Chapter Five
He sat quietly before you, in an almost unnerving tranquility. You were used to men whose egos made them stand out or the ones with such natural grace that the blended in. There were even the ones that had both - like Shuuichi before you. There was something else to him too. It was a wall that laid right under the skin for anyone with eyes to see. A wall that, to do your job, you would need to find a way to climb. Or at the very least become a part of. If you became a part of his wall you became a part of his daily life and that was the ultimate goal.Smiling politely you let the silence pull on for a moment. Sometimes after people left it was just rude to instantly start up a conversation. Even in such a place of business. Besides it let your clients set their own pace.“Hanna is your last name?”Your head tilted ever so slightly to the side as you tried to think about where he would have gotten that impression from. Words replayed in your head until it finally came to you. Ichida had called you ‘Miss Hanna’ while he referred to Shuuichi as ‘Mister Minamino’.“No, no. My first name is Hanna. Ichida and I have just known each other for a while. Last names just faded away over time. The whole Miss thing is a business nicety.”Shuuchi nodded in a reflexive sort of way. You took that as the cue that you needed to continue this meeting so that Shuuchi would have the details.“Alright. So as you know, regardless of whatever relationship builds up, this is still supposed to be a business,” you started off, the awkwardness of the situation only passing your mind like a fleeting thought.“I am aware.”“I am extremely glad that you’re fluent in English, by the way. This is always harder when language barriers come into play.”Shuuchi’s smile just touched his eyes, though it was still polite. There was a kindness to it that softened his features. Something that you appreciated. Somehow breaking the tranquility gave him a more suitable look too. With that contemplative stare he looked like a doll - feminine even. It would have been easy to see how people could have mistaken him as a physically androgynous female actually. Especially with the length and color of his hair in a society that seemed highly formal and ritualized the distinction between male and female - at least that’s how it was to your outside perspective.“Just as you have work, so do I. Although my work isn’t quite as regular as yours it’s scheduled to roughly match up. That way you never have to worry about interrupting anything important,” you continued on.“And what sort of work do you do, Hanna?”“Pretty much everything. Somedays I’m a secretary doing all the typing and paperwork that’s needed. Other times, I baby sit children. Mostly though I’m doing independant studying.”Telling him all of that was easy. There wasn’t anything specific that he could latch on to that would be of detriment to anyone else. Besides it let the conversation start to open up. You knew about his work from all the papers you’d read on the plane ride over so it was only fair.Shuuichi shifted in his seat as he leaned forward on the table, his hands folded into one another and his elbows supporting the weight of his upper body with practiced ease. If he wasn’t some sort of dancer or something you’d have been very surprised. There was a deep fluidity to his movements that you hadn’t really seen before. Like a snake. Just like a snake you wouldn’t be surprised if he was dangerous. Maybe not in the physical sense of course but there was something in the wall you’d seen that could be dangerous. Manipulative maybe? Whatever it was he was analysing you just as quickly and accurately if not more so than you were analysing you. That was probably what was so dangerous about him.“And what do you study?”“Pretty much everything,” you repeated ironically and smiled to lighten the mood. “Arts mostly. Not painting, though I do know a bit about what defines the different styles its nothing more than you could find on wikipedia.”“So then what arts are you referring to?”Alright. He’d set you up in a good position to judge his reactions.“Pleasure,” you smiled teasingly. The look on his face changed, but only as much as he wanted it to no doubt. A sense a surprise rose up with his eyebrows as he leaned back ever so slightly. Though there wasn’t that instant jump in cultural linguistic ties that you may have expected. Especially considering that he was the one who had specifically asked you refrain from sexual affairs while under a contract to him.“I enjoy learning to cook. I like to learn how to make delicious things without all the fuss of industrial kitchens. And recently I’ve taken up wine tasting. Mostly though I just learn whatever suits me. As long as I continue my education, even if it’s not formal, life doesn’t feel so stagnant. I want to continue to be better than I was at a pace in which I enjoy.”“I see.”“I’m also very good at massages by now. I better be with how long I’ve worked at it. There are a lot of things I dabble in. Everything that I want to go learn, I do. I don’t believe that people should limit their experiences because of some contrived notion of ‘knowing too much’ and seeming to be ‘trying too hard’ to others.”Shuuichi’s smile was a bit more genuine now and that helped you relax. It was good to know that you could at least find one thing that the two of you could share. Learning seemed to be a good point. If you remembered correctly he apparently attended a prestigious junior high and high school, graduating with the highest marks his school had ever gotten. That was quite the feet. Formal education had never really suited you. Luckily your job allowed you to experience more informal learning than anything.“That makes you quite the intimidating woman.”You leaned back in your chair and stared at him for a moment. Letting the silence spread over as you tried to get a read on him. He looked open, he really did. But there was something in your gut that kept holding you back and telling you that everything you were seeing was because he wanted you to. That there was a reason this man, who had everything he needed in life otherwise, had few peer relations. People didn’t seek out things to fill voids unless they or others close to them had created a void in their life.“You’re not intimidated?”That didn’t have to be a question. It was merely a statement or observation on your half. You had just phrased it as a statement to try and continue the conversation. “No. I’m not and I’m sure you know that.”A sheepish smile took place on your face. He’d caught you on that one and the both of you knew it. Oh well. Not like it was anything malicious. You just wanted to keep the conversation going.“Is there any other articles of business that need to be addressed?”You shook your head. Everything else had already been stated. Besides it wasn’t as though there were any planned events that you were supposed to attend with him. It was pretty much just you flying blind trying to forge a friendship to help him feel more fulfilled in life for an unknown amount of time. In that sense, Shuuichi was very much your first. Or he would be if he made it past the first month.Your eyes watched him curiously as he stood up, easily buttoning his suit jacket back up as he did so. The movements were still very smooth. Very viper like. His hand reached out to you as a smile softened his features once more.“Well then, how do you feel about having lunch?”A smile that had never really left your features was part of the response you gave him. Your hand fit in his though you didn’t put any weight on it when you moved to stand up. It was merely a polite gesture on his part, a remnant of a time when woman may have needed the extra balance to stand up because of the constraints of their dress. Though as he slowly released your hand and the two of you started out of the room, you had a moment when you remembered that he hadn’t grown up in a culture that had such a gesture. It wasn’t like he was closed off growing up, you would never assume such cultural isolation when technology and trade were so abundant. But it had been done with such lack of thought that even you had forgotten for a moment that this was a total cliche of east and west. It seemed as though Shuuichi was more cultured than you had first thought. Considering that you placed him on a level of excellence in your head it was starting to get a little scary. Or maybe it was just excitement - it had been a long time since someone else had been able to guide the social reigns out of your hands. It’d be fun to see if he could take over.“Are you trying to impress me, Shuuichi?” You asked in a good natured voice.“Do you want to be impressed?” He spoke back to you smoothly, never missing the beat as he held the last door open for you.At some point you were going to have to see how far his “gentlemanly” ways extended. You had found that they usually went hand in hand with a sort of bigotten sexism that hadn’t been meant to be derogatory. The kind that seemed picturesque from the outside - the whole taking care of the woman, doubting, loving person who made sure that nothing strenuous happened. Always watching out for them because they were the guy. From the inside of that type of relationship though sprouted the soul numbing poisonous assumption that women needed such protection - that they were weaker. That something about being a woman made them both physically and emotionally weaker than those who were not. That was something that you would have to endure for the sake of the contract if he had it...but it was not an attitude you enjoyed. And it was something that you needed to gauge quickly or it could have an effect on the both of you.“I want to know you. Not know how impressive you believe you need to be.”“That is a fair request.”You looked back at him in that small moment that it took him to catch up. “Was it a request?”Shuuichi smiled goodnaturedly and shrugged. That looked natural to you, even if it was a responce that he had allowed to happen it was a natural one all the same.“I am attempting to get to know you. It would seem only fair if you had requested the same. So I took your statement as a request. I apologize if it was meant a demand.”“Something tells me that you don’t take demands very well.”Okay, so that building meant that you had to take a right to get out of the section. Or was it a left? Your eyes darted back and forth as you tried to take in the surroundings but there was a lot to take in. There were so many different styles on the street and you were sure that you weren’t even seeing the half of it. Everything that was so stereotyped in other regions for their image of Japan couldn’t even begin to come close to what you could see. There were stereotypes left and right but then there were the subtle surprises. Or the not so subtle things for you to see. It was, in a way, one of the most complicated places that you had been to yet since it didn’t follow any adherence to what it should be. Just like the man beside you, this area simply was. It existed as it wanted regardless of outside or internalized views.“No, I don’t. But what makes you say that?”You laughed at his innocent interrogate expression. “You’re the one who insisted on helping me unpack. Usually people who insist to help others don’t respond to demands very well.”“Is that your experience?”Oh that nearly caused you to laugh more. He was still fishing for information about your past jobs. Shuuichi was very good. If you hadn’t caught that at the last moment you might have told him yes. Which meant that he’d have gotten information out of you about something you’d told him was behind locked doors. Such a little thief...or at least he was trying to be while still being polite. But a polite thief was still a thief. Never mind him guiding the reigns of this relationship from you. You had a feeling he was just going to steal them out from under your nose. Somehow that sounded like fun.“So where are you leading me for lunch?”“If you don’t mind taking public transportation, I was hoping we could go visit an old friend’s shop. I haven’t seen her in a while and I’m sure that it would be a great introduction to Japanese cuisine for you.”A friend’s shop huh? Well that sounded nice. Hopefully it wasn’t too formal. You were dressed for casual business, nothing too fancy. Even if you had replaced the flats you started out with for the high heels you now wore it might have been considered rude to be underdressed or overdressed. There were some cultures in the world that were highly sensitive about that. Especially when one started to make way in an influential section of the society.“You lead and I will follow.”And just like that you placed your trust in his decision. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
