A/N: I'm sorry, I know it's been a while and I know this chapter is pretty short compared to the others but I've been struggling with it for some reason. I decided a short chapter is better than no chapter though so I'm posting it now. Hopefully I can get through this minor block i have on this story. I know where I want to get but getting there is harder than it really should be.
Kurama smiled some as he worked on the temple garden. He knew that Hiei was monitoring him from where he was supposedly napping on the windowsill and if the Fox even dared feed a speck of ki into the plants he’d have angry fire demon telling him to knock it off. It had been almost two months since Kurama woke up and he’d only been able to leave the building without Hiei breathing down his neck for the past week. Kurama was in no hurry to get that right revoked.
Kurama’s smile grew as he glanced up to where his lover was resting nearby. Hiei had always been rather protective of him once they’d finally given in to their feelings and gotten together and Kurama had expected that protectiveness to skyrocket after Karasu kidnapped him, but he hadn’t quite expected the level of protectiveness he’d gotten. Kurama knew it was because despite how much Hiei doubted the father of Kurama’s kits, the fire demon didn’t particularly want any harm to come to them or his precious fox. It was really quite cute, not that Kurama would dare say that to Hiei. The poor man would have a conniption if he was called cute in any sense of the word. The redhead’s hand drifted down to his belly and he closed his eyes. The twins were constantly getting stronger and to a better weight and Kurama knew he had Hiei to thank for a majority of that. He’d woken up several times in the middle of the night to Hiei giving the twins some of his own ki. Plus he was practically stuffing food down the fox’s throat whenever there was a chance. Kurama shook his head some and returned to his gardening. Though working in the garden without using his powers was mildly frustrating and much slower, he was too glad he was finally being allowed to even come outside to complain. Putting the last of the ripe vegetables into the basket beside him Kurama struggled for a moment to get up. He was still a bit unsteady on his feet from the injuries he’d sustained and the added weight on his front threw his balance off even more. But he managed not to fall and made his way back inside to where Yukina was starting dinner. “Here you are, Yukina,” the redhead said as he put the basket down on the counter. “Oh! Thank you, Kurama, these will be wonderful with the stew,” the little ice maiden said as she peered into the basket and started picking out certain ones to wash off. “I’m glad to be of help, Yukina. Even if it’s not much…” Kurama murmured glancing over at Hiei who hadn’t moved but that was paying attention anyway. “Hn, you should be resting, Fox,” Hiei grumbled. The fox laughed a bit at that. “Hiei if I rest any more I’ll get bedsores,” he stated. “Besides, I’m not using and ki or doing anything strenuous.” Hiei grunted again but let things go at that for which Kurama was glad. He’d rather not get in a fight with Hiei, even a mild one. He never particularly liked to in the best of times but he’d especially not like it now. Hiei was being very sweet and patient about the entire pregnancy and Kurama was always loathed to upset his mate when he was behaving like he was. After letting Kurama help Yukina in the kitchen for about an hour, Hiei declared his fox was done and practically dragged the redhead over to the couch to force him to rest. Hiei had been watching the redhead carefully and the moment he spotted the slight shift in Kurama’s posture to indicate he was tiring he’d acted. It was his job to protect his mate and it was a job he took very seriously. Kurama laughed a bit at Hiei’s protectiveness and admonished that the fire demon was being rude but since he’d been getting tired anyway, relented and curled up with Hiei on the couch. “Thank you for letting me get up at all, Firefly. I know you’d rather tied me down to make sure I couldn’t get hurt,” he teased lightly as Hiei wrapped an arm around Kurama’s waist. “Hn, you’d have done nothing but complain if I hadn’t,” Hiei grumbled as he closed his eyes and pretended to go to sleep. He’d found it was easier to avoid social situations in general when it looked like he was asleep, especially here in the Ningenkai. Besides, it wasn’t as if Hiei really needed his eyes open to know where everyone was in the temple and even the surrounding grounds. Despite Hiei having his eyes closed, Kurama pouted some. “Oh, I think you’d have kept me from complaining somehow, Hiei,” he said. The redhead was highly amused by the faint tinge of pink his lover’s cheeks took on at that but Hiei refused to rise to the bait. “Perverted youko,” Hiei grumbled without opening his eyes. Kurama chuckled a bit and moved to rest his head against Hiei’s shoulder. They laid cuddled together for a while until Yukina announced dinner was done and then the pair moved to the table to eat. Kurama had to try hard to contain his amusement as Hiei kept his bowl from ever being empty. “You know… stomachs do, in fact, have a limit to how much they can hold, Hiei,” he said. “You’re too thin, Fox,” Hiei replied gruffly. “Stuffing me like a turkey is hardly the answer to that, Firefly,” Kurama said, his amusement showing in his voice. Never one to miss out on a chance to tease someone, Yusuke grinned like a mad man. “Yeah, Hiei, you’ve given him like… five bowls already,” Yusuke commented with a laugh. Hiei gave the detective a glare and Yusuke laughed again, not in the least bit intimidated. “He’ll explode like Byakko if you keep it up.” Hiei practically growled and glared daggers at Yusuke. “Don’t you have your own mate to take care of?” His voice came out a near hiss but Yusuke only smirked and leaned back to prop himself up on his hands. “Keiko’s at her mom’s for dinner. But thanks for asking. I’ll let her know you were concerned about her,” he said conversationally as he rubbed the end of his nose with one finger It took some effort on Hiei’s part not to reach for his katana but he managed and only grumbled some insults at his supposed friend before flitting away to escape Yusuke’s teasing. Kurama sighed a little but knew Hiei wouldn’t have gone far. He hadn’t so much as left the sight of the temple in months after all. He wouldn’t be all that inclined to start now. “Why are you here and not with Keiko, Yusuke?” Kurama asked as he pushed his still full bowl to the side. He was far too full as it was. Yusuke shrugged some. “It’s been a while since Keiko could be with her mom and be all girly and crap. So I decided to let them have their time and come check on you,” he answered. Kurama sighed and rested his chin on his palm. “You know despite popular belief recently I can take care of myself. I’ve managed it for centuries after all.” “Yeah, yeah,” Yusuke said, waving the comment away casually. “You’re a tough guy, Kurama but that doesn’t mean we can’t still help you out does it?” “Well, since you seem dead set on doing it no matter if what I say, I suppose it doesn’t,” the redhead answered with a smirk. “Though I am somewhat glad you’re here. I have a favor to ask of you.” “Name it,” Yusuke said instantly, looking slightly more interested now. Kurama smiled a little. “Well, I can’t very well ask Hiei to go to town and get supplies for the twins so I was wondering if you and Keiko could do it,” he said. Yusuke instantly looked a little less enthused at the favor that Kurama needed done. Shopping had never been his forte. “Oh, yeah, I guess… more Keiko’s department than mine though…” “You could always drag Kuwabara along so you don’t get too bored,” Kurama pointed out, knowing it would probably happen no matter what he said. There was no way Yusuke would endure a shopping trip without at least spreading the misery of it around a bit. Yusuke brightened some at that and grinned. “Oh, don’t worry, Kurama. He’ll be going with us if I have to tie him up and stuff him in the cart.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
