  • Author’s note: Shiori is adorable. I love her. I also adore Keiko (which I know surprises some of you) because her motivations toward Yusuke really are pure. She wants him to be happy. I truly believe she would do anything for him. Such devotion… I adore Keiko.

    Chapter Four

It was a long time before Yusuke fell asleep. Consequently, it was a long time before he awoke the next day. When he finally opened his eyes, Kurama was no longer in bed beside him but sitting at his desk typing away on his laptop.

    “Good afternoon, Yusuke-kun,” said Kurama.

    “Afternoon?” Yusuke asked, sitting up.

    “Barely. It’s quarter past noon.”

Yusuke winced. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to oversleep.”

“I’ve never known a person to mean to oversleep.” Kurama looked at Yusuke over his shoulder and gave him an encouraging smile. “Are you feeling better today?”

    Yusuke shrugged. “Yeah, I guess.”

Kurama stood and sat beside his friend. “It’s fine if you’re not. I won’t fault you for still being upset.”

Yusuke took a deep breath and nodded. “I didn’t see it coming.”

Kurama nodded, indicating for Yusuke to continue. When Yusuke seemed reluctant, Kurama placed his hand on Yusuke’s knee and smiled encouragingly again.

“Yeah… It’s stupid. My body heals if I’m all hyped up on whatever from a fight, but as soon as I feel something else, the Orb doesn’t do shit to heal me. Or maybe it’s because I’m a… y’know. And my body’s still getting used to it.”

“And the man who hit you?”

“I can’t fight a human. Seems unfair. So, when the guy kicked me in the ribs, I kinda just stood there and took it.”

    “Where was your mother?”

Yusuke let out a short, humorless laugh. “She was passed out. It was after one am.”

    “I see…”

    “Don’t make that face.”

Despite Kurama’s attempt to force his face into a stone mask betraying no emotion, Yusuke caught the concern in his friend’s eyes. “What face?” asked Kurama.

“You know what face,” Yusuke replied. “You’re thinking about pitying me. Well, don’t.”

“Self reliant as you claim to be, I often wonder whether you avoid reaching out because you fear rejection.”

    Yusuke sighed. “Crap,” he muttered.

Kurama’s eyes widened in surprise; Yusuke’s reaction was the last one he’d expected. Out-right denial was at the top of the list. Seeming to agree with Kurama’s assessment had a firm position at the very bottom.

    “I’m whining again,” Yusuke continued.

“I thought you understood that I’m glad to lend an ear.”

“People don’t mean it when they say stuff like that.” Yusuke shook his head. “Anyway, I guess I should go say hi to your mom.”

Kurama nodded. He frowned at Yusuke’s retreating back and wondered if his sudden comfort with telling Kurama his problems was part of his transformation or if something else was going on.

Meanwhile, Yusuke was having a light conversation with Shiori about the wedding. He was carefully avoiding mentioning Keiko and went so far as to shrug when Shiori asked if she would be his date. Her radiant smile at his non-committal response was out of place but welcome just the same. Yusuke was forming more and more of an attachment to Shiori every time he saw her. Before, Yusuke would have been reluctant to let anyone get close to him, now he wished dearly that Shiori was his mother. A brief musing that if he married into the family, Shiori would be his mother in law was suppressed after the image of Kurama in a wedding gown was forced into his mind by the thought. He nodded in response to Shiori’s question about her chosen flavor of cake that he did, indeed, like strawberry mousse and laughed when she launched into a story about how Kurama used to adore strawberries so much as a kid that she’d occasionally have to scold him about ruining his appetite by eating a whole carton.

“He was quite the character as a child,” she concluded.

“Makes sense,” said Yusuke. He leaned on the kitchen table and grinned. “He’s still kind of a character.”

Shiori smiled. “Yes. I’m so glad the two of you are friends. He’s so fond of you…” A slight flush crept into Shiori’s face which Yusuke found odd but didn’t mention.

Kurama came down the stairs just then and entered the kitchen. “Sorry it took so long,” said Kurama. “I was in the middle of a difficult Physics problem.”

“S’alright, man,” said Yusuke. “We were just talking about how much you liked strawberries when you were a kid.” He flashed Kurama a devilish grin.

“Are you telling stories about me again, Mother?” Kurama asked, a half smile betraying that he wasn’t actually annoyed.

“You were so darling, Shuuichi,” Shiori replied. “I couldn’t resist.”

Kurama chuckled. “I was a problem child and you know it.”

Shiori waved a dismissive hand. “You were just an independent child. Your birth remains the happiest day of my life.”

Shiori didn’t catch the sad look in Kurama’s eyes when she said that but Yusuke sure did. He grimaced at his friend. “You wanna take a walk?” he asked.

“Sure,” Kurama agreed. He wondered if Yusuke wanted to talk with him about something and was eager to lend his ear and advice again. Yusuke made him felt needed. It was a wonderful sensation for Kurama who never felt particularly accepted. He always felt as though he were apart from the world of humans. He wasn’t quite demon either and it dawned on him as he and Yusuke approached the park that Yusuke’s recent transformation into a demon meant that they now had quite a bit in common. Even if their predicaments were opposite of each other, he was intrigued by the similarity.

“It’s finally kinda nice out. About time too, thought it would be freezing clear through April.” He grinned but suddenly remembered that the next day was his birthday. For some reason, he couldn’t get excited about turning 16. It seemed young for what he’d been through. He was sure he’d lived at least 10 lifetimes of trouble by now. “I’m weird.”

    “How so?”

Yusuke paused. He didn’t understand why he suddenly blurted that out. It was as if he’d lost control of his words and he wasn’t even sure what he’d meant. “After dying twice, I feel like I should be an adult already.”

    Kurama nodded.

Yusuke laughed suddenly. “Coulda been worse. You had to start over when you died.”

“Most people do.” Kurama smiled although the expression didn’t reach his eyes.

    “Huh?”

“If you believe in reincarnation, you believe that once a person dies, they have to begin anew in a different life.”

“Why did you do what you did then?”

Kurama gave Yusuke a severe look.

“Hey,” said Yusuke. “I’m glad you did or else I wouldn’t have met you but still…”

Kurama sighed. “I didn’t believe I would be reincarnated. Sinners do not get a swift re-do. I would have gone to Hades first.”

“So, you wanted to start over and do better?”

Kurama stopped walking and leaned sideways into a tree. “Not exactly. I told you that I had every intention of returning to Makai when I regained enough strength. It was only because of my mother that I stayed.”

“I don’t blame you. She’s…” Yusuke trailed off. He’d been thinking that Shiori was the mom he wished he had but realized how strange that would sound. “She’s something else.” Yusuke smiled at Kurama. He leaned sideways and braced himself with his elbow on the tree.

A sense of electricity filled the air around the pair as Yusuke caught Kurama’s gaze. The silence was thick and the air swelled with tension. A light breeze ruffled Kurama’s hair and the redhead finally managed to tear his gaze away from Yusuke’s wonderfully melancholy gaze. “Tell me about your mother,” said Kurama.

Yusuke smirked and pushed off from the tree. “You sound like a therapist,” he joked as the pair continued their walk. “My mom’s okay,” Yusuke started when he realized Kurama was about to talk. “She’s… decent. And… y’know… I love my mom. It’s just she’s got these asshole friends. And she can’t help it if I was born when she was 15.”

Kurama disagreed; Atsuko had every option not to have Yusuke at such a young age, but he held his tongue.

“I think about it and I’m like ‘my mom already had a kid at my age’ and I freak out a little. Because, if I had a kid right now… well, let’s just say he’d grow up more fucked up than me. So, I don’t blame her.”

    “And the man?”

“He’s a douche bag. But unless he attacks my mom, or I think he’s hurting her, I can’t touch him.” Yusuke sighed and dug around in his pocket for a cigarette. He didn’t smoke very often but right now seemed like a good time for a smoke. When he came up empty, Yusuke let his hands fall to his sides and sighed again. “Right in the ribs… damn…” Yusuke absentmindedly rubbed his abdomen and winced in spite of the lack of injury.

When Yusuke looked up at his silent friend, he was shocked to see such sadness swirling behind Kurama’s eyes. “Hey… I didn’t want you to get all depressed about it…” he muttered.

    Kurama shook his head.

Yusuke reached out and took hold of Kurama’s wrist. The pair halted awkwardly due to Yusuke’s sudden gesture. “I’m okay.” Kurama didn’t look convinced so Yusuke pulled the kitsune into him, wrapping his arms around Kurama in a fierce hug.

“Yusuke?” Kurama whispered after a silent moment of being crushed into his friend’s chest.

Was it Kurama’s imagination or did Yusuke nuzzle his neck before pulling away? Yusuke shrugged. “I should head home-“

    “No,” Kurama interrupted.

“Listen, man, I can take care of myself. A Yakuza prick is no match for me.”

“That’s not…” Kurama shook his head. “Never mind. I’ll see you soon, I suppose.”

Yusuke nodded but it took him a moment to walk away in the direction of his house and even as he walked, he could feel Kurama’s disappointed gaze lingering on his back.

    - = - = -

Well, this is awesome… Yusuke thought, turning over in his bed. After being informed by his mother that the man who’d kicked Yusuke the day before was “yesterday’s news” Yusuke was treated to the sound of Atsuko and a different man laughing and doing I don’t even want to know what else… while he tried to sleep.

More and more, Yusuke was finding that he missed having Kurama’s warmth settled next to him in bed. He tried to explain it away but nothing he could think of sounded convincing. He knew damn well that he wasn’t cold alone in his bed, the temperature was just fine. He didn’t feel unsafe without the redhead beside him because, let’s face it, he’s kind of a small fry compared to me and he knew that while Kurama’s bed was definitely more comfortable than his own, it was still a bullshit excuse.

To make matters worse, his legs were starting to ache. He wasn’t sure what was causing it, but it felt like he’d run for 20 miles past his endurance and his calf-muscles were twitching uncomfortably.

Yusuke flipped over on his stomach and pressed the pillow against the sides of his face. The sounds from his mother’s room were getting louder.

“This is fucking ridiculous…” Yusuke muttered. He sat up and tossed aside the blankets. A pounding sensation filled his head for a moment. It reminded him of the feeling he’d had in Makai when his brain had been invaded momentarily. The sensation frightened him. He leaped out of the bed with his fists clenched and bolted from the house.

    - = - =

Yusuke didn’t remember going to Kurama’s house. He didn’t remember crawling into bed beside the redhead and he had no recollection of pulling Kurama into his arms. But he didn’t have time to ponder what had happened when he woke up because all he knew was that every muscle in his body ached and his head felt like it was on fire.

As soon as he managed to wake up enough to realize where he was, he became aware of the sound of his whimpering and that his face was buried in Kurama’s chest.

Kurama was stroking Yusuke’s back and making soothing shushing noises.

“Did you have a nightmare, Yusuke?” Kurama whispered.

“Nuh-uh…” Yusuke moaned. “Ugh…” He lifted his head and released the vice-grip he had on Kurama’s shirt. “Sorry, man.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

Yusuke rubbed his eyes with the heels of his hands. “My head is killing me, the rest of my body hurts and I don’t remember how I got here…” Yusuke let his head sink into the pillow. His eyes snapped open when he felt a cool palm pressed to his cheek.

    “You don’t remember?” Kurama asked.

Yusuke swallowed hard, making an almost comical ‘gulp’-ing noise as he did so. “Uh… did I do something weird?”

Kurama smiled. “Not at all.” He leaned in, his hand still pressed to Yusuke’s cheek and his lips uncomfortably close to Yusuke’s face. “You just came in, lay down and went to sleep.”

“Wh-what ar- what are you…?” Yusuke’s heart, while not beating, felt as if it was racing.

Kurama pulled away suddenly, looking startled. He sat up and pulled his hair over his right shoulder. “I’m sorry,” he muttered looking down at his hands which were fiddling with his hair.

    “It’s alright. But, what-?”

“Don’t worry about it, Yusuke.” Kurama flashed him a reassuring smile but Yusuke wasn’t fooled. The days when Kurama could fool him with his nonchalant act were gone. Yusuke wasn’t sure when it had happened, but it seemed that over time, he’d gotten better at seeing past that mask.

In spite of Kurama’s lie, Yusuke decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and didn’t bother contradicting him. Besides, he wasn’t terribly upset with Kurama’s touch.

The momentary distraction of Kurama’s odd behavior past and Yusuke was filled with that inescapable ache in his bones. A wave of Kurama’s ki washed over him and the ache disappeared. “Wow,” said Yusuke. “Thanks, man.”

    “What for?”

    “You sent me ki, right?”

Kurama shook his head. “You probably borrowed some unconsciously.” Yusuke gave Kurama a look that stated quite clearly that he planned to apologize profusely. “Don’t worry. I don’t mind. I have more than enough. In fact, each person has in their arsenal nearly infinite spiritual energy, it’s simply difficult for some to access it.”

“I guess accessing most of it is that sacred energy shit.”

Kurama nodded. “That’s a pretty succinct way to put it. Are you hungry?”

    “Now that you mention it…”

    “Good. Let’s go out.”

    Yusuke’s eyes widened. “W-wha-?”

    “For brunch, Yusuke.”

“Wait. Are you asking me out?”

Kurama chuckled “You may take the invitation any way you wish.” Kurama stood and looked through his closet for an outfit to loan Yusuke. He rejected several options before settling on a pair of khaki pants and a light yellow shirt. He tossed them on the bed. “You may borrow these,” he explained.

Yusuke nodded; his mouth suddenly dry. It wasn’t that he didn’t like wearing Kurama’s clothes. In fact, the problem was that he felt almost too comfortable in them. The scent of Kurama surrounding him and wafting into his nose every time he moved was intoxicating. Yusuke began changing, not bothering to turn or conceal his nakedness from Kurama. The result of which was that Kurama got a very good look at what he’d long suspected to be an Adonis-like beauty. Kurama was pleased, for once, that he’d underestimated Yusuke.

Kurama turned and carried his own outfit to the bathroom to change. While in there (and away from the rather appealing distraction of Yusuke’s muscular legs and torso and his delicious-looking cock…) Kurama was finally able to berate himself for his earlier behavior. He knew that Yusuke was still getting used to his new body and the boy couldn’t help it if his closeness had aroused Kurama. It wasn’t fair for Kurama to take advantage of him while he was vulnerable.

Except that Kurama hadn’t even been aware he’d touched Yusuke until his friend had panicked. And it was fortunate that Yusuke’s high-pitched freak-out had snapped Kurama out of the trance. Otherwise, Yusuke wouldn’t have made it another day with his virginity intact.

Not that Kurama would take him without permission, the kitsune just knew that Yusuke wouldn’t be able to resist and Kurama didn’t want to take the chance that their friendship would be ruined. At the very least, I’ll be able to look at him…

So, did you guys enjoy the little insight into Kurama’s thoughts this chapter? It’s mainly Yusuke-centric but it IS technically third person omniscient. So…
