Chapter 5
Once Upon a Mission
Miki stood in front of Koenma and blinked. “Do you really think I’m ready for a mission?” he asked.
“Of course…” Koenma replayed Miki’s fight with Hiei on his big screen and smirked behind his pacifier. “…I’ve
never seen such ability.”
Kurama spoke up “In all due respect sir…He cannot control it he’s…”
“I’ll go with him.” Hiei said.
Koenma smirked, “Alright then.” He pressed his clicker and the image of a ravenous and possibly feral wolf demon
appeared on the screen. “This is the Wolf demon Imakô. He’s been abducting humans and entrapping them in a labyrinth driving
them insane with mind games.”
Miki sighed, “I see and I’m guessing Imakô is in the center of this labyrinth.”
“Correct.”
It was with this information that Miki and Hiei took their leave.
Miki looked at the dark clouded Makkai sky with wide eyes. “Do the storms ever stop?” he asked and looked at Hiei.
“No…” Hiei said bluntly and began to walk towards the labyrinth dungeon.
Following close behind Miki wondered why Hiei was being so distant. “Hiei…”
“Hm…” Hiei grunted in reply not turning to look to Miki.
“Are you mad at me?”
Hiei didn’t answer.
Miki looked to the ground and went silent. “He’s mad…why is he mad?” It got to the point that he lost track of his step.
In fact he had stopped walking altogether.
“MIKI!!!” Hiei’s hard voice called out. It sounded scared almost worried.
Miki snapped his gaze up but too late he was grabbed from behind by Imakô the wolf demon. “Uhh…” Miki was
stunned and did not know what to do.
Hiei flashed over and pulled his sword slashing at Imakô.
Imakô had barely dodged having his left abdominal muscle slashed. The demon roared loudly and created a large
smoke barrier that caused Hiei to break down in a choking fit.
When the smoke cleared away Hiei struck a fighting stance and looked around with glaring eyes only to see that Imakô
had disappeared having taken Miki away with him. Hiei growled deeply and flashed directly to the labyrinth dungeon. “Miki…”

Miki woke up laying in a virtually empty room “Uhhn…” he sat up and blinked a couple of times.
“Are you okay?” came a voice from the corner of the room. It was such a timid mousy voice that Miki
almost shrugged it off.
“Uh…I guess so…” Miki stood and looked around. “Where are you?”
The owner of the mousy voice began to move from their corner and Miki turned to meet a pair of big brown eyes.
“I was hiding over here…I don’t want to go into the maze…”
Miki smiled, “so this would be the center of the maze?”
The little girl nodded.
“Don’t worry, once my friend gets here everyone will be saved.” Miki said, and moved close to the little girl
reaching out to pat her head.
The girl flinched and ran back into the dark corner. “Don’t touch me!” she cried.
Miki blinked, “I’m
not going to hurt you.”
The girl began to cry.
Miki sighed and went over to the straw mat in the corner where he woke up and sat down. As soon as his back met
the stone wall his stomach growled. “Uh…” he blushed a bit embarrassed. “Damn…I wish I’d have eaten before I came
here.” He thought and sighed again.
The little girl sniffed and wiped her nose and tears with her bare arm. She looked at Miki as he shifted uncomfortably.
“You’re not human…your like that creature that brought me here aren’t you.”
Miki’s eyes went wide he knew small children were sensitive but this was insane. Maybe the demon world was having
an affect on the child that heightened her sensitivity. “I’m not like that creature…” he began,
“I was…once human actually.”
The little girl stood up and went over to Miki and sat in front of him. “A night walker?”
“A what?”
The little girl smiled “A human that’s not human anymore.”
Miki nodded. “Yeah…” his stomach growled again.
“Hungry?” The little girl asked.
Miki shook his head “I’ll be fine…”
“What do you eat?”
Miki’s eyes went wide he was shocked that a little girl would ask such a thing. “You ask a lot of questions.”
“Sorry…”
The worst thing that Miki could do in this situation is scare the poor girl. So he endured his rumbling
stomach to protect her.
A couple hours passed and Miki’s stomach growled again. “What’s your name?” he asked.
“Jina Gerhard!” the little girl answered with a smile.
Miki was holding his stomach the hunger pains were getting to be too much. He began to shake all over and he
attempted to hold himself.
“You should eat.” Jina said “What do you eat I’ll try to get some?”
Miki shook his head. “No…I’m fine.”
“But you’re hurting!” Jina stood up and tears welled in her eyes. “You have to eat something!”
Miki smiled “If I told you what I eat you would hide in that corner till my allies came and saved you.”
“Tell me!” she demanded.
“No…”
“Tell me!” she used her full voice now.
Miki was unfazed “No!” he replied.
“TELL MEEEE!” Jina screamed.
Miki’s eyes went wide and he was stunned at the contrast at the once mousy scared Jina and the now demanding
worried Jina. He laughed, “Fine…”
“TE-…huh?” she was suprised she thought Miki was going to be stubborn, well he was but…
“I drink blood…I’m a vampire.” He said and lay down on his side on the straw mat; he couldn’t hold back
the painful tremors that wracked his body.
“Is that all?” Jina said and blinked. She sat in front of Miki and smiled. “If your friends are going to save
us you need help as much as me!” she said logically.
Looking up at the little girl Miki became worried. “I don’t know if I can drink from a child without killing it.”
“Oh?”
Miki rolled over to face the wall. “I only drink from grown ups who have strong hearts…I don’t like to kill
when I drink.”
Jina smiled and placed a hand on Miki’s shoulder. “If I do die…I don’t mind. I don’t have a family to cry
for me anyway.”
Miki’s chest tightened and he sat up, there was no way he could drink from the little girl now, she had something
in common with him. “My mother was killed by the Vamp who turned me…she was all I had.”
“Oh…” a sad look came over Jina’s face. “Still you have friends…”
Miki sighed and hugged the little girl. “Are you sure?” something in him broke when he heard the words of
loneliness pour from Jina’s mouth.
“Uh huh…” she nodded hearing Miki’s stomach growl again. She hugged Miki around the neck and closed her eyes
as she tilted her head.
Brushing the girl’s hair away from her neck Miki made sure to be as gentile as he could. “Thank you.” He
whispered before he licked her neck looking for the pulse. Her pulse was strong, and very healthy. He loosed his fangs and bit
down into the vein to drink deeply.
Jina buried her face into Miki’s neck and closed her eyes.
Miki could feel the little girl becoming heavier from weakness. He released his fangs from the girl’s neck and
he licked the wound clean. He held her close not knowing if she was alive or dead.

Hiei had the hardest time navigating the labyrinth (even with his Jagan eye), but now he was in the center. He had
killed Imakô with little injury on his part, and he was now opening all the doors to the individual rooms that lead to the
outer maze. “Where is he?” he asked himself and growled as all of the humans began to gather in the center of
the large room.
“It’s the last door!” one man shouted.
“Finally we’ll all be saved!” two women cried out and hugged each other.
Hiei growled and grabbed the final door. “Please be in here…” he opened the door and what he saw stunned
him. “Miki…”
Miki was sitting in a corner of the room with a child in his arms, and blood on his chin. “Uh…” he looked up
at Hiei and blinked. “Hiei!” he got up not letting go of the little girl and crashed into Hiei’s chest. “Hiei…I…” he
muttered and began to cry.
All of the humans in the room began to whisper under their breath.
Hiei hugged Miki and sighed. “Whatever happened…it’s…” he began trying hard to comfort the boy “…going to be ok.”
Miki looked up at Hiei with sad eyes. “I…I killed her…” he confessed “I didn’t want to…but I…” he began to sob
uncontrollably holding the limp form of the child tight in his arms.

“You were hungry.” Koenma said as he stamped a paper and placed it aside.
Miki nodded.
“The child offered herself without guilt, and without once thinking about the consequences.”
Miki looked at the floor and tears rolled down his cheeks. “I kept telling her I’d be fine…but she saw my pain.
I told her that I only drank from grown men with strong hearts, that if I fed on a child I didn’t know what would
happen…and she didn’t back down.” Miki began to cry.
Koenma stamped another paper and placed it to the side. “You’ll definitely pass the tribunal.”
“R-Really…?” Miki stammered.
Koenma nodded, “Dozens of Vamps have come through the tribunal and not one has shown emotion. But you…”
“…have been charged with ‘Willful execution of a human life before their time’” Lord Enma said from his podium.
The tribunal was under way and Miki was sitting in the center of the room staring at the floor scared out of his
mind. The god to his front was Enma lord of death, the god behind him and to the left was Inari god of the earth and
fertile soil, and the god behind him and to his right was a visiting god from the west Aries the god of fire and
war.
Inari flipped through the leaflet report that was handed out before the session and spoke up. “It says here that
you were hungry and the child in the labyrinth with you kept asking you what you ate.”
Miki nodded.
“Answer him!” Enma boomed.
Miki shuddered and began to speak. “I was ambushed and when I woke up in the cell of the maze…I was hungry.”
Aries laughed “…and you didn’t want to bite her at first?”
“No…” Miki shook his head.
Enma laughed as well. “Look at me boy…”
Miki looked up at the massive god, His icy blue eyes pouring with tears.
“…And tell me what happened when you killed her.”
Miki broke down “I didn’t want to…but she just…” he began to sob uncontrollably.
Inari sighed and stepped down from his podium. He patted Miki’s shoulder and smiled lightly. “Be strong…for
her. It said in the report that the child had no regrets.”
“She didn’t…and that’s what makes me feel so bad.” He began.
“She had no family…no friends…She-she was so much like I used to be.”
Enma growled, “You may not have had friends but you had a mother.”
Miki shook his head. “I had her but her work made it like she was never there…and now.”
Inari smiled and went
back to his podium. “I have my verdict.”
“Me too…” Aries huffed.
Enma struck his podium “What hear you? All who think guilty say aye!” he growled.
There was no answer.
“Hm…and I’m only doing this for posterity so…all opposed?” Inari asked.
All of a sudden Inari and his harem, Aries and his warriors, and Enma and his ferry girls all shouted “NAY!”
Miki was stunned.
