“So let me get this straight. You think I’m a psychic.”
“No mein Liebling, we know you’re a psychic.”
“And you want me to take my father‘s place until you can save him? My real father, not my adoptive one.”
“Yeah, that about sums it up.” The flame haired foreigner was toying with a lock of his hair. That smug, self assured grin never leaving his face. The entire time he spoke to her, no matter how outrageous his words were, he sounded perfectly matter of fact.
He seemed so positive in fact, that Keiko was beginning to believe his words.
The tiny brunette was now comfortably sitting with her back propped against the bedpost at the head of the bed. She was wearing a man’s shirt, and some comfortable, albeit oversized, jeans. Before, while the stranger had been talking she had prowled around ‘her’ bedroom, taking in all the details. The room was done in dark shades- midnight blue and black, with white and silver highlights. Her current companion had explained that her brother had chosen the decorations, hoping she’d enjoy it. Her brother… the thought was too overwhelming for her to consider.
“But on the other hand, you did kidnapped me. And you claim to have kept me in a drugged sleep for the past few weeks. So why should I believe anything you say?” the recently awakened brunette demanded shrewdly. She stared challengingly into the blue eyes of the man sitting across from her.
“I already explained why we had to do that, Reizand. But it’s not like we neglected you during that time. Look at me,” he opened his arms wide in invitation, “and tell me that even though you don’t consciously remember ever seeing me before this night, that you don’t know me? That you don’t trust me?”
She stared at her captor for a second. She took a moment to honestly contemplate his demand, and examine how she felt. To her surprise she realized that she did somehow know this man, and she did… trust him. Her confusion must have shown clearly because he looked at her in amused sympathy.
“That’s why we kept you asleep. Do you remember dreaming about a room that held no place in reality? Where people talked to you, taught you? Guided you to your powers? That was us.”
“Us?” she asked, staring at him intently trying to decide whether or not she believed what she was hearing. Even though she was inclined to trust him, the whole situation felt so unreal.

Kurama was having a bad day.
He had put aside his regular activities so they could solve the cases Koenma had tossed at them. But they hadn’t found any information or accomplished anything in the over a week they had spent on the case. He was feeling rather restless with the lack of results, but his dissatisfaction was nothing compared to that of his companions.
Especially Hiei.
Yusuke was being an ass about getting Keiko’s help, saying he ‘didn’t want her involved in any cases’ and nothing Kurama had said could budge him on the subject. Of course when Hiei had pointed out to the Yusuke that he was only avoiding her because he was a coward the smaller demon had had to avoid a rage driven fist. Kurama had eventually had to summon one of his more exotic hybrid plants to subdue the two before they destroyed the human realm.
He had been saving that plant for a special occasion too!
At that point he could only be grateful that Kuwabara had been at the library trying to look up a list of labs that dealt in genetic research. Otherwise he was quite positive that the other red head would have managed to irritate the fire demon and toushin beyond control.
That had been this morning. This afternoon one of his school friends had called him on his cell phone to inform him that he had missed a major test in his Plant Biotechnology course. Too bad Roshi had waited until after the test contact him.
And then get this… his mother called seconds later to ask him to chaperone his step brother’s school dance for her. She had been as eager as Shuichi had been to attend the dance, but her best friend in Okinawa was having her baby. Of course Shiori, as the god mother of the child, was expected to be there. Yay. Babysitting an ungodly amount of hormonal teenagers. He sometimes wished he could just say ‘No’ to his mother.
To make matters worse Youko had kept up a running commentary all day long about everything under the sun. Not something he would normally pay any mind to except he somehow managed to keep bringing whatever he was going off on around to Keiko. Again, not really a problem, but for the fact that he dwelled quite heavily on the fact that they now knew she was single.
A fact that had he but known when they were studying together, he was quite positive the fox demon within would have definitely done something about. It was no secret to Kurama that Youko had become quite fond of the human woman during the time that they had spent together last semester. Admittedly his human self had found himself rather intrigued by her as well, but since she was Yusuke’s he had never really considered how he would react if they weren’t together anymore.
Youko, apparently, had.
Finally Kurama had given in to the fox’s prodding.
That was how he found himself staring down at the rather flirty young waitress in the restaurant’s typical black skirt, white blouse ensemble.
“You wanna speak with Keiko?” the tiny woman with long black hair cocked her head to regard him with her big doe eyes. “She hasn’t been to work in over a month. Is there anything I can help you with?”
“WHAT?!” he demanded in a voice that very closely resembled a shout. Except Shuichi Minamino doesn’t shout, so of course it wasn’t. The waitress stopped batting her eyes at him when she noticed his concern. She grew serious.
“Yeah. Haven’t you heard? She disappeared in the middle of a shift, and no one’s seen her since. Not even her parents know where she is. The cops haven‘t turned up anything either.”
This was something he wasn’t looking forward to tell the rest of the Tantei. Especially Yusuke.
/Screw Yusuke! We need to find her. NOW!/
Kurama was having a really bad day.

‘What’s going on? Where’s Papa?’
The small girl stared around in confusion, tears running down her face. The wall above her began to crumble when a loud explosion rocked the building. She stared up at the falling pieces of debris tumbling down toward her. She didn’t even have time to scream before strong arms grabbed her, pulling her to safety.
Her body trembled, and she clung with her face buried into the neck of her rescuer. She could feel something warm and wet trickle down her arm; a stinging burn shot up her arm.
Glancing up through her tears she caught a glimpse of red before she found herself in her father’s embrace. Relief overwhelmed her and she burrowed into his chest, breathing in his smell. He reeked of smoke and gunpowder, but underneath that was the familiar and comforting scent of his favorite cologne, and the chocolate he always carried in his pocket.
Above her head his strong voice rang out, giving commands in a crisp tone. She was safe. Her final thought before blackness engulfed her.
When next her eyes opened she found herself staring up at a smiling woman in a starched white uniform. She looked around. She was laying in a hospital bed, with pale blue sheets drawn up over her chest. Needles pricked the skin of her arm. A glance down showed her the tube leading out from the bandage wrapped around her wrist hand.
“Hi sweetie. I’m glad you’re finally awake.”
Wide brown eyes stared up in confusion.
“You’re a very lucky little girl, did you know that? All the paperwork has been taken care of. Now that you’re awake you’ll get to go home with your new family very soon.”

The detectives had agreed to meet at Genkai’s temple to discuss what they had found. It was something they had gotten into the habit of doing every couple of nights since the whole situation began. At the moment they were waiting for Kurama to make an appearance.
“Well here we go!” Kuwabara dumped a stack of papers on the low table. “I thought we could start small, so I just focused on Japan when I was searching. There are 25,900 research facilities that are known for having genetic studies and experiments underway. Of those 24, 607 specialize in genetic and medical research. Soooo, where do you wanna start Urameshi?”
Yusuke stared at the rather overwhelming stack with a glazed expression. Hiei rolled his eyes before proceeding to ignore them both.
“There has got to be a way to narrow this down. What the hell is Koenma thinking?” the sound of a door opening distracted Yusuke in the middle of his rant. “Yo, Kurama, where the hell have you been?”
“I have some bad news,” the quiet red head ignored the question. The other three stiffened to attention at the serious tone. “Our two cases have officially been bumped up to three. Keiko has been kidnapped.”
“WHAT?!” Again Kurama ignored Yusuke’s outburst, talking over him.
“I talked with some people in the area, and her co-workers. She disappeared the same night that the police were out looking for the murderer of the Prime Minister Taketori.”
“Uh, that’s not good,” Kuwabara spoke to break the tense silence that followed Kurama’s tightly spoken words.
“We have to find her! Quick, Hiei use your trippy third eye to track her down!” He perked up as he had a sudden thought, “And while you’re at it, why don’t you just scan people for who’s doing the genetic experimenting?”
“Trippy third eye?” Kurama turned to face the black haired hanyou in some bemusement.
“You mean I did all that research for nothing?! Damn Koenma! Why didn’t he put the shrimp on this mission if it was that easy?!” Kuwabara demanded in annoyance.
“Idiot!” Hiei ground out in annoyance. “The Jagan doesn’t work like that, Detective.”
“Well we have to do something!” Kuwabara announced decisively.
“Do something about what?” a gentle voice interrupted. The four guys turned to regard the aqua haired beauty who stood at the open shoji screen with a tea tray. Kuwabara scrambled up from his place to greet her, and Hiei took the tray from her before she could even take another step. She smiled gratefully at the fire demon before the well meaning human latched onto her hand and stared down at her with an adoring expression.
“Yukina-san! Thank you for bringing us tea!” Kuwabara gushed at her.
“You’re welcome, as always, Kazuma-kun.” She smiled her sweet smile at him before turning back to the room and repeating, “Do something about what?”
“Um, Keiko-san has been kidnapped, Yukina-san,” Kurama spoke softly, regretfully into the deafening silence that followed her question.
Crimson eyes widened in horror, and she gasped. Immediately she turned to Hiei, who cringed under her hopeful gaze.
“Hiei-san, can find her, can’t you Hiei-san?”
Staring into the tearing-up eyes so much like his own, Hiei did not have the heart to deny his twin anything. He glanced at Kurama, who shrugged helplessly back. Ignoring Yusuke’s smirk and Kuwabara’s jealous look he bowed his head. “I will try, Yukina-san.”
Yukina clapped, brightening, “Oh thank you Hiei-san! I’m sure you will find her in no time!”
Hiei turned away, feeling unworthy of the faith she placed in his ability. He stalked toward the door.
“Come Fox. I need to go where the Detective’s woman last was since that’s where her energy signature is likely to be strongest.”
“Hey! She’s not my woman!” Yusuke yelled after them both.

Clunk! Clunk!
Chunky combat boots with a heavy tread threaded their way down the sidewalk. The oversized faded blue jeans wrapped around the legs of the individual wearing said boots were bunched above the top; obviously intended for a person with much longer legs. The same could be said for the waist of the pants; instead of wrapping comfortably to the waist it rode low on the hips, exposing the points of hipbones. The simple black tank top that showed her belly button had an offensive English slogan on it. A bright yellow bandanna was tied around the slender girl’s forehead, spikes of brown hair falling around her face and loosely down her back. A set of rose-red shades rested on top of the bandanna, and a hideous green coat swished with each step the girl took.
Pedestrians instinctively moved out of the way.
*What do you think Unschuld?*
‘I think I look stupid. How can you wear clothes like this?’
*What‘s wrong with my clothes?! The whole point of jamming you into my clothes is so you won‘t be recognized. The point of me riding along is so that I can get some business taken care of in a way I won‘t be recognized. Besides, it‘s not like you have much choice at the moment until we get you some new ones, so don’t bitch. *
‘You’re right, I’m sorry.’
*Now come mein reizand, we have much to do, and we’re running out of time to do it in.*
