Chapter 5 of 18
Lunch In The Park
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The young salesman made his way back over to the two demons, carrying the requested item.
"It just so happens we do have it, just in a slightly different style." The salesman held up the red leather jacket with the metallic zippers. It really was only slightly different from the black jacket. The red jacket had silver-toned studs across the shoulders and around the collar.
"It's perfect, thank you." Kurama said as he took the jacket and inspected it. Even though it wasn’t exactly like Hiei’s choice, it was red and flashy, he liked it.
"So, can I have your name?" The young salesman asked quietly while taking a step closer.
"Oh…..…I don't know about that." Kurama smiled coyly, tilting his head to the side so his hair fell invitingly over his shoulder. Hiei raised an eyebrow, instantly intrigued. He knew the demon side of the redhead was making an appearance.
"Why not? You are a pretty boy, and just my type."
"Do you truly think so?” Kurama asked as he leaned a little closer to the clerk, a sultry smile appearing on his lips. “Want to know a secret? ……. I’ve been told that before.”
“Very Pretty, which is something you should hear everyday.” The sales rep affirmed, his voice husky. “So your name?”
“Hmmmm.” Kurama seemed to think it over, even adding a little lick to his top lip for effect. “I haven’t gotten your name either and what if you find out that I’m not a nice guy?”
Hiei couldn’t stop himself, he snickered a little; the fox was very good at flirting and seemed to be enjoying himself. He had the human male’s rapt attention.
“My name is Dai, and there no way you’re not a nice guy.” The young salesman declared.
“How would you know that, we have just met?” Kurama flipped his long red hair back over his shoulder, making the alluring smell of roses fill the air.
"You would have to be a nice guy! You are buying a really expensive jacket for your younger brother." The salesman answered, gesturing towards the fire demon. "Now that you know my name, when will you tell me your name?"
"Well………I tend to be a very nice guy on many occasions." Kurama answered as he moved closer to his friend. With a mischievous smirk, the redhead slipped his arm around Hiei's arm and leaned against him. The sales rep’s eyes widen considerably, but his wasn't the only ones. Hiei was a little startled at first, he quickly recovered though, enjoying the little show. Kurama’s voice was seductive when he spoke. "You see this isn't my little brother, this is my lover. As for my name, you have to ask him. He tends to be very possessive of me."
"You don’t need to know my lover’s name." Hiei growled lowly, easily playing his part in the situation.
"My mistake, I'm very sorry." The salesman apologized, taking a big step back when the fire demon fixed him with a nasty glare. He bowed deeply and then made a hasty retreat without another word.
Kurama started laughing while letting go of the fire demon's arm. "Thank you, Hiei."
Hiei was chuckling as well. "I must say that was pretty good, Fox. Your flirting is quite proficient.”
"What can I say? I have had plenty of experience in that area. Maybe one day you will see how I flirt when I’m actually interested.” Kurama picked up the black jacket again, smiling at his friend. “So, will I be purchasing this jacket as a gift for you?"
"Since you seem to have one then I will take it." Hiei nodded his approval.
"Good! Let me pay for them, then we can leave." Kurama began walking towards the checkout counter with Hiei following beside him.
A woman cashier rang them up smiling brightly, her voice soft as she removed the theft deterrent devices. "Would you like me to wrap the jackets up or will you be wearing them now?"
"I think I will wear mine." Kurama answered, picking up the red jacket. "Can you cut the tags off?"
"Yes, Sir." The woman quickly pulled out a pair of scissors from under the counter. She cut all the tags off of the red jacket before turning to the shorter dark haired male. "Do you want the tags cut off your jacket too?"
"Hn." Hiei only grunted.
"Yes, but can you put that jacket in a bag please?" Kurama asked while taking off the light jacket he wore and then shrugging into his new red leather jacket. The lady done as she was asked and handed the bag to the taller customer. Kurama stuffed his old jacket into the bag too.
"Thank you and please come again, Sir." The lady cashier gave them a large smile and a little bow.
"Thank you, I'm sure we will." Kurama replied before following Hiei out the door. Once outside he quickly found an alley and pulled the fire demon into it.
"Why do you pull on me so?" Hiei asked as he snatched his arm away from the fox.
"Because." Was Kurama's only answer while pulling the black jacket out of the bag. "Do you have your tank top on under that cloak?"
"Yes. Why?"
"So you can wear your new jacket." Kurama replied, holding the item out to the fire demon. To have Hiei wearing something he had bought for him was very thrilling, it almost felt like he was claiming him.
"I guess so,……..but one wrong comment from a ningen and it comes off." Hiei huffed.
"Agreed." Kurama could only smile as Hiei removed his cloak and dropped it into the bag. Hiei then took the offered jacket, shrugging it on. Kurama couldn’t stop himself from stepping a little closer and reaching out to slid his fingers across the smooth shiny leather that laid against the fire demon’s chest. "You look good, Hiei."
“So do you, Fox.” Hiei gently wrapped his hand around the slender wrist of the hand that was touching him. He was pleased to see a light dusting of pink spread over the redhead’s nose and cheeks. He liked very much that he could make the naughty, centuries old Youko blush. Running on impulse alone, he leaned forward while pulling Kurama down to his height so he could whisper near the redhead’s ear. “This jacket is the first gift I have received since I was given my dead mother’s tear gem. Thank you.”
Kurama closed his eyes and savored the moment. He was happy for having done this for the fire demon and it was also a sad situation because his friend had never received a gift before. The tear gem didn’t actually count as far as he was concerned because that was something owed to the fire demon. Kurama would make sure to give Hiei gifts again in the future. His breath left him in a rush when he felt the ghost of a kiss against his cheek and then everything was gone. Kurama opened his eyes to see the fire demon standing at the opening of the small alley, staring out at the passing people on the sidewalk as if nothing had happened. The fox briefly wondered if it had all been his over active imagination, but then decided it wasn’t. He could feel his skin tingling where they had touched, Hiei had really kissed his cheek. This was something he would always remember.
"Where else you want to go, Fox?” Hiei nonchalantly called back over his shoulder.
Kurama picked up the dropped bag of clothing when something occurred to him that he should have realized sooner. Hiei calling him fox was not just because he was a fox, it had become a pet name for him, something Hiei was using more often. So much hope bloomed in Kurama’s chest that he felt warm, this was really happening. After taking a moment to collect himself, he hurried to the fire demon’s side.
“We can continue window shopping for awhile. Maybe something else will catch our eye and then maybe we can have lunch later.”
“Hn.” Hiei merely grunted in reply.
The demons stepped out into the crowded sidewalk and easily melded into the flow of bodies around them. They continued the day walking along the city streets and talking about the items in the windows of the stores they passed. No other clothes was bought though, they did stop at a vending machine and bought a couple of juices to drink. Nothing else out of the ordinary happened during that time.
About two o'clock, Kurama's stomach started letting him know he was hungry. He glanced to the demon walking at his side. "Are you hungry yet, because I am?"
"I don't really want ningen food, but if I must have it I will eat it." Hiei replied, his voice gruff. He would much rather go back to the apartment to have Kurama’s good food and of course to have him all to himself.
"I know of a good place to eat. We can get a take away order and then we can go eat in a nearby park. I have a secret place."
Hiei reluctantly agreed. "That will be fine.”
“Thank you, Hiei.”
“Hn.”
“Translation: You’re welcome.” Kurama smiled, chuckling a little. The whole day out so far had been similar to a ningen date and it had been fantastic. He had even bought a nice gift, got a kiss for a thank you, and now they were having lunch together. Under demon standards, they were sort of courting which made blood rush through Kurama’s veins in excitement. He actually had a chance at something more then friendship with Hiei. The deep voice drew him from his thoughts.
"Why is it you can read me so well, Fox?" Hiei asked, his instincts buzzing.
"I honestly don't know." Kurama shrugged his shoulders, he didn’t know exactly how to explain it. "I have always been able to read or judge people, you know that. With you it's different, it's like an open book. I just seem to perceive what you are thinking with a single look."
"Which is why I always have to be on guard around you."
"What? Why? Why do you still not trust me?"
"It’s not that! I do trust you which I have affirmed several times now! I don’t trust myself with you!” Hiei shut his mouth with a snap and came to a sudden stop near a building, his eyes were averted downwards. He was embarrassed. He hadn’t meant for that last part to be known knowledge, especially not to the redhead.
Kurama remained silent, there was nothing he could say. He understood the sentiment because he currently didn’t trust his own self with the fire demon. This, the situation between them, was so new and it felt so very fragile. It was minuscule, but the fox noticed when the fire demon’s muscle tightened. Hiei was about to leave.
Kurama didn’t want that to happen so he quickly moved closer and slipped his arm around his friend’s arm. “Please don’t.”
Hiei looked up startled, his red eyes showing that he felt cornered. Kurama started walking again, making sure the fire demon was walking with him. He leaned close so no ningen could hear and offered up a piece of himself, hoping it would help calm the other demon. “I feel the same, I don’t trust myself with you.”
Hiei glanced at the redhead and found only truth shining in forest green eyes. He smiled a little, thankful that he wasn’t the only one feeling out of control. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly as he let his muscles relax. When Kurama didn’t pull away from him, he didn’t either because deep inside himself he admitted that this felt natural, felt right. They continued down the side walk in mutual silence, their arms entwined.
After another block, Kurama finally broke the quiet between them. "The place for lunch is just up ahead."
They stopped in front of an open-air café, looking at an outdoor chalk written menu board. The food the café served changed on a daily basis, which made it popular in the neighborhood.
“What would you like?” Kurama asked after a couple of minutes.
Hiei offered a shrug of his shoulders. “I don’t know, just get me whatever you are ordering yourself.”
“Alright.” Kurama let go of Hiei and entered the café.
Hiei stepped through the door way and then to the side where he could lean against a wall to watch the redhead’s interactions. Kurama briefly waited in line and then stepped up to the counter where he ordered the food. After a few minutes the pretty cashier handed the fox a white bag and two drinks with a saucy wink. Hiei’s attention was drawn to a bubbly voice at his side, his eyes widening a fraction at the girl now standing there. She immediately started talking to him.
Kurama smiled politely at the cashier while declining her offer of meeting up later. He then turned around to go find the fire demon. He was quite surprised to see a bottle blonde haired girl standing next to Hiei, trying really hard to get a response out of him. The demon was watching her out of the corner of his eye with much restraint.
Kurama approached them quickly and made a show of handing the fire demon his drink.
"OH WOW! You're a cutie too!" The girl smiled as she looked the redhead up and down.
"Thank you." Kurama replied, a strained smile on his face. Now normally the fox in him loved compliments from males and females, relished them actually, but at the moment he didn’t particularly feel like playing along. He finally had Hiei’s full attention and wanted to keep it for himself even if if was only for a single day.
"I was trying to get your friend's name and number. He is just so cute and has the prettiest eyes!"
"Yes, well, I do happen to agree with you." Kurama answered honestly, earning himself a pleased smirk from the fire demon.
"He won't give me either one or even say anything to me. Can I have your name and number?" The blonde girl turned fully to the redhead.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I can’t. I am kind of seeing someone at the moment." Kurama went with his usual lie when caught in these types of situations. Though he wasn’t even sure if it was a lie at that point in time because he didn’t know how to describe his and Hiei’s current interactions.
"She is one lucky girl." The blonde-haired young woman replied, little pout on her pink painted lips.
"I guess so." Kurama agreed with a little laugh, smiling at her.
“I’m not a girl!” Hiei stated flatly, his patients having run out. He then grabbed Kurama by the arm, turned away from the girl, and briskly walked them both out of the café.
“Good day.” Kurama managed to be polite to the shocked looking girl as he was manhandled away from her.
They were a full block away from the café before Hiei finally slowed down and then let go of the redhead. His voice was hard when he spoke. "Stupid ningen girl! She could not tell I did not even want to speak to her or that you weren’t interested in her.”
"Sometimes they are that way." Kurama replied as he adjusted the items he carried. He was surprised he hadn’t spilled his drink while he was being pulled along. Though the sentiment behind the show of possessiveness was not unappreciated. "Some of the girls can be very persistent."
"I don't understand how you can be so polite to them when they won’t give up."
"After living here so long it just comes natural. You know that girl was really after you since she was trying so hard. If you're not careful you may even get more ningen girls to like you, like a little fan club."
"I don't think so!" Hiei was disgusted by the very idea of it.
"Hmmm, maybe, maybe not." Kurama offered him a secret smile.
Hiei was done with talk of ningen females. "So where will we be eating, Fox?"
"I know of a very nice place we can eat in the nearby park. It's kind of out of the way, but we won't be bothered by ningen girls."
"Fine by me." Hiei muttered, looking at the weird drink the fox had given him. It was very cold in his hand almost like ice. He brought the straw to his lips and took a small sip. It seemed like it was flavored snow; sweet, milky, and icy. He sort of liked it.
“Follow me.” Kurama instructed as he quickly crossed the street at the corner, the countdown for the crossing signal had already started. Hiei was right with him. They traveled down one more block and then turned on a side street. Three minutes later, they crossed another street and then entered a large lush park. The leaves on the trees had already changed to reds, golds, and yellows for fall. Kurama lead them to a paved walking trail. After about three hundred meters, the fox looked around to make sure they were alone and then ducked into some thick bushes, Hiei followed his example.
"We are almost there." Kurama noted while leading the way down a small foot path in-between the thick bushes that seemed to part for their master. He came to this spot often when he needed to think or wanted time to himself. Hiei would be the first being that he had ever brought there. The path opened up to a small clearing surrounded on all sides by thick trees and bushes. It was very secluded and seemed impenetrable. The fox reached into his hair, pulling out a few seeds. He walked into the shade of a very large old tree, squatted down and dropped the seeds on the ground. Kurama then put his hand over them sending out a small amount of his energy. The ground was instantly covered in a rich green, thick carpet of soft grass. The fox sat back on his butt and crossed his legs, dropping the bag of clothes beside him.
Hiei sat down near him, crossing his legs as well while his eyes surveyed everything about the small clearing. He understood that he had been invited into Kurama’s sanctuary from the human world and he had no doubt there were many seeds scattered throughout the area that would turn into vicious plants if needed with only a outward burst of energy from the fox. He took a sip of his sugary drink while his ears listened to everything around them, all he could hear was the sounds of nature.
“Do you approve?” Kurama asked after a few minutes.
“Yes, the trees are so dense that it appears that we are not in the middle of a ningen city.”
“I helped with that. The trees surrounding this place was already thick, but I did add more trees and extra bushes too. The only way in or out of here is that little path, unless of course if the being can fly.” Kurama indicated the cloud filled blue sky above them.
“Hn.” Hiei merely grunted before he took another swig from the straw.
"What do you think of that drink?" Kurama asked while he removed the food items from the white paper bag. He handed a paper wrapped item and a small package of ponzu flavored potato crisps to Hiei.
“It’s good, tastes like something you have given me at some other time, though I don’t remember it being this cold.” Hiei sat his drink between his legs and proceeded to open the paper wrapped food. Inside he found a thick meat sandwich, cut in half with the crust removed.
“I have.” Kurama answered as he opened up his own sandwich. “It is called Royal Milk Tea. I have given it to you sometimes when you have dinner with me. I have served it to you hot and chilled with ice. This drink is a little different it is blended with ice so it’s almost like it’s frozen.”
“That explains why I thought of snow when I first tasted it.” Hiei admitted and then he took a healthy bite of sandwich. He found the meat still had a very juicy red center and it tasted good.
“I’m happy that you tasted that sandwich on your own without me having to pressure you.” Kurama pointed out and then took a bite of his own sandwich. After he chewed and swallowed, he continued. “I have had this sandwich on a previous trip to the café. It is a Wagyu Katsu Sando, basically a fried wagyu beef steak sandwich. I ordered for it to be cooked rare as you can see, because as demons we both know a little blood always makes the meat taste better. I loved it when I got it for the first time, so I thought you might like it.”
“It is very good, Fox. It’s not cooked to death.” Hiei agreed as he stuffed the last bite of the first half of the sandwich into his mouth.
Kurama offered his companion a smile before he continued eating his own sandwich. It wasn’t long before the sandwiches were gone and then the bags of ponzu flavored crisps too. Kurama then reached into the bag and pulled out one last paper wrapped item. He opened the paper to reveal a dessert sandwich, filled with strawberries, whip cream, and drizzled with honey. He handed half to the fire demon and kept the other half for himself. When dessert was all gone, Kurama laid back on the grass, a long sigh leaving him as he let his body fully relax.
"What did you mean earlier by ‘fan club’?" Hiei asked after wiping his mouth with a napkin.
Kurama turned on to his side and used his left arm as a pillow, facing the fire demon. "It's just a group of people that really like you. A fan club is usually made up of mostly girls, but there are a few boys sprinkled among them and the term is usually only used in high school. Though famous actors, singers, and models do tend to have fan clubs too."
“There is no need for me to ask about your ‘fan club’ in the Makai, I have heard enough of those stories.” A smirk spread across Hiei’s lips when he heard the fox chuckle in amusement. “But do you have a lot in your ‘fan club’ here in the ningen world?"
"Yes, I do." Kurama reached for the white bag from the café and dumped the remaining contents on the ground between them. "It gets bigger everyday too."
"What are these?" Hiei asked as he picked up a white piece of paper from the small pile. He examined it by turning it from one side to the other, finding ningen names and a series of numbers on it.
"The papers contain the names and phone numbers to probably every girl behind the counter at that café. It happens every time I go in there."
"Not much has really changed for you, Fox." Hiei felt doubt rise him. If the fox truly had this many beings after him then what kind of chance did he really have when once again he had absolutely nothing to offer him. After a few quiet seconds, Hiei finally managed to add a very simple fact. "You are still the most lusted after creature in all the three worlds."
"Yes, but it does get old." Kurama replied as he closed his eyes and laid still on the lush grass. He was actually thinking about taking a nap. The battle the previous day, the power struggle with Hiei the previous night, and the mixed signals he had been receiving most of the day from Hiei had left him mentally and physically tired, even if he had wanted to spend the day out in public.
"How so?" Hiei watched the redhead and wondered if he would receive an answer as the silence stretched between them.
After a couple of minutes, Kurama quietly answered his friend. "Well sometimes I wish it would all change. I mentioned this morning that I have thought of having a child, but I want more then just a child, I want it all. I want to settle down, I want a mate, and I want a family.”
"What? I have never heard of a fox demon wanting to settle down and mate. The race is too promiscuous, which you are a prime example of." Hiei didn’t mean for what he said to sound so rude, but it was a simple fact of the Makai.
"This is true, I can’t deny that I was basically a whore in my first life, but I want to be bound to one mate for the rest of my second life. I want love and I want a family, even if it’s a family that I will never be able to share with my human mother." Kurama replied softly, his eyes still closed. He wasn’t sure if the fire demon believed him, but that was to be expected.
"Fox, why are you telling me all of these personal details?"
“I just wanted to share it with someone that I thought would understand me.” Kurama remained lying still on the ground, but now there was a sad smile on his lips. “I’m sorry to have burdened you.”
"You haven’t burdened me."
“I feel that I have, just ignore what I have said.”
“Kurama, it’s fine. I will accept everything of yourself that you deem I am worthy of.” Hiei didn’t realize how intimate that sounded until it was already out of his mouth.
Kurama partially opened his eyes, his voice was a whisper. “Then I shall give even more of myself to you.”
Hiei felt cornered once again and didn’t know how in the hell to respond to that so silence stretched between them.
After several minutes, Kurama closed his eyes again, accepting he wouldn’t be receiving any sort of reply. He pointed to his left arm that was still cushioning his head, more importantly his hand that had little vines tangled around it. “I believe I will take a small nap. You can safely rest too, my plants will alert me if anyone or anything tries breaching this place.”
Hiei stared at the fox, still unsure of the situation. With a sigh he finally laid back on the ground too. There really was no reason not to fully relax. He hardly ever got the chance to do so, but right now, with his fox at his side and surrounded by impenetrable trees it was okay. It was perfect and he could almost see the future Kurama was describing for himself. He wondered though if there was room in the fox’s future for him.
