Somewhere in the wilds of Makai…
Hiei was on his way back to the Ningenkai, under some very strange orders from Mukuro when it happened. The call from Keiko was so clear that he could not help but hear it as he flitted from tree to tree. It seemed that Keiko, as well as Kurama, needed him. He didn't know why, but he was only a half hour from the Ningenkai and so, after picking himself up off the ground, he took off again at top speed. As he ran, he wondered two things. First, what was so urgent, and second, why Mukuro wanted to meet his mates so badly?
Back in Kurama's apartment…
After getting dressed, Keiko and Kurama had just settled onto the couch to wait for Hiei when they heard the phone ring. Kurama gave a quizzical glance at his mate, shrugged then got up to answer it. "Minamino residence, Shuichi speaking."
"Is Keiko Yukimura there? This is her mother." A female voice asked.
"Just a moment." Kurama put a hand over the mouthpiece and turned to Keiko. "It's your mother."
Keiko's eyes widened as she rose from the couch and crossed over to take the phone from Kurama's grasp. Raising the handset to her ear, she said, "M-mom?"
"Hello, dear, I just wanted to call and check on how you were doing. Was the young man who answered the phone one of your new roommates? He sounds nice." Keiko's mother's voice sounded cheery.
Keiko had a moment of tongue-tied awkwardness, but managed to answer, "Oh, yes, he is. That was Shuichi."
"Are you sure you're okay, dear? You still sound like you're shaken up."
"I'm fine, mom... We were, um... just watching that scary movie called The Ring, you know, and then the phone rang and it sort of freaked me out." Keiko assured her, though she knew her alibi was a bit on the lame side.
"Now, dear." Came that tone and Keiko knew she was caught. "I've seen you when you were shaken up like that. Were you crying again?"
Keiko sighed, "Maybe. I think it was just a bit of homesickness. But I'm alright now. Shuichi helped me get over it."
"It sounds like I might have to get to know your roommates after all. I know you said that they were friends, but it sounds like there might be something more going on." Knowing how that sounded she hurriedly added, "I do trust you, honey, it's just I know how this can hurt and I don't want you throwing yourself into a very bad situation just because you got hurt once. Besides, your father has been fretting all morning about you not having clothes."
Keiko blushed, "I'm fine mom, really, I have everything I need here. But if it makes you feel any better, you and dad can stop by tomorrow and bring me some."
Kurama raised his brow at Keiko's blush, hearing what was being said from the other end of the phone as well.
"Well, if you're sure, dear." There was a pause while she was obviously speaking to someone else on the other end of the line.
There was a slight noise on the other end as the phone apparently changed hands as Keiko's father took over. "Are you sure you're okay, honey? I have a suitcase all packed and ready to come over. You can come over next weekend and get the rest of your stuff, if you can get those two guys to help you. We're just worried about you, sweetheart, that's all."
Keiko smiled gently into the receiver. "I know that daddy. I'm sure Shuichi and Hiei will come and help me get my things. Thank you for packing them for me."
"Would you mind if I dropped off at least this one suitcase?" he asked in his 'worried father' voice.
"Of course not, dad, whenever you feel like stopping by. You and mom are always welcome, you know that."
Kurama nodded at her, knowing what would have to be done for appearances. He just hoped things wouldn't get too awkward.
"Very well. Your mother and I shall be over shortly. She's been worried all morning long and you know how she can get."
"I do," Keiko agreed, a bit dismayed that her parents chose NOW to come over, but at the same time feeling guilty about not wanting them to come. She had wanted to have her talk with Hiei and gain his reassurance about the status of their relationships and hoped that he would make it back in time to do so before her parents showed up. "We'll be waiting. Bye, dad."
Kurama watched her mechanically hang up the phone. "Do you not want to see your parents, little flower?" He asked, moving to cupping her cheek tenderly.
Her head tilted slightly into his hand. "Oh, Kurama, I do! I really do... but I wanted to talk to Hiei about this and I'm afraid we won't have time now when he gets here."
"How long do you think they will stay? Hiei will be able to remain beyond your parents visit. I do not know who will arrive first, but remember," He tilted her chin up; "Hiei's your mate, too." He studied her brown eyes that were so beautiful to him.
"I understand." she whispered, "It'll take them at least thirty minutes to get here. For how long they will stay… I can't be certain." she then breathed a sweet sigh as he leaned down to kiss her gently.
Kurama pulled back from her slowly, and then completely released her. "However, if your parents really are on their way, then we have to make the spare bedroom look like it's semi-set up, anyway. Come on, action is the best thing to keep your mind from worrying too much."
Keiko followed him into the spare room and together they began fixing the bed up to look slept in, pulling at the bedding to make it look rumpled. As they did this, a suddenly playful gleam rose in Keiko's eyes. "Oh, Kurama..." she got the kitsune's attention by using a sing-song voice to say his name. "You know... there is an easier way to do this, don't you?" she smiled teasingly.
Kurama responded with a teasing tone of his own, "Yes, there is, however I don't know if it's entirely appropriate at the moment. We don't know when Hiei will get here and while I don't worry about him, I do worry about your parents."
"You're no fun," Keiko pouted prettily.
"I don't recall any protests last night. But then maybe next time I need to do the dishes?"
Keiko's pout melted into a soft smile. "You do that," she said before her face took on a more serious expression. "Okay, enough of this. Let's finish up in here. I still need to get dressed," she glanced over at the youko's attire. "And so do you."
Kurama chuckled. "That we do." he closed his eyes and reverted back to his human form. "I also needed to do that." he gave her a playful pat on her rear, "Now, let's get moving."
Keiko swatted at Kurama playfully in return. Once she was dressed, she retreated to the kitchen in order to prepare breakfast so that she and Kurama could await Hiei's arrival. Kurama came out of the bedroom a few moments later. Stepping up behind Keiko, he wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his chin on her shoulder, giving her neck a loving kiss.
"Mmm, that smells delicious, koi." he said.
Keiko smiled at Kurama. "Thank you, but it's nothing fancy, really."
"Doesn't matter, not after the appetite we managed to work up." Kurama replied. "Now, if your parents should arrive before Hiei does, how should we play this?" he replied, releasing her from his embrace in order to pour himself a cup of coffee and sit down at the kitchen table.
Keiko finished up the bacon and eggs she had been cooking and plucked a couple pieces of toast from the toaster to put on Kurama's plate before setting it in front of the kitsune. "Here you go, Kurama." she turned back to fix her own plate and then soon rejoined him at the table, sitting across from him before she finally answered his question.
"Well, I'm hoping that Hiei will make it back before mom and dad get here. But if he doesn't, then I guess we could just tell them he had a case that he had to go on at the last minute? I don't know." she shrugged, shooting him a helpless look.
Kurama thought for a moment, and then replied, "Considering your cover story for Hiei that would work well." He took a thoughtful bite of his breakfast, considering schedules. "So," he started again after swallowing, "What is your schedule like? Hiei's is hardly set. My own is relatively consistent, taking into account the different classes that take place on different days. You're still in high school with three months left, right?"
"Right," Keiko nodded.
"So, what time does your school start and what time do you get up." Kurama smiled at the surprised look. "I don't know everything, contrary to popular belief. I need to work out some schedules so that we don't all end up doing the same chore, or all of us trying to take a shower at the same time." he smiled at her in a rather wolfish way, "Not that we'd really object, you understand, but then you and I would definitely be late for school."
Keiko blushed. "Well, school normally takes in around 8, so I'm usually up and getting ready around 7 or so." she finally replied after she'd managed to push thoughts of a wet and naked kitsune and fire apparition from her mind. 'Oh, bad Keiko!' she silently reprimanded herself.
Kurama nodded. "That sounds about right actually. I'm usually up a bit before that, but I don't need as much sleep as you do either. Do your assignments have to be done on the computer, or handwritten?" he looked over at the computer sitting in the corner.
"Depends on which subject it is," Keiko replied. "A couple of my courses require it, but not all. I'm not very good with computers anyway."she admitted a little abashed.
"I can help with that, just don't let Hiei touch it." Kurama replied making a face at one of his less favorite memories.
Keiko arched an eyebrow. "Something I need to know?"
"I'll tell you later, when we have an unbroken timeframe and Hiei won't be back for a day or so. I don't want you to get killed by laughing at him." Kurama replied with a hint of a smile.
"Would I do that?" Keiko asked, teasing as she cast an almost innocent look Kurama's way.
Kurama chuckled, "I still have a hard time remembering it with a straight face. I don't want to chance it. I was rather angry at the time, but then I found the humor in the situation. I shall only say that his own youki and the computer do not get along."
"Alright then," Keiko giggled, realizing that was all she would get out of him for now. "I'll wait for the full story." she rose from the table, intending on gathering the dirty dishes in order to clean up when a knock came at the door.
Kurama motioned her to continue with the dishes and went to the door, opening it respectfully. He looked at the couple waiting on his doorstep and knew that Keiko's parents did not belong to the law enforcement. "Excuse me, can I help you?"
The male cop glanced down at a notepad he held in his hand before looking back up at Kurama. "Keiko Yukimura?" he asked in question. Kurama's eye twitched a tad as he was once again mistaken for the opposite gender.
Kurama fought back the snarl, once again cursing his delicate looking frame that everyone kept mistaking for a girl. His answer was a little cooler in tone as he said, "No, I am Shuichi Minamino. Please come in and I will get Keiko." He let the two come into the living room as he went to the entrance to the kitchen. "Keiko?"
Keiko looked over at Kurama, "What's wrong?"
Kurama didn't know an easy way to say this, so he settled for a matter of fact tone, hoping that nothing too serious had happened. "There are two officers asking for you."
Keiko's hand flew to her mouth, instantly assuming the worst; after all it wasn't every day that she had cops asking for her.
Kurama helped her out to the living room and settled her into a chair facing the couch that the two officers had occupied. "This is Keiko Yukimura. Why are you here to see her?" he asked for her, seeing that she was still getting herself under control. There really had been too many emotions flying around lately.
The female officer, a petite blonde with striking blue eyes, shared a brief look with her partner, one that Kurama knew immediately meant that whatever it was the officers needed to tell Keiko, it wasn't good. The woman turned her attention back to Keiko who was now looking expectantly, albeit uncertainly, at the two police officials. Reaching out she gently squeezed Keiko's shoulder in a gesture of comfort as she spoke.
"I'm sorry to be the one to inform you of this, but there's been an accident involving your parents. I'm afraid they've both been taken to the hospital."
Keiko choked back a sob and clutched at the nearest support she could find, in this case, Kurama's hand as she squeezed it. She whispered in a voice that was barely audiable. "How are they? Which hospital? What happened?"
Kurama could feel her emotions battering him and knew that Hiei could feel it too, wherever he was and sat down on the arm of the chair. "Easy, Keiko. One question at a time." He put one arm around her shoulders.
Hiei felt the wave of anguish from Keiko easily now that he was back in the Ningenkai and wondered what had happened. This felt, wrong, was the only response that he could put to it. He also felt Kurama trying to help their mate through whatever it was, but she needed both of them. He took off at double time now and swiftly went to Kurama's balcony. He could see Keiko in there, with Kurama right next to her, as he should be. He also saw two unfamiliar ningens who seemed to be causing the distress.
Putting forth a herculean effort, he pushed aside his rage and swiftly moved over to the window in the bedroom, so that it looked like he was just getting out of bed, not unheard of, as it was only 8:30 in the morning. He immediately went over to Keiko and Kurama, asking, "What's wrong?"
"Hiei!" Keiko's strangled cry was muffled when she launched herself at the fire demon, wrapping her arms around his waist as she buried her face in the front of his cloak.
Hiei gave a very startled look at Kurama, even as his arms came tenderly around his mate. "What happened?"
Kurama looked at the two of them, fully conscious of the two officers sitting there, taking in the tableau. He had to consciously hold himself back from embracing the two of them due to ningen sensibilities. "Keiko's parent's got into an accident on their way over here." he informed Hiei in a very soft voice, barely heard over their sobbing mate.
"Keiko," Hiei breathed. He fixed the two officers with a rather coldish stare. "You know where they are." It was not a question.
"Yes," It was the male officer who responded. "They were taken from the scene to Tokyo General by ambulance about twenty minutes ago. They should have already arrived."
Kurama stepped in at this point, "Would it be possible for you to take us there as we own no car between us?" Seeing the expressions on the faces of the officers, he added, "We would not think of leaving our friend to suffer through this alone."
Hiei sent, 'Well said, fox. I could not have remained calm at the moment.'
'I know, Hiei, that's why I did.' He waited for the officers to make a decision.
"Certainly, it's the least we could do. We're very sorry for being the bearers of bad news, ma'am." The man replied, giving Keiko a look of sympathy that mirrored the one in his partner's eyes.
Hiei gave them a grateful nod while still holding his trembling mate.
Kurama looked at them, "I'll grab Keiko's jacket and give my mother a quick call. I think Keiko could use a mother's touch."
"Th-thanks." Keiko got out. "I need to wash my face before I leave." She stumbled off into the direction of the bathroom while Kurama went to the phone.
Hiei got Keiko's jacket as it was still a little cool outside and caught the tail end of Kurama's phone conversation.
"Thank you, Mother. I think you'll be a tremendous help." Kurama hung up the phone. "My mother will meet us at Tokyo General as soon as she can."
"Hn." Hiei replied.
They settled back to wait for Keiko to compose herself a little in the bathroom. After a few moments, she did emerge, and although her eyes were still a bit puffy, the tears were gone. "Okay…. I'm ready."
The officers looked at her in new respect as she still looked pale, but composed.
Hiei stayed close behind her and Kurama slightly in front of her, trying to protect her as best they could, even if there wasn't a threat.
Kurama said in his soft voice, "After you officers."
Keiko gave a weak smile at the protective stances of her two mates, wanting desperately to hug them both, but not sure what the officers would think of that.
The officers walked out first, closely followed by Kurama, Keiko and Hiei, the two of them surreptitiously brushing Keiko's hands, reassuring her that they were both there for her as they walked out the door on their way to the hospital, each wondering what they were going to face there.
