I just realized how similar Kurama’s and Kurai’s names are... O.O; This wasn’t intentional. I just chose ‘Kurai’ because it means ‘dark’. Okay, enough ranting. Chapter time!
***
When Kurama was finally satisfied at his level of cleanliness, he drew himself out of the steaming bath and pulled the plug, allowing the pinkish water to retreat down the drain. With a soft sigh, he tugged the robe from its hook and shrugged it on, tying it loosely at his waist. His nakedness was hidden for the first time since he’d arrived.
He stepped from the bathroom in a cloud of steam, his wet hair clinging to his bare chest like thick rivulets of blood. As he re-entered the main room, he realized that someone must have been there while he was bathing.
A small table was set up at the foot of the bed, laden with food. Steamed rice, oden, shrimp prepared in various ways...
Kurama’s stomach gave a growl of longing, reminding the kitsune that he hadn’t eaten since the morning of his abduction. Though he was very hungry, he was still loath to eat anything given to him by the inhabitants of the castle.
Instead, he fixed his gaze on the door leading out of the room. He knew it was futile to hope, but he strode toward it nonetheless. As soon as he was close enough to reach out a hand and touch the doorknob, the chain thrummed and retracted, yanking Kurama backward with surprising force.
"Unh!" The kitsune groaned as his back made contact with the thick bedpost. Black spots danced in his vision, but they disappeared rather quickly. The chain gave a final indignant pulse, then fell dormant once more.
Kurama was sitting right beside the meal that had been prepared for him, and the smell of the food didn’t help his resolve any. He was dreadfully hungry, but he fhe food was drugged...
"It isn’t. Eat."
Kurama’s head whipped around, a few droplets falling from his hair onto the floor. "Who’s there?"
A dark shape rose from a chair in the corner, where he had remained unnoticed. "You must learn to recognize your master, fox."
The kitsune stood quickly, realization causing his fists to clench at his sides. "Kurai..."
The prince’s eyes narrowed slightly, then a small cut appeared on Kurama’s cheek, just deep enough to cause a soft cry of pain.
"You will address me as ‘Prince’ or ‘Master’ at all times, you ingrate." Kurai murmured, stepping from the shadows.
Kurama raised a hand to his cheek, felt the blood there, and scowled. "You would kill me before I would bow down to you."
Kurai chuckled. "I would think that your life meant more to you than that, my fox."
Kurama ignored the possessive, stepping away from the advancing prince.
"Eat," Kurai demanded once more, gesturing at the food.
"You say that it is not poisoned. Eat it yourself, if you are so positive. Make me trust your word."
Kurai uttered a short laugh. "You mock me? No matter. My words are true." He picked up a piece of shrimp, studied it, then popped it into his mouth. He chewed elegantly, grinning at Kurama the whole time. "Well?"
"Perhaps your body resists the poison."
Kurai’s grin faded. "Why would I try to hurt what is my own?" He moved forward quickly, until he was pressed against Kurama’s body. One of his hands stroked Kurama’s hair softly. "Calm yourself," he whispered. "Eat..."
Kurama’s eyelids fluttered closed. He was vaguely aware that Kurai was still speaking, but the words became unintelligible...
*Flashback*
Kurama and Hiei watched the teen stuff his face enthusiastically. "This is great stuff, Kurama!"
Hiei leaned back in his chair, diverting his gaze to another part of the kitchen. "There goes my appetite..."
Kurama laughed. "You two... Hiei, eat your food. You would hate for all of my hard work to go to waste, wouldn’t you?"
"Hn."
Yusuke grinned. "I’ll take his, then!" He reached across the table and grabbed the edge of Hiei’s plate.
Hiei’s eyes returned to the table quite swiftly. "What are you doing?"
The teen shrugged. "You said you weren’t hungry."
"Release my food."
"Make me!"
Kurama settled a hand on his forehead in a mock gesture of exasperation. These little spats had become quite normal at mealtimes, but sometimes, it just became rather trying.
The kitsune lifted his chopsticks to his mouth, inwardly commending his culinary skill.
Meanwhile, the two continued to argue.
"Kurama! Didn’t he say that he’d lost his appetite?"
"If I said that I was a nudist, Detective, would you take my clothes?"
"...Yeah..."
Hiei sighed, sank his chopsticks into his plate, and took a mouthful of the stewed beef. "There? Happy?" He swallowed. "Hm. That’s better than I thought it’d be..."
"Oh, no, Hiei! It’s mine now!"
Kurama laughed at their antics, his own plate rapidly emptying. He was just chasing the last piece of meat around the plate with his chopsticks when-
WHAM!
Somehow, Yusuke was lying on his back on the floor, the plate covering his face.
"Now look what you’ve done, stupid human!"
Yusuke pulled the plate off of his face, leaving it dripping with gravy and rice. "I didn’t do anything! It was your fault!"
Kurama sighed at the mess that the two had made, then lifted the morsel to his lips-
*End Flashback*
Kurama paused, the chopsticks halfway to his mouth. "What the..." His stomach was comfortably full, and somehow, he was sitting cross-legged on the floor. Kurai was back in his chair, looking smug. A quick glance at the nearly empty table told the kitsune all that he needed to know.
"You manipulated me!" he accused.
Kurai held up his hands in a mock apologetic gesture. "So I did. Would you rather starve to death?"
"You are disgusting," Kurama spat, casting his plate to the floor and standing. The ceramic shattered, but Kurai didn’t flinch.
"And you are beautiful," the prince responded, slowly trailing the tip of his tongue over his lower lip.
Kurama sank back down to the floor, then cradled his face in his palms. "Why are you doing this?"
"Why?" The prince rose once more, smiling wickedly. He knelt before Kurama, his navy hair brushing the floor. "Well-"
At that moment, a short humanoid demon burst through the door, panting. "Prince Kurai!"
Kurai’s purple eyes glinted dangerously at the interruption. "What is it?"
"Intruders! They have entered through the dungeons!"
"Impossible! No one has ever breached my walls!" His features suddenly hardened. "Send my strongest. Stop them before they advance any further."
The demon scrambled from the room, crying his message down the hallway. Kurama stared after him, transfixed. ‘Yusuke? Hiei? Could it be-’
"Even if it is," Kurai mused, "They will not reach this place." With a fluid movement, he pinned Kurama’s arms to his side and drew him into a deep kiss. His tongue invaded the mouth of the wide-eyed kitsune, then retreated swiftly. The prince stood. "I will return soon, my pet. We must work out a method of payment for your lodgings."
Kurama just stared after him, absentmindedly touching the healing cut on his face.

Yusuke skidded into the hallway, sliding into a defensive stance as he moved. When he caught sight of Hiei, he just blinked for a moment, confused.
The koorime’s sword was drawn, and he appeared to be fending off something - but whatever it was, the teen couldn’t see it. "What the hell? It’s invisible?"
Hiei turned his sword flat, and there was a scrape of metal as the unseen opponent’s weapon slid down the length of his sword. He brought his blade up swiftly, and there was a crunch of bone and a high-pitched squeal.
As Hiei moved to Yusuke’s side, there was a tremendous thud. Slowly, the air in front of them shimmered, and the shape of a huge demon appeared out of nowhere. There was a deep furrow in its forehead where Hiei’s sword had undoubtedly struck it. A large sword lay to its side.
"Hn." Hiei straightened from his ready position. "This thing might have been invisible, Detective, but it was far from invincible."
Yusuke’s eyes began to pan around the hallway. "So you say. How can I fight something that I can’t see?"
"You’ll learn." With those words, Hiei took off down the hall. After a moment’s hesistation, Yusuke followed.
"Hey, Hiei! You can’t feel any more of those things around, can you?"
Hiei just glanced back, then sped up. He heard the human’s pants as he tried to keep up, but he didn’t slow...
Not even when he saw the wall of demons before him.
"Out of my way!" he snarled, his sword flashing and slicing through the flesh of the beings before him. It wasn’t very long before he realized that something just wasn’t right.
The demons were regenerating.
"Yato," Hiei hissed through clenched teeth, slashing at the demons with renewed fervor. One swung a club in a clumsy forward motion, and Hiei easily disarmed him before sinking his blade into its forehead. The wound was healing before he could remove his sword.
At some point, Yusuke joined the fray, but Hiei’s mind was focussed completely on the battle. ‘He won’t be able to sit still,’ Hiei reasoned. ‘Sooner or later, Yato will tire of seeing his minions cut down, and he will come to see for himself.’
"Unlikely."
The demons froze. Yusuke, undaunted, socked one in the face, his eyes on the majestic figure before him.
The long navy blue hair... the elegant white robes... the aura of superiority... All of these things told Yusuke and Hiei that they were faced with the demon prince.
Well, those things, and the fact that all of their former combatants were prostrate, murmuring, "Prince Kurai."
"Yato will not come," Kurai said, in the same tone as he would have used if he had been saying, "The sky is blue."
Hiei glowered. "You have taken someone that does not belong to you. Return him, and you will not have to suffer a painful death."
Kurai just laughed. "You have come for the kitsune." A statement, not a question. "If you want him, you must reach him. He is five levels above us... though I doubt you will get that far. My sentinels await you at every staircase..."
With a yell, Yusuke darted forward, his fist raised. Hiei drew a sharp breath. Obviously, the boy hadn’t felt what Hiei had... "Yusuke! Stop!"
Kurai merely sighed, and flicked his hand in the boy’s general direction. There was a ‘thud’, as if Yusuke had run into a wall, then the rustle of fabric as he sank to his knees. "Damn it! Ow..."
"You will find my powers to be quite formidable," Kurai chuckled. "And you will need to do much better than that, human, if you wish to defeat me."
Kurai’s white robes began to billow in a wind that came from nowhere and was felt by none of the others in the room. Hiei blinked- and he was gone.
"Detective, are you all right?"
Yusuke staggered to his feet, holding his head. "Yeah. I’m fine. That bastard’s gonna get it, though."
Hiei smirked. "The faster we get there, the swifter his demise will be."
Yusuke nodded. As if an unheard communication had passed between them, they began to leap (and run) over the still-prostrate demons. Apparently, the beings were too stupid to do malonalone. Plus, without Yato nearby, thir sir saw no need to stay and fight. If they couldn’t kill the demons’ protector, then the fight would be nothing but a waste of time.
The pair raced down the hall, headed for the first staircase.

"DAMN!" Kurai burst into the room, makKuraKurama gasp minutely before resuming control and schooling his face to nothing short of mockery.
"I assume you found my friends to be too strong for you."
"No," Kurai responded, stepping over to the kitsune. "I have just expended more energy than I expected... it needs replenishing."
"So wh-" Kurama paused. Something that Koenma had said was playing in his mind. "No..."
Kurai placed his hand against Kurama’s chest and grinned. "Yes," he whispered, before pushing just enough energy through his fingertips to numb Kurama’s arms and legs. Lying the distressed fox on the bed, he smirked. "You see, I’ve just thought of the perfect method of payment."
His hands drifted to the knot of Kurama’s robe.
