Chapter 4: Alaric
***
The caterpillar
lumbered into Alaric’s courtyard, and Hiei sighed. It had taken them the better
part of three days to cover the same distance that would take him hours to
cross on his own. They hadn’t stopped; Yukina had curled up in a blanket on the
worm’s back when she wished to sleep, but Hiei stayed
awake the whole time. That was mainly so he could keep watch on his sister, but
he doubted he could have slept. It was the first time since Yusuke took him
that they’d been apart for more than a day; he didn’t like it. His place was at
his Toushin’s side. And he was missing whatever mischief
Yusuke and Kurama were getting into together.
The worm ground
to a halt to a flourish of trumpets. Mukuro was pulling out all the stops; she
had lined up a squad of her least revolting soldiers as a welcome party, and
she had polished the castle itself to a shine. He’d never seen the place so
clean. As Hiei helped Yukina down from the caterpillar’s back, Mukuro’s eyes were glued on the ice maiden. Hiei smirked.
He could See that she’d finally found a genuine attraction, not the scrambling
desperation she’d shown with him. To her, that was worth all the rank and
treasure she’d accumulated. Yukina would be safe with her.
“Greetings, Lord
Hiei, Lady Yukina,” she announced. “I welcome you to Alaric.” She swept a bow;
Yukina responded with a curtsy and Hiei with a nod. Mukuro lowered her voice so
the honor guard couldn’t hear: “Hiei, can I convince you to stay until
morning?”
“No, thanks.”
“I’m sorry
about, you know.”
“It’s not that.
But it better not happen again.”
“It won’t.”
Mukuro glanced at Yukina with a wistful expression that he knew very well. She
would die before allowing harm to a single hair on Yukina’s
head … or else Hiei would kill her an inch at a time.
He nodded his approval.
“You have
everything you need, sister?”
“Yes, brother.” She kissed him lightly on the forehead.
“I’ll be fine. I know you’re eager to get home.” Home.
He liked the sound of that.

Mukuro watched
Hiei speed into Alaric’s wasteland, using every advantage his youki gave him; she didn’t doubt that he was on the
straightest line to Tourin. That left her alone with
the fascinating Lady Yukina. The demure ice maiden, wrapped in a kimono of airy
pastels, was a glimpse into a world that Mukuro barely knew existed. She looked
around her with barely concealed wonder, unperturbed by Alaric’s grotesqueries.
That such a creature lived, let alone chose to be in Mukuro’s
company, was almost beyond her understanding. Still, she was not one to let cofusion pull a chance out of her fingers; she cleared her
throat. “May I offer you a tour, Lady Yukina?”
“Yes, Please!”
She knew that her
soldiers were laughing their asses off at her. She found that, with Yukina’s hand laid gently in the crook of her elbow, she
didn’t much care. As they walked into the fortress, she explained about Hotaru-no-Ou and the origins of the quasi-living carapace.
To her surprise, Yukina could sense its primitive mind through her healing
power. “Shell-san likes being a shelter, so it’s in a good mood. And the air is
nice and humid here, too.”
“Humid? Why is
that important?”
“Ice, remember?”
Yukina sent out a coil of youki; a flower of ice
coalesced out of the air and dropped into Mukuro’s
hand … where she discovered that its edges were razor sharp.
“Ack!”
Yukina giggled
into her hand and Mukuro realized that she’d done it on purpose. Is she flirting with me? No, it couldn’t
be. But it showed how much her youki was maturing; in
just a few years she’d be a match for her brother. What a demon! Mukuro laughed
in delight. “Well played, my Lady! There’s not many
that have scored on me like that.” And fewer still who could
get away with it. There were no other demons in the hall to see it, but
they would find out soon enough. She led Yukina deeper into the fortress,
pointing out facilities like the kitchens and armory. It wasn’t much to look
at; Alaric was a working castle, not a showpiece, no matter how much scrubbing
it endured. Yukina seemed to find it fascinating anyway.
“I had this built
especially for your visit,” Mukuro said as they came to the upper courtyard.
“My lands aren’t much good for flowers, but we can manage a bit of color.” She
couldn’t help but smile at Yukina’s surprised gasp.
In the center of the courtyard was a saltwater fountain – barely more than a
trickle over a spire of rock, but the point was that the salt attracted
multitudes of butterflies. A vast cloud of insects filled the chamber and
spilled through the jagged rent above their heads where the original great insect
had broken free. Yukina laughed and reached out out
to them; seeral dozen immediately swirled around her
and settled on her hands.
The two demons
strolled around the courtyard, talking about the butterflies and other
inconsequential things. Mukuro had rarely had the chance to simply talk; even
with Hiei, her conversation had been fraught with their past troubles. She felt
warm, as if Yukina was a bonfire shining on her on a cold night. She could not
let this opportunity slip away.
Around sunset
her head cook politely interrupted them. Kuri was one
of Mukuro’s oldest servants, and she was … picky …
about what was good enough for her lord. “Dinner is ready,” she announced,
while covertly looking Yukina over. Mukuro glowered. Kuri
was fortunate in her long service; she was one of the few who could disapprove
of the ice maiden and not lose her station. Or her head.
Kuri blew air out her nostrils, which could mean anything,
and led them to the dining room. The meal was excellent, according to Yukina;
Mukuro barely noticed. All her mind was on the movement of Yukina’s
fingers, the play of light on her hair, the sound of her voice. Mukuro felt an
odd tingle across her skin, as if her body craved the ice maiden’s touch – not
even in a lustful way, which was what she would have expected. She was starting
to suspect that the “maiden” part of Yukina’s race’s
name was as descriptive as the “ice” part. She actively projected an aura of
inviolate purity, such that an ordinary demon passing by wouldn’t even think of
taking liberties. Though it wouldn’t dissuade someone with a positive intent to
harm – such as that Toguro creep, it was a subtle and
effective power. It only added to Yukina’s charm.
Mukuro escorted
her guest to the prepared guest suite; Yukina exclaimed at the carved wooden
furniture, the stained glass window with her valise laid
neatly beneath it … and then she spotted the nose. She squealed and ran over to
it, trying to wrap her arms around it. The shape wasn’t suited to hugging, but
she petted its freckles as it sniffed at her. “It’s so cute! It’s perfect! I’m
going to call it Snuffy. Oh, thank you, Mukuro-san!”
She scampered to Mukuro’s side and flung her arms
around her, then let her go just as quickly. It took Mukuro a moment to register
that she’d just been hugged. She got Yukina settled for the night, then excused herself, trying to keep a shit-eating grin off
her face. She likes me! Maybe there
was hope for her yet.
***
Mukuro hasn’t got a chance.
BTW, Hotaru-no-Ou = King of Fireflies.
Next chapter: Yusuke and Kurama fight bandits … among other
things. Lemon.
