Yu Yu Hakusho: Rise
Chapter 6
“You left her at Genkai’s with Yomi.”
The words were said in such a dead serious way that Koenma faltered. He stared out from his desk to the man standing a respectable distance away. There was something not quite right about the normally professional Kurama. There was an icy, vicious quality to the way he held himself so still. Koenma got the sensation that he was staring into the eyes of a man that could and would murder him if he made the slightest wrong move. Somehow Koenma couldn’t help but feel as though Kurama had loosened the reins on his inner demon just a bit too much. Even compared to the threats he’d faced from Yomi hadn’t seemed as insurmountable as the hostility seeping from Kurama’s pours at that moment. Which was ironic as Yomi was by far the stronger demon yet Kurama felt far deadlier.
“I didn’t have much of a choice,” Koenma said with a pout as he pushed himself farther back into his chair.
“You always have a choice,” Kurama spoke quietly. “It is just unfortunate that the choice you’ve made will prove to have deadly consequences.”
“I don’t think she’s in any danger,” the young prince tried to aswade the guilt and fear he felt over the situation by focusing on that fact. “He went to a lot of trouble to see her released.”
Kurama noticed right off the bat that Koenma said nothing about the harm you could do if you were motivated to. From the way he was reacting, he knew that Koenma had no idea the depth of the mistake he had just made. He debated internally over the pros and cons of enlightening Koenma to the massive blunder that his submission had caused.
“Whatever he has planned for her will not be to your benefit,” the avatar retorted smoothly.
“He said that she was going to help remind Demon World why it’s in everyone’s best interests to keep the worlds separate and stable,” Koenma argued as he leaned in towards the taller man, trying to keep the fear and uncertainty from his face.
“You fool,” Kurama said quietly, causing Koenma to flush in indignation.
“Look I know she’s powerful but I think you may be exaggerating the situation, Kurama. She’s still only human.”
“Do not underestimate the enemy you’ve turned her into Prince Koenma,” Kurama said sharply.
“I hardly think—“
“Pull up her file.”
If it wasn’t for the fact that Kurama had kept his tone calm and phrasing neutral, Koenma might have taken offense to the order. Koenma wanted to see what Kurama was getting at though so he followed through. Which meant that he had his ogres running around to get the tapes they'd recently pulled out of the Archives. Archives that they had needed to digitize for review when Yomi had come around with his ultimatums.
“Now, compare her last energy readouts with that of Sensui at his peak,” Kurama dictated Koenma. “Then with Yomi, Makuro, Raizen, and any other S class entities you have a record of.”
It took a bit to get everything on the large screen. When he did, Koenma’s mouth dropped. Kurama hadn’t even bothered to turn to look at the data. He had understood exactly what Koenma was seeing far better than Koenma even realized.
“You’re starting to understand. She had been strong before Spirit World kidnaps her and the only reason Spirit World had been able to capture her was because of her physical frailty. Now after 500 of constantly using her abilities, her spiritual powers are strong enough to challenge all S and A class demons in Demon World at the same time. And you saw no issue handing her to one of the few S class demons in existence that will gladly compensate for her physical vulnerability.”
Koenma could feel his body tremble as he looked at the data. To think not that long ago he had been worried about needing to re-establish the Kekkai barrier in a hurry if needs be. He had even been worried about letting you out into the living worlds given your past crimes. He hadn’t stopped to consider the effects that Spirit World’s crimes had on you. Hadn’t considered that the power they’d been relying on to keep the peace could be their undoing. After 500 years of forcing your body to purify and manipulate any and all energy they gave you to form the Kekkai barrier, every limit the body had for checking and using energy had been obliterated. He had never seen such readings. By comparison to your spiritual energy, all the S class demons had little blips while you were at the top of the charts. At the same time your attack power barely seemed like a threat, dwarfed by the demons on the screen.
“What have I—“ he swallowed thickly as he continued to stare at the one page that Kurama had directed him into compiling.
The idea of you working in consort with even one of the highest ranked demons...it was enough to make him feel faint.
“Kurama!" Koenma called out sharply as he tried to recover from his stupor. "Get Yusuke and Hiei. Get Kuwabara! Get anyone you think can help. Just go stop her."
"No."
Koenma looked scared. "N-no?"
"It would also be folly to send the other three. She would be able to draw on their Spirit energy and if they try to overwhelm her with strength Yomi will undoubtedly step in."
The words rolled off truthfully if not a little bitterly. As far as Kurama was concerned he should have been with you to make sure no one came at you. That had been something he’d done in the past more times than even you knew about. But times had changed. He was no longer Youko Kurama. He had been trying to be Shuuichi Minamino for so long that he was afraid if he stepped back into his old life even for a moment he might never come back. The freedom and the promise of many more years to come was a siren song he had a hard time resisting now that you were back to be a companion once more.
"Y-you'll stay here then? To make sure she doesn't kill me right?"
"I apologize Koenma, once again I must decline," Kurama said in a tight voice. "For the sake of our relationship I must abstain from any position in this struggle."
He didn't need to see Koenma to know his reaction. He heard all the cries of traitor as he walked back down the halls of Spirit world. Funny thing was that if Koenma already thought he was betraying him by abstaining then telling him how close he was to running off to join you would have landed him in the deepest pit that Spirit world had to offer. A particularly vicious part of his mind thought that it might have been worth it if he got to rip off all of Yomi's limbs first.
