting ability for a human in a tournament full of demons.
In the fourth round, Kurama and Hiei were matched up for battle. In a surprising turn of events, Hiei withdrew from the match and ultimately the tournament, because once again he would never dare fight Kurama in a real battle, one of them wouldn’t make it out alive. In the fifth round Kurama unexpectedly withdrew, due to being paired up against Yusuke. He never wants to fight the demon, his friend, that helped save his human mother. After that Yusuke continued through the rounds of battle and nearly won that second tournament. He had made it to the final round and was paired against Enki, but due to Yusuke’s numerous injuries and energy depletion from the previous rounds Enki once again was victorious. All the serious fighters were currently preparing for the third Demon World Tournament, but there was rumors circulating that Yomi and Mukuro wanted to dissolve the Tournament, that they wanted to go back to splitting the Makai three ways, with Yusuke reining over Raizen’s third, now that he was strong enough. It remained to be seen if that would happen though.
Kurama finally sighed, which drew the fire demon from his thoughts. He had decided to tell Hiei everything. He turned to face his friend, his green eyes filled with worry. "When I was there one of Yomi’s many plans was he wanted an heir."
“Yomi has an heir already. Shura, that clone brat of his that has fought in both Demon World Tournaments. You easily beat him in the second tournament.” Hiei responded with what information he knew.
“Well, yes, he does have Shura and he does treat him like a son. That kid is already S class and as far as I know is his heir, but he was basically just Yomi’s back up for a better chance at winning the first tournament. The boy was given a potion that expedited his growth rate, Shura was only about a hundred and fifty days old when he first fought Yusuke. The growth potion was stopped at the beginning of the first tournament so Shura could age naturally. What Yomi wants now is a backup and a rival for Shura. He wants an additional heir.”
“So Yomi wants you as his heir? Mukuro wanted me as her successor too, but I didn’t want to fulfill her outrageous prerequisites for the position. Why doesn’t he just make another clone?" Hiei had crossed his legs on the couch, gathering all the information that he could. Maybe one day he would tell the redhead exactly what Mukuro wanted from him to be her heir, but that was not today.
“He doesn’t want another clone of himself.” Kurama answered simply. “He wants me.”
“HA! It’s very obvious he wants you.” Hiei’s laugh was short and without humor.
Kurama’s eyes momentarily flashed gold, his voice deep. “Yes, it’s true, Yomi does still desire me for his lover, but he knows that will never happen again. He wants me for something else entirely.”
“If Yomi wants you as an heir why send a demon to try and kill you?”
"I imagine Yomi’s orders wasn't to kill me. The demon’s orders were probably to try to wear me down in a solo fight and then capture me. Yomi knows I want to try to live this life for my human mother and he knows that I will not knowingly put humans in danger so the result is I won’t change to Youko while in a battle in this world. I can only guess that the demon forgot his orders when he got here. The humans were to tempting. After the mercenary demon killed a few humans, he caught Koenma's attention and you know the rest."
"Again why send a demon instead of just summoning you?" Hiei asked, while glaring at the redhead, he felt there was more to this problem.
"Because Yomi knows I would not go to him willingly." Kurama replied as he looked away from those intense red eyes.
"Fox!! What aren't you telling me?!" Hiei’s growl was a warning.
Kurama let out the breath he hadn't realized he was holding and turned his eyes back to the fire demon. "He wants another heir."
"You've already said that!"
"This was one of Yomi’s plans, he discussed it with me while he was blackmailing me to work for him. I absolutely refused and he wasn’t happy about that and it appears he did not give up on his plan. He doesn't want me as an heir. He wants me to produce an heir for him." Kurama answered with a sigh of relief, it felt like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders to finally share this with someone. "As I said he wants a backup and a rival/friend/maybe lover for Shura. He doesn’t want a clone of me either, he actually wants me to bed an in heat female of his choosing and produce a child with her. Yomi would then take the child and raise it as his own, his reasoning is that he is stronger then me so he will be the better father figure and the child deserves to be raised in the Makai. In his little fantasy, he thinks it will be ‘cute’ that our two children will be friends and fighting partners maybe more like we were friends/partners/lovers in the past. Yomi has even promised me he will teach the child everything he knows, which is everything I now detest, including consuming humans. I can not….…..I will not have that!!"
"No one can make you do that, Kurama!" Hiei replied, hate filtering into his voice as it was similar to what Mukuro wanted from him. In fact he was barely holding in his anger at Yomi’s outrageous demand.
"I hope you're right." Kurama replied quietly. He wished with everything he has that he had a way to get out of this problem.
"I am right, Fox!" Hiei’s voice held so much assurance. There was no way he would let Yomi anywhere near the redhead after everything that was just revealed to him.
"You want to hear something that may seem funny, but it actually isn’t?" Kurama asked, sitting up a little straighter and now staring out the glass sliding doors. "Something I have never told anyone."
"Sure."
"In my past demon life, I never wanted any offspring. The idea didn't sit well with me. I took precautions every single time when I slept with females, in the form of a plant potion that I forced them to drink even when they weren’t in heat so no baby would be conceived. I was very arrogant and selfish, I didn't think I should have to share my abilities even with my own kid. I also didn't want a miniature version of myself running around the Makai, ruining my reputation that I had carefully cultivated over the centuries. Now in this existence, in this life, I think often about maybe someday having a child or two, maybe more, maybe a litter of kits."
"The change in your beliefs between your two lives is slightly humorous, but you are right, it’s not really funny." Hiei watched the redhead intently. "But if you do one day have a child, it would still be a demon."
"Yes it would. I would want it to know it's demon heritage and be proud of it. I would want the child to train and tap into the plant manipulating abilities it would inherit from me. I would want the child to be powerful and even one day surpass me." Kurama smiled wistfully.
"That doesn’t sound so bad then. Maybe it would even have your cunning."
"I can only hope." Kurama laughed, feeling slightly better. He again turned to the fire demon. "The most important thing to me though would be for the child to grow up with love from family and friends. I'd raise it very much like I have been raised these past years. I would make sure that it wouldn't have a demon's normal solitary life, like what is prevalent in the Makai. The one where it would struggle to survive from the moment it was born and have to fight to acquire or keep anything including it's own life."
"I obviously can agree with you some on that point, having had known my own existence in the Makai very much like you just described.” Hiei was blunt with the next part of his reply. “The problem I see is what will happen when the ningen woman you bed bears you a kid with quite possibly silver fox ears and a tail. What do you say then? Surprise, I'm a fox demon and so is our child. And also what would your human mother say of such a child? Will she accept it and continue accepting you? I honestly doubt you will ever be able to have a child and be happy too, Kurama, at least not while you reside in the human world."
"Of course you're right, Hiei. I know all of that, but something this human world has taught me is that it’s okay to dream. Isn’t it alright for me to dream?"
"Yes you can, Fox." Hiei nodded with a very small curve to his lips. He stored this knowledge in the back of his mind like he usually does when he receives new information no matter how minor. He considers all information as a type of weapon, something he could possibly use at a later time.
"So….Do you want to reproduce, Hiei?" Kurama asked, turning fully to face the fire demon and crossing his legs on the couch much like his friend.
"WHAT?! ME!?"
"Yes."
"No I don't think so. I will never have a brat." Hiei replied with a quick negative shake of his head.
"Why not?" Kurama asked with pure, honest curiosity evident in his voice.
"Well for several reasons. I have nothing to offer a lover or even a mate; physically or emotionally. No one would want me anyway, I'm labeled the Forbidden One by my own race and shouldn’t even be alive. I guess most of all, I will not make a brat suffer through the same dismal existence that I had to. If I was ever to take a female lover and reproduce, things in my life would have to change significantly."
“Don’t belittle yourself! I know you are a powerful and honorable demon. You may not have a home to offer a lover, but you have so much more. I choose to believe that one day your life will be good, and then you will have a family." Kurama offered, his smile so optimistic that the fire demon had to look away from him.
"I don’t know if I can believe that." Hiei muttered before quickly changing the subject. He didn’t want to discuss the subject of reproducing now that the conversation was turned back on him and the praise the redhead was giving him made something warm swell in his chest. "So, Fox, since you got me to agree to stay, what are we doing today? Train?"
"We could do that later, but I wanted to go out for awhile."
"Out in Ningen Society?" Hiei was a little startled by this, for the most part he tried to avoid a lot of contact with ningens and the fox knew this.
"Yes." Kurama nodded, a smile on his lips.
"I don't think I will like that." Hiei was at least honest.
"At any point you feel too uncomfortable we can come straight back here." Kurama offered while hearing the buzzer on the dryer going off again. The machine was set with a reminder to buzz every twenty minutes until the door was opened. He really wanted to get Hiei out in public, being in that cramped apartment, alone, was too tempting.
"Do you promise, Fox?" Hiei asked apprehensively. He didn't want to go out, he would rather stay in the apartment and keep the fox all to himself.
"Yes I do." Kurama confirmed with a nod of his head.
"Okay, I guess, but I reserve the right to be ill-tempered at anytime."
"Of course." Kurama laughed as he got up from the couch. He walked over to the laundry closet and pulled the black clothes from the dryer. Picking up a small sewing kit he walked back to the couch and sat down. Hiei moved closer so he could watch the fox. He finds it highly amusing to see the infamous Youko performing menial ningen tasks, though he would never admit it to the redhead.
Kurama worked quickly, sewing up all the slits in Hiei's clothes. When He was finished he handed all the clothing to the fire demon flashing a pretty smile. "All done."
"Hn." Hiei only grunted his thanks.
Kurama got up and went into the bedroom to get dressed. The redhead came out ten minutes later dressed in snug black jeans, white t-shirt, white socks, and red button down shirt left open. Hiei was completely dressed standing in front of the sliding glass doors. The clothes he had slept in was scattered on the couch.
"You ready to go?" Kurama asked, stopping in the middle of the room and running a hand through his hair.
Hiei turned around his eyes widening a fraction while taking in the sight of his fox. Kurama was beyond beautiful and despite the redhead’s praise, Hiei knew he had absolutely nothing to entice him to be his lover. Hiei only managed to nod his head when his voice failed him.
"Do we take my car or walk?"
"Let's walk, Fox. I do not like that ningen device." Hiei answered as moved away from the glass doors and towards his friend.
"Alright then, let's go." Kurama walked to the front door and picked up his keys from a table as he slipped on a pair of white sneakers. He suddenly stopped and turned around. "Oh Hiei! You have to leave your katana here."
"My katana goes with me anywhere." Hiei spat while reflexively gripping the sword's handle.
"I know that, but you can get in big trouble if you get caught by ningen authorities with that kind of weapon. It will be safe here and you are still just as deadly without it." Kurama said as he opened the closet door to his right. Hiei growled as he untied the sash and put the weapon inside the closet against the wall. Kurama took a moment to snag his light jacket from the closet and put it on.
They left the apartment and walked up the street nether one talking. They just enjoyed each other's quiet presence. The two demons walked along, glancing into the store windows as they went. Hiei was totally bored, but he was truly doing his best to try to make the fox happy. Kurama knew this and was thankful for it, but he was determined to get the fire demon involved in their day out. He walked closer to his companion so every so often their arms would brush. Kurama happened to glance in one of the stores that lined the sidewalk and saw something he thought his friend would like.
"Come on, Hiei." Kurama put his hand around the fire demon's wrist and pulled him into the store. Hiei had to keep reminding himself not to bite the hand pulling him. He was about to let a few choice words leave his lips when the fox stopped suddenly and dropped his wrist. His eyes widened a fraction taking in the sight, the redhead noticed this, of course. They were standing in the middle of a ningen store that was full of mostly black, mostly shiny clothes. There were a few other colors mixed into the racks, scattered around the store.
"What is this place?" Hiei asked as looked over the many different racks of clothes.
"I thought you may like this place." Kurama turned towards his friend. "It's a leather store."
"Is this type of ningen store common?"
"No, not really. It's more of a specialty type store, the people that like these items are the only ones that come in. This store is usually frequented by motorcycle riders, wanna-be rock stars, delinquent young men such as Yusuke, and some gangsters." Kurama said watching Hiei examine a pair of pants. "Why don't you see if they have them in your size and get them, if you like them."
"No……. I don't have any ningen currency, I only have some gold coins from the Makai." Hiei replied, dropping his hand to his side.
"They might would take some gold. It's very valuable here. Don't worry about it though, this will be my treat." Kurama was smiling as he looked through a rack of leather vests.
"Your treat?" Hiei asked as he walked over to the fox.
"Yes, you pick out something you like and I will buy it for you." Kurama offered while moving on to another rack.
"Why?" Hiei asked suspiciously.
"Just call it an apology for last night and for whatever I did that made you mad at me from before."
"I have already told you I was not mad at you. I was very mad at myself." Hiei replied his eyes quickly narrowing to mere slits when he realized what he had said.
"Why were you mad at yourself?" Kurama asked, stepping closer to the fire demon.
"Let it drop, Kurama!"
"I just want to help." Kurama’s voice was low and soft.
"Hn." Hiei remained quiet.
"Fine, be that way. I was serous about buying you something though, go pick out anything you like. It will be a gift from me to you."
"Hn." Hiei grunted before he started maneuvering around the racks. The fox watched him for a moment before turning back to the rack of pants. His friend was still a little prickly, but at least they were talking more so he would count that as a win.
After about ten minutes, Hiei approached Kurama carrying his choice. "I want this."
"Let me see." Kurama instantly turned towards the smaller demon. Hiei held up a black leather jacket that had a few metallic zippers on it, but not overly done. The main zipper was obviously down the front. There was also two zippers where the pockets for the hands were and a last zipper indicating a small pocket on the chest area. Kurama gave him a nod of approval. "I like that, Hiei."
"I do too." Came the voice of the salesman that had been watching them the whole time they had been in the store. Hiei bundled up the jacket and shoved into the small shelf beside him.
Kurama slightly raised his eyebrow at this. Obviously the fire demon had not liked the ningen's comment. The fox turned and smiled brightly at the young man, speaking quietly. "Will you excuse us for a moment?"
"Of course, Madam-san."
"I am not a woman!" Kurama said through clenched teeth. He was tired of people thinking that. Sure he had long hair, but everything else about himself presented as male. He sent a warning glare at the snickering demon beside him.
"I am so sorry, Sir." The salesman said as he bowed only slightly for the offense. He did wink at the pretty redhead before turning and walking away. This only made Kurama madder. If it wasn't one extreme it was another. He stood quiet for a moment, getting his temper under control. When he felt he was ready he turned to the fire demon who was still snickering beside him.
"How often does that happen, Fox?" Hiei asked, while still trying to control his amused snickers.
"Quite often actually." Kurama replied with a touch of anger still evident in his voice. "Now that he knows I'm a guy he'll come back and get very friendly."
"You mean he'll be forward with you?"
"Yes I do. Here in Ningenkai it is called coming on to or you might know it better as flirting. You didn't see him wink at me did you?"
"No, he winked at you?" Hiei didn’t know how he could have missed that, even when he was amused he was still being observant or at least he thought he was.
"Yes, he did while he was bowing." Kurama replied, reaching for the discarded jacket and picking it up. "Do you still want this?"
"No, that stupid ningen likes it."
"It doesn't matter if he likes it. He gets paid to say that."
"It's dirty now." Hiei eyed the jacket, his loathing clear.
"No, it's not. Just because he said he liked it doesn't mean it's tarnished in anyway." Kurama said, holding up the jacket. There was no way he would tell the fire demon that probably a hundred humans had handled it already. "Come on, I want to get it for you."
"I suppose I'll get it, If you get one too." Hiei replied, crossing his arms over his chest. Kurama examined the jacket, turning it around in his hands. He decided he did like it and he did need a new jacket with it starting to get colder, but the color was all wrong for him.
"Did you make up your mind, Sir?" The salesman asked as he approached them again.
"Yes I did. Do you have this same jacket in red, size large?" Kurama asked politely. He didn’t actually wear a size large, but he liked his jackets to fit loosely on him.
"We may have it in the backroom. I will go check for you. Can I ask you your name?" The salesman smiled at the pretty redhead.
"That's none of your damn business." Hiei spoke up loudly, stepping closer to the redhead in a show of possessiveness. Kurama noticed this, raising an eyebrow slightly. This was new, but he liked it.
"Such a cute kid." The salesman laughed, laying his hand on the fire demon's shoulder.
Kurama was sure the man was about to lose his arm or his life. He grabbed Hiei's twitching dominate hand, the red eyes of his friend held so much anger.
"Um…Sir, could you please see about that jacket for me?" Kurama asked rather forcefully while tightening his hold on the fire demon’s hand that had balled into a fist.
"Oh of course. I will be back in a minute." The sales rep replied before practically running to the back room. Kurama let go of the hand and turned to his angry friend.
"Calm down, Hiei." Kurama whispered, looking around to see if anybody else in the store was paying any attention to them.
"That damn ningen touched me." Hiei’s voice was a low growl. "He needs to die."
"You can't! If you do Koenma will have to put a warrant out for you."
"SO!"
"Hiei, just let it go! Please!" Kurama pleaded quietly.
"Fine! He had not better touch me again or he will lose his head." Hiei hissed, his fists clenching.
"He won't. I will keep him away from you. Can you do something for me though?"
"What is that, Fox?"
"When the guy comes back will you play along?" Kurama asked with mischief sparkling in his leaf green eyes.
"Play along?" Hiei asked, unsure of what the fox may want.
"Yes, just go along with whatever I say or the way I act."
"Okay, Kurama." Hiei smirked, ready to get even with the stupid ningen. He knew whatever the fox had planned would be very entertaining.
