A/N: This chapter was a strange struggle for me... it was just fighting the whole time. But I finally forced it to behave enough to get it all down and mostly how I wanted it. Hopefully the next one won't take as long. Enjoy!
Dark red lashes slowly fought their way open and somewhat hazy green eyes took in the familiar sight of one of the rooms of the temple. He felt two strong comforting arms around him and a small smile tugged at his mouth. “Hiei…” he murmured.
Instantly, the man behind him stiffened for the briefest moment before the arm’s tightened. “Fox. It’s about time you woke up…” he said, unable to actually voice his worry. But Kurama could tell he had been without words. His body language was unmistakable. “My apologies… I’ll try to wake up faster next time,” Kurama said; smile still creasing his pretty mouth. “How long was I asleep?” “Almost three days,” Hiei answered, sounding somewhat strangled. “Yukina wasn’t sure you’d survive…” he added in a whisper so low Kurama almost hadn’t caught it. Kurama shifted some so that he could look up at his mate. “You must have been worried. Thank you for watching over me, Hiei,” he said, raising a hand to brush his fingers through the other demon’s spiky bangs. Ruby eyes softened a fraction. “You don’t have to thank me for that,” he said. Kurama gave him a slightly larger smile and Hiei gave in to temptation and gave his mate a slow kiss. Kurama instantly responded to the kiss, letting Hiei into his mouth without a single hesitation. The two demons kissed for several minutes before Hiei reluctantly pulled back before he became too aroused. Kurama was in no shape for that amount of intimacy yet. “Yukina will want to check on you,” Hiei murmured, brushing Kurama’s hair back. Kurama smiled slightly. “In a bit. I want to spend time with just you for a little while,” he said, nuzzling against Hiei’s neck and shoulder. “You’re not well yet, Fox,” Hiei grunted although he was secretly pleased by the redhead’s statement. Kurama chuckled a bit; a sound Hiei had been longing to hear for months. “I’m not saying we’ll be doing anything particularly strenuous, Firefly… but you just holding me makes me not care right this moment if I’m perfectly healthy.” Hiei grunted some. “Sentimental youko…” Kurama smiled but didn’t reply and just closed his eyes to enjoy being held by the man he loved. He slowly became aware of the ki that Hiei was feeding him constantly and how most of it was being directed to his stomach. His smile fell some and he shifted his hands to cover Hiei’s on his swollen abdomen. “This must bother you…” he said softly. “Rest, Kurama. We’ll deal with it later,” Hiei said, not particularly wanting to get into a sensitive topic with his mate the moment he woke up. It could very easily lead to tension that didn’t need to be there at the moment. The redhead sighed some, slightly relieved by that. “… thank you, Hiei.” The fire demon grunted again to show he’d heard but let the room lapse into silence again. They sat like that for almost an hour before Yukina found them out and insisted on checking Kurama and the twins. “You should have called me the moment you woke up,” she admonished as she examined her pregnant patient. Kurama smiled at the little Koorime. “I just wanted to spend some time with Hiei, Yukina. I promise I just stayed here in bed and didn’t even try to move,” he assured her. She frowned some but left it at that and went back to her examine. Yusuke however wasn’t as docile. “Man, you should have called us! We’ve been worried sick about you, Fox-boy!” he scolded from where he was sitting nearby. Kurama chuckled some at how much like a mother hen the detective was currently acting but knew the moment would pass fast enough. “It’s about time you woke up though. Maybe now Hiei will stop acting like a guard dog all the time.” “Guard dog?” Hiei echoed in a dark voice. Kurama laughed some but attempted to hide it behind his hand. “Watch your mouth detective… you might find a sword removing that wagging tongue of yours.” They continued to chat while Yukina finished her examine, steadfastly avoiding any mention of the bulge under Kurama’s robe by an unspoken agreement. Finally the young demoness leaned back with a sigh. “Well, other than being a bit thin and weak you seem to be almost completely healed, Kurama,” she announced. “You still have to take it easy though.” Kurama nodded. “Believe me, I’m in no hurry to get involved in anything strenuous right now, Yukina. I’m far too tired for it.” “You should eat something more substantial than what you’ve been getting,” Yukina said getting to her feet. “I’ll fix you something right now.” Knowing better than to try and talk her out of it Kurama nodded. “That would be wonderful. Thank you, Yukina.” She gave him a smile and left the room with an armful of dirty bandages she’d removed from Kurama’s almost healed body. All that he really needed now was a few large bandages over the worst wounds and time to recover. A sudden awkward silence fell over the room. Kuwabara shifted in his seat and looked off into the distance while the Kurama leaned back against his mate and Yusuke scratched the side of his face awkwardly. It was Yusuke who broke first. “Kurama… this is really fuckin’ awkward but-” “You’re wondering who the father is,” Kurama finished for him. Hiei’s arms tightened around him some and the redheaded fox sighed heavily. “Believe me, Yusuke I truly wish I knew… but we’ll have to wait until the baby is at least born maybe even not until power start to develop to know for sure.” “Babies,” Kuwabara corrected. Kurama looked over at him with confusion painted on his somewhat too thin face. “Yukina said she could sense two…” he explained for his friend. Kurama’s eyes widened at that and his hand tightened on his abdomen. He wasn’t large enough to be carrying twins. And he hadn’t sensed two before, although he was admittedly not in any condition to be sensing much of anything at the time. Hiei, sensing his mate’s distress, lowered his head to brush his lips across Kurama’s ear. “It’s alright, Fox. Yukina’s been monitoring them. Other than being small they seem to be gaining strength.” Kurama let out the breath he hadn’t known he’d been holding. “Alright…” he breathed. “That… we can handle that,” he said as his brain quickly worked to process this new bit of information. It was still entirely overwhelming and scary but the more that he thought and worked two into his plans the less scary it became. He had been caught off guard was all. “Hell yeah we can handle that!” Yusuke agreed instantly. “Don’t you worry, Kurama! The whole gang’ll help you and Hiei out with this. Well… I’ll probably not be much help -I know shit about babies- but the girls and Kuwabara for sure!” “Hey! You can’t just let the rest of us take care of everything, you punk!” Kuwabara protested instantly. Yusuke gave the orange-haired psychic a bland look. “Oh please… any kid of Kurama’s will be freakin’ adorable and you’ll be all over that,” he pointed out. “Like little kittens.” Kuwabara seemed to think on that for a minute and a goofy smile suddenly crossed his face. “Heh… they will be pretty cute -hey! That’s not the point!” he snapped angrily. Kurama ducked his head to hide his amusement at his two friends’ antics. “Kazuma! You shouldn’t yell in a sick room,” Yukina scolded lightly as she brought in a tray of food and put it beside Kurama and Hiei. “But Yukina! Urameshi started it!” Kuwabara protested as his friend snickered. Yukina sent her husband a slight frown, which instantly cowed the much larger man. “He still started it…” he muttered as he folded his arms and looked away. Kurama dutifully started eating under Yukina’s watchful gaze but it hadn’t escaped his attention that Hiei was being very quiet behind him. More so than Kurama had expected from him anyway. “I always thought Kuwabara would be the first to have kids…” Yusuke mused. “Course… I didn’t really think you and Hiei would have kids at all. Man, Shiori’s gonna flip-” Kurama instantly dropped the glass he’d been holding. “Mother! She must be worried sick!” Hiei sent their leader a glare and tightened his hold on Kurama so that the fox didn’t try to get up. “Oh, Hiei, I have to talk to her!” “Easy, Fox. If you talk to her now she’ll want to see you and we have no way of explaining this to her,” Hiei reasoned. “Yusuke called to tell her we were close to finding you but any more than that and she’ll want to see you.” Kurama opened his mouth to protest but then closed it again with a sigh when he realized Hiei was right. But still, he knew how worried Shiori would be especially after months of him being missing. “I can’t let her think I’m still in danger, Hiei…” Kurama argued gently. “There must be something we can tell her…” “Without being able to see you, Fox, it would only serve to torment her,” Hiei stated firmly. He knew it would hurt Kurama to hear that but he had to be the voice of reason when it came to Shiori. Kurama would always be ruled by his heart in that area. “It’s best to wait until you can actually see her before giving her anymore information.” “But that’s in months!” “Kurama… Hiei’s right,” Yusuke said softly. “I know it sucks but there’s no way around it.” Kurama looked between the two of them before sighing in defeat and looking away. Just because he knew they were right didn’t mean he had to like it. He hated hurting his mother and deliberately allowing her to remain ignorant to the fact he was safe would definitely be hurting her. Perhaps it was time to tell Shiori the truth about him. But then again… being told your son is a demon and pregnant at the same time would be a bit much even for such a wonderfully loving mother like Shiori. Yusuke chuckled slightly awkwardly. “I don’t suppose there’s a magical demon pregnancy speed up thingy is there?” he asked in an attempt to lighten the mood. Kurama appreciated his effort even if it didn’t work all that much. “I’m afraid not, Yusuke… It’ll be several months still until my pregnancy ends.” “Don’t worry, Kurama! I’m sure Kazuma and the others will help keep Shiori from being too upset while you stay here,” Yukina said taking the fox’s hand in hers. Kurama offered the Koorime a smile though he knew that there wouldn’t be much the others could do to help his mother from being upset. Having your son missing without a trace for months on end simply wasn’t something you could be ‘not too upset’ about. “Alright out,” Hiei said gruffly. “Kurama needs to rest.” Yukina instantly nodded in agreement. “Yes, he’s still very weak,” she agreed getting to her feet and going to shoo her husband and Yusuke out in front of her. “We’ll see you later, Kurama!” Yusuke called as the small female almost pushed him out of the room. “We’ll keep everything under control don’t worry.” “Yeah! You rest up!” Kuwabara agreed before the door slid shut. Kurama smiled slightly at their attempts to cheer him up. Hiei however was less than amused. “Fools,” he grumbled before turning his attention to the redhead in his arms. They hadn’t moved an inch in all the time Kurama had been awake but he certainly didn’t mind. After the state he’d found his mate in he wasn’t in any sort of hurry to let the fox go. “You should finish eating, Fox. You’re too thin.” “I’ll finish it, Firefly, don’t worry,” Kurama promised though he didn’t reach for his plate again. Silence covered the room again though it was slightly less comfortable than it had been before their friends visited. “Hiei… are you sure you’re alright with this?” he asked quietly. Hiei grunted in reply. The redhead sighed at the less than helpful answer. “Hiei, please… I’d like more than a grunt on this…” The little fire demon sighed and opened his eyes. “I don’t know, Kurama. Right now, I’m trying to just think about them as yours… and not who fathered them,” he answered honestly. Kurama could probably have seen through a lie if he’d tried one anyway. Kurama was silent for a long moment before snuggling closer to his mate. “Thank you, Hiei… that means a lot to me.” Hiei grunted again and let the conversation once again die out. The silence was comfortable again and Hiei realized he’d missed the comfortable silence since the Fox had been kidnapped. One of the things he liked most about Kurama, other than how incredibly sex he was, was that they didn’t often need to talk to simply enjoy each other’s company. Most other couples Hiei knew (despite the fact that the number was under half a dozen) would most likely be talking in this time. But they didn’t need to. Kurama was the only person Hiei could simply sit and be with for no real purpose other than being with him. Hiei sighed slightly and nuzzled his mate’s neck. “I missed you,” he murmured. He didn’t have to say it but he did anyway. Kurama smiled. “I missed you too, Firefly…”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
