Chapter Six
The place that Shuuichi lead you to was not one you were expecting. Not only had was it outside of the city in a more suburban area, but it didn’t exactly look like a restaurant. It was a simple rectangular shaped place with two windows on the second floor and one with wooden bars on the first floor facing the street. In fact, everything but the sliding glass door and sign (in Kanji) hanging above it reminded you of a home. Then again there were plenty of commercial places that had once been houses and vice versa.
As Shuuichi walked in, he said something that you didn’t quite catch. There was a response from just out of sight, judging by the fact that it sounded feminine and the only other person in the room was male. So it must have been some type of greeting or so you would assume. You took a second to look around. The place definitely had that home type feel, the kind of place you just grow up with that wasn’t all about big business. There was a handprint ink mark, adult sized, hanging above the doorframe in the rear and books scattered on a small bookshelf beside the door frame as well. To your right there was a bar typed eating area and to the left a few tables meant for two people each. The walkways between such areas were relatively narrow.“My friend Keiko Yukimura’s family own this place.”You nodded as you took your seat to the right of Shuuichi at the bar. The cook turned around around with a smile on his face, greeting Shuuichi by name. That much you could tell. Though when words started to spill out in your direction you had to pull out the only Japanese you knew.“Please excuse me. I do not speak Japanese,” you repeated from memory. That was one of the lines that you’d memorized. It was one of the first things you memorized for any language you encountered. Yes you tried to learn the languages of your clients but that took time. Time that you would hopefully have with Shuuichi but you hadn’t had it yet. Which mean that your language skills for this area were severely lacking. The man, who’d you assume was named Yukimura based on Shuuichi’s earlier introduction of the eatery, nodded with a good natured smile. He didn’t seem at all surprised by that nor did he seem all that put off, thankfully. You gently lowered your eyes to what you would assume was the menu sat between yourself and Shuuichi as the two struck up a casual conversation. The table card like menu was written all in Kanji so it made very little sense to you. But from what you could see based on the grouping there were a few different choices for food. Beside the menu was a small bottle of soy sauce and to the other side a cylinder of wooden chopsticks. Thankfully those you knew how to use - what person grew up without Chinese takeout? You looked up from the bar area when you heard someone come up behind you. The young woman had dark brown hair and had it pulled back into a low hanging ponytail. Her clothes were rather modest and looked to be layered up multiple times in a way that made you feel extremely over dressed. Then again, the man you were accompanying was still in his suit as well so at least there was that. Though, you did unbutton your dark blazer and started to tug it off so it could rest against the back of your chair as she greeted Shuuichi.“Hanna, this is my friend Keiko Yukimura. I’ve known her since Junior High School.”“Nice to meet you,” you said to her with a smile, avoiding the word pleasure because that was a little too formal. Besides, you wanted to try and keep the language as clear as possible to avoid any confusion.“Nice to meet you too.”Her voice had a very calm, feminine tone to it. And the fact that she spoke English was very nice. Though you could still hear the accent it sounded very natural, very understandable. Her eyes had a certain kindness there, though you were sure just from looking at her she wasn’t always sugar. There was a hint of spice about her.“When did the two of you meet?” Keiko asked with a polite smile. This had happened many times before, so many times that you didn’t even look to Shuuichi for any sort of confirmation. That was a rookie’s mistake. It got people questioning the validity of whatever was said next, no matter who said it. In fact, your expression hadn’t even changed though you knew whatever came next might very well be a lie.“A few days ago,” Shuuichi replied smoothly. This Keiko lady looked a little confused. You could see it in the slight tilt of her head. Just enough to tell that she’d moved, really. And there was a look in her eyes that made it seem as though she were trying to drag more information out of the redhead. Yep, she definitely had some spice in her cocktail.“He helped me move into my apartment. Apparently I looked like I needed the help. And I did. Japan is a very big transition for me,” you helped to fill in the story. With any luck such small details would help fill in for the whole truth. She could take them, play with them a bit, and as she did so they would expand to fill up any gaps. That’s what usually happened. Unless, of course, she was one of those girls whom admired Shuuichi in a romantic way. Then this could have been a very bad mistake going to see her so early on in the game. You shifted your view from Keiko to Shuuichi. It was a slide look to try and prod him into telling the rest of the story from his end. Though mostly you were trying to figure out what the connection was between him and Keiko. That way you could adjust your behavior and distance around her as best as possible in order depending on her potential feelings or past relationship with him. Still you got nothing. He was like one of those impossible to solve rubik's cubes that had you wanting to spend hours on it anyways.“She really did,” Shuuichi said with a smile, almost teasing in a way.Without thinking about it too much you stuck your tongue out at him. “And you really wanted to play knight in shining armor. You went out of your way and everything.”“I told you, it was not a problem. Your apartment is on my way to and from work.”He was an incredible liar. Though the two of you were using parts of the truth. More truth than lies really. But that was to be expected.“You’ve only known each other for a few days?” Keiko brought up once more.“Yes,” Shuuichi answered.Once again with the surprise and disbelief. Was Shuuichi meeting someone, even if it appeared to be a platonic someone at the moment, really that outrageous that she was confused? Obviously it must have been. You watched as Keiko nodded politely, putting a half step more between you as she tucked her hands in front of her. “What would you like to eat?”This time your gaze did differ over to Shuuichi. “I trust you.”Hopefully he didn’t order anything too outrageous. You’d hate to be dealing with stomach cramps from the food transition so soon. After all there were certain foods in certain countries that people had grown up with, thus their bodies were used to breaking down. Then when others tried it there were certain new bacteria or other such things that gave them issues. You’d hate to be stuck on your toilet all night for something as silly as not being used to something. You heard him switch back over to Japanese just as fluidly as he’d switched over to English the first time. And within what seemed like second he had ordered what sounded like two different things, though you couldn’t really be sure. Keiko smiled and bowed ever so slightly before she hurried back through the doors. Only to reemerge into the kitchen through another door, this time with an apron on.And that was how you realized not only was she the friend, but she was the actual cook for the place. You’d been assuming it was the man behind the counter. Who, you figured, was probably like her father. Or at least someone she knew very well. They had no issues moving past one another in the small, open kitchen. The food was served rather quickly. It was surprising, actually, how quickly. And from the smell of it very delicious. As Shuuichi split his chopsticks, Keiko and her father spoke out. Then you heard Shuuichi say something. Looking at your plate you mouthed the word to yourself. You must have put some breath into it because you practically felt Shuuichi smiling next to you.He turned to look almost at the same time you did. And this time he mouthed, in a bare whisper, “ee-tah-dah-key-mah-sue.”“Itadakimasu,” you repeated slowly. “What’s that mean?”“It’s just something we say to be polite.”Nodding in acceptance you repeated it once more in a whisper, committing it to memory. And then it was meal time. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
