Chapter 6
Once upon a valentine
The February wind was crisp and snow fell in small flakes around Miki as he looked at the elaborate window display
of boxed chocolates and kissing teddy bears all accented with red white and pink streamers. “I’ll never afford something
for him.” Miki thought and sighed deeply. He pulled his scarf over his face and began to walk away.
“Excuse me.” a cheerful voice came from the door to the shop.
“Hm…?” Miki turned and blinked his ice blue eyes at the girl.
She was lovely with long brown hair and cute big brown eyes. “I couldn’t help but notice you were admiring the display.”
The girl was Keiko Yukimora, Yusuke’s fiancée.
“Yeah…” Miki said turning his eyes to the ground. “…I’m very sorry for loitering but…”
“…You have someone you love but you can’t afford anything for them?” she asked, half finishing his sentence.
Miki nodded.
“I have just the thing…” she grabbed Miki’s hand and led him into the shop. “…wait here.” She said leaving
Miki by the counter while she ran to the back.
Miki blinked and loosened his scarf. “I guess…I’ll be getting something for him anyway.” He smiled to himself.
Kurama walked by the card shop and saw the chocolate display. He began to drool “No…” he shook his head and averted
his gaze. “I’ll probably be getting so much from the nurses at work…” he turned again to look back at the beautiful
display, and past all the plush and velvet he saw Miki standing by the counter. “Miki…?” he blinked.
When he saw Keiko come out from the back with a small box he could only think the worst.
“N-No…he’s probably just buying some chocolate for someone he likes.” He thought trying to make the bad thoughts better.
“No charge!” Keiko said as she handed the small unlabeled box to Miki.
“Are you sure?” Miki asked and blushed as he took it.
Keiko stole one of Botan’s moves flipping her hair and winking cutely. “Of course no one’s buying those anyway.”
All Kurama saw was the flirtatious flip of the hair and wink that Keiko gave Miki. That was all it took to make
him run off, his eyes welling with tears.

Miki examined the plain looking red box as he sat in his room. “How will I give it to him?” he asked himself. He
sighed and flopped down on his bed.
“Miki…are you ok?” Yukina called as she knocked on the door.
“Yeah I’m just a little depressed.”
Yukina entered the room. “Oh you poor thing…can I help in any way?” she sat on the edge of Miki’s bed and looked
down at him.
Looking up at Yukina the 17 year old vampire could see a wax paper parcel. Possibly a present for Kazuma Kuwabara,
or Hiei…Yukina always seemed fond of those two. “I got this Valentines present for…well…” he didn’t want to say.
“…anyway…I don’t know how to give it to them.
“Well if you love them…It doesn’t matter.” Yukina said and stood up. “…although…I’m planning to give my
gift when we have time alone.”
Miki smiled, “I guess since I’m not telling you who my gift is for you’re not going to tell me yours?”
“Hm…?” Yukina tilted her head in wonder. “Oh…I thought it was obvious who I was giving my Chocolates to.” She giggled.
“Just a hunch but it’s either Kuwabara or Hiei.” Miki said and smiled.
Yukina smiled. “Right-o I made chocolates for both of them!” she said cheerfully before leaving the room.
Miki sighed and sat up. “I need some fresh air.” He thought and put the small red box into his pocket
before exiting the temple.
Yusuke was standing on the porch looking at the mountain range that marked the edge of the landscape and all that
he owned in the human world. “I’m so lucky to have gotten this place.” he said and sipped his hot chocolate.
Puu happily perched on Yusuke’s head and snuggled into the detectives’ hair.
Miki exited the temple in a rush passing by Yusuke with eyes clouded by confusion.
“Hey Miki!” Yusuke shouted stalling the boy in his tracks.
Miki turned and smiled lucidly “Oh Yusuke-san…hi.”
Puu blinked and flew over to Miki pecking small kisses onto the boy’s cheeks. “Puu puu!” he cooed.
Miki blushed a little, “Uh yeah…happy Valentines Day Puu…” he said and pushed the flying penguin thing away gently.
“…go back to Yusuke-san”
Yusuke laughed “Geez you can scrap the suffix I’m younger than Kurama and you call him by his first name.” he said.
“Oh…ok…” Miki turned his gaze to the ground and covered his face with his scarf.
Yusuke blinked. “…you ok there?”
“I’m fine!” Miki countered and smiled putting up his ‘I’m fine and I don’t have to tell you anything’ shield.
“He’s so cool…but…” he turned and ran off.
“Weird kid…” Yusuke scratched his head and went back to admiring the landscape. He took a sip of his cocoa and sighed. “Damn it, my hot chocolate went cold!”
“Puu…” Yusuke’s spirit beast sat on the porch railing and deflated somewhat disappointed.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Miki sat in the woods holding the plain little red box in his hands. “How could I give it to him?” he murmured.
“I can’t and that’s a fact.” He said arguing with himself. “But he’s such a…” He began and closed his eyes.
“…cool guy.” He said aloud. “I want to give it to him.” he whispered. “…but he’s engaged…” he
thought deeply “…to a kind and beautiful girl.” He damned himself for even wanting to get Yusuke a Valentines
gift; he knew the guy was straight. He stood up and pitched the small red box into a hot spring. “I always hated
this stupid holiday!” he shouted.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Kurama walked up the steps of the temple with a forlorn look on his face.
“Hey Kurama!” Yusuke shouted. He was in a super good mood despite all of the valentines blues radiating from
every other person.
The red head blinked and walked over to the porch. “Yusuke…haven’t seen you in a while.”
“Yeah well…I’ve had business in the Makkai.” He said and shrugged before sipping his now cold chocolate.
Kurama nodded “I hear you…work is tough.”
“Heh…” Yusuke smirked at Kurama “But I bet your work is made all the more easier with all those sexy nurses and
interns walking around.” he said, his smirk quickly turned into a wide grin.
Kurama glared at Yusuke “What the heck are you drinking?” he asked and followed up with a “You know full well
that I’m dating Hiei.”
“Yeah, yeah…” Yusuke waved off the last comment. “…its hot chocolate…want some?” he held the mug out towards Kurama.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
“Hm…” Hiei grunted as he watched everyone with their own problems. “Baka ningen holidays.” He cursed. He
leapt from tree to tree until something caught his eye. “…”
It was a spot of red among all the contrasts of green and white
in the forest. Miki’s gift was floating in the middle of the hot spring.
Hiei flashed over to the edge of the spring and used his sword to knock the small box to shore. Upon picking it
up he became enamored with the simplicity and smiled a little. “Hm…” he looked around before taking off once more only
to perch in his tree as he made an attempt at opening the wooden box.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Miki lay in the snow and cried. “Fuck…now I’ll never be able to give it to him…or anyone.” He said grabbing
a fistful of snow and scrubbing his face with it. “GAH!” he screamed “I hate this damn holiday!” he rolled around
all wet and cold in the snow. “Every year it’s the same thing, nothing but pain.”
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Hiei blinked and twisted one part of the box and its shape changed. “A puzzle…?” he murmured. He continued
looking for little seams he could twist and manipulate and soon he found another…and another. And soon the box was now a
three dimensional heart. He blinked and noticed another seam and twisted accordingly only to see that
now the box was open. “Ah…”
The item on the inside was undamaged from all the twisting and solving of the puzzle. In fact the item was simple,
nothing more than a gold locket.
Hiei sighed and put on the small necklace. “I’m keeping the puzzle box.” He decided and leapt down from his tree.
Miki had long fallen asleep which was not a good thing at all even in his vamp form. His breaths were labored as the
cold was settling into his lungs.
“Hm…” Hiei stood over Miki and blinked. “Even vampires aren’t immortal.” He said bluntly and lifted the boy up bridal style.
“Mmm…stupid holiday.” Miki murmured.
Hiei smirked. “You and I both.” He said softly as he carried Miki into his room and stripped him of his wet clothes.
Miki curled up as soon as he felt warm sheets against his skin. “…mmm…” he purred.
“Hm…” Hiei placed the puzzle box on the nightstand and stripped himself before laying in bed with the boy, holding
him close to warm him. Slowly pulling a sheet over them both Hiei sighed.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Miki woke up the next morning and yawned wide. “Huh?” he looked around and saw Hiei curled up at the edge of the
bed. Eyes going wide Miki could only wonder what had happened last night. Upon looking around again Miki saw
the small red box on the nightstand. “H-huh?” he stammered.
Hiei rolled over and a low purr came from him. A flash of gold sparkled around his neck.
Miki stayed silent and moved
close. “Hiei doesn’t wear gold…” he thought and blinked.
Unexpectedly Hiei’s eyes snapped open. “I can’t sleep when you’re staring at Me.” he murmured.
“WAH!?” surprised by the sudden complaint Miki fell backwards off of the bed.
Even half asleep Hiei
is fast, for he disappeared and reappeared to catch Miki before he hit the tatami mat floor. “Hm…”
“Uh…” Miki was tongue tied and he blushed. He was naked lying in the arms of another very naked Hiei.
“What…?” the Koorime growled.
The only thing that passed Miki’s lips was the most stupid thing in the world. “Did you fish my valentines’ gift
out of the spring?” he blushed even redder after saying it.
Hiei smirked and just helped Miki back up onto the bed.
After which he sat down and touched the locket around his neck. “Hm…it’s nice.” He smirked.
Miki blinked. “That locket was in the box?” he thought very surprised but then he remembered his true intentions.
“Th-that box wasn’t for you.” He stammered.
Hiei grunted and looked out the window at the snow as if he didn’t care.
“It was for Yusuke-sa…” he paused before he could finish the suffix.
Removing the gold chain it was all Hiei could do not to hit the boy for discarding something like that, and
then… “Here…” he held out the chain in his open palm.
Miki noticed that Hiei’s hand was trembling. “Hiei…”
“Take it…”
Miki just sat there; he didn’t want to do this to the fire demon. He didn’t want to put Hiei through what he
himself went through every single year. He took Hiei’s hand and closed the Koorime’s fingers over the chain. “I don’t want to
take it from you…besides…you’re…” Miki could feel his body shaking and he felt dizzy. The only
thought that crossed his mind as
he blacked out was “As long as Hiei has a happy valentines day…”
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Hiei waited for a good 15 minutes before getting dressed and leaving the room. He still held the locket in his
hand. “If he wants Yusuke he’ll have Yusuke.” He thought and he felt slightly sick. He stepped into the living room where
the raven haired young man was drinking his coffee. “Hm…” he grunted and glared at him.
Yusuke blinked, “Is there a problem Hiei?” he asked raising an eyebrow.
Puu sat beside Yusuke with a small blanket wrapped around him. The little fellow seemed to be sleeping.
Hiei threw the locket at Yusuke.
Effortlessly catching the locket, Yusuke smirked. “I’m sorry Hiei but you know I’m…”
“It’s from Miki.” Hiei
said before vanishing.
Yusuke’s eyes went wide and he remembered how distant the boy was the day before. “He smiled…didn’t say much…but
he seemed…” he ended his thoughts and set down his coffee. He stood and made his way to Miki’s room “Hey…Miki…” he
said softly not wanting to disturb the boy if he was sleeping. “Weird…” he stepped into the room
seeing Miki nude and unconscious on the bed. “…uh…” Yusuke was stunned and the hand holding the fine chain shook a little.
Miki was paler than usual his lips were white and he trembled when he breathed.
“Is he…?” Yusuke started and took a step closer. He sat on the edge of the bed and looked down at Miki.
“Miki?” he whispered.
The boy whimpered and writhed before his eyes fluttered open. His eyes seemed empty, dim even.
“Miki…” Yusuke cupped the boy’s cheek.
The boy shook Yusuke’s hand away. “You could never love me…” he whimpered.
Yusuke sighed gathering all of his pride. “Idiot…” he said and leaned over Miki pressing a kiss upon the boy’s lips.
Tears fell from Miki’s eyes as he felt Yusuke’s warm kiss. “I’ve wanted this…but…” he thought of the young
woman whom Yusuke was promised to. “STOP!!!” he screamed breaking the kiss and pushing Yusuke away. His tears
flowed like rivers down his pale cheeks. “You could never…” he hissed and curled up in the corner. “You
could never…because you have her…” he began to sob.
Yusuke sighed “Then I guess I should return this.” he said as he stood placing the gold chain on the nightstand.
Miki blinked “The locket…but how?” he remembered how he tried to get it back from Hiei…then changed his mind
wanting the fire demon to be happy. “Did Hiei?” he could only imagine what was going through Hiei’s mind as he thought of
the spiky haired Koorime’s slight smile as he touched the locket. “Hiei…” he murmured.
“Huh?” Yusuke turned and saw Miki standing up only to go to his wardrobe.
The boy dressed simply in a pair of jeans. He grabbed his boots and scarf and the locket before leaving the room silently.
Yusuke was a bit confused, no more so than usual. He went back to the living room and sat down deciding his job
was done. “Man that was tough.” He said as he scrubbed his lips with the side of his hand. “Never again…” he groaned and
lifted his coffee mug.
Puu was now deflated once more; the little blue spirit beast had good connection with Yusuke.
“Hm…? Heh…I guess you can sense I’m kinda tired.” Yusuke reassured himself as he patted Puu on the head.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Hiei was sitting in his tree with his arms folded behind his head. He was pretending to be asleep (very well
I might add) as he thought of the last thing he heard Miki say “I don’t want to take it from you…besides…you’re…” Hiei
sighed as he replayed the moment over and over in his mind. “What am I? He was going to say something
profound…I think.” a vein popped in Hiei’s forehead as he became irritated.
“Hiei…” Miki called from the base of the tree.
The fire demon just sat where he was…silently feigning sleep.
“Hiei…I’m sorry if I…” he began and trailed off before turning away. “I can do this…” he assured himself.
Hiei cracked one of his eyes open and peeked at the ground below but Miki was not there. “Hm…?”
“Up here Hiei…” Miki said hoarsely and loosened his scarf before stepping towards the fire demon. He had good
balance and the tree branch barely sagged when he walked on it. He knelt when he was directly in front of Hiei and looked
at the demon with wide sad eyes. “This belongs to you.” He said and reached out with both hands placing
the thin gold chain around the Koorime’s neck. The small locket hung delicately over Hiei’s scarf.
Eyes going wide Hiei could only imagine. “What am I…?” he asked bluntly.
“Huh?” Miki blinked a bit confused.
“You said something before you passed out that I’m…something.”
Miki smiled “I was going to say…you’re…” he hesitated to swallow his pride and blushed deeply. “…special to me.”
Hiei wrapped his arms around Miki and pulled him into a tight embrace.
“H-Hiei…” Miki murmured as he felt Hiei’s warmth surround him.
“Baka ningen holiday.” Hiei whispered and kissed Miki lightly on the forehead.
Miki blushed and smiled. “I always hated Valentines day too.”
